APRIL

S

pring has well and truly sprung and with it comes the shedding of winter hibernation in favour of getting out and about in the longer days. Easter is early this year and if you’re having a family get together then why not try some traditional Easter games as well as the usual egg hunt? Find out more on page 18. The Children’s Trust is hosting it’s annual Easter Fair at Tadworth Court on Easter Sunday. If you’ve got little ones why not go along and meet Peppa Pig! But if a more grown-up event appeals why not visit the Spring Exhibition of Arts also at Tadworth Court from 17-19th April? P33 has all the information. And with the usual array of local community news and events, I hope you enjoy this month’s read. Copy deadline for May 2015 issue is 17th April 2015.

Legal Matters

I

Solicitor Nicola Dudley with some tips on inheritance tax savings.

nheritance Tax (IHT) is currently charged at a rate of 40% on the amount by which your estate exceeds £325,000 and up to that sum at 0% (the “nil rate band”). No IHT is due on any gifts to your spouse/civil partner, charity or a political party. Married couples or civil partners can claim any unused proportion of their spouse’s nil rate band against their combined estates on the death of the survivor, which means that potentially the first £650,000 could be free of IHT. If you think that your estate may be liable to IHT on your death then it is advisable to check that you have taken advantage of a few useful IHT planning tips. • Make sure you have used your annual allowance of £3,000 by making gifts up to that amount in each financial year. • In addition to your annual allowance you can make gifts of up to £250 per recipient but you cannot make these gifts to anyone who has received all or any part of your annual allowance. • If you make any gifts in excess of your annual allowance the amount of the gift will still be counted as part of your estate for IHT purposes unless you survive the gift by seven years. • You can, however, give gifts on the occasion of a wedding. Parents can each give £5,000, grandparents and other relatives can each give £2,500 and anyone else can give £1,000 and you may even get a thank you! • Any maintenance payments to your spouse or civil partner, your ex-spouse or former civil partner, relatives who are dependent on you because of old age or infirmity or your children (including adopted or step-children) who are under 18 or in full time education will be exempt for IHT. • If you have a death in service benefit, a pension “pot” or life cover make sure

12

that these lump sums are written into trust for your family. Merely nominating beneficiaries may not be completely IHT efficient. • Consider whether you have any excess income that you could give away rather than investing it and adding to your potential IHT liability. If you find that your income exceeds your usual spending then it is possible to give away the excess without having to survive seven years. The gift is immediately effective for IHT purposes. Whilst the above may be useful IHT planning should always be tailored to your particular circumstances and it is easy to overlook the finer points. “The devil is in the detail”, as they say. Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478 ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk

Fun Easter Games Easter Egg Hunt Let's get the basics out of the way first. Hide the eggs. Either let the smaller children have a head start or have separate hunts for the older and younger kids. Alternately, pair each little child with an adult. Otherwise, the school-age kids will wipe the area clean of eggs before a toddler can even get going. Egg Roll Each child is given a hard-boiled Easter egg. The object is to get it from the starting line to the finish line. There are several ways to roll the egg. It can be pushed with a spoon, feet or noses(!) without cracking the shell. Steal the Egg This game requires two teams and a referee. Team members are numbered, opposing teams lined up opposite each other, and a plastic Easter egg is placed in the middle. The referee calls out a number, and the two players with that number approach the middle of the field. The object is to pick up the egg and get back to your line without being tagged by the other player. If a player succeeds in doing so, his or her team gets a point. If the player is tagged, the other team gets a point. Ten points wins the game. A player can be tagged only after picking up the egg, so strategy is important. Is it best to go for the egg, or wait for the other person to pick it up? Egg and Spoon Relay Race This is a great game for the grown-ups to participate along with the kids. The players are divided into two teams. Each team is divided into two groups, one at Point A, one at Point B. The first player is given an egg in a spoon to carry from Point A to Point B. At that point the egg and spoon are handed 18

off to the next competitor, who carries it back to Point A to the next competitor. A dropped egg means that the person carrying the egg must go back to where he or she started from. Use hard-boiled eggs unless you are willing to sacrifice a couple dozen eggs. If using raw eggs, the person who drops the egg has to go back to the starting point and get another egg. The first team to complete the relay wins. Egg Toss This game is played with raw eggs, so if the kids have on their good clothes, you may want to put plastic trash bags over them to protect them. You could play with boiled eggs, but the breaking of the eggs provides most of the fun. Each competitor has a partner. It's good to pair a young kid with an older person. The partners stand about five feet apart, and a raw egg is tossed from one partner to the next. Those who catch the eggs without breaking them continue in the game; the others are out. After each successful catch, the players must take one step backward so that the tosses are longer and longer. The last team left with an unbroken egg wins the game. This game is great fun for family reunions, too. Egg Bowling This game is played similarly to lawn bowls. It can be played indoors or out. Each player uses a colored boiled egg. A plain white boiled egg is used as the target. Players compete to see who can roll their egg closest to the white egg without touching it. The first person to win a certain number of rounds--usually five or ten--wins the game. Alternately, use a chocolate Easter bunny as the target. The winner of the game gets the chocolate bunny.

“I’ve tried several different ways of advertising and leaflet distribution and without any doubt Connection is the most effective way. It hits my exact target market – local people. Each advert increases my revenue by 15% per week – or an increase of about £500 – that’s a great return on investment on an £88 advert!” Grant Hardy, Hardys Fish & Chips, Burgh Heath

“I have recently purchased a database package that allows me to enter customer details and compile a report of where the work comes from, website, etc. I have been in your Advertising referrals magazine for over 2 years now and I in have won jobs, directly from that Connection advert, which amount to £20,000 of profit, not turnover, profit!

Magazine could be the best decision you ever make for your business! Many local businesses think so....

“Advertising with Connection Magazine has made a real boost to the number of enquiries we are now receiving – they are up by 35%! It has raised local awareness of our business and brought in local custom. If you are considering advertising with Connection I would strongly suggest you do. It has made a huge difference to us.”

Karl and Nicole, Bodyworks Practice, Banstead

Steve Barnett, Carpet care plus, Walton on the Hill

“I started advertising in Connection Magazine in April 2011 and the response has been tremendous! The phone calls have risen month on month and I now get on average 5 calls a week. This has made a big difference to my business. I could safely say that 20% of my work comes from the adverts with Connection.“ Kevin Butterfield, Motor Vehicle Services,

Get Fit For Life! Personal trainer Jade Parsons on functional fitness and how it can help you with everyday living

F

unctional fitness exercises train your muscles to help you do everyday activities safely and efficiently. Some people exercise to look a certain way and some people do it to benefit their life. Doing functional things while exercising is the best way to build your body up for future tasks. With everyday tasks our body takes a beating, so why not build yourself up to be better. Functional fitness exercises are designed to train and develop your muscles to make it easier and safer to perform everyday activities. Functional fitness exercises or programmes are there to train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks. They do this by simulating common movements that you do at home, at work or in sports. You will be using various muscles in your upper and lower body at the same time and also working on your core stability. Functional fitness exercises can be done at home or at the gym. They tend use lots of joints and muscles at once. Training like this can reduce your risk of injury and improve your life. You will be able to do every day tasks easier as you improve balance, muscle strength, posture and coordination.

30

I suggest making sure you include different types of body weight exercises like squats and lunges. But also do step ups and basic weight bearing exercises to help with all functional things. Always include exercises that strengthen your legs, gluteus maximus, lower back, arms and shoulders like lifting and walking. The exercises do not need to include balance aids to be functional; you should always try to use your body rather than an aid like a Bosu or Swiss ball when doing functional things. This is because you wouldn’t really be using them in a daily task. Try things that are like holding a child and moving and placing the child back to the floor. You imitate this in the gym with squats, walking lunges or deadlifts while holding a weight. Think about things that will lengthen and strengthen lots of muscles in your body at once as this is more like the things you will do day to day. Please try and think about the way you are doing these exercises. You must watch your form and make sure someone is able to correct your posture if needed as any exercises not done correctly can lead to problems. Call 07564 525351 for personal training and nutrition guidance or email jadeptraining@hotmail.com Working at Twist Gym Kingswood.

Computer Tips Cloud Storage for the home: One of the big early selling points of cloud computing has been the availability of cheap, plentiful storage space for photos, videos, work documents and anything else you can think of. Cloud storage providers include UK-based Memstore, along with U.S companies such as Dropbox, Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft. It’s important to check out the various options and not just sign up to the most familiar brand names, as costs can vary depending on the storage needed. It’s also well worth considering a UK-based provider like Memset, as they’ll be fully-

from Keystroke Associates compliant with UK specific laws and regulations, which isn’t the case for businesses based elsewhere. For peace of mind, backing up once to an external hard drive and once to a cloud service means that you have security whatever happens. And it’s low cost – Memstore is a great example as you only pay for the space you use and when you download beyond large amounts. For instance, you can store up to 100GB and download 20GB per month for just £3.95 per month. Streaming is the topic next month. For further advice on all things computing, please call Keystroke Associates on 01883 346516.
