It Can Wait

This is Alex Brown. Her life was taken when she was just 17 years old, Due to texting while driving. Alex Brown was a normal teenager, she was the school mascot, she was at the top of her class, she was in FFA and she was in the schools’ band. Sadly she was not as invincible as she thought she was. Brown’s life ended soon after she crashed her truck due to texting while driving as well as not wearing a seatbelt. Maybe you’re like her and think, “it’s not going to happen to me”, but how do you know that? In 2010, 3,000 people were killed due to distracted driving.1 Those 3,000 people probably didn’t think it was going to happen to them either. Studies show that those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash.2 Also almost all teens (nine out of 10) expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less, which puts pressure on them to respond while driving.3 Alex’s family travels the country telling students the story of their loved one so that they can learn from her and make a difference. They show the students that just changing a few parts of their routine could potentially save their lives. An investigation on Alex’s death later showed that she would have lived if she had just taken a second to buckle her seatbelt.

Along with their story, they bring a pledge. If you promise to never text and drive and to always wear your seatbelt feel free to sign the copy we’ve provided on the adjacent page. Alex Brown might not have had a chance at a full life, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t. Think to yourself “Was that text worth my life?”

Alex’s truck travels with her family as a visual to persuade teens to wear a seatbelt and not text and drive.
