LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE

Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM

1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street).

 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize).
 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home.
 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.

 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys.
 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.

 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.

 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office.

 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision.

 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts). GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.

Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

SALUTE TO OUR HEROES GALA

On February 13, 2016, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) held its 8th Annual Salute to Our Heroes Gala at the Omni Hotel Houston Westside raising over $100,000 to benefit graduating seniors from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. Cypress Woods High School AFJROTC was chosen to Present the Colors and the Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony. Tina Clinkenbeard, CFISD Teacher, sang the National Anthem. State Representative Allen Fletcher gave the invocation and Senior Ryan Lancaster, from Cy-Fair High School, played TAPS. Kevin “Dauber” Lacz, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic was our guest speaker for the evening. Lacz spoke from the heart about his experiences as a Navy SEAL and the impact his service in the military had on his life. As a Certified Physician Assistant, Lacz uses his past experiences to facilitate his work in medicine and charity and actively seeks to support service members and veterans in his community. Lacz inspired us all with his motivational story, winning attitude and continued commitment to service. Joe Myers Ford Lincoln generously underwrote this year’s Salute to Our Heroes Gala and we are grateful that they have agreed to underwrite this event in 2017. Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and North Cypress Medical Center were Major General Sponsors this year. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more than half a million dollars over the past eight years, funding several endowed scholarships for students graduating from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in the area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to 1,300 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law. GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

Walk-ins Welcome Amber Salon Coordinator

Our Girl Scout Cookie sale for 2016 concluded on March 20th. Hope you stocked up, as there will be a long wait before cookie time rolls around again! Many thanks to all our cookie volunteers and to all the troops who participated. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors. ! Money earned from the annual Cookie sale funds individual troop activities and supports Council programs and camps. Some of our troops really made their cookie booths special. Members of troop 113035 had a cookie booth on Valentine’s Day and report that they sold 200 boxes in 2 hours. These Girl Scouts really enjoy dressing up. They represented Vietnam at our World Thinking Day event and took part in our cafeteria-size Friendship Circle. The World Thinking Day event drew almost 200 girls (and their leaders). Each troop represented a different country and presented national costumes, music, food and crafts at their booths. They also had some great swaps! Stick on mustaches, crepes and chocolate lollipops that were shaped like the Eiffel tower were featured at the “France” booth. Maracas made from plastic spoons and Easter eggs accompanied Fiesta costumes at the Mexico booth the special collars and headdresses seen at the Egypt booth looked as if they had come from the King Tut exhibit. Beautiful costumes, bright colors and lots of smiling faces made traveling “around the world” as easy as moving around the cafeteria! Our event started off with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Girl Scout Promise and finished up with a Friendship Circle and singing “Make New Friends.” We also collected donations for the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. Our STRIDERS event brought an afternoon of track and field events, with families coming out to cheer on their daughters. Girls jumped rope, ran in individual and relay races, threw softballs and jumped in standing and running events. We also had a few snacks to keep up our strength for all those activities. Our spring Leader/Daughter event in Wimberley featured “Art in Bloom” crafts and activities, as well as the Talent Show, Dutch oven Cook-off and all our usual fun activities. Horseback riding and rock climbing, kayaking, shopping and eating the results of the Dutch Oven Cook-Off are all part of this exciting weekend.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Sale

Everyone's got an idea of how to sell a house – but when it comes to impressing potential buyers, staging your home may be the most important thing you can do. If you're thinking about selling your home this year, read eight tips on preparing your home for sale. Cut the clutter. Your personal items will distract buyers, so put them out of sight. Extra furniture makes your house seem crowded so store anything you can temporarily live without. Keep in mind that buyers will be looking in your closets, so consider renting a storage unit if you have lots of knickknacks or furniture that needs put away. Clean, clean, clean. Your bathrooms and kitchen should sparkle like new, even if they're not. Shine your sink and pay attention to glass shower doors and counter tops. Repaint the walls. A neutral paint color helps potential buyers imagine themselves living in your house. Give your bathroom the hotel treatment. Make sure your personal grooming items are out of sight, then give your bathroom a warm and inviting feel by putting out a stack of fluffy towels and a new bar of soap. Freshen up your fireplace. Clean off any visible soot. Replace or repaint your fireplace screen if it needs it, and paint or polish the bricks. Update your kitchen cabinets. Re-stain them instead of replacing if the color is outdated. Add some new hardware to your cabinets and your kitchen will look fabulous for less. Consider replacing your kitchen appliances. Studies show that new appliances make a big impact on buyers, so you may want to replace them while you’re giving your kitchen a makeover. Stage your home for the sale. Just like in the bathroom, make the rest of your home seem inviting yet neutral. Add a few vases of fresh flowers in the living room and bathroom. Invest in luxurious bedding for all the bedrooms and accent pillows in the living room.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

With help from various stars, planets, a cantankerous robot and the wise and patient Flight Commander, Mr. Houston, they learn that the God who created the stars and the heavens is the same God who loved the world so much that He sent His son to die for them, wants to have a relationship with them and with Him nothing is impossible.

The women’s group will begin a study His Name is Jesus, Life and Power in the Master’s Ministry by Pastor and Author Jack Hayford. His Name Is Jesus focuses on the life of Jesus as seen in Matthew, Mark and Luke. It shows how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy and how to understand key parables and other teachings of Jesus. Learning the importance of applying His words to our lives, we’ll explore Christ’s earthly ministry as seen in His titles and discover more fully what it means to follow Him as Savior and Lord. Please join us on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM, at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX, 77095, 281-463-6600.

Fire Ants have also been on the rise again due to the frequent rains we had earlier this year. Please be on the lookout and take care to not get attacked when sitting down and performing seeding/planting work. If you have any uneven areas in your lawn that require filling in, a 50-50 mixture of sand and topsoil raked into the lower areas will help fill such areas and still provide to growth to emerge. The sand will help offset the abundance of clay that we are all forced to work with here in Harris County. Sod replacement work can be started and is recommended now and through May, before the warmer days are upon us. Other major project work such as tree replacements or irrigation work should be completed before the end of May as warmer days will make such work more difficult if you are a do-ityourselfer.

Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.

DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!

START THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!

Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to large dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from. We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster families. Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster families socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible. Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted, please know that your efforts helped to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever home.
