This popular loop is created through a connection of trails including Cemetery By-Pass, Kiddie Up and What’s Up Doc. The trail offers a great introduction to singletrack riding in Fernie, with moderately sustained climbing on gentle switchbacks through forested terrain. At the top of Cemetery By-Pass you can stop and enjoy the view before starting the next set of climbs. The loop trail can be enjoyed in either direction.

This trail follows the eastern shore of the Elk River within town, connecting Annex Park, Dogwood Park and James White Park. Including portions of the Trans Canada Trail, this diverse trail includes river views, secluded forest, bird viewing, duck pond and picnic areas. This trail is suitable to pull a chariot and there are outdoor public washrooms located in all the parks. Additional trails extend to Maiden Lake and the Visitor Information Centre.

The Inclusive Trail connects Coal Creek Road to the Montane Hut via an easy, wide, gravel trail, allowing all levels of trail users to enjoy views of the spectacular Lizard Range. The trail travels through forested sections before opening up to wide valley views in all directions. The trail leads to the Montane Hut where you can relax and savour the surrounding landscape from the viewpoint bench. During cooler weather, you can warm up inside the hut.

This trail is accessible from the Mt. Fernie Provincial Park, where you’ll ascend up to the beautiful Island Lake Lodge. Once there, take in the stunning mountain views and relax on the deck before negotiating the downhill and smooth flowing berms back to the bottom. This machine-built flowy trail winds through forest, old growth cedars, viewpoints and creek bridge crossings. As this trail is an out-and-back, be aware of riders in both directions.

This trail is situated within the Ridgemont area and can be accessed starting from downtown; limited parking at the trailhead. Depart downtown along 4th St, crossing the railway tracks and head up the hill on Ridgemont Drive. Turn right onto Ridgemont Crescent and right again onto St. Margarets Road. The trailhead is accessible just outside the gates of St. Margaret’s Cemetery. Starting on Cemetery By-Pass, the single-track gently winds upwards until it plateaus above the City reservoir to join the gently ascending switchbacks of Kiddie Up via a short double-track section. Enjoy a break at the bench prior to beginning your descent on What’s Up Doc.

Park at Annex Park at the corner of 11th St & 12th Ave, follow the road up & over the dike to access the parking lot on the left. Follow the trail over the footbridge, visible from the parking lot, which will lead towards the river. Heading downstream this portion of the trail is also known as the Emily Brydon Trail. Follow the trail along the river to Dogwood Park and the boat launch. Continue on the trail until it meets the road, and turn right to cross the bridge over Coal Creek, rejoining the trail on the other side and following downstream into James White Park. The trail loops around the Park. Return the way you came, or via downtown Fernie.

From downtown, drive past the Fernie Aquatic Centre on Pine Ave. and turn left onto Coal Creek Road. Stay on this road for approx. 600m until you see the parking lot on your right. The trailhead begins after crossing the bridge over Coal Creek, follow the trail sign markers for ‘Montane Blue.’ As you gain elevation you will cross a wide wooden bridge with the trail marker ‘Uprooted to Montane Trail.’ Follow this trail until you see a sign marker directing you to the right onto ‘Montane Trail,’ which will lead you to the Montane Hut. This trail is within private property with access granted by the Montane landowner, Parastone Developments.

Proceed to Mt Fernie Provincial Park, located 3 km’s west of Fernie off Hwy 3. Continue through the campground and onto a gravel road and look for a designated parking lot on the right-hand side. Begin on the Hedonism/Stove Connector trail and turn left onto the Lazy Lizard Connector trail, which avoids biking on the road. Within 2km’s this meets up with the Lazy Lizard trail. From here it climbs moderately for the next 3km’s, then continues at a steeper ascent until reaching a viewpoint. The trail then levels out and proceed to follow the signage if you wish to continue to Island Lake Lodge.
