EDITORIAL
Art, fashion, photography and music – these are the main focuses of KNEON, a young and fresh magazine born in the spring of 2010 on Viennese grounds. This first issue is romantic with a bit of a harsh edge; you’ll notice that in the photos as well as the art. It’s about how two completely different sides – soft and harsh – meet and balance out in an oxymoronic way that simply works out. KNEON is about accepting the good things and learning to live with the bad; it’s about realizing that life doesn’t end when something bad happens and feeling alive and taking advantage of youth to its fullest while it’s in bloom. KNEON is about youth, energy and discovering beauty in absolutely everything. I hope you enjoy this first issue. VICTOIRE JIN //

Sandra Hagelstam A lover of sky-high heels and street-style blogs, this 22-year-old Fashion Design and Marketing student, currently residing in London, gives us tips on where to buy highheels in London and talks about her dream shoes, the fashion industry and her love for dressing up. by victoire jin

What is your impression of the fashion industry? It is a very tough
and hectic world and some people don’t realize how influential it actually is. You really have to love it and be 100% committed to be working in fashion, but then of course there is so many different approaches and it might take a while to find your place. When you’re doing something that you feel like you would do even if you didn’t get paid, then you’re in the right place.
What did you study at university? And at which university? I
study fashion design and marketing at London college of fashion. I still have a year to go and plan on appling to a shoe design degree later on. I guess it’s not such a huge surprise that I’ve decided on that.
Why did you start your blog? I
have been reading blogs for years and finally decided to start one when I moved to london. I love photography and spend too much time dressing up and being vain. Starting a personal style blog felt like I good idea and I am happy I started!
How do you think fashion blogs influence the fashion industry? Hugely right now- but I see it as a winwin situation for bloggers and designers to team up - both benefit from it.
Do you think your style or anything about you has altered since starting your blog? If yes, what has changed? I trust my own judgement
more and feel encouraged to dress in whatever I feel like. When I see a dress or a pair of shoes, I know right away if they are me or not.
You have an absolutely amazing shoe collection and live in the legendary London: any tips on where to find great shoes? Well thank you! I buy at a lot of high street and the department store sales - some have amazing designer shoes for a good price. Also look for designer ‘warehouse sales’. They might be somewhere further away but are always worth the visit.
How do you decide what you are going to wear that day? Something
zine, but mostly it’s just by feeling. I do have to admit that I love dressing in head-to-toe ‘little outfits’ matching a theme.
Where do you get inspiration from? I read many different maga-
zines on a daily basic, both men’s and women’s. I am also aware of what is presented on the catwalks and like to take some of the elements and fit them into my outfits. Other blogs, especially street-style ones, are the best for inspiration and ideas. Not just for the styling but also for the beautiful pictures.
Lastly, if you could only have one pair of shoes for the rest of your life, which ones would it be? I’m

Although spring turned into summer, It also turned into the perfect time of year to bring out delicate shades of pink, tan and cream. Not to mention explosions of chiffon, tulle and silk. One complaint? Sometimes it’s hard to pull off this look without looking like you’re heading for the nude beach. In fact, many young fashion addicts and bloggers are going the total different direction by dripping with leather, chunky metal jewelry and hardware boots. Since summer isn’t usually the time for die-hard textures, sometimes it’s in your best interest to take advice from punk-pretty Alexa Chung and rock that frilly dress with some leather boots, funky sunglasses or a classic leather jacket. Just like they say, opposites really do attract!

SUMMERTIME COOL How does a girl stay chic in the summer heat? It’s a question many of us have pondered over as the summer months approach- ‘I love this jumper- but will it be too warm in the summer?’ or ‘I love these shoes but will I slip if they get sticky in the heat?’ So many potential wardrobe malfunctions. Therefore, for the first issue of Kneon, I’m going to give you a few pointers. You know when all the magazines/ websites/blogs (delete as appropriate) tell you that a lightweight t-shirt is the simple yet fashionable answer for any hot summers day? Well, they’re wrong. Not only can a t-shirt be extremely uncomfortable in the heat, but also having fabric under your arms in the heat is never going to help you look chic- even if it is fashionable. I have a huge issue with the seasons, when it’s hot I either get too hot and feel uncomfortable, especially knowing my new cut out top is giving me some horrendous tan lines. Or, the weather turns and my short shorts
make me look far too keen and like one of those people who don’t understand that when it’s cold, one covers up. Then a few months later the opposite happens in the winter. When it’s cold, I also get hot because I always over do it on the layers, and if I walk anywhere, I spontaneously combust. This is no way to live. Now of course, there are the obvious answers: always bring a light jumper or tights, but these are perhaps too obvious, and lets be honest, none of us do it. We always think we know the weather, know our fashion- so what could possibly go wrong? A lot, my friends could go wrong. As I have explained above, so many of a whole list of things could happen. When I type in ‘how to look good in hot weather’ into our favourite search engine, I am bombarded with ‘hot weather make up tips’ and ‘6 hot weather hair tips’. These aren’t my problems, my hair is wavy and I generally go for the ‘messy’ look. Hot weather doesn’t change this. And, yes, sometimes when it’s hot I
need to reapply a little make up, but I know how to do that. What I want to know is what do I do when I have visible signs of perspirations on my body, when my face is burning whilst I’m having lunch. Even on the first page, there’s a site for ‘how to look hot in snowy weather’. No! Clearly no one in the whole world has the answer to looking good in heat, and staying stylish in heat. Maybe there isn’t an answer? And anyway, by the time you’ve sorted out what to do in the hot weather, the cold weather arrives- it’s a vicious circle. I think the answer is to do as you do. I know this is a complete cop out of an answer- but did you think I’d be the only one in the world to know? Surely not. I will wear my cut out top anyway, I will hope that the weather stays just as it did whilst I was getting dressed, that it will be sunny and hot, but not too hot, and with a light breeze in case (God forbid!) I should perspire. Now, where are my shorts?

When did you first become interested in photography? I have always been interested in photography, but it really started when I found my fathers film camera last summer. Did you have any formal training in photography? No I don’t. But my dream is to go abroad to school! Why do you like to take photos? I love to create things and inspire people. And photography combines these two aspects. Are you signed with an agency? Yes I’m with Eskimo models here in Iceland. You were also a model before, tell us about your experience in the fashion world. Well, I loved to model at first. But then I wasn’t interested anymore to be in front of the camera. I just really wanted to be behind the camera. What are you planning on studying? What is your dream job? My plan is to study photography and fashion. Maybe in London or NY. And my dream job is to work for various fashion magazines and things like that.
If you could have one amazing DSLR camera or a lifelong supply of instant cameras, which would you choose? Lifelong supply of instant camera, no doubt about that. The DSLR camera would probably break anyway after few years or less. What sort of equipment and editing software do you use? I use two old film cameras. Konica FT-1 and Kodak point-and-shoot camera. I don’t photoshop my photos much but if I do I use Adobe Photoshop CS4. What kind of locations do you prefer? It depends on what you are shooting. But the nature is always the best location. Where do you get your inspiration for shoots? I get inspiration from all sorts of things. Like my friends, music, the nature and occasionally when I’m surfing through the world web. If you could photograph anyone in the world, who would it be? Vivian Leigh in the height of her career (I hope I can count a person that has passed away).

In an exclusive interview with Deine Jugend, the new sassy electropop band from Mannheim, Germany, reveals their musical influences, goals and tips for aspiring bands.
How did you come up with your band name? It was Bonassis’ idea; we wanted something short and significant. But when he came up with the name I thought it was totally crappy at first. I thought about the name for hours and hours and got used to it. Eventually I liked the fact to be part of “Deine Jugend”. Tell us about your music: what do you sound like? We want to sound like a hard electro, booty shaking bumper car at a cool club. We are not afraid and really like to use clear und sometimes easy popmusic structures because we love good-produced music such as Lady
Gaga, Rihanna and Britney Spears. Who plays what and how long have you each played your instruments? When we play live we’ve got drums, sometimes a guitar and of course our macbook. Both boys have been playing their instruments since they were little kids. They know each other since kindergarten and had a few bands before “Deine Jugend”. I discovered my voice and love for music as a teenager - I’m good at singing but a very bad guitar player. At the first “Deine Jugend” shows I played the guitar for a few songs but then decided that it would be cooler not only for us
but also for the audience I just sing and dance. How did the band form? What inspired you to make music together? The boys looked for a singer via MySpace for the remix of a song. I sent in a video where I sang a few covers at a formal gala dinner in a black dress and red heels. After that they invited me to their house, we had a little chat and recorded the hook of “Papa geht jetzt steil”. We already knew each other because we hail from the same villages and I knew what kind of music they make, so it felt extremely good

A big part is, of course, the music we like but it also divides us in a way. Bonassis likes rap music, Havanna’s favourite band is Pearl Jam and I like to shake my hips to good beat music.

Tell us about your album-recording process. How does it all go? We started recording our tracks in the basement of Bonassis’ house in his tiny studio. Some people discovered us and our songs via Myspace and gave us the opportunity to record our stuff in their studio in Frankfurt. We wrote songs, met at the studio and recorded them there was nothing like live-jamming in a rehearsal room and putting together single pieces. Maybe that’s another aspect in doing electronic music - you start working on your computer, complete the song and then rehearse it as a band.
We also don’t like to rehearse and try to concentrate as much as possible to minimize the time of rehearsal. Who are your major musical influences? As mentioned, we love good pop music and mix it with our own ideas and our own musical perception. We always keep an eye on the wonderful Lady Gaga and see our roots in the German music of the 80ties like DAF and Kraftwerk. The expressive beats and the way lyrics are used are very inspiring to us and always present when we talk about mixing the music. If you could tour or perform with any artist/band, which would it be? It would be very cool to tour with Robyn - she’s great! What is the ultimate direction for your band? What are your goals and dreams? Our first goal was reached by releasing
our EP and the video of “Deine Maske”. We were really amazed by the attention people gave us and the fact that the CD was sold out at Amazon at the first day. (It was a small pressing we gave to Amazon because we didn’t expect anything like that). The next goal is to have a good album release in September, to get to know what people think about it. But before that we have to do a video for the next single, create the album artwork and organize a little tour in the fall. What advice do you have for any aspirating musicians reading this? It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock’n roll. Don’t ever give up, try everything until you find your own way to see and feel music. Work hard and believe in your band and your talents and don’t give a damn about the guys around you that keep on telling how great their band is and how close to a record deal they are because in most cases it’s just blahblah.

Tell us a bit about yourself I was born in Vienna, but always moved back and forth between Toronto and Vienna. Ever since I was little I was drawn to creative things. I always took an interest for architecture and always kept to date with what was the highest building at the moment. I was always so proud of Toronto for having the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere. My dad being an enthusiastic pilot would love to take me flying so I could observe the cities from above. Though architecture has always been my passion, I always wanted to be a movie direc-

tor. From a young age I would watch horror movies, comedies, complicated thrillers. It was always important to me to see a wide range of movie genres. After the movie I would start contemplating about it forever and often dream about it. When I was 11 I enrolled in the Vienna International School. I just graduated in June and have been very fortunate to have gone there for 7 years. I have met several friends that shared my interest in the creative arts and will be pursuing it in there life. My enrollment at VIS compelled me to notice fashion as well. Interestingly in G10 I took art
and was advised by my the g10 teacher not to take I.B art. She claimed I would struggle. Nevertheless I took it and it was my most enjoyable course, which helped me discover that I want to pursue art in the future. This fall I’ll be doing a foundation course in art and design at Central Saint Martins in London. What do your paintings reflect? My art is based on contemporary urban culture. The first challenge our teacher gave us is to work with a long piece of canvas and we were allowed to use any props we needed. The idea was to

work without a preconceived notion of what we were going to do and not bother thinking about it. The outcome was an abstract piece. My piece had paint splattered all over the place. It compelled me not to work from an idea, but to just start working and focusing on different surfaces, textures and elements that I can incorporate into a piece, it all became about mixing media without a clue of what I was doing. Even though I used such distinct media and every piece had a different vision, there is still a connection. This developed am urban jungle theme, which I developed further in the past two years. My work has a spontaneous appeal. The ink and paint smudges add to the spontaneity factor. A lot of my work on canvas is so cluttered that there is no place to fit another giraffe print or ink drop. This reflects on how in the big cities like New York and London everyone is fighting for space. There are no empty spaces. Humans are growing in population but land is only becoming scarcer and more expensive. I would say my exhibition reflects on how humans are encroaching the animal inhabitant, reducing their land space and most importantly exposing them to our artificial lifestyle. In my New York Painting I printed with linoleum block images of animals. One derived from a fashion shoot, where a chimpanzee was wearing a human suit and encouraged to jump along with this model. The print hangs right off the Empire State Building. The monkey figure resembles King Kong, enhancing the idea of how very often the media portrays harmless animals as threatening creatures. I feel when I use colours in their purest form they embellish this idea that animals are endangered by the high level of artificiality in our civilization. What is art for you? To me art has to be effective and it’s got to work. I think art creates a hype around the world in different ways and gives people a reason to live for, as corny as that sounds. In fashion there is this worldwide competition who is best dressed and everyone anticipates what will be the new trend at this seasons runways show . Encouraging
people to go to fashion shows, art galleries or see the movie with the highest ratings. It’s an escape out of reality to exercise our imagination and appreciate people for what they can do with their imagination. If the art is utterly ugly, but sends some important message or political statement that creates a hype and discussion, then that is effective too and can be called art. Some say photography isn’t art, I would disagree. Photography is the breakthrough out of the prevailing world of art. Our world is moving so fast now, Photography is the only tool of modern art that can keep up with the paste of our modern world. As long as it creates an impact on the public eye it doesn’t matter so much if its aesthetic art or not. In the end when I had to decide what I should put in my art exhibition, it came down to if it was stark madness enough, because that is what the spectators thought had the most impact. Who/what inspires you? Artists like Peter Beard and Burhan Dogancay inspired my exhibition. I was both intrigued by Beard’s serious philosophy on land scarcity in Africa and inspired by his journalistic collages. From Burhan Dogancay I learned a great deal about composition. When I want a quick inspiration I’ll check out the photographs posted by various blogs. The environment that I’m in plays a crucial role. This summer I was inspired by the junk that I found in my dad’s garage at our lake property in Canada. I found an old 40’s TV that belonged to my grandfather, that has a been completely vandalized by the thief’s that broke in years ago. Now I’m trying to work with different junk elements with geometric panels. Maybe I can clash a theme between paranoia and vandalism. Will see. What are you planning on studying and becoming? Firstly I want to finish my foundation course in art and design at Central Saint martins and then figure out which field of art I want to pursuit.

hayden lemire Tell us a bit about yourself Well my paintings usually reflect things im interested in. For example, my abe lincoln series was started because of my interest in the Obama election and his similarities to lincoln as a president. My later pieces mostly reflect my interest in street art and skateboarding and the multiple media and depth of those subjects. What is art for you? art for me is a place for me to have fun and experiment. I am constantly thinking up ideas everyday, however they are usually extremely fantastical and not within my talent or budget to accomplish. but i like to think that someday they will be. =) i like my process of creating art to be fun and exciting. i love to laugh so i might just do something random in my pieces to make myself

or others chuckle. art is not only a release of creativity for me, it is a way for me to have fun. Who/what inspires you? I am inspired a lot by other artists whether they be my peers or gallary owners i meet or people i find online. I am also inspired by everyday life. Mostly by very vibrant colors that catch my eye. I am also very interested in photography which is a big influence in my art. I am currently working on a piece for my father of a photo i took of the lake i live at during sunrise. There are a million different shades of red orange and purple and it will make a stunning painting. What are you planning on studying and becoming? This year i am attending the London College of Communi-
cation in london for a year of foundation in art and design. This is a course to help me narrow down my interests in art and pick a major for the next three years. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? i dont know what i want to study or become yet because i dont know what medium of art and design i prefer, however i do know that i want to apply whatever i decide to become to making something material or useful. i am intersted in owning either my own gallery or store of some sort or opening up my own line of clothing, skateboards or ski equipment that i can apply my creative talent to. It will be an interesting ride and i cant wait to see where it takes me!
YOUNG ART Tell us a bit about yourself I’m 18 years old, Chinese, and I like cake. Preferably cheese cake with a deep, luscious chocolate finish, and a cherry perched on top.
Or at least savoring the experience, whether good or bad. Of course, there are many things that you can’t get in an exhibition or gallery, so you have to find it yourself.
What do your paintings reflect? My paintings are a representation of a lost and wandering dreamer seeking a superficial state of freedom and bliss. Recurring themes include ambiguity, rhythm and flow, absorption, intensity - anything to take you away from where you are standing, what you think you are. None or all of the above.
Who/what inspires you? Street art is a major influence. The small, the large, the unexpected. A sudden revelation, or a mutual connection. The ‘click’ that gives you a relentless sense of purpose in a sea of foreboding demand.
What is art for you? Art is realization that you are enjoying the moment.

I’m going to study economics and political science at UC Berkeley, but I know that all I really want to do is put some stupid art works on your streets.
