APRIL

A

s we head towards warmer weather and the month of April, thoughts turn to fun with the inevitable pranks of April Fool’s Day (page 16), over-indulging in chocolate during Easter and then (some of us!) working it all off running the London Marathon. Find out some fun facts about the world famous race through our capital on page 6. And if the family is coming round on Easter Sunday then turn to page 18 for some traditionally-inspired Easter fun for all. And if you are looking for some artistic inspiration this Spring then there are two art exhibitions to visit. Turn to pages 29 and 30 for details on The Friends of the Children’s Trust and the Dorking Group of Artists shows. Katie

The London Marathon: Fun Facts 1. Do you know where the name ‘Marathon’ originates from? In 490BC, the Greeks beat the Persians on a battlefield in a place called Marathon. A Greek called Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens (24.8 miles) to tell everyone about the victory. Unfortunately, he was so exhausted after the long run that he collapsed and died! 2. The London Marathon is actually 26.2 miles long (26 miles, 385 yards). The reason for this is, in the 1908 London Olympics, the distance was extended so that the royal family could watch the start of the race from Windsor Castle and the end of the race from the royal box in the Olympic stadium. 3. The London Marathon was founded in 1981 by Chris Brasher. The first London Marathon took place on 29th March 1981 and has been running every year since then in the spring. 4. The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event in the world according to the Guinness World Record! Since the first marathon in 1981, participants have raised more than £500 million and donated it to different charities. 5. In 2002, a charity runner called Lloyd Scott wore an extremely heavy deep-sea diving suit weighing 110lb while running (or walking!) the London Marathon. It took him 5 days and 8 hours to complete the course! Since then, new regulations have been put in place stating that the race must be

6

completed within 24 hours. 6. In 2011, a football freestyler called John Farnworth completed the marathon while kicking a ball up between his right and left foot with every step. He finished the course in 12 hours 15 minutes and did not drop the ball once! 7. A Kenyan runner called Emmanuel Mutai currently holds the men’s London Marathon record. He completed the course in 2011 in 2:04:40 (2 hours 4 minutes 40 seconds). In 2003, a British runner called Paula Radcliffe set the women’s London Marathon record (and world record) with a time of 2:15:25 (2 hours 15 minutes 25 seconds). We are very proud of this!! 8. A group of runners called the ‘Ever Presents’ have completed the London Marathon every year since the first one in 1981! There are 15 Ever Present runners who will be taking part this year, the oldest being 79 years old, so remember to look out for them. 9. In the last 33 years, 888,552 runners have completed the London Marathon! 10. Every year, runners try to break official Guinness World Records and this year is no different! There will be over 100 people trying to break records on Sunday including ‘fastest man dressed as a toilet’, ‘fastest marathon carrying golf clubs’ and ‘fastest marathon in high heels’!

T

Nicola Dudley asks: should you be a Health and Welfare Attorney?

he last article looked at things to consider if you have been asked to be an Attorney under a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (“LPA”). This article considers the duties of a Health & Welfare Attorney. Being an Attorney, whether under a Property & Financial Affairs or Health & Welfare LPA, is an important responsibility but agreeing to make decisions concerning a person’s care when they are incapable of making their own decisions is not a task that should be taken lightly. Anyone over the age of 18 who has the ability to make their own decisions can be an Attorney. The person granting the LPA is called “the Donor”. Under a Health & Welfare LPA the Attorney may have to make very important decisions concerning the Donor’s health and care and this may include making life sustaining treatment decisions. A Health & Welfare LPA will only be able to be used once it has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian and, most importantly, only if the Donor is unable to make decisions for themselves. If an Attorney is unsure whether the Donor lacks capacity they should arrange for an assessment by a GP or other medical professional. This is as much to protect the Attorney as the Donor. Because an Attorney under a Health & Welfare LPA can only act if the Donor cannot make their own decisions it is important to consider:• Whether you have time to help the Donor. • If you know them well enough to be able to help. • That you would be able to cope with the demands of the role, making decisions for someone without mental capacity. • Whether you would be confident to make decisions in the best interests of the

12

Donor, even if other people want something else. • That you would be able to work with any other Attorneys. Some of the things you may need to make decisions about include:• Where the Donor lives. • Their day-to-day routine, including diet and dress. • Organizing community care assessments and services. • Personal care, such as washing and dressing. • Arranging appointments with doctors, dentists and opticians etc. • Agreeing to or refusing health care, including treatment that could prolong their life. It is advisable to discuss with the Donor matters on which you may have to make a decision for them, for example, where they want to live, their diet, religious, political or moral views, the hobbies and tastes in music, television, books or radio, how they like to dress or wear their hair, favourite pastimes etc. The Attorney should record this information and obtain details of any care plans, doctors and dentists details and if the times comes, make a record of all the important decisions they make on behalf of the Donor. Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0345 833 9025 or 07900 931478, ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk. April Fools Day Top 5 April Fools' Day pranks 1. Spaghetti harvest In 1957, the BBC broadcast a film on Panorama showing Swiss farmers pricking freshly grown spaghetti, calling it the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest. The broadcaster was flooded with requests about the plant 2. Fools' Day Parade Since 1986 press releases for the New York City April Fools' Day Parade - which doesn't exist - have been issued every year 3. Left-handed burger In 1998 Burger King reeled in customers with a fullpage advert in USA Today for its 'lefthanded Whopper' - with all the condiments rotated 180 degrees especially for left-handed diners. The fast-food chain later announced 'Everyone knows that it takes two hands to hold a Whopper!' 4. Flying penguins In 2008 the BBC caught viewers out by running a video clip of flying penguins, claiming the birds were flying to tropical rainforests in South American to escape the harsh Antarctic weather 5. Doggy high chair Ikea made a fool out of its furniture fans by producing and releasing a high chair for dogs in 2011 Where did April Fool's day originate? The origins of the day are uncertain. Most people think it stems from Pope Gregory XIII.In 1582, he wanted his new Gregorian calendar to replace the old Julian Calendar. This called for New Year’s Day to be celebrated on January 1 instead of the end of March. But some people apparently didn't get the memo and continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. These poor folk were made fun of and were sent on ‘fools errands’ for a laugh. However, others think April Fools' Day stems from the age when people used to hold spring festivals marking the end 16

of winter with 'mayhem and misrule', according to the Museum of Hoaxes. The Ancient Roman festival of Hilaria celebrated the resurrection of the god Attis and involved dressing in disguise. Many other cultures have held renewal festivals in Europe around April 1 and there are references to these dating back to the 1500s. What is clear though is that by the 1700s, the day of hilarity was well entrenched in Britain, and now April 1 is officially the most amusing day of the year. April Fools around the world April Fools' is celebrated in many countries all over the world, including Poland, Scotland and even Iran. The French call the day Poisson d’Avril, or ‘April Fish’. French children will often tape a picture of a fish on to the back of their friends and wait for them to realise. This is also the case in Italy. In Scotland, April Fools’ Day used to be called Huntigowk Day – gowk being Scots for a cuckoo or a foolish person. Traditionally people were sent on a foolish errand to deliver a sealed message reading ‘Dinna laugh, dinna smile. Hunt the gowk another mile’. In Iran pranks have been played on April 1 since 536 BC. The day is the 13th day of the Persian New Year, and is called Sizdah Bedar. Families and friends will mark the new season by spending the afternoon outside with food, games and jokes. India’s Holi festival is celebrated on March 31. On this day people play jokes, throw coloured dust and wear face and body paint to officially welcome spring. Meanwhile, in Portugal people throw flour over each other. Danes, Finns, Icelanders, Norwegians and Swedes also celebrate April Fools’ Day, heralding warmer weather after the long winter.

Get Fit For Life! Why bother working out at all?

T

here are so many reasons to workout but people still seem to make excuses of why not to. Yes its hard work, it takes time and it can be daunting and challenging. So why should you bother? For me it’s a no brainer but here is a list of things that might help you get up and do more! These are 10 Main reasons I think you should workout. 1. Working out can really help clear your mind of stress. Help with depression, mood, and anxiety. It can actually make life easier as all the negatives can decrease. 2. Working out gives you the ability to do the things we want most in life. You will not only more able in the activity or sport, exercise helps overall as things do become more and more difficult with age. 3. Your whole body benefits from any workout as it can release happy endorphins, which make you feel better and positive about yourself. 4. You only have one body so treat it right and it will treat you right! We all know this but not many really think about it. Life can be taken so quick so think about doing your best for you. 5. Working out helps with Mental Strength; exercise is more than just your physical muscles. It builds confidence and helps with the daily challenges you face. 6. It motivates others around you, we need to pass on health and exercise to our children. Everything you do has a direct impact

26

on the next generation. It’s not selfish to take time to exercise as it benefits everyone around you. 7. Sometimes exercise isn’t always about that actual exercise you are doing its about getting out doing something, being social, making new friends, joining a team and overall doing more that you used to. 8. Working out will help you feel younger and look younger as it has an Anti-Aging Effect on the body. It can make you look better overall not just younger and can improve your skin and hair, your shape and the tone of your body. 9. Workout because you can! Don’t be lazy; it gets you nowhere, exercise is a privilege. It’s not a punishment; it’s an opportunity to make you a better person. We are meant to move more than we do so do something about it. 10. The stronger you are the longer you should live. This is my favorite saying, everything I do is based on this. It’s never too late, and staying fit can help improve overall bone density. Exercise shouldn’t be painful, stressful and exhausting it should challenge you physically and mentally and it should always be building you up. Advertising in CONNECTION MAGAZINE could be the best decision you ever make for your business! Many local businesses think so.... “I’ve tried several different ways of advertising and leaflet distribution and without any doubt Connection is the most effective way. It hits my exact target market – local people. Each advert increases my revenue by 15% per week – or an increase of about £500 – that’s a great return on investment on an £88 advert!” Grant Hardy, Hardys Fish & Chips, Burgh Heath

“Since featuring in your magazine we have noticed an incredible rise in visits to our website – in fact they have doubled! As the web address only really features in our cat of the month ads we are confident that awareness has been raised through your incredible generosity by featuring us monthly – huge thanks!” Pamela Green Cats Protection, Epsom & Ewell

“Advertising with Connection Magazine has made a real boost to the number of enquiries we are now receiving – they are up by 35%! It has raised local awareness of our business and brought in local custom. If you are considering advertising with Connection I would strongly suggest you do. It has made a huge difference to us.” Karl and Nicole, Bodyworks Practice, Banstead

C O N N E C T I O N

“I have recently purchased a database package that allows me to enter customer details and compile a report of where the work comes from, website, referrals etc. I have been in your magazine for over 2 years now and I have won jobs, directly from that advert, which amount to £20,000 of profit, not turnover, profit! Steve Barnett, Carpet care plus, Walton on the Hill

“Connection Magazine has been a great find for me. I find the response has been far better than the previous ads via yell.com and the Local Guardian free sheet and all the leads are local cutting costs. Keep up the good work.” Doug Muldoon, High Trees Carpentry, Burgh Heath

M A G A Z I N E

“I started advertising in Connection Magazine in April 2011 and the response has been tremendous! The phone calls have risen month on month and I now get on average 5 calls a week. This has made a big difference to my business. I could safely say that 20% of my work comes from the adverts with Connection.“ Kevin Butterfield, Motor Vehicle Services, Lower Kingswood
