COVERLETTER 2

I am currently a fourth year student pursuing my Bachelors of Architecture in the College of Architecture and Environmental design at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I am studying abroad in Florence, Italy [2012-13] and am pursuing my interest in historical architecture and attempting to analyze its implications for contemporary life. While Architecture has always held a fascination for me, I am also working on completing an Art minor during my stay at Cal Poly. While I am only a fourth year architecture student I have achieved success in my studio courses thus far and am confident in my work abilities. I have experience a large variety of computer programs, and I am proficient in working with the Adobe suite (including PhotoShop, Illustrator, and Indesign) and Trimble Sketch Up, Rhino, Form Z, and AutoCad. I am knowledgeable in sustainable design and utilize such programs as Climate Consultant and Solar Shoe Box. I have also utilized these all in various environments ranging from different firms, school and my own personal projects. I have some experience working in Revit for past jobs and have rendered with programs such as Podium, Shaderlight, V-Ray and am skilled in Photoshop editing. I have been credited with being resourceful, hardworking and adaptive as a result of my communication skills. I am confident in my abilities to handle even the most challenging situation and consider myself a critical thinker who learns quickly.

SKETCHING 6

For me, sketching has always been a form of expression. I rarely go outside without a sketchbook and a handful of pens. These are sketches I completed at various times in the past few years, some while travelling abroad and others at my leisure. The medias are mixed, ranging from pen and ink, graphite, charcoal and watercolor.

CLIMATE DATA

Climate analysis provided the basis for many of my design decisions. I apporached the project with a goal of designing a capsule tower which was specifially tailored to its site. I used climate analysis and solar Shoe box to explore design solution and applied these to my final design.

INNER HEAT GAIN REDUCES HEATING NEEDS.

BUILDINGS SHOULD BE ORIENTED EAST TO WEST WITH SOUTHERN EXPOSED GLAZING.

At 200 square feet total, these arpartments are truly capsules. They show a snapshot of life, a comfortable arrangement which houses only the necessities of life. Meant for a single person, each capsule apartment features a full kitchen, a bathroom and a living area. Two spaces are often utilized as one, the bedroom transforms into a open dining room with a sliding panel which covers the bed. The kitchen counter functions as a desk and work area. The walls are preforated with windows and light is prominent. The two floor plans were specifically designed to provide the most southern light possible to each apartment.

CAPSULE TOWER

PROJECT STATEMENT derived from climate analysis, my project is meant to respond to its climate and to provide thermal comfort at a smaller scale. located in rome, italy the capsule tower incorporates rotation in its floor plan layout to maximize direct heat gain during the winter months. this same rotation provides the secondary aspect of sun shadiing for the summer months.

NAUTILUS type: location: classification: year:

Sustainable Marine Lab. St. Croix, Virgin Islands conceptual 2012

Nautilus was my first competition entry while at Cal Poly. It’s a sustainable marine laboratory set in St. Croix. It’s orientation responds to sunlight, views and wind. The 60,000 sq. ft. plan is elevated on one side to have less of an impact on vegetation and creates a public and private sphere separated by a central courtyard. The shape and adaptive skin were inspired by a disintegrating ship.

This project was an exploration in adaptation and model building. The assignment was to first create a “path through a book by cutting out sections of the book. The second part was to create sculptural pieces which expressed the cuts inside when the book was shut. Lastly I created a slip case to showcase the finished book and lock it in place.

PARASITIC COLLECTION type: location: classification: year:

Expansion of Program Cal Poly SLO Conceptual 2012

Parasitic collection was a opportunity to once more design sustainable housing. However, this time we looked at Cal Poly SLO’s campus. Our challenge was to create visitor suites which would plug into exisitng architecture on campus. All of the modules are organized on a North to South axis, with a glazing opening up to the South to allow for solar gains in winter and shading for the summer sun. The predominant north-west wind can enter the units from operable windows within the skin. The Aluminum perforated skin provides both a visual screen to hide the units utilities and to provide a solar shield for the building itself. On the balcony this same skin acts like a screen to shield from heavy winds.

research project Florence, Italy Analytical 2012

This project, titled Adopt a Monuent was a case study of a work of architecture in Florence, Itlay. The goal was to study and analyze the work in its historical enviornment. Museo Marino Marini is a rare example of Adaptive reuse in the City Center of Florence and has become one of my favorite museums in the city. The following boards illustrate my findings and analysis.

CONTOUR type: location: classification: year:

Strategic design Florence, Italy Conceptual 2012

Contour is an attempt to bridge the physical gap between the Galleria degli Uffizi Exit and Piazza Castellani. My Intervention is meant to address both the confusion created by the current [lack of] exit and the dissatisfaction felt after being funneled out. I addressed the issue by creating a series of flat platforms which can serve several functions, they provide meeting areas for guests, miniature courtyards for socialization and viewing platforms onto Piazza Castellani giving visitors an opportunity to reorient themselves. My goal was to fragment the existing ramp, to create an urban topography which would serve both the public and the museum as a connection and a new type of urban “Piazza.

PERMEABLE type: location: classification: year:

Museum Design Florence, Italy Conceptual 2013

Located south-east of the center of Florence, the Bellariva site is beautiful, open and has the possibility to become a connection between the river and the urban setting of Florence. Our challenge was to create a museum of Urban design for Italy, something which could serve as a link between the river and the residential context. The form in plan was inspired by flow, a wave through the landscape. The form is simple, an arch intersecting the more solid appearing mass of the exhibition space. Percolate is a project which is meant to allow flow through the site, both visually with its use of transparent materials and physically with almost imperceptible connections through its spaces. The design is meant to encourage curiosity and wandering, a viable attribute for a museum.
