We've heard the question "why aren’t there more black male models on the runways?" and we point the finger of blame at the designers but guess what? I point it back at the Black Male Model too! In the recent months I've learned that black male models, especially in the South, do not take the time to do their homework about the modeling industry. They’ve been told for so long that they should model, for the wrong reasons, that when they enter into the business they're clueless. They don't know where they fit or how to even get started. Some will end up taking all kinds of bootleg photos (some in clothes but most without) and then post them proudly on sites like Model Mayhem and Facebook for the world to see. Only to find out later their picture was stolen and used to promote Gay pride in Whooville, TX. But again, that comes from not taking the time to do your homework. Had you done so then you would know that having "good hair" at 4'11 won't cut it as a runway model. The fact that you are bowlegged is irrelevant and having light eyes doesn’t matter if your teeth and skin are jacked up. DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you end up the poster boy for something you didn’t sign up for.
CREATE. There are many meanings to this word but the basic understanding is to PRODUCE, CAUSE, BRING into existence. We give thanks to the creator above for all the blessing that he has bestowed upon us but many people forget that the creator has instilled within us the power to create as well. I often hear the qualms and complaints of those who have forgotten this fact, or maybe never realized it. We have the resources and power to CREATE a life that we desire. We can CREATE opportunities for ourselves and our community. Too often we see that those who fully embrace this power forsake their fellows by focusing all of their energy upon themselves. Remember, we are all children of the creator and a part of the human race. Let’s create a new and better world for ourselves and our future generations. kennyh@kravemagazine.net

Marcus Crawford is a Dallas native who runs the F.O.G. (Favor of God) catering company specializing in delectable foods to tantalize the taste buds. He is an international caterer who draws decorating inspiration from his catering destinations. One in particular has been the color schemes of South Beach Hotels where there use of bold colors against neutral tones create an eye-popping effect, with balance. What made you choose this location: It’s a central location and I love the commerce aspect of it. It still has the elegant 1920’s brick and floors fused with a contemporary touch. Favorite room: The living room is my favorite room. From the living room there is a stupendous view of the downtown area. I get to view the amazing sites and occasionally wave at the passersby as they hurry along their busy day.

Decorating inspiration: Life. Your home should be a reflection of oneself. I chose khaki tones to represent peacefulness and a pop of color to represent those bold approaches to different facets of my life. What do visitors say when they visit your place for the first time: “Wow!” is the response I normally get. They love the staging and that everything has its own little space and doesn’t look out of place. Explain the importance of art in the home: Art ties in the theme and colors of the room. Lincoln Stephens is one of the founding fathers of this radical movement. If you have ever seen the movie Boomerang, you have been introduced to the debonair, smooth advertising executive Marcus Graham. However, at the end of this story Marcus decides to begin a mentoring program for children in the arts. Lincoln Stephens has turned this dream into a reality. He earned a bachelor's in journalism with a focus in strategic communications from University of Missouri-Columbia and master's in entertainment business from Full Sail University. Once he graduated, he worked for several highly esteemed marketing firms as an advertising account management executive. Upon entering into this field Lincoln quickly learned the advertisement industry lacked diversity. Lincoln, along with other colleagues, wanted to add a “lil bit of change” to their professional world. While watching the presidential election in 2008, Stephens and a few friends were ready to make a change. Lincoln quit his job in Chicago and moved back to Dallas to bring his dream to life. Upon returning to Dallas Lincoln began implementing (his now most popular program) the iCR8 boot camp program around the community. Hence the Marcus Graham Project was born and the rest is HIStory…. The mission of MGP is to develop a pipeline of talent in all aspects of the media and creative fields, while providing career exposure and experience particularly to underrepresented professionals and aspirants.

When did you realize you had what it take to become an actor? My family would watch THE FRESH PRINCE and always tell me I act like Will Smith and I should try to be on TV. That was the last thing I ever imagined I would be doing. I have been performing all my life, but it wasn't until high school I actually started to consider it. What is your ethnic background? I'm Trinidadian and Italian. (Black) Your filmography dates back to 2006. You have been in several TV series prior to Single Ladies. Which one did you enjoy the most? Well I consider Single Ladies to be my first TV series. I enjoy the WORKING the most. How did you get the part of Omar on Single Ladies? My manager Peter Kluge called me with an audition while I just happened to be in Atlanta, Georgia for a few months. Single Ladies shoots there. It was for a different character but when I read the pilot script and saw Omar's lines, I called my manager and said I have to read for this part. read for Omar as well. I guess the producers agreed with me. The stars aligned for me. I know you play a gay guy on Single Ladies; you know I have inquiring minds. Are you gay? No. I like the ladies You play the role so well. Do you have any hang ups about playing Omar, because his character is gay? Thank you very much. It is a fun role to play. The show did not focus on Omar being gay at all, so I wanted to do the same thing. I just wanted to make him a kick-ass kid everyone would want to hang out with. With so much gay bashing going on, what do you have to say about it? It is a sad world we live in when we judge people on their sexual preference. Tolerance is one of the hardest things to come by now a day. There was an episode on Single Ladies where you, well Omar kissed his roommate in Val’s store. I have to ask, what was that like? Yes, It was hilarious. Justin Baldoni (also straight) is a friend of mine. We went in and knocked the scene out. I think that shocked people more then I imagined it would. But as an actor that is what you want to do. I am sure every man wants to know….Stacy Dash, is she as stunning in person as she is on the show? Does her beauty make you forget that Omar is suppose to be gay? I'm only Omar when they say "action". I hate to steal their lines but, Stacey Dash "Could get it…all of it". What is a day like on the set with Stacy, Lisa, & Charity? When I see them it always a good day. On set I just let them touch me and look at them in their little outfits... my life is good. But for the most part I keep to myself during the days I'm working. I'm a loner. I really only see everyone on set during my scenes. Is there any of Omar’s characteristics in you? I think so. Omar is a very genuine guy. Underneath all of his jokes he actually really cares for people. What are some other roles that you would love to play? Dash could “getStacey it…all of it ” I recently read somewhere that you could play Leroy Green in The Last Dragon. Why do think you could play that character? Bruce Leroy himself told me. Taimak and I worked together on a film a few years ago. He kept joking saying I could play him if they did a remake. Then I hear they are doing one, funny. Tell RZA hook me up. I was born in Harlem, NY and I have the GLOW. Dexter is one of my favorite shows. How did you enjoy working on that series? That was one of the first jobs I booked in LA. It was a great experience. I was just happy to be working. In hindsight it was an extremely small part but huge for me. Alright, let’s talk fashion. What is Trevor Winfrey’s style? What are you found in on just a day when you are not on the set? My smoking jacket. What would you wear to an award show? Tailored Suits What item is a must have in your wardrobe? Old T-shirts All guys have a favorite brand of shoes, what would we see in your closet? I don't do brands. I wear whatever I like. Never really cared about who made it, that is such a tacky habit to me, tag-checking. And you might find a body in my closet, don't go in there. Now I know I like a man that smells good. What scent are you wearing these days? A friend of mine got me CREED from France. I love it. And now I can't find it anywhere else. I have heard some people say you remind them of the Wayans brothers, what you think of that? I tried to get them to adopt me… but they said they had a waiting list. I think I like Winfrey better then Wayans. When you are seen on the streets, do everyone call you by “Omar” or do you get a few calling you by Travis? The fact that people stop me on the street is still wonderful. It makes everything worth it when someone say, "I love your work", nothing better. Where do you see your career in the next 5 yrs in your career? I hope to be working heavily in film. I am dreaming of the day when I have two films coming out in the same year. That would be a great feeling.

What advice would you give to a young man that is hoping to become an actor? This is a game of luck and confidence. Make sure you stock up before jumping into the shark tank… I mean acting business. What is Prostate Cancer? Prostate cancer is a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in the tissues of the prostate. The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). The prostate gland produces fluid that is one of the components of semen. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin malignancy in men and is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer, except for lung cancer. However, microscopic evidence of prostate cancer is found at autopsy in many if not most men. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated that about 218,890 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the United States during 2007. About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only 1 man in 34 will die of it. A little over 1.8 million men in the United States are survivors of prostate cancer. The PSA test and advances in treatment have led to a 40 percent reduction in prostate cancer deaths since the mid-1990s, and 90 percent of all prostate cancers are now discovered before they spread outside the gland. The survival rate is nearly 100 percent when prostate cancer is detected early, while the tumor is still localized and hasn’t spread. Treatment options and prognosis depend on the stage of the cancer, the Gleason score, and the patient’s age and general health. With greater public awareness, early detection is on the rise and mortality rates are declining. Additionally, new advances in medical technology are enabling cancer patients to return to active and productive lives after their treatment.

DONTE DEAN Originally from Los Angeles, this young and ambitious 33 year old full time model, devoted husband and father of two beautiful daughters (Chloe 9, and Sophee 3) is taking modeling to new heights and taking no prisoners along the way. What are you known for in the fashion industry? I'm known as the hazel eyed guy that moves well in front of the camera. How were you discovered? What age were you? And how do you think you can get more exposure? I was discovered by Samuel Bowie who started his agency at a night club in downtown Dallas. I was 23 and home for the summer from college. I think more exposure will come now that I am in the industry full time. For years I was employed with a full time job and modeling on the side.

Whats's the best advice you could give to an aspiring model? Always be prepared. There are always way to improve and better yourself. Continue to work hard even when you hear no’s because you will. What was your first gig? My first modeling job was with Fubu and I remember we were shooting in downtown Dallas. I was so nervous there had to be 50 people just standing around watching us while we worked. It was an amazing experience. What photogs have you worked with? One of my favorite photographers that I have worked with thus far in my modeling career would have to be Calvin Brockington, who is based in Dallas with an amazing eye. What is the most attractive trait to have to be a professional model and why is it important? The most attractive trait in my opinion is a distinct face combined with positive attitude. I feel these traits are important because it sets you apart from other models in the industry while making the experience of working with you a pleasant and enjoyable one. Why is there a lack of color on the runway? The lack of color on the runway stems from several factors in my opinion. You have the industry standard of only 10% of models in a show are required to be African American (AA). However, I feel that it is even more complex than that. It boils down to education and opportunity, in which many AA males are not taking advantage of or was not exposed to. These factors lower self worth, and cause most AA males to look for affirmation from their environment. From there, they are incarcerated, dead or they simply have no confidence in their ability to rise above their current situation. What does the fashion world need most? I feel that the fashion industry needs more diverse luxury brands which will increase every area of the industry, ranging from trends to style, to pricing.
Who are some models right now that we should look out for? One model on the rise to me is Sacha M'Baye who shot a Burberry campaign, Rob Evans who shot a really cool Calvin Klein ad, and Sean O’Pry who has been one of the top male models for years. You're married and a father of 2 girls. How do managed the family and modeling? I manage my time with my family and modeling by taking advantage of any time I am able to spend with them. Which designer would you like to walk for most and why? Prada hands down, which is my favorite designer. Is there a particular client that you are always happy to work with? Bryn’t Bry'Nt is an up-and-coming HipHop artist and actor who began his career in the modeling world. Although his passion for music and acting have consumed his life; there is nothing like coming back home to his roots....modeling. He has had the opportunity to work with the world-famous photographer, Francois Rousseau, on some of his personal projects, as well as in one of his latest photography book's "Atelier." Tyrone Betters Tyrone Betters was born in Dallas, Texas on March 29th 1990. He moved to Georgia in his my senior year of has been there ever since. He is currently a senior at Georgia Southern University majoring in business management with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship. He recently became a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Tyrone states “I fell in love with modeling in my freshman year.” He is currently signed with Legacy Model Management out of New York. “I just want to do the best to become successful and when I reach my best, I want to make it better. KRAVE has given me the opportunity to meet and talk to the people that have really helped in the growth of my knowledge in this industry” he says. keith carlos THE WINNER Keith Carlos was born December 19, 1987 and is a Bridgeport, Connecticut native. He has two sisters and five brothers of which Keith has had to overcome some difficult family situations, and has had to basically grow up over night. Keith attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana on a full athletic scholarship for college football. He strives for scholastics achievement; he was inducted into the Golden Key Honor Society and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He also was a 2011 NFL draftee signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent. His major in college is Organizational Leadership and Supervision. Keith has also ventured into modeling and acting while playing football at the University. He is proudest of the fact that he is the first in his family to go to college and get a college degree from Purdue University. Keith has also achieved being a star college football player in the Big 10 Football Conference.

At KRAVE, we always strive to bring new and undiscovered talent to our readers. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a young designer new to the Men’s accessory market. Dallas based Marcus Clark is hitting the fashion scene with a new line of men’s pocket squares full of color and innovation in styling and technique. Inspired by fashion from the 1920’s and 1930’s where men gave more time and attention to their attire on a daily basis, Marcus is looking to revitalize that spirit in men today. Pocket squares are such a niche market to start in but Marcus has his reasons, here he explains the origin of the line; “I wanted to start with an item that I thought was overlooked. I wanted to start with pocket squares because most men, they don’t really know the versatility that it has or what it can actually do to their wardrobe. Whether it’s with a tie or without at tie, or with a bowtie I like to really bring out their style and where they are at their level of fashion.” The pocket squares are made from a variety of fabrics ranging from silk to satin to jacquard and crepe. They are all handmade, so no two are exactly alike. As he expands, Marcus would like to find a manufacturer to help keep up with the demand he already has in the market. Experience in retail and tailoring since the age of 18 and an appreciation for the fashions of Steve Harvey, Calvin Klein, and Sean John; has prepared Marcus Clark to make his mark on the fashion map. With a slogan like “Not Your Grandpa’s Hanky” I’m sure he will be catching the eye of fashion forward men looking to add something special to their wardrobe with something as simple as a pocket square.

Built around a modified bird of paradise print it is a collection that is focused on ease but still has a load of swagger behind it. SHAVING 101: PREPARATION SHAVING FOAM If you don't have such heavy growth and your hair is rather soft, shaving foam is a good alternative for you. Apply generously and let it sit for a few minutes before beginning to shave so the hair will be softened even further. SHAVING GEL Shaving gel is most appropriate for normal to heavy growth. It has a thicker consistency and is oilier than shaving foam. Distribute the shaving gel into both hands and apply a thin layer and let it sit for a couple minutes. SHAVING OIL Correctly used, shaving oil gives the best and closest shave. The oil is very thick and only a few drops are needed to soften the hair. Apply the oil on already wet hair and begin shaving immediately.

Some people are just plain lucky. All they need to do is walk and they wind up with defined calves. They are the fortunate few who have a tendency for white (fast-twitch) muscle fibers that allow for greater growth. The rest of us measly mortals have calf muscles which consist of red (slowtwitch) muscle fibers - the kind that won't grow simply because they aren't designed for strength, they're designed for endurance. It's been my experience that calves respond best when worked quickly. I don't necessarily mean that the reps should be performed quickly, but the total reps should be condensed into as short a time as possible.
TRY THIS: Pick one calf exercise (I prefer the standing calf raise). Your goal will be to reach 75 reps. Use a weight that you would normally choose for a twenty-rep set. Complete the 20 reps and continue until you can't do another rep. Rest just long enough for the burning to subside and continue with as many reps as possible, even if it's only 5 reps. Continue in this fashion until you reach the target goal of 75.

JAY-Z & KANYE WEST: WATCH THE THRONE Not being a big Jay Z fan and a luke warm Kanye fan at best, I wanted to hate on this album and call it over hyped, rated, etc. But before I spoke, I gave it a listen and to my surprise I've ended up liking it to the point of running through, start to end 3 times in a row. The album has a cohesive sound from the production and lyrics and a cohesive emotion throughout it. Some may not like the emotion/content (maybe a little too much bragging coupled with "poor celebrity me"), which is why I can only go to 4 stars, but overall, the album holds it's own. This isn't ground breaking stuff like OutKast but it is good for what it is... two of the more popular non-southern rappers coming together for an album. It's also an album where listening from start to end gives the best experience and after a few rotations, skipping tracks would be appropriate. But to get the ALBUM, you have to listen to it in order and in full. No one song is that smash single or iTunes download monster here...it's all about entirety of the project.
