Legal Matters Solicitor Nicola Dudley on things to consider when making your will

M

aking your Will can seem a daunting task but it need not be. There are some points to consider however and common errors can be avoided if you are aware of them. • Make sure that you use your full and correct name. Your passport may record your given name eg. John James Smith, but if you are commonly called “Jim” you may use this inadvertently. This could cause problems in the future when proving your Will after death. Similarly, you may have assets registered in the name of “Jim” and it would be advisable to refer to the fact that you are also known as “Jim” so that the assets can be identified as yours. • Beneficiaries names should also be recorded as shown in their passports as they may have to prove who they are. • When leaving a gift to a child consider providing for it to be paid to their parent or guardian so that the Executors do not have to retain the funds until the beneficiary reaches the age you have chosen. • Any personal items that you wish to leave should be easily identifiable. If you have two diamond rings, make sure it is clear which one you are referring to. Sometimes it is useful to take photographs and write the name of the person you are leaving the item to on the back. • Do not get anyone mentioned in your Will to be a witness when you sign. The Will may not be invalid but the gift to that person will fail. • Make sure you do not inadvertently duplicate gifts. If the same gift is in both husband and wife’s Wills before the main part of the estate passes to the

12

survivor then the gift will be made when the first one dies and then again when the survivor dies. This may not be your intention. • Consider whether you would want the children of any of your beneficiaries to inherit if their parent were to die before you. The gift will pass to the beneficiary’s children unless you state that you would not want this to happen. It is always safest to consult a professional when making your Will as they will automatically take the finer points into consideration and make sure that you wishes are recorded correctly. Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478 ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk

Lower Kingswood resident receives Surrey Neighbourhood Watch award

L

ocal Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Rod Ashford from Lower Kingswood has recently won The Award for the most significant contribution by a Neighbourhood Watch member in Surrey. Rod and his wife Sandra were invited to a special ceremony at Surrey Police Headquarters Mount Browne where Rod was presented with the award by Deputy Chief Constable Nick Ephgrave Rod was nominated by members of his local community in recognition of the time and effort he puts into Neighbourhood Watch and keeping them informed about local issues. For those vulnerable residents who do not have access to email and text messages, Rod has made it his responsibility to visit them personally to keep them up to date. Rod became involved in Neighbourhood Watch in 2009, he says, "Taking over wasn't an instant decision. I've never lived in a street with a Neighbourhood Watch before and was quite dubious about its value and whether it was really just an excuse for nosey neighbours and curtain twitchers." While he was still deciding whether to get involved, an event pretty much made up his mind for him. Rod explains "A young woman knocked at several houses in my street asking to borrow money. I recognised her as someone I

18

had seen steal a purse in Reigate a few months before. One elderly couple invited her in for tea and gave her ÂŁ10. However, a few days later, neighbours saw the woman trying to break into the couple's home. It seemed to me that if the couple had known about the potential consequences of their kindness, they could have made a more informed decision about inviting the woman into their home. I am now a firm believer in the value of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme." Chairman of the Surrey Neighbourhood Watch Association Rodney Amor said Rod is a clear example of the kind of individual, that this award is designed to honour.

Discover the secret of naturally beautiful skin with 100% organic SHEA BUTTER If you suffer from dry skin or cracked heels and nothing you’ve used helps then Shea Butter could do the trick.

S

hea butter is one of nature’s richest moisturisers. It has been traditionally used in Africa for centuries to keep skin soft and protected, and has long been coveted for its healing properties. It contains a rich amount of unremovable fatty acid which is crucial to rejuvenating and moisturizing the skin. Shea Butter provides all the essential vitamins needed to make skin look and feel smoother, softer and most importantly, healthier. Its therapeutic properties protect the skin from wind, cold, sun and it helps heal wounds faster. Shea Butter stimulates cellular activity, fights the effects of aging and repairs rough, damaged skin.

Get Fit For Life! Personal trainer Jade Parsons on how to stick to your fitness goals this year.

E

very year people start a fresh, which is great but not many can stick to it. Usually because the goal set is too big, or what they have chosen doesn’t fit their life style. Think about what you really want from your body? It’s not about looking a certain way, it’s about how you feel. Health is an all round package. If you not happy with something write down why and write down ways around it. Then, pick a way that fits best for your lifestyle. You are more likely to follow the changes you have added to your life if they have been written down and planned. You don’t need to start going over the top and set goals for exercises, sets, reps, rest, meals, and calorie intake. You should build your body according to your lifestyle. Weight loss takes time and this usually is everyone’s plan in the New Year. Making sure you have things in place to help you straight away. You could look at local gyms, look for running and walking groups near you, find out what fitness classes you like the sound of and enquire about them and try and rally up friends to join you in with helping you achieve your goals. I recommend using the 1st of January to set and write your new goals, as this can actually be a hard day to start.

34

Start small, workout the main thing that is affecting you and add to it over time. Think about setting dates for simple goals and also amounts of time you might want to be exercising for. So for example try to set one goal to add in two more sessions of exercise of 45 minutes a week and not to eat take always more than once a week. When you are able to achieve that you add another target. For example adding 4-5 portions of vegetables a day to your diet and doing exercise at the weekend as well as during the week. If your target is actually to add to your body in weight and muscle, maybe look at measuring the circumference of the body part you wish to change. Never just set one goal, as in life we have many and if you find yourself having difficulty with a certain target just put a date on it and start a new one, you can then return to the other goal. Why not get the whole family involved in your goals and targets. By doing exercises together or making a family health nights, where you get everyone involved in designing and cooking healthy dinner. Computer Tips Is Big Brother Watching you?

S

ome Service Providers or ISPs as they are more generally known can track your internet activity and whatever your efforts to secure anonymity, no method is totally secure. Most web browser settings will stop the browser from storing information on your own computer. Why do they want to know what we are looking at? Most obviously, media companies put pressure on ISPs to watch for users sharing copyrighted material. Media companies can also make a lot of money by analysing users’ online activity so that they can more specifically target advertising to you. You may have already noticed that your browser displays adverts similar to items you have looked at recently or even purchased. Some ISPs and website publishers may sell data detailing their users' browsing behaviour to ad agencies. Should you worry? Worry if you are sharing copyrighted material or using your Internet connection for other illegal activity. Very few companies attach the data they glean to specific accounts or names -- which means that even if your browsing habits are analysed, you remain mostly anonymous.

36

from Keystroke Associates

Security Measures: You can take a few simple steps to reduce the amount of ‘traceable’ data you generate. Some websites that typically handle more sensitive information, like email clients or social media, usually offer a secure connection. You can enable secure connections through settings on the site or by typing "https:\\" before the address of a site that supports the connection type. This protocol encrypts data sent through the connection, so while your ISP will be able to see what site you are visiting, it will not be able to see the information shared through the secure connection. For further advice on all things computing, please call Keystroke Associates on 01883 346516.
