The Uplands School Hymn I vow to Thee, my Saviour, All things from earth, above; Entire and whole and perfect, The service of my love.

Uit die blou van onse hemel, Uit die diepte van ons see, Oor ons ewige gebergtes, Waar die kranse antwoord gee,

It’s a love that never falters A love that pays the price It’s a love that offers humbly The final sacrifice.

Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land.

When today I hear your calling To serve, to help, to heal, I’ll go forth, I’ll answer promptly Your power to reveal.

Uplands School Prayer Teach us good Lord To serve You as we should To give and not to count the cost To stand up for what is right To work for you at all times And not to expect any reward Other than to know that We are doing what you want us to do. Amen

It’s a love that asks no questions It’s a love that stands the test That lays upon the altar, The dearest and the best.

To the lost, the broken-hearted, To the children, I will go In your wondrous name, Lord Jesus, To see your Kingdom grow. I vow to Thee, my Saviour, All things from earth, above; Entire and whole and perfect, The service of my love.

Uplands magazine editorial 2014 We are so proud to publish this year’s magazine. In the spirit of an established school with new ideas, we headed in a new direction. Our look is fresh, modern, trendy and #Classy. It is also the first Uplands magazine to be published by a magazine committee. The publication is a wonderful testimonial to unity and teamwork - our theme for 2014. We have gone the extra mile to ensure that our photo material is of a good quality and the result is absolutely worth it. We strove to capture the essence and ambience of Uplands in these pages. Our greatest asset, our children, made this possible. Their happiness and joy shimmer throughout the magazine. Hopefully the moments captured in 2014 will be like the crumbs of a delicious bake, filled with happiness and fond memories that will lure hearts and minds back to Uplands in the years to come. A tremendous thank you to every member of the editorial committee for your constant dedication and hard work. Jenny Simons did fantastic work with photo material and support from the office and Sue Kloeck’s eagle eye was sharp as ever with the tremendous and daunting task of proof reading. Elrie Visser at KMHub did wonderful work. We greatly appreciate your help. It was an exciting and rewarding journey to create this publication. May the the Uplands magazine of 2014 be a joy and a pleasure to all who read it! nEsther n  Engelbrecht

Headmaster’s Address

n#HeadmastersAddress n  #SupportiveParents #Teachers #SchoolBoard #SchoolManagement

T

he year was 2014 and we have reached the end of another chapter in the exciting life of Uplands Prep. I would like to pay tribute to your guest of honour this morning, Mrs Jacki Van Zyl who has not only led the PTA for the past three years and but has also been a loyal member for the past 10 years. Jacki has served tirelessly and selflessly over the years and it is most fitting that we can thank her at an occasion like this. There is no successful school that does not have a supportive parent base and we are fortunate that we do have a wonderfully loyal parent body at this school. One of the best predictors of successful children is the teacher that guides the learning process. While we are an established school with the most beautiful surrounds, it is the people within the organisation that make it a success. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all that the staff have done for Uplands this year. This includes the academic staff, administration staff, learning support, music, catering, housekeeping, cleaning and the ground staff. We now have one Board that provides governance, leadership and oversight to both the Prep and the College. We thank Mr Nic Adams, the out-going Chair of the Board, for his work and dedication to Uplands. I look forward to working with the new Chair of the Board, Mr Howard Rogerson next year. The Board members give freely of their time and expertise to the school and we are well served - thank you. I would also like to thank the Prep Exco, chaired by Mrs Pat Brink, as they meet regularly to provide advice and support to the school management.

6

Mr Austin Clarke, the Executive Head, has provided key leadership in developing strategies for the implementation of the combined Uplands services namely: Boarding, Marketing, Finance, Grounds and IT. I am pleased to report that all of these areas are working well. The school management team has been an integral part of the success of 2014 with rigorous debates as we planned and seek to provide best practice for the school - thank you! The PTA has once again been on hand to help serve and cater at various functions including the Christmas Market and numerous sports festivals. Thank you to all the parents that have helped out in one way or another. We enjoyed a fabulous Leavers’ Dinner last week and I must mention Kerri Coetzee and her team of Grade 6 parents who did an awesome job of ensuring a memorable send-off for our Grade 7s. I thank the leavers of 2014 for the shade cover on the runway field which will be of great comfort on the hot Lowveld days. Thank you to Madds Warrener for assisting with that project. The pace about the school has been high this year and I can confidently say that we have highly productive children. Our Grade 6 group achieved a result of 5.7 % above the IEB aggregate in the Core Skills Tests. The Grade 5R class was selected to be part of the international TIMS-numeracy study of 300 other South African schools. Uplands has seen out a successful 2014. We are looking forward to another chapter in our history! nMr n  Dave Ernstzen Uplands Preparatory School

Chairman of the Board’s Address n#ChairmanOfTheBoard n  #JointBoard #Unification

I

want to talk about two themes today. Firstly, “Unification” Some 3 years ago we started the unification process – partly triggered by what I think of as the “the unhappy era” under the brief stint of the previous Prep headmaster. And partly because it simply makes sense that the two schools are managed collectively, to maintain individual characters, but jointly benefit from all the best that is Uplands. With respect to the Prep, the Board’s primary objective was to restore happiness and stability. I am very pleased to say that through the positive attitudes and great energy of Mr Dave Ernstzen and Mr Alex Hall that has been admirably achieved. Happiness is a core value and fundamental to our constructive learning environment. There are already many positive impacts from thinking as one school: • We are starting additional Grade 6 & 7 classes – This strengthens the Prep and its sustainability, and feeds more people with Uplands DNA into the College. • We are re-opening Boarding – this rediscovers the early Prep ethos and allows many of the loyal distant Uplands families to continue the tradition of sending children at a younger age. • Other changes include the alignment of academic curricula, shared use of coaching and sports resources, increased common admin, finance and marketing. • In the areas of marketing and branding the “Brand New” project involved intensive consultation on how Uplands is seen and how it should be seen. Many useful changes will come from this.

Uplands 2014

On the branding front – after much research and deliberation by a group of skilled people, the Board has decided to adopt one school badge for the combined school.

My second theme is “Send your kids to the C ollege” It is too late for some, and I wish you the best for your time at a new school. But I am unashamedly punting that Prep kids continue to the College. I believe it is in most cases best for your children, best for your family life, and undoubtedly best for Uplands. The College has achieved incredible things in its brief existence, across the Sporting, Cultural, Service and Academic arenas and offers a comparable, and sometimes superior, product with other great schools out there What I can promise, is that while the College is already a great school, more importantly it is not hampered by the “it’s always been done this way” syndrome, and has visionary and restless leadership – the rate of improvement will always outstrip comparable schools. And we undoubtedly have a world-class headmaster. But don’t just listen to me. Interact with kids from Uplands College and other schools; talk to the really good teachers who have chosen to join us from other really good schools. I congratulate all the award winners today, and all of you who may not be on stage but have given of your best. And I wish there could be a prize-giving for teachers – their dedication and effort deserves continual accolades. Thank you for your time, have happy and safe holidays, and I wish you all the best for 2015. nMr n  Nic Adams

Executive Headmaster’s Address n#ExecutiveHeadmaster n  #ParadoxicalYear #Progressive #WorldClassIT

A

n African saying reads: “It takes two people to produce a child, but an entire village to raise one” and I will refer to this idiom as I talk about our village school. This past year has been paradoxical, where two opposing realities have both simultaneously been true. On the one hand there was disaster. This time last year, both Tino Chitando and Robert Clarke were alive. In the aftermath of The Journey, the current Grade 11s were fragmented and many were very angry. The entire Uplands community was in shock at the tragedies. It would, however, not be a paradox if the other side of the story were not equally true. Uplands as a whole is in a better space now, than it has been since I can remember. The Prep is a happy, progressive place under the energetic and endearing leadership of Dave Ernstzen, with the assistance of his techno-savvy deputy, Alex Hall, and the rest of the team. At the College our academic program has been revitalised and energised by Viktor Kurz and his merry band of HODs, with the cooperation of the teachers in their respective departments. There can be no question that on the IT front “world class” relates to the use of technology to enhance the process of learning and teaching. Great strides are being made in this area. I am pleased to report that the biggest hurdle, namely wireless connectivity, is being surmounted.

8

Financial position is directly linked to enrolment. Our pupil numbers from grades 000 to12 are the strongest they have ever been, with growing waiting lists in most grades. This is a great tribute to our energetic Marketing Department. In response to demand, the Board accepted Mr Ernstzen’s proposal to open a third Grade 6 class and to reopen Selby Taylor Boarding for approximately 10 boys. With regards to the infrastructure, grounds and gardens, credit must go to the Operations Manager, the Estate Manager and their hard-working team for further improving one of our most appealing attributes. We expect the infrastructure to continue to develop next year and are very grateful to UPPA for leading a fundraising drive to build two squash courts. UPPA continue to play a cohesive and positive role at Uplands, for which we are very grateful. Although the year has been a great success, we must never be complacent, as many challenges remain. We need to engender a sense of restless energy that ensures that we continually lookout for ways to improve and develop. I would once again like to thank the entire Uplands village for the support I have enjoyed over the past year as Executive Head of your fine schools. nMr n  Austin Clarke

hree highly valued staff will leave Uplands at the end of the year. Mrs Kathy Vincent, one of our Grade 3 teachers, retires after 17 years of service in the Foundation Phase. Kathy has contributed in so many ways over the years and her sense of calm and her gentle humour was always appreciated by both the teachers and the children. She won’t be a stranger as she has remained in White River and we will still see her at school from time to time. Mrs Mandy de Villiers and her family relocate to Queenstown. Mandy has looked after our Wooden School children for the past four years and her care and creativity shows in the lives of those children she worked with as they have progressed through the school. We wish Mandy, Jakob, Luke and Emily well for the next chapter in their lives. Mrs Nita Lombard emigrates to Canada to start a new life closer to her children. She has done valuable work in the Music Department and with our choirs. Nita will be sorely missed, but we know a happy future beckons. nMr n  Dave Ernstzen

Chaplain’s Report n#ChristianLife n  #Baptism #AdmissionToCommunion #ChristianCamp #Ekukhanyeni #ChaplainAdvisoryCommittee

I

t has been a good year as far as our Christian life at Prep is concerned. 2014 has naturally not been without its h iccups, but overall it has been a wonderful year. For the first time in at least 10 years, as far as I can determine in our records, we have needed to have two Baptism services. This was due to the number of children who wished to be baptised and admitted to communion after our first service. Our first Baptism and Admission to Communion service was held on February 28 and the second on September 12. There were a total of 21 people baptised this year, including a staff member, a parent and our headmaster’s youngest son, James. Some 34 children were admitted to communion. This year saw the resurrection of our Christian camps. We held our camp at Ekukhanyeni and there were some 50 children who attended. The theme of the camp was “Popeye the Prayer Man” and it was without a doubt a successful and enjoyable camp. My thanks go to all the staff who assisted me in planning and running this camp. Also a great thanks to the

12

staff at Ekukhanyeni who really made us feel welcome, fed us like kings and went out of their way to ensure that we had a wonderful time. This year also saw the founding of the Chaplain’s Advisory Committee, which is a body that I have put together to advise me and assist me in developing the spiritual aspect of our school life. It comprises two members of staff from the Prep, two members of staff from College, the Moms in Touch Chairperson, a Board Member, the Chairperson of our College Christian Committee and myself. Both our Headmasters have an open invitation to attend any of our meetings. We have met once a term during the year and I have really felt that this committee has helped to improve our spiritual life and have really supported me in my ministry on campus. One of the ideas to come out of that body was our Thandaza Walk or Prayer Walk. I believe that it was a very successful event. We hope to hold it annually and cover our campus in prayer constantly. All the feedback that I have got from those

Uplands Preparatory School

who participated, confirms this. The normal aspects of our Christian life, such as our Senior Primary Eucharist Services every Friday, our Junior Primary Chapel sessions every Monday and my Divinity lessons to Grade 4 to 7 have continued as normal. I have had a wonderful group of Sacristans this year, assisting me in our Chapel Services and it is my wish and prayers for them, that as they leave Prep and move on to the various colleges that they will be going to, that they maintain

their relationship with Christ and that He walks with them day by day. To the Grade 7 body as a whole, may God be with you in your future endeavours and may you achieve all that you wish for yourselves. Do not forget that God is there for you, that you do not need to be afraid to turn to Him at any stage in your life and ask Him to guide and nurture you as you walk your life’s path here on earth. nFather n  Andrew Simons

Learning Support Unit n#LearningSupportUnit n  #FarewellAnnaréAgenbag #MindMoves

T

he Learning Support Unit has been a hive of activity this year. The goal of this service is to provide support for our pupils, their parents and the teachers. The therapists and teachers, too, have spent time developing their own skills in order to help the children more effectively. In June we were sad to say farewell to Annaré Agenbag, one of our occupational therapists, who decided it was time to take over a practice in Stellenbosch and also be closer to home, too. Her shoes have been most ably filled by Maritza Kok, who comes with a wealth of experience in working with children in Pretoria. During the year, two valuable workshops were arranged for the senior classes. The Grade 4s were shown how to organise themselves and their daily routines more effectively, by Megan Edmonds, an occupational therapist at Flamboyant School. The Grade 6s’ workshop covered different study techniques, which they put into practice during their final exams. We were once again, treated to a talk by Dr Anthony de Pontes on ways to cope with the stresses and strains of daily life.

Both the staff and parents were introduced to the concept of Mind Moves, which are movement which can help children overcome various barriers to learning. They were given a series of lectures by the Mind Moves instructor, Elmarie Swanepoel. This resulted in the teachers applying these moves to great effect in their classrooms. Our Gr 00 teacher, Mrs Lisa Bezuidenhout, was so inspired by the course, that she is now qualifying herself as a Mind Moves instructor. In order to keep up to date with modern trends, the therapists have attended numerous conferences and workshops. The topics covered included dyslexia, the legal aspects of running therapeutic practices, phonemic awareness, accommodations and strategies for children with dyslexia and ADHD and also the importance of reading to your child. I am very grateful to everyone who has contributed their time and knowledge in our efforts to help each individual thrive at school. nMrs n  Pat McCreedy

A

committee is only as good as the teamwork and commitment of the members of that team! I was very fortunate to have an amazing team of hardworking and very dedicated members who gave up a huge amount of their personal time to help us achieve another successful year of fundraising. I can’t thank my 2014 PTA Committee enough for their dedication and time. We’ve worked well as a team and besides the hard work, we also had a lot of fun too! A big thanks goes to the “Preppa” parents, who support us so well.

PTA activities

2014 was another busy and successful year. These are the activities we undertook: • Various phase socials, the Inter-house athletics and a Swimathon in the first term. • The Uplands Festival in the second term. The Prep PTA handles the kids’ activities for the Festival. We call it “The Field of Fun”. Each class or grade is also responsible for a grade stall for the Saturday. It was a huge success. Tuckshop days creates a fair income at sports’ fixtures. • We held our campout this year in the third term. The first team cricketers co-hosted this campout with us as a fundraiser for their tour. We had a very successful Fun Glow Run! • The fourth term saw us organise the first ever Craft Beer Festival and we combined this with our second Christmas Market. The Hope Foundation ran a superb tea garden in the dining room. We had a smaller version of the Field of Fun to keep the kids busy. Unfortunately the Beer Festival ran at a loss. It’ll have to be “back to the drawing board” to discuss whether it’s worthwhile trying this venture again. We also ran our successful bi-annual photo project

with Cathy Prettejohn at the end of the year. The PTA ends the year by doing the social after the Nativity play and then does the bar at the Leavers’ Dinner.

PTA Projects

During 2013 both the Senior Boys and Girls bathrooms were revamped and this is definitely a huge improvement and cost - almost R200 000. This was a big project and we needed to take a bit of a loan from the school so we started off 2014 in a negative and the first part of 2014’s funds raised, was used to pay back this loan. The rest of the money raised was spent on/will be spent on: • Giant Chess Board (Thanks to Mark Southern for donating the paving) • 2 good quality microscopes for the Science Lab • New blinds for the dining room • Assisting the Art Department with framing Maeve Sidey is our treasurer and my thanks to her for her dedication, support and encouragement over the last 4 years of being Chairperson. My sincere appreciation to the Class moms, the teachers for their assistance throughout the year, Jenny Jordaan, the kitchen and cleaning staff, George and his ground staff who also assist us so much, the front office staff and of course, Dave and Alex, who were always “there for me” and the PTA. Last but not least, I must thank Tracey Russell who was always just a phone call away to help with anything and everything! 2015 is a new year with a new Chairperson and I wish Caro Brayshaw success in taking on this big role. Remember to be grateful that you are able to send your children to this amazing school which was part of my life for 10 years. I’m really going to miss it! nn Jacki van Zyl

The PTA managed to transform a sport field into an impressive entertainment arena filled with all kinds of games, rides, food stalls and plenty of fun for children of all ages. With the help of the class moms, each class or grade hosted a stall with activities like magnetic fishing, face painting, popcorn and our impressive tea garden where you were waited on by very competent Grade Sixes and Sevens. Many interesting and exciting rides were also imported from afar to add to the excitement. nMrs n  Cheryl Calmeyer

Growing Real Relationships

O

ur boys and girls continue to enjoy their time with their Gro-UPS mentors and clearly welcome the relief from academic time in the classroom! The aims of our time together are:

• • • • • • • • •

To create smaller families or groups within the larger Uplands Prep Community To engender caring and open relationships within our own groups, where it is safe to speak one’s mind To create a space where all pupils may find voice and not be afraid to challenge in a caring and respectful environment To cultivate and nurture the Uplands values To create a space where difficult or sensitive issues can be addressed in a non-threatening smaller environment To encourage a feeling of belonging and a sense of ownership, not only when you meet, but also on a daily basis in all areas of school life To listen more than you may speak at times To create leadership opportunities To encourage anything else which will add value to the Gro-UPS and all its members - it really is an informal arena to develop Emotional Intelligence

Grade 7 Leadership We strongly believe that every pupil at the school has the potential to lead, whether it is being a mother or father one day, or the next Bill Gates or South African president! Leadership certainly has changed from the autocratic style of command and control to which many an adult today was subjected. John Quincy Adams the sixth President of the United States said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” We would like to encourage all our boys and girls to know that their greatest attribute and tool to create positive change is “voice”. This continues to be a focus for the staff and the process

is on-going and always under review. For the first time this year we held our leadership camp here on campus. Our staff ran a variety of activities that not only tested the boys and girls, but also presented an opportunity to unify them as a grade and gave them an opportunity to lead in varied situations. Special thanks to both Mr Müller and Mrs Carlse for the many hours spent preparing, as well as the time given to the children during the camp. nMr n  Alex Hall

White River SPCA Child Welfare Rotary Club of White River Uplands Outreach Casual Day stickers Reach for a Dream

Prior to winter, we collect blankets for the needy and it is always with great pleasure that these are handed over before the cold arrives. Our Grade 3s and Mrs Kath Vincent have formed a partnership with Two Sisters Orphanage where our boys and girls actively engage with the orphans and on occasion provide the basic requirements for the orphanage. Mrs Vincent also takes volunteer children to visit and to assist

in any way possible. Towards the end of the year we will, as always, embark on a Christmas Cheer drive. Uplands pupils bring wrapped gifts which the Rotary Club of White River distributes to those less fortunate. Many classes and Gro-UPS groups have also committed to provide Santa Shoe boxes this year which are distributed via the Santa Shoebox organisation. All the proceeds from our My School Card collection are donated to Uplands Outreach, which offers invaluable support to a wide range of communities in need. It is our greatest hope here at Uplands to encourage kindness at all times, as it is really one of the greatest ways to display love! “The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.” - Mahatma Gandhi nMr n  Alex Hall Uplands Preparatory School

IT Implementation at Uplands n#ITImplementation n  #iPadStrategy #AppleTV #GafeSchools

W

e certainly have been on a Tech drive at the Prep to start incorporating IT into the classrooms. Every class in the school and various other venues have been equipped with a desktop computer and data projector for some time now. We also have rolled out 16 iPads to the majority of our Senior Primary Staff to further enhance learning, not only for them, but in preparation for our latest phase of our iPad strategy. Our first phase to bring in a trolley of 26 iPads to be utilised throughout the Senior Phase took place in July this year with great success. Every Senior Primary classroom has an Apple TV, which enables the projection of any iOS device on the Data Projectors in the classrooms. We have also installed 8 Mimio interactive whiteboards in our Foundation Phase for our younger pupils. The appointment of an IT specialist over and above our IT teacher took place at the start of the year, as the demand on the network and amount of devices has risen. Our second trolley of iPads will be rolled out in 2015. This year Uplands Schools - both College and Prep - have become Gafe (Google Apps for Education) schools, which means every child now owns a piece of the google cloud and has access to the full Google suite of Apps. This will give our pupils unlimited cloud storage. It means they have use of collaborative Apps such as Docs, Forms, Sheets and Presentations which can be used across any platform or device. The teachers have attended several training sessions this year. All this will raise considerable interest about the role Uplands 2014

that technology plays in the modern classroom. It is important to us that our pupils make the transition from being merely consumers of knowledge and information, to becoming producers of new knowledge and information. In other words, education is not only about the basic levels of understanding and remembering information. We need to set our sights on helping pupils to access, analyse and evaluate information. They may then begin to draw their own inferences about what this information may mean in the world in which they live, and how it is relevant to them and their environment. They can then begin to explore how they might apply that information or knowledge in a new and useful way. So what do we use technology for in the classroom? The four main uses are as follows: for drill and practice, access to information, to enhance the learning environment and creativity and production. One should remember that this technology does not replace the human element in our classrooms. Well qualified, motivated and enthusiastic staff will remain the most valuable resource that a school can possess. These technologies which are available to us are merely a tool with which we can enhance the teaching and learning in our schools. Any good teacher’s primary function will remain to motivate and mentor their pupils, to present knowledge in a way that best engages their pupils and to ask questions which make their pupils think. nMr n  Alex Hall

Cultural Overview

T

his year we started off with a bang by auditioning every single senior phase pupil for the choir. This resulted in an impressive choir consisting of eighty members. Our music department was kept busy with over 50% of Uplands Prep’s pupils learning at least one instrument privately. Our children’s art work was displayed in many different places around the school as well as at the Uplands Festival. The Eisteddfod was, once again, well supported by Uplands in which we had pupils taking part in every discipline. Part of our philosophy is to ensure that pupils are comfortable on the stage and this was facilitated by classes presenting assemblies and different grades put on a play every term. By the end of the year, every single child from Grade 000 to Grade 7 had been on the stage. In order to enable more practice time for the choir, we started our exciting Cultural Period in the third term. Children had the choice of a wide range of activities to experience for the term. Activities like handyman work, mosaicing, batik, birding, camp craft, board games, scrapbooking, card games etc. This was well received by pupils and teachers. We took part in an Inter-school Chess League for the first time in a long time. Uplands, once again, managed to win the Rotary Inter-school Public Speaking Competition. Looking back on the year, we had a busy and fruitful year culturally. At Uplands Prep we provide wonderful opportunities for the boys and girls to experience this side of their holistic development. nMrs n  Cheryl Calmeyer

It’s Cool to be an Eco-school! Uplands was once again granted its international platinum green flag! The whole school was involved in enviro-related projects and themes on the environmental calendar were celebrated. The highlights for 2014 were the Uplands Earthchild C elebration and tree quizzes, trails and tree planting for Arbor Month. Added to this we were treated to special assemblies presented by Mrs Greenbody who came to share meaningful messages about our Mother Earth. We had two groups of GreenUPS this year, meeting once a week. Uplands signed up for the ENO-Treelymics and came 40th in the world for tree planting. Worthwhile projects included: • Energy police stickers to remind everyone to conserve energy and not leave lights on in classrooms unattended • ‘Water is precious’ signs in all bathrooms • Organisation of Uplands Earthchild Celebration • Sorting and ongoing collection of bread tags and plastic tops • Our first wheelchair from bread tag collection was achieved • Maintenance and observation of Calendar Garden • Senior GreenUPS presented a theme programme at the Eisteddfod to spread the message of caring for our world • Middle GreenUPS made a huge sign for Maqamela School out of tops • Planting of seeds in bottles and seedlings in school garden • Spring flower display showing indigenous and exotic flowers on our campus • Ongoing activities about the plight of the rhinos • Planting of indigenous trees on the school campus nMrs n  Sue Kloeck Uplands 2014

ur Pre-primary classes put on a Nativity Play in the fourth term. Congratulations to all our budding actors and actresses. They all performed like real stars and really captured the hearts of our audience. The Grade 0s were the narrators and each child had a line to say. Our Grade 00 girls were the beautiful angels and the boys were our superb shepherds. The Wooden school girls were shining stars, while the boys were spectacular spotty sheep. It really was an entertaining and fun-filled evening filled with the joy of the festive season. Well done to everyone involved!

T

he Foundation Phase’s concert this year was Bon Voyage – Around the World. We wanted to give each class the opportunity to shine and to demonstrate its own unique talents. Every class represented a country. The result was a variety of fun and delightful items. Grade 1W took us to Spain where we were entertained by pretty Spanish dancers and handsome boys doing the Paso Doble. This was followed by an excellent performance of the popular song and dance, Macarena. We were then taken to the lovely island of Hawaii by Grade 1R. The Beach Boys were brilliant with their surf boards and the girls did an impressive Hula dance. Their poem was full of fun and well-dramatised. Grade 2S took us to busy London where they did a super performance to a golden oldie, Singing in the Rain, with their brightly coloured umbrellas. The highlight was their brilliant Wham dance. The energy and spunk in this were most enjoyable. Grade 2O met us in colourful Brazil for the Rio Carnival. We all got into the party mood with their fabulous Rio dance which involved ribbons and beautiful masks. Soccer fever ran high for the World Cup and the soccer song and their Brazil dance were amazing. Grade 3V took us to the mystical land of China. We were entertained by a spectacular dragon dance to traditional Chinese music. They showed off their impressive fighting skills with their Kung Fu Fighting dance. It was outstanding, showcasing their bold and disciplined moves. We then experienced the rhythm of Africa with Grade 3K. The Zulu dancers were powerful and the girls were fantastic with their fast footwork in the gumboot dance. The president delivered a dynamic and moving speech. Some Grade 3s acted as pilots and flight attendants. Their performances were excellent and added a lot of humour to the play. Well done boys and girls, you all shone brightly like the stars you truly are. Thank you to all the teachers and parents for all their hard work and creativity. The play would not have been a success without you.

Shrunk

T

he Grade 4 and 5 classes staged a delightful play, Shrunk during a very busy third term. As a result, they cleverly combined their Roald Dahl choral verses from the Eisteddfod, under the expert direction of Mrs Renata Stewart, who also wrote the humorous and imaginative script. The wacky “science” teachers and enthusiastic children entertained the audience with drama, humour and prose. Our talented Mr Wayne Liesching, composed and wrote some original music and lyrics for the score of the play. The choral verses were from the Dirty Beasts poems of Roald Dahl, therefore the various “beasts” formed the cornerstones of the play. The audience was taken on an imaginative journey through various parts of our school. The Grade 5 children were searching for the missing ingredient for an experiment, which the teachers were brewing in order to mind control children. While their hunt gained momentum, we were entertained by army ants, magical frogs, hungry Frenchmen and grumbling stomachs. We even shared some moments with a chocolate-guzzling, greedy child who had a close encounter with a porcupine. Although the missing ingredient to the experiment was never found, a few crazy teachers were left to think that they ruled the world. However, the children did seem to have the upper hand in the end!

The Rainbow Cloak

nThis n  page is sponsored by the #WarrenerFamily#Grade6And7Play #TheRainbowCloak

T

his play is loosely based on the Bible story of Joseph. Joe tells his friends in Johannesburg that he is going to visit his Gogo in Kanyamazane to find out more about his roots. Gogo relates the story of his ancestors where Joseph’s b rothers sold him to Voortrekkers. He eventually ends up working in the home of millionaire, Potiphar. After some unwanted a ttention from Mrs Potiphar, Joseph is thrown into jail. The Zulu king, Nkosi, then needs someone to interpret his dreams and Joseph is released. He works his way up the rungs and becomes the CEO of a gold mine where his brothers end up working. After playing a prank on his brothers, Joseph reveals who he is and there is much celebration. Accompanied by African songs like Tula Tula and African Dream, the Grade Seven children performed superbly with a wide range of cow and “mielie” dances, some gumboot dancing, beautiful solos and accompaniment on the saxophone. The Grade 6s were the singing chorus, dressed as a rainbow. This was a colourful mix of a traditional story intertwined with our own rich, cultural history. nMrs n  Cheryl Calmeyer

T

he buzz of the third term at Uplands revolves largely around the Eisteddfod. We have once again had a very fruitful period which has discovered great talent. The large class groups, performing their poems this year, have especially done us proud. Even the GreenUPS Enviro club members presented a theme program, entitled “You, too, can be a friend of the Earth”. Eight different categories were attempted this year by our children, the most popular by far being that of ‘Dramatised Poetry.’ Lynn Mutanda, entered by Key Drama Studio, was our youngest participant ever as she is only in Grade 00. The individual participants managed to achieve 16 As, 22 A+s and 16 Prestige certificates. Our class groups received 4 A+ and 5 Prestige awards for choral verse. Our kids did very well in the Art Eisteddfod in 2014. Cayleigh Nemes and Lucy van der Meulen both got a gold award and Jessie Cowling achieved a Prestige in the design category. Their work was also displayed at the Eisteddfod Gala evening at the Nelspruit Civic Centre.

The results for large class groups:

Grade 0H and Grade 0P – A+ Grade 1R and Grade 1W – A+ Grade 2O and Grade 2S – A+ Grade 3S – A++ Grade 4S and Grade 4N – A+ Grade 5R and Grade 5E – A++ Grade 6 girls – A++ Grade 6 boys – A++

he Choir had a busy year this year. Mrs Nita Lombard started off by auditioning every child in the Senior Phase and we ended up with a Senior Choir of eighty children. Our Junior Choir was just as impressive with forty members. The Senior Choir had their annual sleepover in the beginning of term two. Besides learning songs in their various voice parts, they also had lots of fun and games. In this term we also had our PrepCol Combined Choir Evening, hosted by the College. The size of our choir as well as their performance thoroughly impressed the audience. In term three both choirs entered the Eisteddfod and impressed the judges to no end. Uplands reintroduced the Combined Schools Choir Evening. At this event we hosted two hundred children made up of our two choirs as well as the junior and senior choirs from Penryn and Curro. The Senior Choir entered a My School YouTube competition with their well-polished “Cup Song”. Both choirs also performed at various school functions throughout the year. The children entertained the residents of Rustig Old Age Home. Sadly we had to bid farewell to Mrs Nita Lombard who emigrated to Canada at the end of the year. Her service to our school in the Music Department as well as to the choirs was dedicated and untiring. I am so pleased that she could say goodbye knowing that she had brought both our choirs to such a high point in 2014. nMrs n  Cheryl Calmeyer

n the third term we had our annual Senior Phase Inter-house Public Speaking Competition. Two children per house, per grade were selected by their English teachers to participate. The best overall speech was by Kira Karantonis and Adriaan E ngelbrecht was the runner up. Although they are both in Fuller, Webb managed to win overall through the individual c ontributions of each Webb speaker. In the fourth term we held our first ever Junior Phase Inter-house Public Speaking competition. One child per house, per class was selected to represent his or her house. The audience were delighted and impressed with the standard of their speeches. There were no individual scores announced, but Webb managed to win again by the narrowest of margins. Kira Karantonis and Adriaan Engelbrecht were selected to represent Uplands Prep at the Rotary Inter-school Public Speaking Competition. Adriaan was third overall and between Adriaan and Kira, they managed to bring the trophy home again. nMrs n  Cheryl Calmeyer

lthough the Lights and Sound department functions very much in the background and, sometimes, can be a thankless job, it forms an integral part of the running of Uplands Prep. The dedicated team of six boys are selected and trained at the end of their Grade 6 year and their duties include setting up sound for assemblies, hymn practices and C hapel as well as the more challenging events such as sports events, school plays and talent shows. The boys learn to master the technical and artistic side of operating our expensive sound system and stage lights. However, one of the main a spects that is worked on throughout the year are the basic life skills of working together as a team, interpersonal relationships and dealing with unexpected technical breakdowns. The boys go on a teambuilding camp in the beginning of the year and build on this experience throughout the year. 2014 was a good year for all involved. nMr n  Wayne Liesching

plands kids have had a prolific year in the Art Room. This vibrant space in the school has grown into a haven and paradise for many children. All pupils from Grade 3 to 7 visit the Art Room once a week and get the chance to be boundlessly creative. They express themselves beautifully and colour and joy abounds. Not only do we create freely, but we also study great artists and their works. Some lovely art works are created and slowly, but surely the children’s art is framed and used to decorate the school. The Grade 7 group of 2014 painted two giant picture puzzles to grace the dining hall. At Uplands every child can be an artist. nMrs n  Esther Engelbrecht

e held our annual Inter-house and Inter-school Maths Evenings again this year. Two girls and two boys from each house from each grade took part in the Inter-house Evening. A total of 48 children spent a fun evening solving Maths problems. The aim was to get the highest score by selecting graded problems (easier ones being worth less points) and solving them correctly. The winning house of the Grade 4 and 5 section was Fuller. Webb won the Grade 6 and 7 section. The overall winning house was Webb. In the Inter-school Maths Evening, we hosted Curro, Kings School, Penryn and St Peters. Each school sent twelve Grade 7 s to participate. This made a total of sixty children having fun with Maths. The groups were mixed up so it was not a c ompetition between the schools. After a shy greeting to their team mates at the beginning of the evening, all inhibitions were lost once the problem solving began. It was a fun evening of camaraderie and great team work. nMrs n  Cheryl Calmeyer

he annual Afrikaans evening was a highlight on the calendar. The evening is aimed at developing Afrikaans as a second language (or in many cases, a third) and to promote a positive attitude towards the subject. The night was a huge success with more than 160 children from Grade 4 to 7 on stage. The evening was filled with various items of song, dance and poetry. There were dances to Kaptein and Seerower and ballet to Kinders van die Wind to name but a few. Whatever the children did, was done exceptionally and left the crowd cheering and singing along. The evening ended with a spectacular Haka performed by the Grade 7 boys: “’n Boer maak ’n plan…” Congratulations to all the brave participants and a special thanks to the lights and sound boys and all the teachers for their assistance. In the third term we were also treated to a junior and senior Afrikaans theatre production by Redhead Productions. All the children loved the performances, especially the interactive part.

Farewell Nita

We sadly say farewell to Nita Lombard as she is relocating to Canada. As a music teacher, Nita has played a large and significant role in the children’s lives here at Uplands Preparatory School for the last 15 years. She has taught singing (vocal training), piano, recorder, keyboard, guitar and theory of music. Who will ever forget, Ragina Sexwale, Palesa Theledi, Tineke Pienaar, and Chenas Ayers who were some of her stars through the years? We are still privileged to be enjoying the beautiful singing of Sarah Wagner, Adriaan Engelbrecht, Kira Karantonis, Daniela Bezuidenhout and Jade Tinker and several other pupils in the College and Prep. his was an exciting year with new pupils continuing to showcase Uplands Prep School with an excellent standard. Our choirs are outstanding and did us proud at various events throughout the year thanks to the excellent work put in by Mrs Nita Lombard and Mrs Liz Monnig. Marimbas were once again being heard around the music department as all the classes from Grade 0 – Grade 7 worked on pieces for an assembly featuring these delightful renditions. This was the first year in which Grade 0s were tutored on the marimbas, and they proved that there is no stopping them as they performed with confidence. Seven Grade 3 pupils decided that they were not going to wait for Grade 5 to start playing the guitar. They named themselves Acoustic 7, and showed there are no limits when there is enough determination and hard work. Two Grade 3s also broke new ground as Claudia Klesse was our first junior pupil to play the clarinet, and Duncan Pietersen the first junior saxophone player. Duncan is also the first pupil at Uplands Prep School to play the Soprano Saxophone. Several of our pupils performed at the old age homes on various occasions as well as a fundraising concert with the elderly from Macadamia retirement village. Our department hosted both Unisa and Associated Board of Royal School of Music examinations where our pupils did very well. Uplands Prep pupils did us proud at the Nelspruit Eisteddfod with excellent results throughout the instrumental and vocal categories. With music concerts and assemblies added to the busy schedule, there is no doubt that music is alive and well at Uplands.

plands attended a number of friendly independent schools athletics meetings. They were split up into field and track events. A total of two track meetings and field meetings were attended. The track events included sprinting and middle distance while the field events included long jump, high jump and shot put. This allowed more athletes a chance to develop and have the opportunity to represent the school team. These meetings also allowed us to identify talent and select our top athletes to represent Uplands at the Independent Schools athletics, hosted by Curro. The Independent Schools meeting was held at an extremely wet and slippery Curro Nelspruit. Uplands Prep has always been an extremely competitive team, always giving its best and pushing one another further. Unfortunately, Uplands finished second overall, close behind the first place. Athletes that took the limelight were

Sellin de Beer, Amani Omar, Jimi Ogunyemi, Sihle Manonyane and Valentine Hlatshwayo. The top sprinters also got given the chance to participate against 12 other schools at the Rob Ferreira relay and sprints meeting. Our boys and girls did their best, producing some outstanding results and placing in many of the races. The event was one with much spirit and atmosphere, continuing into the evening under the lights. Our annual, tightly contested Inter-house Athletics day was held on the 15th February. It began with the junior primary sprints and field events where all students had the opportunity to participate in a sprints event. The grade 3 students were introduced to the field events where some athletes performed exceptionally well. The top athletes in the junior primary section were: Andile Khoza and Zuna-Maé Lottering.

Uplands Preparatory School - Sport

The senior primary then took to the track and field where a closely contested day was njoyed by all. A large number of records were broken and many more impressive times, e heights and distances were achieved by the athletes. The top athletes were: • Junior Victor Ludorum: Brett Korb and Sellin de Beer • Junior Victrix Ludorum: Amani Omar • Senior Victor Ludorum: Sihle Manonyane • Senior Victrix Ludorum: Valentine Hlatshwayo The 2014 Inter-house champions: Ogilvie followed by Webb (2nd) and Fuller (3rd). Uplands athletes have done us proud this past season. Our athletes participated in a number of circuit meetings and regional qualifiers where the top two or three athletes were invited to the next round’s meeting. Competition on those levels became tougher and tougher. After a number of rounds the athletes qualified to represent their district and then their province, M pumalanga. U7 & U8 Cricket

The U7s and U8s have had a successful Mini Cricket year. They have learnt various ball and batting skills and have made sound progress in these areas. The highlight of our year was the Day Night Mini Cricket Festival held on the Astro at Uplands College. The children had the opportunity to play against other schools and a great evening was had by all. Other festivals were played at St Peter’s School and Riverview. This gave the children a chance to further demonstrate their skills and get exposure to other players. Uplands played well and achieved good results. nMs n  Tamryn Oberholzer

U9A Cricket

U9 cricket becomes a small milestone for young cricketers as they move on to the “hard ball” game. And so it was for the eager young Grade 3s of 2014. I was so impressed by their unwavering enthusiasm which continued throughout the season. I was pleased when young Carolien Pienaar joined the sessions and she soon made her way into the A team. I would like to thank Mrs Lisa Uplands 2014

ezuidenhout the B team coach and my able assistant for all her B help and enthusiasm. Thank you to all the parents for supporting our young cricket stars! We played Penryn twice, narrowly losing the first one and then producing a sound victory in the return game. The team had good wins against White River Primary and Nellies. I look forward to watching these young cricketers build on the skills they have learnt this year and more importantly their love for this great game. nMr n  Dave Ernstzen

U9B Cricket

The U9B team players had very enjoyable cricket term. The boys learnt a great deal from Mr Dave Ernstzen during practice sessions and their enthusiasm and genuine love for the game were wonderful to see. Our games were played against White River Primary, Penryn and Lydenburg. The B team was captained by Bryce, Duncan and Josh. nMrs n  Lisa Bezuidenhout

U10A Cricket

The U10 A side had a mixed bag of results this year. They managed to win 6 of their 8 games and narrowly lost two. Everyone developed tremendously during the season. There was, however, one outstanding achievement during the season. Werno de Kock took 4 wickets for 4 runs in 4 overs versus White River Primary on his debut for the “A” side. All in all, we had great fun and enjoyed the time in the sun with friends and family. nMr n  Hennie Joubert

U10B Cricket

The U10 B cricket season was a short one. The boys were extremely enthusiastic to play the game of cricket which was exciting to see. Over the season we focused more on the development of each player and giving everyone the opportunity to grow their love of the game that is Cricket. Unfortunately we didn’t play as many matches as what we would have liked to, but the ones that we did play were played in a gentleman’s spirit.

U11B Cricket

The U11B cricket season was a short, but fruitful one. All the boys showed utmost commitment towards the team and the school. The season was focused on the development of each individual’s skill and I am certain we accomplished our goals. nMr n  Sifiso Mahima

U12A Cricket

One of our biggest challenges this season was the depth in our batting line up. We did, however, expose the players to some competitive bowling which allowed them the opportunity to develop. Towards the end of the season we put together some comprehensive scores. We managed to win the last 2 matches; Campbell Davies-Webb was the star batsman, scoring 55 runs, not out, against White River Primary. All the boys played good cricket towards the end of the season and were well captained by Caleb Izeboud. nMr n  Sifiso Mahima

nMr n  Celliers Verster

U11A Cricket

This year, I had the privilege of coaching a talented group of individuals for cricket. From the very first practice, we set ourselves goals for the season. We played 10 fixtures in the season. We lost 2 and won 8. The highlights were as follows: The close and hard fought win against Laerskool Nelspruit, a clinical display against Penryn, a superb performance against St. Dunstan’s and a brilliant display of all round cricket against St. David’s. I thoroughly enjoyed watching their progress through the season and I would like to thank them all for the dedication and hard work that they displayed. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs Davies and Mrs Macgregor for scoring and to all moms and dads who supported us.

2nd XI Cricket

We weren’t the best and we certainly weren’t the worst, but one thing I can say with absolute confidence is that we were “mighty”. The reason I believe we were so “mighty” was because of the culture that was instilled into the team. We valued the essence of the game and that is to foremost have fun and to play hard with true Uplands spirit. The character of the players really inspired me as a coach and many went from cricket pessimists to cricket lovers. The “Mighty Second Team” was unbeaten through most of the season, with victories over Nelspruit, St. Peters, Flamboyant and Riverview. Their only loss being against Barberton and their reaction in wanting a rematch just shows their passion for the team, game and most importantly for the school. nMr n  Celliers Verster

1st XI Cricket

There is something special about Prep school cricket. It may be the innocent enthusiasm shown by every player, the spirit of the team, the noticeable player development, or the fact that young pupils are slowly becoming gentlemen and cementing their love for the great game of cricket. Uplands is blessed with many talented individuals. I was privileged enough to hand out 14 green Uplands Baggy caps this season to an extremely talented bunch of players. The 1st XI of 2014: Kieran McDonald (Captain), Dean van Zyl, Mark Botha, Chris Prettejohn, Nick Smythe, Ndumiso Nopote, Rory Kane-Berman, Jakob de Villiers, Katie Prior, Nicholas Brotherton, Michael Fry, Campbell D avies-Webb, Kyle Klesse and Luke Lourens. The season comprised of 16 matches. 7 league games, 5 tour games, 1 friendly game and 3 festival games. The League: The 7 matches played were against somewhat of a variety of strength. Laerskool Nelspruit proving to be the only tough opposition, they were the only side to bowl us out this season. We have had some exceptional results and performances. The side was growing in confidence and building on self-belief. The fixtures we have in the area are always well contested, but did bring about a sense of disappointment with regards to the quality of opposition and the focus of playing the game of cricket. A tour to remember: We were fortunate enough to have been on a brilliant tour to Gauteng, playing much bigger schools. We could test ourselves against some of the top prep schools in the province, such as: St Benedict’s, Garsfontein, WHPS, Lynwood and St Paulus. Not only was the cricket on an impressive level, but the squad had the opportunity to mingle with the Titans and train in the CSA Cricket Centre of Excellence. The cricket match we played against Laerskool Garsfontein

Uplands 2014

(a school of 1800 children) where Uplands chased down 159 (25 overs) with 1 ball to spare and 7 wickets in hand was memorable. The Inaugural Matthew Prior Cricket Festival: The festival is an annual event hosted by Uplands Prep in memory of Matthew John Prior who sadly passed away whilst opening the batting for Uplands Prep 1st XI in Lydenburg on the 16th September 2010. In celebration of his life and the spirit in which Matthew played the game, this festival is hosted to strive to reinforce passion for the game of cricket, the spirit and sportsmanship with which it should be played, and the bond it creates between teammates and opponents. This year’s inaugural festival was played between Uplands Prep, St David’s (Johannesburg), St Dunstan’s (Johannesburg) and Penryn Prep. It included both U11 and U13 teams. Friday was a 30 over match, Saturday a 50 over match and Sunday ended with a 20/20 match. This festival has the potential to become a prestigious cricket festival with a focus on further developing Uplands Cricket and increase the much deserved opportunities for our players. Congratulations to Mark Botha, Ndumiso Nopote, Kyle Klesse and Luke Lourens for being selected to represent Mpumalanga this year and to Katie Prior for being selected into the U19 Mpumalanga Girls’ squad. We are extremely proud of you all. I would like to thank the parents for all the extra effort and help put into the season…scoring, fundraising and being supportive of the staff. A big thanks to Mr Sieb’t and Mr Verster for their on-going support for the game and the players. I would like to specifically thank the players who made this season a memorable one for me. To my captain, Kieran McDonald, I have enjoyed the season and will be following your cricket in the future with a keen eye. nMr n  Bernie Wheeler

Girls’ Hockey Report nThis n  page is sponsored by the #LourensFamily #Girls’HockeyReport

G

irls’ hockey this season has gone from strength to strength and the girls are realising that the game is all about team work. The spirit and enthusiasm shone throughout the season in all age groups with some amazing victories and equally amazing losses. Our U7, U8 and U9 girls participated in three mini-hockey festivals in which they blossomed as they put to the test their newly acquired skills. The term ended with the three sports souses competing against each other. Fuller was the overall winner, followed closely by Webb and then Ogilvie. The U10 - Open girls entered the Ehlanzeni Hockey League, which gave them the opportunity to play competitive hockey every Monday against the other schools in the region. The practice and experience obtained from these games are invaluable. The season ended with the fun-filled House matches. Well done to all the girls on a very successful and exciting hockey season. Keep practising and keep on enjoying this beautiful game. We owe our successes to the Uplands band of wonderful hockey coaches. They did not just teach the girls what happens between the lines; they taught life skills such as teamwork, correct coping mechanisms for wins and losses, leadership and fun. That, after all, is the purpose of sport. Thank you to all the coaches for all your hard work, dedication, skill and time. The girls have learnt so much under your capable hands.

U7 Girls’ Hockey

The Grade one hockey girls played three mini-hockey festivals this year: The White River Primary, Numbi and Riverview Festivals. From not knowing how to hold a hockey stick at the beginning of the second term, they made astounding progress and won most of their matches. Mrs Chantel Guthrie helped with coaching and umpiring and her great organisational skills helped a great deal when the three teams sometimes played on different fields at the same time. Thank you, Chantel! nMrs n  Sally Wiggill

U8 Girls’ Hockey

The Grade 2 girls had a wonderful season of hockey this term. They progressed beautifully in their individual skills and in their teamwork. We were fortunate enough to play in numerous hockey festivals and really did Uplands proud in all of the games played. These little amateur hockey pros were supported by their parents at every turn and in every type of weather. I can’t wait to see what these young ladies are capable of next year! nMrs n  Naomi Spencer

nMrs n  Sharonn Allmark (Girls Sports Co-ordinator)

U9 Girls’ Hockey

The U9 hockey girls had a fabulous hockey season this year. We played in a number of mini-hockey festivals and won most of our games. The girls also played some games in the week and once again our results were great. I have really enjoyed coaching these girls who were always passionate and co-operative during our sports sessions. nMrs n  Heather Prior

U10 Girls’ Hockey

The U10 girls had an amazing season of hockey, showing great enthusiasm and spirit. This wonderful energy never wavered through fitness, skills development or game play. It was an eye opener to watch their improvement through the term from a bunch of girls hitting a ball, to a “team”, effectively channelling and thinking of their passes. nMs n  Teighyn Allmark

U11 Girls’ Hockey

The U11 girls had a great season of hockey this term. We had an A and a B team and it was wonderful to see each child develop her hockey skills. Our A team didn’t win all of their games. However, by the end of the season, they were playing good, positional hockey and using the tactics and skills which they had been taught in each of their league matches. At this age, developing a good understanding of the game and creating a love for the game, is far more important than winning. I believe that these two things will make them a force to be reckoned with in the future. nMrs n  Lisa Karantonis

U12 Girls’ Hockey

The season was filled with various highs and lows, as with anything in life. The highs were the games they won, the friends they have made and the fun they have had in the process. The low of the season has to be the fact that many schools don’t have U12 sides, which meant that our teams didn’t have as many games as in the past. The season included league games, festivals and inter-house matches and ended with Mpumalanga skills trials in Witbank. We were very proud of Valentine Hlatshwayo for being chosen for the second round of the Mpumalanga trials. Special mention needs to be made of Nalyne Govene for showing such good potential as a goalie, as this is only her first season of playing hockey. nMrs n  Pat McCreedy

Open Girls’ 2nd XI Hockey

The Second Girls Hockey Team was a positive and enthusiastic team with loads of potential. They played in a number of festivals and ‘clicked’ well as a team. I was pleased with their performances and they held their own in many games, especially considering many of their opponents were first teams. There were a number of girls who played outstanding hockey and improved so much through the season that they had opportunities to play in some of the first team games. nMrs n  Alison Emery

Open Girls’ 1st XI Hockey

The Girls’ First XI Hockey Team had a very successful season this year. It started in the second term with skills being taught and game plans put into place. After a hockey tour to Durban with mixed results, the girls came back with enthusiasm and did well in their league matches. Although they didn’t win all their games, they were by far the superior team as far as vision and quality passing was concerned. This will stand them in good stead for the coming seasons at College. Well done on a most enjoyable season, girls! nMrs n  Alison Emery

Boys’ Hockey Report

A definition of unity...

U7 Boys’ Hockey

The U7 hockey boys had a very exciting hockey season learning the basic skills and positions in hockey. They attended a number of mini-hockey festivals including White River Primary and Riverview in Malelane. The boys were very enthusiastic on and off the field and showed great sportsmanship no matter whether they won or lost. Thank you to the boys for an awesome season! nMs n  Megan Wilson

U8 Boys’ Hockey

Practices were well attended and the boys are enthusiastic and determined. Their skills are improving all the time. This season, hockey festivals were held at White River Primary, Numbi and Malelane. It is wonderful to see them developing into good little players. We had lots of fun with the U8 boys during this hockey season. nMrs n  Kathy Vincent

U9 Boys’ Hockey

U9 boys’ hockey is one of the most exciting and entertaining sport codes to watch and coach. They are always 100% committed and dedicated to their teams. “Are we playing a game today?” is the most frequently asked question. “No boys, first some skills!” is the usual reply. We had plenty of games this season as we had four hockey festivals, at White River Primary, Numbi, Riverview and the Flamboyant Twilight festival. The boys applied their knowledge well and played structured hockey, mostly getting their feet out the way and not playing too dangerously. Well done boys, you had a fantastic season of hockey. nMrs n  Kristina Rubino

U10 Boys’ Hockey

The U10 boys’ hockey team treated their coach to an outstanding season with plenty fun filled and exciting matches. Although several matches were cancelled due to opponents not being able to provide a side, they still managed to play 10 games. They won 9 out of these 10 matches and progressed to winning the Ehlanzeni Championship. Each and every boy who participated played with such zest. I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful little team. nMr n  Quint Sieb’t

U11 Boys’ Hockey

The 2014 season was definitely one for the books. I was fortunate enough to have an incredibly talented, capable and confident squad of 22 boys. All extremely committed to the sport and to the school. The season was full of ups and downs for both the league and festival squads. The squads started as a group of individuals but ended the season as a team that played good hockey together. This made me a very proud coach. I would like to congratulate the A side for their outstanding performances in the Mpumalanga playoffs and for the bronze medal for which they worked so hard for. nn Mr Celliers Verster

U12 Boys’ Hockey

The U12 boys are an extremely talented bunch of hockey players with much enthusiasm and spirit. The U12 boys had yet another golden season. Winning all their league games, they qualified to play in the Ehlanzeni finals. Here they won against Laerskool Bergland on the ever stressful 8-seconds shoot out and was crowned Ehlanzeni champs. It was the third consecutive year they won. Aidan de Bruno-Austin bravely took up the role of goal keeper, this being a brand new experience. He was exceptional, always giving his best and showing a talent which will most certainly develop in the future. The lads then faced new opposition in the Mpumalanga playoffs and finals weekend. Losing their first game in two years was much needed motivation to not relax and underestimate the opponents. The side went from strength to strength, playing brilliant, structured, passing hockey, making it tough for the opposition to compete. Uplands won the Mpumalanga Champs for the second consecutive year. A special mention to the players that were selected to represent Mpumalanga Uplands 2014

in the 2015 U13 Inter-Provincial Tournaments: Vaughn van Reenen, Luke Lourens, Michael Fry (U13A) and Sam Black (U13C). Without the ongoing support and positive contribution from the parents and coaches, this impressive season would not have been possible. I look forward to following their hockey futures! nn Mr Bernie Wheeler

Open Boys’ Hockey

It has been a real pleasure to work with both the 1st XI and 2nd XI this past season. Our 2nd XI had far more match time this year compared to previous years and they acquitted themselves admirably by winning far more games than losing. This year certainly was a season of, “what should have been!” for the 1st XI. It really is the greatest pleasure for a coach to have the opportunity to work with boys who clearly want to be coached and are consistently keen to improve their game both individually and as a team. If we had to be honest, after our initial start to the season, with two losses in the league things do not look great. However, this certainly took a turn during our third game, when the boys played an expansive, attractive game of passing hockey that lead to a convincing win against the league leaders at the time. From there on out the boys secured wins in every game and we were devastated to find out our initial two losses cost us the league. We did not go any further this season. The kind of hockey these boys played at the end of the season made them a formidable force, and I truly believe this team could have gone further during the knock out section and possibly have followed all the way through. I guess an early first lesson in sport, for some of the boys! nMr n  Alex Hall

T

he 2014 netball season was really exciting to watch, as the girls showed off their newly acquired, and many old established skills and ball play. We won a few and lost a few, but the important aspect was that all age groups made progress throughout the season. The Uplands girls concentrated on ball skills, attack and defence skills and strategy play on the court. These were put to the test in competitive games throughout the season in the friendly league against schools in the district. Our annual highlight is the Uplands Beauleau weekend. This year was our turn to travel. The experience of staying with host families and the new and old friendships that are established between the children is an amazing life lesson. The term ended with the camaraderie between the sports houses. These fun, friendly matches were the climax to a wonderful netball season. The girls displayed true sportsmanship and team spirit in every way. My special thanks to our amazing band of netball coaches. The knowledge, commitment and enthusiasm you pass on to your teams are evident in the children’s love for the sport.

nMrs n  Sharonn Allmark (Girls’ Sports Co-ordinator)

U7 Netball

This year we had 28 very enthusiastic grade one girls, who wanted to play all the time. We had two festivals in which each little girl had a chance to play. I am sure that they have enjoyed the season and learned to love the game.

U8 Netball

The U8 Netball girls learnt a lot of new skills during training this year. They did not play in the league yet, but participated in mini-festivals. The rules are not as strict yet and allow the girls to learn the game in a fun, excitement-filled environment. One of the main lessons in netball is team play: passing the ball to an open player and ensuring that the ball reaches the goal post quickly. We had to work quite hard on teaching the girls not to look for a friend, but for an open player, who would be able to keep the game flowing. We also had to focus on catching and passing and no running with the ball. It will be great to watch this team of girls develop their skills, as they are a strong group of individual athletes. nMrs n  Angie Harrison

U9 Netball

So much fun was had by the U9 netball girls this season. We managed to hold our ground and make our coach proud on numerous occasions against other schools. We had an awesome season and were successful in the majority of our matches. Netball, netball, we love netball!! nMrs n  Naomi Spencer

U10 Netball

We had a wonderful, busy netball season. We made many new friends amongst new schools on our playing list like Barberton and Clivia. It was also great to see our ‘old’ friends from Penryn, Curro, St Peters and Kings School. A game we won’t easily forget was when we travelled to Komatipoort for almost six hours in a bus (there and back of course). It was 32º C on the netball court. The cherry on top of the season was the Winter Netball Festival. We experienced wonderful camaraderie against Unicorn who came all the way from Limpopo Province and Riverview Prep from Malelane. The girls loved hosting. Each netball girl got a chance to play at least one game this season and many girls got a turn to experience the responsibilities of being a captain. Thank you Mrs Allmark, for organising such an action-packed netball season and Mrs Choonara, for being the best ‘right hand’ coach. My favourite part of the season was coaching the most enthusiastic and eager netball teams ever! nMrs n  Renata Stewart

U11 Netball

What a wonderful season we had on the netball fields! The season started with a gruelling set of trials and the competition was great. We managed to field three teams. We started off on a challenging note against Beauleau in Gauteng. The girls all played with determination but did not win the matches. The girls were keen to improve and were committed to learn new skills. We ended the season with a busy netball week. We joined the rugby boys and drove all the way to Komatipoort in a rickety bus. The A and B teams won both their games and that made the long travel worthwhile. The B team struggled during some matches this season, but tried their best and had a wonderful attitude on and off the field. The C team did not play as many matches, but they stayed committed to netball

68

and worked hard during all the practices. We ended the season with a festival and the girls performed well. The spirit on and off the courts were wonderful and our girls did war cries with the touring schools. I would like to thank the moms and dads for their continuous support. nMrs n  Riana Pienaar

U12 Netball

From the very beginning of the netball season it was evident that the 2014 U12 girls were a talented group. We had enough girls to make up three teams and every girl had an opportunity to play in at least one match. The commitment of the girls throughout the season was admirable and we managed to fit in some extra, unscheduled matches because of their enthusiasm. It was an absolute pleasure working with this group throughout the season. nn Mrs Cheryl Calmeyer

Netball Opens 2014

We had a challenging netball season this year as competition was very stiff. It took the girls a while to start working together as a team and focus on what was really important. Participating in the league also gave the girls some exposure to proper netball skills and I hope they have learnt to take the sport more seriously if they want to continue playing it in future. I had some promising netball players this year, some of whom unfortunately only blossomed at the end of the season. Nevertheless, I truly hope that they will continue playing the game. Always remember to work hard towards your goals, as they won’t come to you! nMrs n  Maryke de Wet

U7 Soccer

The most rewarding thing about coaching sport, is coaching the younger age groups and seeing them simply play for the love of playing. I’m sure they all play to win, but no one seems to know the score at the end… making everyone a winner. The U7 soccer boys played in a number of festivals against many other schools, a rotational approach is used to allow all players the opportunity to showcase their passion and energy on the field. The boys always played with heart, never giving less than 100%.

U10 A Soccer

The U10 soccer boys were a very focused and competitive group. Right from the first practice until the last match they played, they showed and proved to be a force to be reckoned with. The team had a formidable attacking pair, a dedicated midfield and an outstanding defence. The team had a brilliant season and only lost a single match. All the boys played a huge role in the team’s success. Well done boys on a wonderful season, it was a privilege coaching you this year. nMr n  Sifiso Mahima

nMr n  Hennie Joubert

U8 Soccer

The U8 boys had a very successful season. They played in two friendly festivals and many inter-class games. The boys must be congratulated for their team spirit and their super display of sportsmanship. Their skills really improved throughout the season. A special thanks to Mr Mahima for helping with the coaching. nMs n  Laura Squires

U9 Soccer

The U9 boys had a successful season of soccer this term. I was so impressed with their enthusiasm and team spirit with regards to matches against other schools as well as their training sessions. We had three teams that played in soccer festivals and the boys proved to be great ambassadors for Uplands Preparatory due to their hard work and great manners on and off the field. Win or lose, the U9 soccer boys came off the field with a smile on their faces. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching these great sportsmen this year and I look forward to further success on the soccer field in the years to come.

U11 Soccer

It was yet another exciting soccer season for the boys with great enthusiasm shown by all. I was so encouraged by the sheer commitment displayed and how well the boys worked together. We learnt that it’s always good to be friends first on the field and then work together for a common goal. Winning is always a bonus but it’s the sportsmanship that counts. The U11s were stars at showing just this. In true Uplands spirit they won 8 out of 10 matches played and were always complimentary towards the opponent. Each and every U11 boy (both A and B teams) gave of their utmost best and fought hard until the end. Thank you for flying the Uplands flag high. nMr n  Quint Sieb’t

3rd Team Soccer

The 3rd team soccer season was one for the books. Faced with playing 2nd and 1st teams in many occasions the boys put up their hands and came together as a team. This team spirit never faded and in the end gave them some impressive results. nMr n  Sifiso Mahima

2nd Team Soccer

My first ever season as a soccer coach was one for the memory books. I was faced with a large pool of enthusiastic and talented boys. This made me happy, but it also made the selection process more difficult. When I finally settled on a squad it was all systems go. Every boy that played for the second team gave their all and showed an incredible amount of heart when our backs were against the wall. This made me extremely proud. It showed that the boys had passion for the sport and most importantly for the school. With most of the boys being U12s, I really look forward to see what they can achieve next year! nMr n  Celliers Verster

1st Team Soccer

This season we had a very balanced first team with a few boys who had first team experience from last year and some eager new members. Our goal for this year was to continually improve throughout the season and play the game to the very best of our ability.

74

What impressed me the most about this side was their commitment and illingness to always learn. They applied themselves at practice and managed to w put our game plan into action on match days. The highlights of the season for me had to be our hard fought win over Penryn and our successful tour to Durban. While on tour we faced three tough opponents. Our first game was against Chelsea Preparatory. Even though we didn’t play the greatest soccer on the day, it showed the boys that we had to really grind it out and be patient. The game ended in a 4-2 win. Our second game was against Brighton Beach Senior Primary School. This would prove to be our toughest game. They were a well drilled and physical team and all their players play club soccer as well. We played hard, uncompromising soccer and we were rewarded with a hard fought 1 – 0 victory. Our final game of the tour was against Durban North College. Once again the boys had to dig deep and after a serious half time talk, we managed to secure the victory by 2 goals to 1. We played 14 games in total this season. We won 10, lost 3 and drew 1. A very successful season indeed! I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all the boys involved with the First Team squad throughout the season and I sincerely wish the Grade 7 boys all the best for the future. nMr n  Jacques Müller Uplands Preparatory School - Sport

U10 Rugby

When the first rugby session started, I was faced with 25 energetic, eager and passionate boys. The practice started and from the word go it was clear that we had to focus on basic skills as these are the basis for any good rugby player. After some really difficult sessions of hard work we were finally ready to play our first match, which the boys were incredibly excited about. By this time there was a total of 32 boys that attended practice and all showed dedication. The 2014 season was built on the foundation skills the boys would need for their futures as rugby players. The emphasis was on developing skills, knowledge and passion for the game. I believe we succeeded in that and it was shown by the amount of heart the boys displayed on the field. I would like to congratulate the boys on a fantastic season and I look forward to working with them again. Our results for the season were: Played 5 Won 4. nMr n  Celliers Verster

U11 Rugby

The 2014 season was always going to be a competitive and exciting one. Uplands had entered the Ehlanzeni League for the first time, with the U11 and 1st XV. The U11 boys are extremely talented and competitive in any activity they do. The season kicked off with the first game against Barberton. This would be the first ever rugby fixtures hosted by Uplands Prep, at the Prep. The game got off to a cracking pace and physicality, with Uplands coming out on top: 17-12. The stand out for the season was the team spirit and heart shown by all. The boys were well disciplined and enjoyed pulling the green and gold over their shoulders to represent Uplands. Playing for the man next to him, this special bunch of boys will go from strength to strength. Season: Played 6, Won 4 and lost 2 The maturity and enthusiasm of the lads made it a pleasure to coach, I am proud of everyone that attended practice and matches. Well done on a brilliant season! nMr n  Bernie Wheeler

Open Rugby Report The rugby boys of 2014 were part of history in the making for Uplands Prep as we hosted our first ever home rugby fixture this year. This was definitely a highlight and they enjoyed the fanfare around the official opening of the rugby field. The College 1st XV lined the field as the Prep 1st team ran on. Thank you to the Leavers of 2013 for their kind donation of the combined rugby soccer posts! The season began with the team playing in the White River Rugby Festival and you soon realise that it will be tough going when you are the only English school at the event. None the less the boys showed guts and battled it out over the four games. The highlight was definitely Cray’s well-crafted try as he received a high ball on the left wing. Unfortunately Adriaan fractured his arm as he made a try saving tackle. I was pleased that he had recovered in time to join the boys on tour at the end of the season. Aidan von Benecke-Jordaan our tight-head prop captained the 1st XV and Chris Prettejohn looked after the backs as the vice-captain. We had a formidable front row with Jack, Julio, Sibonelo and Finn adding to the scrums. Kieran, Nicholas and Jakob developed as sound lock forwards and Artur, Reece, Kyle, Sihle Mpangane and Caleb all played in the loose trio during the season. The scrum half position was filled by Mark, Dean and Kyle. There was some good

80

pace from the backs in Bevan, Munesu, Vaughn, Campbell, Sihle Manonyane, Ndumiso, Keane, Ezra and Cray. I must commend Kyle for his willingness to play in any position and he definitely became the super all-rounder in the side. The fixtures included Barberton, Clivia, Curro, Penryn, Numbi and Komatipoort with the 2nd XV getting games against Penryn and St Peter’s. The 1st XV squad toured at the end of the season and boys really enjoyed their trip to the Independent Schools Rugby Festival in George. This event was hosted at Glenwood House and most of the schools invited are boys’ prep schools. It certainly was a beautiful setting with the Outeniqua Mountains ever present. We played 3 matches against St John’s, St Peter’s and Somerset College. The results did not reflect the effort the boys put in, but they certainly had a taste of tough rugby games. Thank you to all the parents for your support this year and I wish to thank all the Grade 7s for a really enjoyable season. Thanks must also go to Mr Sifiso Mahima, Mr Alex Hall and Mr Bernie Wheeler for their time spent coaching the boys. Thank you to the Smythe family, Mark Gillie, Harold Ferguson and Ryan Botha for their assistance with the tour. nMr n  Dave Ernstzen

his year tennis made history at Uplands. We entered six teams into the Lowveld schools tennis league. We had two open girls and boys teams and an U11 girls and boys team. Although not all the schools entered so many teams, we managed to play quite a lot of tennis matches. Unfortunately the extremely wet summer also played a role and the season took a long time to be finalised. Our Open boys team consists of many talented and proficient tennis players and their enthusiasm for the game is infectious. They set a positive example to the younger players and I am looking forward to some wonderful tennis from them in the next few years. Thanks to all the excellent coaches in our area, we

have a lot of depth amongst our boys. The Open girls had quite a tough time this year, but I am sure as they continue training and developing their skills, that we will have more success in the future. It was the first season that there was an U11 league. This will stand tennis in the Lowveld in good stead as players will be exposed to matches and being a bit more competitive, especially for the girls. Once again the boys are a force to be reckoned with and with many of the younger girls showing potential, I am sure tennis will go from strength to strength at Uplands. nMrs n  Kristina Rubino

In keeping with past years, my report is in line with the theme for the magazine which is Unity. U - Unity.

This is certainly fitting, as Uplands Prep and Uplands College go forward as one school with one new badge. The College Head boy and Head girl of 2014 gave our pupils a presentation at an assembly calling us one family. I was extremely ill in May and June and was away from school. I received beautiful cards from all the children and the concern from the community was overwhelming. My department certainly united and not only produced a play, but checked reports, drafted programmes and coped very well without me. I know doing my job as well as their own, was taxing and I am so grateful that the teachers in our department are able to work as a team. Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success”. Thank you for your support, unity and success. N - New and old.

Traditionally our staff turnover is very low. This year we are unfortunately losing 3 teachers. Mrs Vincent leaves us after 15 years of teaching at Uplands. Mrs Vincent is the epitome of “a lady” and her quiet and sensible dedication will be missed. Miss Oberholzer will move to Grade 3 and Mrs Rubino will go to Grade 2. Mrs Claudia Harris filled in for a term while Mrs Haig was on long leave and she fell in love with Uplands, as we fell in love with her! She is very excited about going into Grade 1 next year. We also have some changes in the pre-school with Teacher Amber - now Mrs Pretorius - moving to Grade 000 as Mrs Mandy de Villiers relocates to Queenstown. Mandy’s vibrancy and passion for teaching will mean that Amber has large boots to fill. Teacher Jackie will be a classroom assistant in Grade 000. Kerri Moolman has been with Amber in After-care and she is sadly moving back to Johannesburg. The After-care will have 2

new teachers next year. Megan Wilson and Simoné Koetzee have been interns for the year, Megan heads off to Rhodes University to study teaching and Simoné will continue her studies through Unisa. We wish our departing teachers happy new beginnings. I - Interesting events.

Uplands Earth child dress up day was proof that our children and parents united to create awareness of the environment! The Easter Bonnet Parade was another opportunity to showcase our creativity. Our Foundation Phase play – “Around the World” was an amazing portrayal of talent on the part of the teachers and children. The participation in the Nelspruit Speech and Drama Eisteddfod resulted in outstanding achievement for all our class and individual items. Our very own Webster House has been awarded a Blue Plaque. Webster, the cat, was rescued, found a new home in Grade 3K and had a kitten. We introduced an Inter-house Public Speaking Competition this year, and watched one child per house, per class doing his or her presentation. Well done to everyone who took part. We participated in a number of sports fixtures this year. The Day Night mini cricket festival on the College astro was a highlight. The Grade 7 pupils had a team teaching session with small groups of Grade 3s to help them grasp certain difficult Maths concepts. The Grade 8s at the College made a book for each of our pupils as a Life Orientation project. This was not an English project and we are aware of some grammatical errors - this will be an annual event as part of the unity between schools. We had a tea for the reading mums to thank them for giving up their time to listen to reading. I would like to extend my thanks to the other mums and dads who have helped with transport to fixtures, made costumes for concerts or helped in any other way. Uplands 2014

The Grade 1s went to the “Care for the Wild” sanctuary and Kruger Park and were treated by ‘Kids in Kruger’ to a game drive on big open vehicles. They had a lovely morning and a picnic at Skukuza. They also learned about potting seedlings at the White River Garden Pavilion. They did a bird walk, made bird feeders and enjoyed Pirate Day and a tea party. The Grade 2s went to the Botanical Gardens for a bug hunt. They had 2 trips to the Water Park and a demonstration on the Spotted Eagle Owl and a Barn Owl from the “Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Centre”. They had a Castle dress up day, learnt a court dance, went on a treasure hunting crusade and enjoyed a banquet. The Grade 3s held a successful Market Day. They worked hard and some donated 10% of their profits to S.P.C.A. – a total of R1 360. They went to Likweti for their Game Ranger day and to Badplaas and Chimp Eden on their field trip. They helped man stations for the Dog Walk in aid of White River Animal Clinic. Y - Yippee - The year is finished!

Every grade develops differentiating character traits. You hear teachers saying how special, how bright, how naughty the grade as a whole is. This group has always had a wonderful reputation. “You are going to love this class,” has been echoed as they have moved through the school. Thank you Grade 3s for being such delightful children. Thank you for your manners, your work ethic and your talents. Unity means oneness, or togetherness. When there is oneness, there is likely to be more strength in opinion, more strength in action, and more strength in character. Remember your unity and your strength as you move to the Senior Phase. We hope to still hear about your good reputation when you get to Grade 7! nn Mrs Angie Harrison

Our “Dinosaur” theme is always an exciting time in class. We visited Sudwala and learnt so much. This year, we hid some animal bones in the sandpit for the children to find. A trip to Badplaas

W

e arrived at school on Thursday morning the 16th of October 2014. All the children were so excited to go on our field trip to Badplaas. When we got onto the bus, we started singing songs. After a while we arrived at Chimp Eden. They were really kind to us and even did a presentation for us about chimps. After the presentation they showed us some chimps. Then we had some delicious snacks. When we were finished at Chimp Eden we got back onto the bus and headed to Badplaas. When we arrived at Badplaas we met our instructors. Their names were: Telly Tully, Niger, Drogba and Mel. They were all cool instructors and gave us awesome activities to do. They told us to get into groups of four. We all wanted to know why we had to get into groups of four. They told us that that is how many kids stay in a dormitory. Then we went into our dormitories and unpacked. The instructors called us and put us into four groups and took us to do some activities. Before we did the activities we had lunch. The lunch was really good. We went on the zip-line, made mini

hotels, went on the slides and swam in heated and cold pools. Unfortunately the day was over but we all had the best day ever. When we got back, all of us stayed in our dormitories for a while until supper was ready. When supper was ready we all ran into the dining hall and were very excited to know what was for supper. It was spaghetti and mince. Delicious!! We all ate all our food and guess what was for pudding…? Ice-cream! Yum, yum, yum! When everyone was finished with supper we all got into our PJs and formed a circle around the garden to learn some new songs. We learned about 6 new songs and they were awesome. After that, they told us to get ready to go to bed. They all made sure that we were safe in our dormitories. We woke up early the next morning, ate breakfast and played Mini Olympics. The Mini Olympics was fun because they were crazy and we all looked hilarious. We then said goodbye to everyone and got back on the bus and went back to school. nCarolien n  Pienaar and Bella Kay Uplands Preparatory School - Class news

There was a good variety of food to be had, unusual gifts and crafts and the games were popular. The Courageous Challenges The Courageous Challenges were slightly different this year. The two compulsory challenges remained, which was giving twelve hours to the school and twelve hours to the community. Then the pupils had to choose two challenges to complete from each of the following categories: Environmental Challenge, Sport Challenge, Outdoor Challenge, Spiritual Challenge and Cultural Challenge. They had more variety from which to choose, but they had to reach outside their comfort zone by choosing different activities in order to get their Courageous Challenges Award completed. A successful ‘Frog Evening’ was introduced as well as some other interesting activities. Well done to the following children who believed in themselves and went for this year’s award. Fieldtrip -Blyde River Adventures The Grade 5s left on Tuesday the 10th of April to embark on the ever-exciting fieldtrip to Blyde River Adventures. The first stop was the Elephant Sanctuary where they were able to touch and feed the elephants. Some were lucky enough to get a huge elephant kiss. From there it was a long journey to Blyde River Adventures. On arrival, dorms were allocated and a ‘lecture’ on the do’s and the don’ts was given. The kids were divided into groups and they played games. Each group had to make up a war cry and emblem which included the ‘Big Five’. Wednesday was Survival Day! Each pupil had to cook their own breakfast - which was “stokbrood” - around the fire. After breakfast we headed to the river for our first taste of white water rafting. It was scary, but fun, even for those who could not stay in the boat. After lunch, the children were separated into three groups. Each group took turns to practise for the talent show, play paintball and snorkel in the dam.

They soon realised that they could not ‘hide’ behind trees in paintball as the teachers would pot them from the back if they were too scared. The day was rounded off with a potjiekos competition. It was a super way to end survival day. Thursday morning was cold and drizzling. The Grade 5s headed to Moholoholo to hear all about the endangered birds and animals. After a freezing morning at Moholoholo, we headed up to look over the Blyde Dam. It was too cold so we headed to Swadini and the warm pools. Fun was had playing ‘catches’ in the pool. After Swadini, we headed to the waterfall where some were brave enough to jump off the five metre waterfall. We headed back to camp and had a warm shower. That evening, there was a fun general knowledge quiz. On Friday morning we headed home after a fun and unforgettable field trip. nMrs n  Lindsay Rogerson

Market Day On Friday 19 September, Uplands held its annual Market Day. This day is a huge undertaking by the Grade 6s. They learn the skills of entrepreneurship by creating, budgeting, marketing and selling their goods or services to the rest of the school. The Grade 6s spent the last few weeks of term three vigorously preparing for the big day. They advertised their products by making lovely, attention-grabbing posters which were put up around the school. At first, the weather played its part as about forty stalls, each manned by one or two young entrepreneurs, began taking shape at 07:30 sharp. There was a great buzz and excitement as 09:45 approached and Market Day was declared open. For the next 2 hours our creative entrepreneurs were hard at work at selling, selling and selling. Not even the rain could stop them! nMrs n  Danielle Steenkamp

The Grade 6s were once again extremely fortunate to go to Tshukudu. On arrival, we were met with an awesome surprise. As we drove in, Ntombi, a beautiful female cheetah was basking in the sun on the driveway. We were all excited to be able to get so close to her. She allowed us to stroke her and take gorgeous photos with her. The rangers then briefed the children on the rules of being around Ntombi and on how they should behave in the camp. This was the start of what proved to be an amazing experience. Over the next few days we went on several game drives around the reserve. We were lucky to see some beautiful sightings, which included a pride of lions around their kill and some close encounters with elephants. We were treated to a dissection of an impala by a local vet. It was an intriguing experience and the children never once hesitated to participate. The weather was warm and sunny for four of the five days and only on

Uplands 2014

Thursday did it rain. This didn’t stop us from having fun though. Dressed in rain jackets we went out on a long bush walk where we learnt about plants, trees and spotted some game. The walk ended in an elephant dung fight and we all arrived at camp covered in elephant dung and laughing. Another highlight, was the night we spent under the stars in a boma. It was fun sleeping outside while listening to all the wild animals’ calls. The children are to be commended for their bravery. Like everything in life, all good things come to an end and we finally had to pack up and head on back home. It was sad to leave, but the children were left with beautiful memories of their experiences. A big thank you to Mrs Calmeyer and Mr Verster for joining in on the fun. nMr n  Quint Sieb’t

Field trip - Spirit of Adventure On Monday the 10th of March, the Grade 7s departed for their annual trip to Spirit of Adventure. We soon arrived at our destination near Rustenburg. We all gathered under cover and were taught how to apply KISS to all aspects of life. Kiss stands for the following: K – Know your task. I – Involve everyone. S – Set an example. S – Support. This word helped us to complete stalk the lantern, go-karts, rock climbing, obstacle course, rafting and brain teasers successfully. On the Thursday we left Spirit of Adventure and we headed off to Gold Reef City. We were given our tickets and we then invaded the theme park! The Tower of Terror, Anaconda and the Golden Loop were some of the favourite rides of the day. After a great day, filled with excitement and terror, we headed for Uplands 2014

ontecasino. Once we arrived, we were allowed to choose a restaurant of M our choice. We did a tour of the Montecasino complex and then it was off to the movies. We watched Ride Along but some people did not even see the whole movie as they were so tired from the previous few days! Our overnight stay was at the Sun I Hotel. There was no time for giggling and playing around as we were so tired that we fell asleep immediately. On the Friday morning we were up early and we made our way back to school. We were so sad it was all over as it was the best field trip we had ever had! We would like to thank Mr Müller, Mrs Carlse and Mr Hall for accompanying us on the tour. nKira n  Karantonis and Mishca Jacobs

Leavers’ Dinner 2014 nThis n  page is sponsored by the #WarrenerFamily

T

he Leavers’ Dinner was once again ably put together by the Grade 6 Mums. The theme this year was Masquerade and Mr Dave Ernstzen spoke to the Leavers about their own personal branding. He used popular brands to describe the children and their time here at Uplands. Two Grade 7s, Summer Clifford-Kotze and Chris Prettejohn, reminded the parents and teachers of their experiences at school, some of which included actual learning. Mr Chaz Prettejohn spoke from a parent’s perspective of what Uplands has meant to them. A huge thank you must go out to Mrs Kerry Coetzee and her team for tirelessly putting together a sophisticated and memorable evening.

118

“You’re a sky full of stars, you light up the path.” There are so many stars in the Universe, but we have our very own stars here tonight. In your time at Uplands we have seen you grow and develop, mature and take on more responsibility. A Hebrew proverb states that “a child is not a vessel to be filled, but a lamp to be lit”. It is time to say farewell but where ever you go, we will still be able to see your light and feel your warmth from afar - because that is the way stars work. You all have your own specific brand and that makes you all unique. Your brands are strong because they are based on character strengths. Continue to work on and grow your brands, your teams and your relationships. nMrs n  Bev Carlse and Mr Dave Ernstzen Uplands Preparatory School - Class news
