By Mark Adams Have you seen the commercials that are running (seemingly endlessly) for something called "Christian Mingle?" They look like they should be exclusive to reruns of something like "Touched By An Angel" or "Highway to Heaven." Fortunately, this is why they invented YouTube, so people with good senses of humor like Cheyenne Jackson and David Burtka can put something as vomit-inspiring as this into its proper perspective. It's not up on YouTube as yet, but go to www.funnyordie. com and search for "gay Christian mingle, and laugh away. Below: Gay Christian Mingle Parody by Cheyenne Jackson and David Burtka

Our Heros LGBT FIREFIGHTERS

Openly gay Firefighter, Paramedic; Brett Dunckel

14 savoirflairmagazine

By Flavia Francesquini Suppose you are trapped on the 10th floor of a burning building. You begin to lose hope as the smoke starts to burn your eyes and lungs. Suddenly, you see the helping arms of a firefighter; someone has come to your rescue! This person has risked his or her own life to save yours. Before you accept the safety offered by this brave hero, do you take the time to ask if he or she is straight or gay? Any sane person would consider this to be a ridiculous question. Sadly, many people who would accept help in an emergency would not hesitate, in less dramatic circumstances, to taunt members of the LGBT community. Many of us have had to develop “invisibility” skills to perform our jobs. Although we have worked within every profession for centuries, we have not always been allowed to “be ourselves.” It amazes me that, in 2013, issues surrounding sexual orientation in the work force remain. Those who believe that DADT(Don’t Ask Don’t Tell) ended our nightmares have not taken a realistic look around. Discrimination in the workplace is alive and well; hundreds of current lawsuits clearly illustrate that a lot of ground must be gained before we can rest. But there is also hope. The experiences of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community service professionals can differ dramatically. Sometimes, geography plays a role on how well or poorly we are received in the mainstream. Often, we are surprised by the kindness we find in certain areas. As we hope others will keep open minds when hearing our stories, it’s good to know that it happens, perhaps, more often than it is expected. While it’s true that being out is not always easy - and it can be particularly difficult for those in the public service - there are also a lot of supporters trying to balance things out. In 1991, an officer of the Northampton, MA Police Department, and three other police officers started the Gay Officer’s Action League (G.O.A.L.) for

He has been a firefighter for 14 years, and coming out took courage and a good sense of humor. “There is a broad mix of people and politics in town, but I knew that the Fire Department itself is a pretty conservative institution, so I was very careful with what I said and how I acted; I was convinced that my career would end if word got out that I was gay.” In fact, Dunckel was so sure

Bling! Your Own Fabulous Jewelry Designed For You

by Mr. McCarty Many gay men and lesbians believe that only a professional can design beautiful jewelry. Our expert shows you how to contribute to your own meaningful engagement, wedding, or gift jewelry. I have always recommended that fans of fine jewelry co-design their own pieces - unless, a la Liz Taylor, they have millions to spend on auctioned estate pieces and stones - and that’s fabulous too! Designing your own jewelry is always fun - enjoy the journey! Here are some suggestions:

18 savoirflairmagazine

First the stones...You’ll want to utilize reputable GIA certified professionals (Gemological Institute of America which protect all buyers and sellers of gemstones by setting and maintaining the standards used to evaluate gemstone quality). If you are choosing beautiful large stones, have them certified and insured. As with settings, stone selection is all about personal taste! Many jewelry neophytes don’t know that most precious stones come in a rainbow of colors; for instance sapphires are available in pink, yellow, and even purple. I knew a woman who had her wedding ring done in amethyst - a non-traditional choice, but it was her ring. Make sure you get what you want! When choosing stones or rings there are a multitude of options and considerations: budget will determine

They were created for two women recently married who wanted matching14 karat white gold diamond rings in a contemporary design with a surprise ruby on the side. We met and discussed ideas, and decided on a final design. They were thrilled with the results and have recommended me to other friends who are getting married. My inspiration comes from engaging the clients in conversation. We talk about a million things, and it helps me with ideas for sketches which I do while we talk. I consider these concept sketches. The final drawing is a CAD or computer-aided design which is the point of departure for the finished piece.”

Story of a ring named Edwin by Cynthia Britt This elegant and refined wedding band by Cynthia Britt was designed and custom made for Edwin. Edwin who has slender fingers, wanted a band that is not too wide, yet wide enough to make a statement. He also wanted his wedding ring to be set with one princess cut Tanzanite, showing his heritage tp incorporating a unique design around the stone and on the band that would be complementary to his hand structure and style. As with all custom made pieces from Cynthia Britt, a few designs were initially sketched, according to customer‘s hand structure and needs. The chosen design was first made in wax, then cast in customer’s desired metal, in this case, 14k white gold. The result is the elegant “Edwin” wedding ring! A 6.5mm wide band with one 0.25 carat princess cut Tanzanite, bezel set in the middle and adorned with a unique design suitable for his style. Named after its owner ‘Edwin’ is a wedding band that is unique as it is elegant.

Delicate Lace Ring By 4 Corners | Brian Nilson Made for a customer who wanted a piece that could be worn everyday yet still had a delicate look to it. We have come to call it simply “lace ring” since the design and others similar to it have been popular in our shop. The piece in the picture started with our own alloy (a strong 16k yellow gold) and hand carved the ring out of the metal. A cast ring would not have the strength of a ring that was carved from a solid sheet and this ring was to be worn everyday. First all the gems were set and then any gold not needed in the design was cut away with gravers, saws, drill bits, and tools. We developed a polish for the hard to reach areas. In the end we have a piece that shows off the gems in a light yet sturdy frame work of lacy gold. Made with 16 karat yellow gold, diamonds garnets

Crossing Tides custom ring By Fairbank and Perry Goldsmiths This is a ring that was made for a father, who was so impressed with the wedding bands we made for his son and son-in-law, that he wanted to design a new ring of his own. We took the diamonds and some yellow gold from another beloved but worn-out famly ring, and added them to a new design, incorporating the flowing sculptural elements he loved with a new ruby and rose gold accents. The result was fresh, colorful and symbolic of intertwined lives. Created with 18 karat white, rose and yellow gold, ruby and diamonds, hand-carved, cast and fabricated.

Wedding set reborn by North Country Fair Jewelers This ring was created using a customer’s gold from her wedding set. She has been married for quite some time, but was really into the idea of creating something a little more modern. So, I used all of her gold from her original set, incorporated into her new ring. The piece ended up being her dream ring. I absolutely love doing these types of things for bridal jewelry. Jewelry is really all about feelings. I love reusing sentimental pieces for people, and creating their perfect piece, while still having the history of the original piece. Sustainable Living: Fall, Winter, Spring + Summer

By Ben Barkan, Founder of HomeHarvest Growing your own food is healthy and fun. With climate change and the future of global food security in question, a new wave of interest in self-sufficiency is emerging. Their goal is to reconnect customers with the food they eat and the first step lies in preparing the soil. Here in New England, a huge variety of produce can be harvested and Massachusetts has some of the most fertile soil in the world. Deb and Sue are clients of HomeHarvest and tend chickens, bees and a beautiful vegetable garden. “I just love coming out and eating straight from the garden. I look forward to it every day. Right now we’ve got blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, broccoli, zucchini, tomatoes, greens and herbs. It’s amazing how much we can grow and harvest in our small backyard. We also have five hens and enjoy collecting their delicious eggs every day. The excess greens we grow help to feed them, and their manure gets composted and fertilizes our garden. We think the berries and vegetables from the garden taste better than anything we can buy in a store.”

32 savoirflairmagazine

“Having this garden really makes us appreciate the seasons, too. It is fun to watch the flowers and veggies grow. They are beautiful, and they provide food about eight months of the year!” Eric and Jordan wanted to grow more of their own food and decided to use their front yard. It’s possible to create edible gardens with abundant yields that also look great. By incorporating flowers, stonework or sculptures, you can customize and harmonize its gardens with the surrounding landscape. “We start harvesting in April and enjoy the harvest through November. Last Thanksgiving we were eating our own potatoes, sweet potatoes, kale, onions, micro greens, herbs, and even beans and tomatoes that we preserved. Our garden isn’t that big so we really try to maximize the space. During the season our garden provides all our veggie needs and our favorite part is the compliments we get from our neighbors. A front yard doesn’t have to be about lawns, pesticides and herbicides. A front yard can be about growing our own organic food.” Interested in starting your own garden? The first step is to test the soil where you want to grow. Testing is an easy $10 process and provides some crucial information. Lead is a common occurrence in soil, derived from paint and gas used many years ago. After a suitable garden location is chosen, testing for lead should be one of the first steps. Take 12-15 subsamples from a depth of eight inches in the area where you want to plant. Mix the subsamples and send one large handful to a local lab. We suggest using the UMASS soil-testing lab. http://soiltest.umass.edu The amount of lead in the soil should dictate how to prepare the garden. The more contaminated the soil, the more quality compost should be added. A layered heavy-duty liner may be necessary in extreme cases. continues on next page

In terms of nutrients, the addition of quality, aged compost, and organic fertilizer is often all it takes to grow abundant organic produce. Crop diversity is a crucial aspect of sustainable agriculture and, when designing your garden, it’s important to mimic nature’s patterns whenever possible. This time of year, autumn, soil testing, liming, composting and planning are great activities to prepare for spring. If your garden is already established, you can plant greens, herbs and garlic.

Behind Closed Doors Incredible Bedroom Designs to Fit the Unique You

by Candice Pardue Let’s face it. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping. And where do we sleep - the bedroom! But too often, little attention is given to bedroom designs. The bedroom should be decorated in such a way to create a peaceful setting as we retire, but should be decorative enough so we can welcome guests for a tour when the opportunity arises.

36 savoirflairmagazine

Think for a moment. Does your bedroom provide the comfort you need to settle down for a restful night? Is your personality expressed through your bedroom decor? Do you want a bedroom design that’s far from the ordinary? Let’s explore some amazing bedroom designs to find the right one for you. Serene Green Green walls for bedroom decor welcome complementary colors of tan, brown, black, and even brighter colors such as pink, red, or yellow. With light green walls, you can easily add dark accented bedroom furniture and wall decor pieces with natural-colored bed linens. Use wooden or glass night stands, decorative mirrors, light-colored lamps, and large windows to bring out the blend of colors. For carpet, choose neutral tan or dark brown so you can change your bedroom look and feel occasionally without replacing the carpet. Use rugs to accent hardwood flooring or neutral carpet. continues on next page Conservator Of Fine Furniture For Over 50 years 25-Y Washington Ave., Natick • yeskofurniturerestoration.com We travel anywhere in NE for our LGBT customers

Behind Closed Doors; Bath Making the Smallest Room in the House the Most Stylish One The bathroom and kitchen are the most important rooms in the house. Ask any realtor, and he or she will tell you that these two rooms are the ones that sell houses. That’s why it’s important to pay particular attention when remodeling your bathroom, especially if you plan on selling your home in the not too distant future. Unlike other rooms in the house, there’s no blank slate when it comes to the bathroom. Anyone taking over your home will have to live with the bathroom suite and other permanent fixtures in the room, unless he or she is prepared to spend time and money remodeling it, and few people welcome the prospect of that when buying a house. But it’s not just prospective buyers you should consider when remodeling your bathroom. It may be the smallest room in the home, but for many people the bathroom is the one room to which they feel they can escape; the one room to which they can retreat, lock the door, and remain undisturbed. continues on page 42

Stylish Bathrooms continued from page 40

Most people will have a vision of their ideal bathroom before remodeling, which is a great place to start. For some, it requires a complete overhaul, ripping out the old and installing a new suite, bathroom cabinets, and fixtures. For others, it’s merely a simple case of having to retile and repainting the walls. But whatever your remodeling job involves, do your research beforehand. That means gathering as many ideas as you think you can handle and then taking it from there. What you plan to do with your property within the next five years or so could also have a bearing on how you remodel your bathroom. If you intend selling your home in the near future, you may want to stick to a look that will appeal to as wide an audience as possible – a classic and simple makeover that doesn’t have too individual a look. That doesn’t mean that your makeover has to be devoid of any personality whatsoever; it’s still possible to continues on page 64

Rides that fit our lifestyle Hybrids and Electric Vehicles by Louis Chavez Our trend-setting community is consistently at the forefront of adopting new styles and ideas, and this includes automobiles. The vanguard trend is gas / electric hybrids and electric vehicles. Most automakers are now manufacturing hybrids, of which there are two types: one that uses the gas engine to charge the battery, and a plug- in model. 100% electric vehicles (EVs) are beginning to appear in the major auto brand lineups, due to government mandates that require adherence to new fuel and emissions requirements. The following list presents cars that are a stylish fit for a broad spectrum of drivers, including small business owners, couples with a few children, and young professionals. We based our ratings on a variety of sources, including published performance reviews, conversations with friends and associates, and our own opinions regarding appearance - after all we can be stylish, even when it comes to cars!

Testla Model S Tesla Motors is in a class of its own, and has established the gold standard for electric vehicles. Named after the electrical genius Nikola Tesla, this company manufactures vehicles that can travel an amazing 200+ miles on a single charge. The most recent addition to the Company’s product line is the Model S, which will have heads turning as you drive down Commercial Street in Provincetown on a crowded summer day. Features include great acceleration, agile handling, comfort, and style. The Model S has a more conventional sports-car look, in contrast to the futuristic appearance of the original Roadster. Prices run from $57,400 to $105,400, based on engine horsepower (hp), which ranges from 362 to 416. You always get what you pay for - and this beauty proves it!

Toyota’s Prius V Toyota succeeds by combining the benefits of

a station wagon with

those of a hybrid. Great for antiquing, kids, dogs, and shopping, this larger Prius accommodates without compromise, as it offers both a roomy rear seat and a large cargo area. Great mileage (41 mpg) and a sleek look make this model something to seriously consider. Prices run from $26,650 to $30,295.

Subaru XV Crosstrek™ Hybrid Subaru is one of our community’s favorite car brands; its first hybrid offers Subaru’s renowned control and balance handling. It is an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle [1], which makes it the most fuel-efficient, lowest-emission AWD hybrid crossover in America; it achieves an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city, and 34 on the highway. Its standard all-wheel drive is ideal for New England winters. In addition, the sleek, aerodynamic vehicle is available in some unique colors (e.g., lime green). The base price is an appealing $22,790.

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Buyers of this plug-in hybrid will enjoy the same interior space as the popular conventional gasfueled model, the Outlander; it is perfect for camping or antiquing, with space to spare. The model has three drive modes that are engaged automatically: pure EV, series hybrid, and parallel hybrid. Electric-only operation is up to 34 miles at a speed of 75 mph, and charging the battery takes only four hours with a 240-volt outlet. MPG is up to 143 mpg (depending on mode). Assertive styling and ease-of-handling make this vehicle a solid pick. Base cost is $41,000. savoirflairmagazine 45

Rides that fit our lifestyle Nissan Leaf Cute and compact, this is the first battery-electric car to be built and sold in volume by a major automaker. This five-door hatchback is a great little car to park for some shopping around town or at a mall. It’s a quick and agile ride that offers a heated seat and steering wheel. With careful driving, the leaf can reach a 75 mile range on a single charge with 129 city/102 highway mpg. The price tag for the new S Model without incentives now runs below $30,000, which makes it a good second car, and one that

The Chevrolet Volt

is also ideal for suburban commuters.

An impressive American-made vehicle, the Volt has responsible, agile handling and a quiet ride. With its combined gas and electric system, you can cruise to Miami’s White Party without the dread range anxiety of most EVs; it can get 35 miles on its electric motor, with 380 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas. Those who do mostly urban and commuter driving may only stop for gasoline once a month. (The drawback for many city dwellers may be the need to plug into an outlet every night). The photo above doesn’t do the styling justice; the vehicle is sleek with panache and plenty of nice exterior detail - even the Volt logo has some flair! (Of course, it is still burdened with the awful, antiqued Chevy logo.) Prices start at $39,645.

Do you like the idea of driving an electric car because it is better for the planet but do not have the funds to make your dream car a reality? You can still do your part to be as earthfriendly as possible by utilizing eco-conscious apps for all of your driving tasks. The following are just a few eco-conscious driving apps you can consider.

Eco-Drive

Available from Orion Lukasz Gonerski, this fun app helps you to focus on driving in a fuel-efficient manner. Once this app is downloaded to your iOS device, you simply do your best to avoid braking too forcefully or accelerating too rapidly. This app displays a virtual glass full of water on your smartphone screen and each time your driving habits cause you to spill virtual water, you lose points. The softer your stops and starts are, the better your score. While this app will not make your current vehicle any more environmentally friendly, it sure can help you to focus on being a more eco-conscious driver. (itunes.apple.com/us/app/id434135008)

Eco Driving

Available from Stroika, this iOS app offers drivers tips to improve their fuel efficiency. By utilizing the tips provided, drivers can reduce their fuel consumption and reduce their CO2 emissions too. This app offers informative tips on everything from efficient speeds for fuel conservation to coasting and gliding tips. From vehicle maintenance tips to driving in the appropriate gear, this app helps users to think about how their driving habits can impact their fuel economy. (itunes.apple.com/us/app/id382787209)

Eco Trip

Available for Android devices, Eco Trip from Rand Graham allows users to track their fuel mileage and then export their data in graph format. Perfect for sharing via social media, these graphs allow users to show off everything from their fuel consumption to their octane levels. While this app will not necessarily save the planet from global warming, it will allow you to show off your environmentally conscious driving habits to your social network. For those with a competitive streak, this app could very well start an eco-friendly driving trend amongst your network of peers. (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rmcore.ecotrip)

Eco Maps

Available from Casey Lewis, this app allows users to plan the most efficient driving routes in order to maximize fuel economy. The app allows users to input data including specific addresses and then offers suggested routes for maximum efficiency. Especially handy for commercial drivers, this app allows you to place pins along your route for each stop you need to make. Pins are colour-coded and can even be arranged according to specific tasks. This app is available for iOS devices (3.1 or later) and results will be impacted by your device type and connection speed. (itunes.apple.com/us/app/id387530572) These are just five of numerous mobile apps you can consider if you want to focus on becoming a more eco-conscious driver. You may not be able to drive a solar powered vehicle or power your car with vegetable oil, but you can definitely make a difference by focusing on your driving habits. Which of these apps do you think will turn you into a green driver this year?

About Us Amy~Lee & Michele

by Photographer Marina Zinovyeva How and when did you meet? Michele: “We met back in 2008, it was a night that is forever stamped in my soul. Because of work I rarely, if ever meet friends out and on this particular evening it was well worth it. It was as if time had stopped, I turned ever so slightly only to do a complete turnaround, as this beautiful woman in white walked in. I know exactly what she was wearing from head to toe and I even remember her haircut! I said to myself after that moment, “I’m going to

marry this woman”, the only catch, she was with someone at the time. We ran into each other randomly over the next year, but it was in 2010 where we ran into each other again and the rest is history! I wasn’t letting her go this time, revealing that exact moment I saw her, and letting her know my plans.....to marry her and to love her forever! 54 savoirflairmagazine

Why did you choose getting married in Bristol and Bristol Harbor inn? We had a seaside wedding in mind and the Bristol Harbor Inn provided all of that and more. Their quality of service and attention to detail were phenomenal. What was the most memorable moment at the wedding? Michele: There wasn’t one moment that wasn’t memorable! But if you are forcing me to choose one, of course it was seeing Amy for the first time.....she was absolutely the most breathtaking bride I had ever seen and she was mine! Amy-Lee: For me it’s a tie between the moment I slipped the ring on Michele’s finger and that feeling of “oh my God, finally she’s my WIFE!” and the end of the night when the last song, “All you Need is Love” 56 savoirflairmagazine

Amy~Lee & Michele from Love Actually, was played, and Michele swept me up in her arms and spun me around in the midst of a circle of our loved ones. Who proposed and how? Michele: I proposed to Amy! I knew there were 3 places in the entire world that Amy loves, her home in Rhode Island, Block Island and New York City. I knew I was not going to do it at her childhood home and my thoughts were sold on NYC, but after being unsuccessful at putting together the helicopter flight over the city, I was bummed and stumped. In a conversation with Amy at dinner one night, we were leaving for Block Island that weekend and I had not ever been. She was talking about how much she loved the island and how amazing her childhood memories were there. That she wished we could get married there but how overly expensive it would be and that is when it clicked in my head‌We may not be able to get married on Block Island, but I can at least propose to her there! So I had no idea how or where I was going to do it, I thought I will just go with the flow and when the feeling is right I will just do it. The funny thing about all of this is for 3 weeks I had this ring, hiding it all over our apartment and sweating over her finding it by accident. Amy kept asking me why I was acting so weird and I kept saying I wasn’t, but I took it to another level when I had a messenger bag glued to me for the first part of our trip. I do not carry bags of any sort and it sparked a curiosity of why all of the sudden I was carrying this and as I put it, I was going onto an island and did know where we would be going and just wanted to have my stuff with me in case we decided to do different things. Not sure what all of that meant, but it worked! continues Below: Exterior of the Bristol Harbor Inn

I ended up asking her the first night we were on Block Island, the day was gorgeous and the night even more so! We were actually at dinner with her parents, the sun was setting and we were on the water, I happened to look over at her mother and mouthed “NOW”! Amy and her father got up to go the restroom and Amy’s mother was like, “Now, now, with us here at this restaurant??” I said absolutely, that I wouldn’t have it any other way, the day was perfect, the night was perfect and we were all together! So the plan was when they came back, Amy’s mom would take the camera and act like she was taking pictures and capture the moment of me asking Amy. Amy and her father came back; I was excited, shaking a bit and the next thing I know I started talking about how much Amy meant to me, I

got down on one knee with the ring box in one hand and asked her! She was completely caught off guard which was so amazing and the whole restaurant started clapping and cheering! The moment was amazing and I honestly cannot tell you all that I said, but all I do know is that it was absolutely perfect in every way! Did you get an engagement ring(s)? If so what does it look like? Traditional? Custom? Etc. Michele: I had a custom ring made with two wedding bands made to compliment the ring. I did not want an engagement ring so Amy bought me the Rolex watch that I had wanted as my engagement gift! The part that was most important to me was the center diamond and so I wanted to make sure that was perfect. The setting itself is custom; it was a mix of what I liked and what Amy wanted. continues

The prongs I had done in a more classic look as well as the overall setting itself. What are your wedding bands like? Michele: You can tell from above the diamond bands I had made to compliment the engagement ring. I did not want to have an engagement ring with bands that did not match! The blue bands, sapphires, are what I had sent over to Amy on our wedding day for “something blue”. They also compliment the ring as well and she can wear each piece how she wants. My ring was Amy’s grandmother’s wedding band, 67years

of marriage in my band! Amy asked her grandmother who was absolutely honored and delighted! And it is a complete honor to have this on my finger. Tell us how you choose your clothing? Dress? Michele: We went simple and classic with my attire, a black Burberry women’s tux jacket, cream pants and a cream shirt, black Prada shoes, diamond earrings, my engagement watch and a pocket square to compliment the colors that Amy chose for our wedding. Amy: I selected a classic, strapless lace dress by Lazaro. I wanted something that was Spiritual, secular, personal wedding ceremonies Boston and New England

Who planned the wedding and how? Michele: After the stress of designing the rings and the proposal, I told Amy I didn’t care what she did for the wedding and thus she planned away! Amy: Michele was great; she just let me run with my laundry list of ideas. I’m the kind of girl who had something in mind from childhood, so the planning, in reality, started years ago haha. Was it difficult to find services for your wedding? Michele and Amy: Not at all! We were legally married in New York City by an acquaintance of ours, a week before our wedding,

Amy and Michele: Not at all! Besides the nerves of making sure everything is in place, people are in place, etc., everything went off perfectly!

What kind of services did you find when planning the wedding? Amy: Honestly, I used a few of the common wedding planning sites and just selected vendors to contact based on reviews. I made sure to enquire about each vendor’s willingness to provide services for a same-sex wedding and fortunately, everyone I spoke with was open and willing.

Besides the both of you who was the most enthusiastic about your upcoming wedding? Amy: It’s hard to say. Our family and friends love a party, so from the moment we got engaged and picked a location everyone was planning excitedly around the weekend. We even had a bunch of family and friends who live in Rhode Island rent hotel rooms for the weekend so that they could enjoy all of the festivities. What kind of reactions did you get when you told your family? Michele: My brother and his wife were excited, my mother was just there. As for our friends and Amy’s family, they were just ecstatic and extremely excited for us. Amy: As Michele mentioned, my mum and dad were there for the proposal, so they were beyond psyched. The extended family was also pretty over the

moon. Everyone loves Michele and again, everyone loves a party haha. Who were some of your family members and friends who came to the ceremony? Amy and Michele: We had a headcount limit of 120 because

of the venue, so we had to limit the invite list to close family and friends. That being said, we had an incredible crowd, filled with everyone we love. Did you go on a honeymoon and where was that? Amy and Michele: Yes we did!

Amy~Lee & Michele We went to South Africa for 2 weeks and it was amazing! What advice would you give to gay couples in Rhode Island who are planning a wedding? Amy: Gay couples should expect and frankly demand the same quality of service as the rest of the population, because a wedding is a wedding. So expect quality.

As well as considering how much longer you intend staying in your home, before embarking on your remodeling project, you should also consider how much you can spend on it, as well as how your bathroom is actually used. For example, you may have a vision of a romantically inspired themed bathroom, but if your bathroom’s main use is for showering by a small army of men, with you being the only woman who uses it, you may need to reconsider your plan. Scented candles and pretty embellished soap dishes may end up being pushed to the back of the bathroom cupboards if they prove impractical and of little use to those using the bathroom on a regular basis. That doesn’t mean that you or anyone else has to sacrifice their dreams of the perfect bathroom, just that a little compromise may need to be had if money, time, and effort aren’t going to be wasted. Plain white is still the number one choice of color for a classic bathroom suite. It gives you as blank a canvass as possible to work with and is the color least likely to offend prospective buyers. How-

Stylish Bathrooms ever, it can sometimes look too cold and clinical for some people’s tastes. If you do intend to sell your property in the not too distant future and want to install a white bathroom suite but want to avoid creating a bland looking bathroom, you can use accents to add personality. Cupboard doors, a bath panel, a shower curtain, as well as towels and items such as soap dishes and toothbrush holders can all help to inject some color and vibrancy to a solid white-colored bathroom. And these are all items that can be easily replaced or removed if and when required. If you decide on a theme for your bathroom, you can still do this while keeping the look classy and elegant. Instead of cartoon fish on a shower curtain, think of the not so obvious. For example, you can implement a nautical theme in your bathroom by using a piece of heavy white rope as a curtain rod, and hanging framed ships’ flags and maps on the walls for decoration. Or for a beach theme, keep fixtures as natural as possible: use natural driftwood for a curtain rod or towel rail, lay wooden flooring, and install wood paneling to the bottom halves of walls and to give it a soft, “distressed” look. Again, these fixtures will go some way to add personality to a plain white bathroom suite, without stamping it with too much of an individual look. However, when creating a theme for a bathroom (or for any room), it is imcontinues on next page

portant not to make the mistake of going overboard. Just one or two touches are all that’s needed to make a look work. It’s also best to keep a bathroom uncluttered as this is a room in which people like to relax, and no one wants to feel claustrophobic in the smallest room in the house. Keeping fixtures and embellishments to a minimum will help to create a sense of peace and tranquility which will be most welcoming for your guests. If the room is big enough, you can place a basket with a selection of books and magazines in it on the floor, or dedicate a few shelves to some reading material for your family and guests. You can also dot a few candles around for your guests to use when they take a bath so they feel that they can truly indulge themselves. While it’s fun to dress a room, you need to ensure that it’s functional. For example, using a rope to improvise as a curtain rail may look good, but it will be of little use if the curtain can’t be drawn and your guests are left feeling exposed to your neighbors when they take a bath. Always ensure that practicality, safety and comfort can work in conjunction with style in your bathroom. In addition, don’t compromise hygiene standards for the sake of a good looking bathroom. Ensure that your remodeling proj-

Stylish Bathrooms ect takes account of all necessary hygiene requirements. Remodeling a bathroom needn’t be time consuming or expensive. Just a few imaginative touches are sometimes all that’s needed. And remember that while it may be the smallest room in the house, it’s the one that usually leaves a lasting impression on visitors.

Her experience in the maledominated world of fire fighting has been one of professionalism and determination. “At the beginning of my career, there were not many women; I wanted to be treated as a member of the team, and be known for my qualifications as a firefighter and ability to contribute to the team efforts; I

Welch adjusted her philosophy when she was promoted to Fire Captain during her 10th year of service. “I felt that position of leadership required me to be honest in regards to my personal life with my peers and subordinates.
