ISSUE NO. 1

Fall 2012

Welcome From ASuop President Alรกn Hensley For many of us it is that time of the year where we must return to our second home that is University of the Pacific. For some, the end of August has been marked on the calendar for many months now as the beginning of an amazing college journey. While we may have to say goodbye to those long summer days as we return to the Pacific campus, those bittersweet goodbyes are subsided with the greetings of exhilarating days ahead. To the new students joining our Pacific community, I want to extend a warm welcome to our community and to my returning classmates, I would like to say welcome back and prepare yourselves for an exciting year. In this year of 2012, the world is the most technologically advanced to date. It seems as if every person has an iPhone or Droid and you can follow anyone on Twitter. It is argued that we are the most connected generation of students ever through the use of social media and the internet. Now, more than ever, we have the tools and ability as students to make a positive difference on our campus, in our community, and even the world. While it may be easy to sit in front of a computer screen watching an endless queue of Netflix movies,

we must remember that this technology has given us the opportunity to do so much more. We can get our statistics class surveys done in a matter of hours via Facebook, surveys that previously took us days to complete. Many of us considered a career as a professional photographer after first discovering Instagram. We can ask Siri about any research topic that catches our interest (or that our professors assign us). We can even raise awareness about local issues to the rest of the nation and the world. As we embark on this 2012-2013 school year, I not only welcome back my returning classmates and welcome those new students joining the Pacific family, but I also challenge us to make this an unforgettable year worth tweeting about. Best regards, Alรกn Hensley ASuop President

Getting Involved @ Pacific

Campus Involvement is the Key to Success Getting involved at Pacific is essential for your college experience. Research indicates that by getting involved within the Pacific community, either through one of our 150 clubs and organizations, Greek Life, Interfaith Council or through an academic department, students increase their likelihood of graduating by 40 percent. Being involved on campus provides easy access to many campus-wide resources and lets you connect with others who are seeking cocurricular experiences. These opportunities outside of the classroom round out your college experience by providing you with valuable and life-changing connections. Getting involved is easy and exciting. Check out our organizations on OrgSync at asuop.pacific.edu. Or would you rather meet these people in person? Then come out to the DUC lawn on Sept. 6 for the Student Activities Fair - it’s a great chance to see the different groups that Pacific has to offer. You can also stop at our office and work with one of the wonderful Student Activities Center staff; they are your personal concierge to getting involved on campus and can help you find a group that fits you best, or can coach you through the process of starting your own.

Becoming involved in Greek Life at Pacific is a great way to take on leadership responsibilities and form long-lasting and sustaining relationships with your fraternity brothers or sorority sisters. Pacific is home to 13 social Greek organizations. All of these organizations place a high focus on academics, community service and relationship building. During the first week of the fall semester, the Greek community hosts a “Greek Welcome Week.” This event provides new students with the opportunity to meet all of the social Greek organizations and learn more about them. Along with daily tabling outside of the DeRosa University Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the community will be hosting the following programs: • Saturday, Aug. 25: Block Party hosted in partnership with ASUOP • Monday, Aug. 27: Meet the Greeks BBQ • Tuesday, Aug. 28: Movie on the DeRosa UC Lawn • Wednesday, Aug. 29: Speaker: Mari Ann Callais – “From Ritual to Reality” • Thursday, Aug. 30: Greek Life 101: Info Session We hope you’ll join us!

For others, it may have been two or three years since your MOVE experience. But now is the time to take the next step in becoming an active Pacific volunteer. • Register as a Pacific volunteer. After registration, it takes 24 hours until your account is set up and you can first log-in. • Keep track of your service hours. Start by logging your time doing service during MOVE. When you track your hours, we say “thank you” by offering Reach Out Rewards.

Still unsure of where to get started? Contact the Center for Community Involvement and a Reach Out student will help you find the service opportunity that is right for you!

This is a great way to get started! • Ongoing opportunities are organized by theme. From animal care to youth mentoring there is something for everyone. • Special Events are a perfect way to get out into Stockton and check-out the community while making a difference at the same time.

Career Corner

Finding Employment While @ Pacific Looking for a part-time job to help with expenses? Want to gain experience in your chosen field? Consider finding an on-campus job, a part-time job in the local community, or an internship during the fall or spring semesters. These opportunities are a great way to develop professional skills and earn an income while in school. The Career Resource Center (CRC) provides both in-person and online services and support to help students navigate the process of finding jobs and internships. While there are a number of ways to identify these types of positions, as a student you have access to Pacific’s own Tiger Jobs.

Types of Tiger Jobs Opportunities: 1. On-Campus Employment

Tiger Jobs is the Career Resource Center’s online job board that offers postings for fulltime, part-time, and internship opportunities. These positions are located both on and off the Pacific campus. Students can access Tiger Jobs through insidePacific, and new students will have access to Tiger Jobs beginning on August 24th. For troubleshooting and instructions please visit TigerJobs FAQ.

These positions offer the opportunity to give back to the campus community, become involved, and learn professional skills. Federal Work-Study positions are also available for students who qualify through Financial Aid.

2. Part-Time Off-Campus Jobs These positions are a great way to connect with the local community and gain experience outside of the Pacific‘s campus. Most businesses are within a 5-mile radius of campus.

3. Internships Connect what you are learning in your courses with an internship outside of the classroom. Some employers offer monetary compensation for internships, while others offer academic credit. Also, learn more about the new “Internship Certificate Program.”

Career Resource Center Services To Take Advantage of... • Career handouts and resources • Our “Video Gallery of Careers” featuring Pacific alumni • Interviewing skills videos • Workshops

• On-line Career Assessments • The new “Internship Certificate Program” • Evening hours on Tuesdays from 5pm - 7:30pm

Career Corner

Your Future is Calling... Though the tough economy has been a factor in recent low employment figures, there is good news for Pacific’s recent graduates! In a recent survey of Pacific students who graduated in 2011, 92 percent indicated current employment or enrollment in graduate school. Additionally, 87 percent of alumni who are employed full-time indicated that they enjoy their work. The alumni surveyed encompassed a variety of entry level positions that range from researchers, legislative aids, and teachers, to designers, analysts, and retail managers. Employers alumni reported working for: Accenture; Bank of America; Merrill Lynch Europe; California State Assembly; Elk Grove Unified School District; Foster Farms; General Electric; Mexico’s Consulate; NASA; Nvidia Corporation; PG&E; Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics; Starbucks; Target; Teach for America; WholeSoy & Co; among other companies. Through the survey, several trends emerged regarding employed alumni’s use of the Career Resource Center that current students can benefit from: career services and events, job search timeline, and the value of internships.

Job Search Timeline The majority of employed alumni surveyed started the job search process early in their senior year. Regardless of class standing, the CRC career counseling staff can create a timeline and steps necessary to be successful in the career search. Early applications as well as weekly goal setting can help with managing stress and finding your career fit.

Utilizing Career Services No matter the student class standing, the Career Resource Center provides a variety of services for students to make their career search successful. The graph below illustrates the various career services and Career Resource Center (CRC) events employed alumni reported using.

Value of Internships Whether or not a student’s major has an internship requirement, the benefits of completing an internship have a direct correlation to employment and job satisfaction. The graph below indicates the satisfaction of alumni with comparison to Alumni who completed an internship compared with those who did not.

Campus Safety Tips

Public Safety Works to Keep YOU Safe The Department of Public Safety serves University of the Pacific Stockton campus in a variety of functions from providing police services and special events management to educational programs in crime prevention and a student advocate program. The department is the only university function that operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The safety of the campus is the primary goal of Public Safety and the department uses the philosophy of campus-oriented policing. The main principle of this concept is that every member of the campus must be aware of their surroundings and notify the department when they observe something suspicious. The department is also the home of S.T.R.I.P.E. (Student Trained Resources for Interior Patrol & Escort), which is a student run cadet program. Members of the team are responsible for transporting students around campus at night and providing an added layer of security on the campus. Public Safety is also involved in the planning and management of more than 200 special events on campus each year. Crime prevention seminars are another tool the department uses to educate students. The purpose is to make our community aware of potential risks and how they can avoid becoming a victim of a crime.
