2012: A YEAR OF SCULPTURE 2012 is a year of sculpture at the Krasl Art Center. exciting exhibitions, captivating lectures and engaging classes highlighting sculpture and three-dimensional design are offered throughout the year. As part of these events, you may have noticed several new sculptures on the art center’s grounds and throughout the community. One sculpture appeared last summer in preparation for the year to come: Krasl Stack by artist Fred Spaulding of Arlington, Texas. The artwork is made of several ceramic blocks featuring screen printed images of digital media; these are bound together with steel bands and further stabilized by their own weight. When building the stack, Fred enlisted the help of teens from the KAC’s 2011 Teen Summer Studio to put the artwork together. Despite their fears that the sculpture might topple, the brave teens had a blast assembling the stack outdoors which has remained successfully intact. Recently, Fred re-visited the KAC, reconfigured the sculpture and re-titled it Krasl Stack II. This time, as part of the process, Fred mined the KAC’s ceramic studios for abandoned pottery projects and ceramic vessels that he added to the stack. Take a look for yourself and notice how the work has changed.
