Well the end of the year has finally come. After all of the stress, late-night cramming sessions, sleepless nights, drama, procrastination, anxiety, and self-doubt, we all have conquered another year here at Hampton High. For some, the ending of this school year will mark another high-school milestone, while for others a new beginning will be opening up. To celebrate this 2012-2013 journey, the Krabba Highlights staff members decided to stray away from the usual KH content to offer reflections on some of their most personally significant memories from this year. In this finale issue of KH, you’ll be able to read some personal anecdotes about what this school year has meant for each of our staff members. So while making your way through our “Storybook”, take the opportunity to reflect on and recall some of your most valued moments from this past year. In closing, I want to say thank you to those who responded positively to the new Krabba Highlights this year. The staff has worked tremendously hard to offer entertaining and thoughtful content in a professional manner. With this being my last year as the newsmagazine’s Editor-in-Chief, I’m excited to see where KH will be taken in the future. Amirio Freeman KH Editor-in-Chief

It seems as if the school year has just been going on endlessly. It has taken so long to finally arrive at May and with merely weeks left to wish the seniors well, now is as good as any time to reflect on and recall our most favorite moments of the year. I would say mine has been when I was with the Hampton High School Keyettes. This was my first year and I was a little hesitant to join, but now I'm happy I didn't change my mind at the last minute. We did so much together. We did a lot at the beginning of the year, like ringing bells for the Salvation Army and wrapping gifts at Barnes and Noble. We also made boxes around Thanksgiving for people unable to provide a substantial meal for their families. Around Winter Break we had a party where we exchanged gifts and ate food that we all brought. During second semester we weren't as busy, but we did a few things: we sold candy grams for Valentine's Day and we then participated in the “Pasta for Pennies fundraiser, where we earned spaghetti for our hard work. We had a busy year and we only have a few more events left until the year is over. With less than one month left, there is only so much we can do. Also being added to my memory book is my time spent with the JV soccer girls. I had no

plans to be in anything that required me to stay after school, but I decided to stay after one afternoon to see what I would need to do in order to be the manager of the team. It wasn't anything strenuous and everybody seemed nice enough. I stayed and really enjoyed my time with the girls and the other manager. Being in a situation where I didn't know many people, I made a lot of new friends and became more outspoken. Not only did I earn more extracurriculars, but I also met a lot of different people I wouldn't have talked to otherwise. This year, I feel very accomplished in the sense that people actually know I can talk. I've always been the girl sitting in the back that nobody talked to, but I allowed myself to expand beyond my normal crowd this year. I find myself able to talk to anyone without being terribly stricken with the fear of sounding strange to someone. I feel like I also helped more people this year. Usually I don't volunteer much, but I signed up for a lot of things and even helped people in my classes. I think I can consider this a very successful year and I hope everybody else feels the same way about their experience this year.

My best school memory from this year was when my team played Phoebus High School’s varsity softball team and won. On May 14th, my team and I had to play a game against Phoebus, our last game of the season. To go to districts we had to beat them and we did! When we first started, Cali Morgan, our shortstop, was up to bat and she kept fouling the ball out. She eventually struck out and Amber Wallace, our team’s pitcher, was up next. She hit the ball towards second base, but Phoebus’ second baseman got her out before she could reach first base. During the first inning, Phoebus made a lot of small mistakes. After Amber hit, Allyson Hux, our third baseman, went up to bat, yet the opposing team struck her out. Hampton then had to take the field due to earning three outs. When Phoebus’ first batter made a hi, the came towards me. I had to use good judgment to catch the incoming ball. As it came down, I caught it in my glove and then made a double play at

second. After we got that, we had to earn one more out. That is when the next batter hit the baseball into the outfield and got a triple. Following that, everyone was encouraging each other with phrases like “We got this” and “You got it babe”. Eventually we got the out and went to the dugout to get some hits. We made a lot of runs in the second and third innings. I was so excited to play against Phoebus because I came from and used to play for that school. The fact that my team beat them was great. The score at the end of the game was 11-1, with Hampton being the winning team. My teammates were so happy because that meant that we would go to districts and play Warwick. Even though we did make a few errors during the game, we still kept our heads up and succeeded.

The best memory of my senior year has to be Prom! It was my second Prom, but this one was my own so I had way more fun. It was something I will remember for the rest of my life and I will probably tell my kids about it. One of my many reasons for why I had fun is because I was with my beautiful girlfriend Nicole. When I first woke up on the morning of Prom, I was as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. I first had to go check into my hotel room, which was at the Hilton right across from BJ’s. I ran into a little problem because I did not know that you had to be twenty-one to check into a hotel room. I had to call my dad to come and HHS Student

check me in. After I hit that small bump, I went back and took a nap because I knew I had a long night ahead of me . After I woke up, I showered and began to get dressed . It took about thirty minutes to get ready . When I was finally done, I went to go pick up my lovely date, Nicole. It took her like seven years to get ready . I really do not know why she took so long. Yet when she was finished, we took about five thousand million pictures.

My best memory at Hampton High School this year was Prom 2013. It all started around the beginning of March when I went online and started looking for Prom dresses. I had my heart set on this one perfect purple dress, but the website selling the dress raised the dress’ price. So I began looking at another dress. I soon found one that was pearl pink that I wanted, but when I went to order it the website turned out to be fake. From then on all hope was gone and I didn't know whether to just give up or keep searching. So I spoke to my sister and she told me that my high-school Prom was something that I shouldn't miss and that she would help me find my dress. So I went back on the hunt for this perfect dress. A certain website caught my attention and offered a lot of dresses, but most of them were not in the price range that my grandma was looking in. So I finally found this nice blue tutu dress that I wanted, and and my grandfather agreed to buy it for me. The dress came out to be around $300, and when it came I was so anxious to put it on. But I didn’t until two weeks before Prom when I got it altered.

Prom week was so exciting. I had my hair appointment set, my nail appointment in place-everything was going well. On the Thursday before the big night, I went and got my nails done, and the day following I left school early and went immediately to get my hair done. The hair dresser was running behind schedule and there were two more people in front of me. Around five, the beautification started and lasted until around eight. Afterwards, it was time to shower, get dressed, do my makeup, and pick up my date. Running late, I was so worried because all I could think about was the fact that Prom had started already. I quickly got dressed and my oldest sister came down from New York and did my makeup. Even with time issues, everything was going the way I wanted. After I finished getting dressed, I took photos with my family, and then I was off to pick up my date, Nathan Watts. When I reached his house, I went inside, met his family, and Nathan and I put on our corsages and went off to Prom. We danced, took pictures, and laughed. We had a blast!

With high school, there are a lot of things to remember: how it was when you first got to school, who dated who, and other things. Personally, I thought I did not have any memories that stood out, but I realize that I have so many memories, like the time I fell frontwards while walking up the stairs. Luckily no one saw me, but the event is still considered horrible by me. There was also the time I was texting two people: my best friend and someone that I liked. HHS Student

While texting, I didn’t pay attention, and I somehow ended up sending the text meant for my friend to my crush, and the one for my crush to my friend. The situation was hilarious. Out of all my memories I really believe this is the best because it is one that I can look back on and laugh at. I truly believe that high-school memories are meant to be happy and sometimes humorous.

My best memories include my crazy classes and weird conversations held in them, coming into Ms. Gonzalez’s room and having her play my favorite songs to start my day off right, and making jokes in my webpage class. There was also the D.C. trip. It was fun, but the end was filled with unnecessary drama. Additionally, I liked the fact that I was assigned the coolest teachers that didn’t stress out about certain things and who would balance between being casual and professional. I like classes with flexibility. Having biology with different grade levels was fun too; being in a class with people maturing

at different rates can be a fun experience. Along with having a good time in school, I had fun outside of school too, especially with my best friend. The best thing I learned how to do this school year was how to deal and work with stress. Sometimes it’s easy for me to relieve stress by taking it out on other people. Overall, I'm ending this year on good terms with my teachers and the people that I hang out with.

Reflecting back on my junior year, there are so many great memories I will always cherish. But my favorite one by far will always be attending Prom at the Hampton Convention Center on May 10th with my best friend Tyler Minks. It was such a privilege to be asked and to be a part of this senior event as a junior. Tyler and I went with a black-and-white, 1930s-inspired look. It was really fun to dress up and we received a good response from people. We entered in a white cadillac with Mozart playing. It was funny and classy all at once. The love was so real and everyone looked so beautiful. Everything from the decorations to the food to the DJ were well put-together. The music was good and I knew pretty much all of the songs. You could dance as crazy as you wanted and no one judged you--Prom was a real big party.

Even the teachers were being cool and were just so happy to see everyone. It was loads of fun! Just seeing everyone with smiles and wanting to take pictures filled me with joy. So many photos were taken. It was amazing. Everybody really looked like royalty. There were no bad vibes at all. I loved every moment. The After Prom was also fun. There was laser tag, free food, an obstacle course, and a hangout spot for relaxation and talking. My favorite thing there was the free food, of course. Following After Prom, everyone went their separate ways. The fact that there were so many friends in one place made it such a fun night. The seniors were all very welcoming. I am really going to miss them all.

My best high-school memory was when myself and my basketball team won a state title. The great thing about that situation was that we were able to go so far and we won games that others did not believe we would win. Behind the scenes we fought, yet we still worked hard and remained a family. Overall, I was so excited to win a state championship because Hampton High had not won one in a while. Even when some players were

injured, everyone on the team stepped up in order to win and succeed. Also, during the journey that lead to our most prominent victory, my coach always told me to keep a good head and to stay on the right path to avoid those who would try to bring me down. I’ll never forget his advice to me.

Rickey Rogers

My best memory this year was the Hampton vs Denbigh rugby game. It was the second round of the playoffs, and it was a situation where one could either win or go home. Last year, my team and I eliminated Denbigh, and this year they wanted revenge. The game started with us kicking Denbigh the ball. It was a quick turnover, but we got the ball back. We marched into their 22. The ball was passed to me and I scored. However, it got called back due to a knock-on. We eventually scored, made the conversion, and went to halftime with a 7-0 lead. When the second half began, Denbigh kicked us the ball. They eventually got the ball back and scored. But they missed the conversion, causing the score to be 7-5, with the Hampton Heat leading. We kicked them the ball and they turned it over to us. We scored on that drive and made the conversion to give Hampton a 14-5 lead. Things soon took a turn for the worse when we turned the ball over and they scored. Denbigh also made the conversion, giving us a small twopoint lead. They had marched down the field and came into our goal line with two minutes left in the HHS Student

game. They were given a penalty kick that would have given them a one-point lead with one minute left in the game, but they missed it! We had the ball when the game’s time was about to run out. A pass went wrong and Denbigh’s fastest player caught the ball. Denbigh’s sideline went wild thinking they had won the game. So I immediately took off running with a great pursuit angle on the quick Denbigh player. I tackled him 10 meters from the try line. Then someone else from his team picked the ball up and ran, but then another tackle was made and the player was pushed out of bounds. The whistle blew when time expired, and the whole Hampton Heat team stormed onto the field! As we lined up to shake hands with the biggest grins on our face, the Denbigh players were crying their eyes out! The Hampton Heat advanced to the next round due to my game-saving tackle.

My best memories here at Hampton High include the pep rallies, the Homecoming dances, Ring Dance, and all of the extracurricular activities. One of my best memories is being a part of the school’s newsmagazine, Krabba Highlights. It has been amazing. I have learned different things in each of the magazine’s sections. I will also not forget the people who warmly welcomed me into this school during my freshman year. They were all really nice, calm, and

My memory occurred earlier in the year, about a week before Homecoming. I never really went to a dance in my entire life, so the Homecoming Dance became my first. I asked a girl named Brittany to the event and she said yes. That was honestly the last word I was expecting. The dance itself wasn't really great, but after it I took Brittany’s hand and asked her to be my girlfriend. She said yes with a kiss. That was one memory I will never forget.
