Rain doesn’t stop walkers’ enthusiasm ESTI STEWART

NE of only two sunny days of the week belonged to the third Enid Pretorius Properties Trail Walk & Run, which took place on Women’s Day, August 9.
Continuous rain over the last few weeks made various areas inaccessible, and the unspoilt beauty of Mostertshoek had to be replaced by the tranquillity of St Francis Field, resulting in a slightly shortened distance, only 20km. The event kicked off at 9am when 106 runners and walkers left the Enid Pretorius Properties offices in the Village Centre. They followed the markers through the Village to the Granny’s Pool and used the Two Harbour
Walk to get to the first water and check point at Chez Patrick, Port St Francis. From there they continued towards Shark Point, but had to climb a steep dune to get onto the Cape St Francis beach. The second water and check point was at the lighthouse. At Sunset rock, the third water point, athletes turned north and proceeded on the old Humansdorp Road into St Francis Field. Once at the main entrance to this airfield, they only had 5km more to go to the finish line. Runners from afar as Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth paid St Francis a special visit to compete in this scenic event, and agreed they will be back next year. The overall winner was Deon Zeelie from Port Elizabeth, who finished in 1 hour 31 minutes. Right behind him
in second was Dawid Ferreira, followed by Sipho Matikwane from St Francis Bay in third place. Jeffreys Bay Athletic Club’s chairlady, Lindi Meyer won the ladies race in 1 hour 43 minutes, with Katrien van Heerden in second and Vanessa Lessing in third place. They all received St Francis Sport medals. Positions were not awarded for the walkers, but a special prize, sponsored by FunkyTown B&B went to Nic Snyman (67), being the oldest competitor, and the youngest competitor, Mark Orrin Killian received a prize from Funky Frogs. All finishers received a hand made medal from Enid Pretorius and the first 100 entries drawbags from Enid Pretorius.
