“I’ve had a great response from my first advert in Connection. I have had around 6 calls

and 4 bookings so far and it’s only been a few days since the magazine has been delivered.” Lisa Hillyard, i-Lipo, Ewell Village

“I’ve had 12 new customers from my cover page advert that have all booked at least

one session. So the advert has paid for itself many times over, which is great!” Jodie Blunden, Pokey Feet Reflexology

“I have been in Connection magazine for over 2 years now and I have won jobs,

directly from that advert, which amount to £20,000 of profit, not turnover, profit! Steve Barnett, Carpet care plus, Walton on the Hill

“I’ve tried several different ways of advertising and leaflet distribution and without any

doubt Connection is the most effective way. It hits my exact target market – local people. Each advert increases my revenue by 15% per week – or an increase of about £500 – that’s a great return on investment on an £88 advert!” Grant Hardy, Hardys Fish & Chips, Burgh Heath

Personal trainer Jade Parsons explains how your own body weight is the best tool for exercising. It’s also free!

e need to pull are body about all day so why not use it when exercising. Developing a strong foundation of movement quality and technique is crucial. Body-weight workouts use lots of different patterns and exercise rolled into one. Body-weight exercises can help you with lots of things throughout the day. The movements don’t need to be complicated. Learning to lift or move your own body weight is very basic. Not many people are able to do things like push ups or pull ups and they can allow you to target multiple muscle groups at once. These could be basic things like getting up, or lifting and pulling your body. Different body-weight exercises help with preventing injuries; this is because they help developing stability and muscle coordination. But only if done correctly! Why not try squats or lunges; they are one of the simplest movements. It helps strengthen your gluteals, hamstrings and quadriceps, as well as improve balance and stability. You can make the squats shallow, deep, slow, fast, wide and narrow. Lunges should be done Standing with the hands on the hips and feet hip-width apart. Step forward and slowly lower your body until the knee is close to or touching the floor and bent at least 90 degrees. Then back to the start and repeat with the other leg. A plank is a good exercise to do, as it’s about strength and core. Try it by

16

lying face down with your arms and hands in front on the floor. Extend the legs behind the body and rise up on the toes. Keeping the back straight, tighten the core and hold the position for a good amount of time, hoping for 30 seconds or more really. Push ups are a great one to try, they are hard on the body if you are not used to them and you must think of posture while doing them as this can easily be forgotten. Performing pushups allows you to start at different levels that suit your ability. Still aim to try these, but maybe start by using a bar, box or wall while developing the strength needed for a full pushup. A push-up is not only about chest; it involves your shoulders, arms and core. One of the hardest body weight things to do is a pull up. This exercise means lifting your own body weight up. The pullup is a resistance exercise that works the upper body. A pull up can be changed for most abilities and can be assisted by a person, band or machine. You should aim to lift your body up until your chin is higher than the bar. Then lower your body slowly down to a hanging position. Then repeat or lower your legs to the floor. Remember you can also train anywhere and at anytime. We should all be trying to do more for are bodies and make them stronger, as they do so much for us.

Festive Food Matters

Advice on cutting food waste and saving money this Christmas

ne in five bags of food shopping gets thrown away – that’s not good for your pocket or the planet. As food prices continue to rise around the world, it’s a sobering thought to know that many families waste up to £50 a month throwing away uneaten food. This increases by a massive 80% during the Christmas period, equating to 230,000 tonnes of good food being thrown away worth around £275m. However we also know that cutting down on food waste can be a challenge, especially when you’re pushed for time and your kids don’t always want to eat what you’ve cooked for them. So to help you waste less, Love Food Surrey chef Carmela Tomkins gives us her top festive tips to help you plan the perfect waste free Christmas. Taking just one small step to reduce food waste can have a big positive effect on the environment and save you money too. We hope our tips will inspire you to take that step. It pays to plan • Control your urges to stock up and spend madly by planning for the season. Remember most shops will be open apart from the one special day. • Choose the food your family is most likely to eat. It is pointless offering brussel sprouts and red cabbage if it will not be eaten. It makes more sense to choose popular vegetables and cook them in a slightly different way such as pan-fried with garlic and bacon. • Seasonal special offers can be good value as long as you plan to use the extra food. Check if you can freeze items and make sure you have the space in your freezer before buying offers, or why not share deals with friends and family such as mince pies or sausage rolls. Perfect portions • Remember portion size - if you are serving a starter, main course and dessert, portions should be smaller than your everyday one course meal. • Choosing what size turkey to cook can be tricky. Stick with 450g per person and you

28

should have plenty to go round to please large appetites and leftovers for Boxing Day too. Love your leftovers • If you have any leftovers from Christmas dinner, chop up roast potatoes and vegetables, chuck into a pan to fry and add some Indian spice for a tasty bubble and squeak dish. • Make a stock from the carcass of the cooked turkey by simmering for a few hours in water with any leftover veggies such as onions, carrots or celery. Stain and season the liquid, which you can freeze, and use to flavour soups and risottos. • The large jars of coleslaw and chutneys may not get eaten entirely on Boxing Day but kept chilled will be great topping for a jacket potato for another day. Savvy storage • A well-stocked store cupboard can be a real life-saver over the busy festive period. Keep a variety of goods on the shelves and you'll always have the ingredients standing by to pull together a delicious meal for guests or to jazz up your Christmas leftovers. Festive freezing Make space this season. Food can be kept safely in the freezer for years at -18°C, as long as you keep it frozen the whole time. However the texture and taste may change over time, so try to eat food within three months. Try freezing: • Brandy or rum butter: Although these keep perfectly well in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, any further ahead than that they should be frozen in rigid containers. • Stuffings and sauces: All sauces (with the exception of hollandaise) can be frozen. • Casserole: Do you need to plan a casserole for supper on Christmas Eve when there will be precious little time for extra cooking? Cook when you have spare time and freeze until needed. For more advice on planning your shopping, portion control, recipe ideas and more, visit www.lovefoodsurrey.com.

Solicitor Nicola Dudley explains how to choose the right solicitor for you There are so many Solicitors to choose from that deciding whom to trust with your personal affairs is a daunting task. There are a number of factors to consider when you find yourself in need of a Solicitor, some of which are explored below. Recommendation The best way to find out whether a particular Solicitor is going to work well with you is to ask previous clients if they were happy with the service they received. Ask friends and family if they can recommend someone. Fees Find out how their charges are structured and if their fees are made clear before you proceed. Will they be able to give a fixed fee for the work that you require or will they charge you depending on the amount of time they spend? All Solicitors are required to give an estimate for their work but find out in what circumstances that estimate might increase. Make sure that you compare like with like to ensure an accurate comparison. Bear in mind that if someone is too cheap you may not receive the service you deserve. Location If you don't have much spare time then a Solicitor close to your home or work may be preferable, especially if you anticipate numerous meetings. You may want to be able to meet in the evenings or in your own home in which case a Solicitor who offers home visits may be preferable. Make Enquiries Have a look at their website if they have one. Do they cover the area of law that concerns you and do they have the necessary expertise? Find the name of a Solicitor to speak to before you choose. Call them and make an initial enquiry,

34

this will help you decide whether you will be able to work with them and if they have the knowledge to deal with your matter. Qualification A Solicitor who specializes in your particular area of interest may be preferable to a general practitioner. For example, a Solicitor who only writes Wills may not be able to recognize if you would benefit from tax advice and might not necessarily be able to take into account your financial and personal circumstances when preparing your Will. If you require additional documentation and advice they may not be qualified to advise you correctly. Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478 ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk

n our age of everything going digital certain requirements by government have also pushed forward in this way, one of those being auto enrolment. The reason this is IT related is because Keystroke Associates have put together a one hour tutorial using the pension regulator site to get people signed up and compliant but why might you ask? People are living longer yet too many people are under-saving or not saving at all for what could be a long retirement. The law on workplace pensions has changed to make it easier for millions more people to build up a pension, particularly those on lower incomes Automatic enrolment means that, rather than having to actively choose to join a pension scheme, staff are put into0 one by their employer as a matter of course. If they don’t want to be in the

AA Tree Care

from Keystroke Associates pension scheme, they must actively choose to opt out. It’s to encourage people to stay in pension saving. If you are a small company and you do not comply there can be a fixed penalty of £400 PAYABLE within a specific period, you can receive a statutory notice to fail to comply comprising of a daily rate of £50-£10,000 depending o0n the number of staff. The issue for small business is that they are generally too busy to get involved in red tape. If you would like help from Keystroke Associates to get your staging date and a plan for what you need to do then give us a call on: 01883 346 516 and speak to us. Don’t stick your head in the sand – you cannot afford to.
