In zonder twijfel het meest vermetele programma van deze festival-editie, wordt het symfonieorkest van de Zweedse radio beurtelings aangevoerd door twee van de meest prominente dirigenten van dit moment, tevens twee muziekdieren pur sang. VALERy GERGIEV neemt Tsjajkovski’s Vijfde voor zijn rekening, ESA-PEKKA SALOnEn de Vijfde van Sibelius. Russen bij Russen, Finnen bij Finnen. Overdrijven maakt aanschouwelijk, zeggen de Duitsers, maar beide heren kennen daar zonder twijfel een goede vertaling van.

Concert événement ou plutôt deux concerts en un avec le même orchestre et deux chefs qui se succèdent dans une Cinquième symphonie qui leur ressemble. Tchaïkovski pour le bouillant VALERy GERGIEV, Sibelius pour l’implacable ESA-PEKKA SALOnEn. Une première pour vous montrer qu’un orchestre, tout comme un instrument, sonne à la manière de celui qui en joue.

Arguably KlaraFestival’s most spectacular event involves two of the conducting world’s leading personalities – the Mariinsky Theatre’s VALERy GERGIEV and ESA-PEKKA SALOnEn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. For tonight’s concert, they will share the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, giving the audience the chance to hear a first-rate orchestra working under two thoroughly different musicians. With Gergiev, they will perform Tchaikovsky’s unrelentingly tragic Fifth. After the intermission, Salonen will reveal a heroic Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony.

Muziek uit Zweden, een universele taal In het kader van het Zweeds EU-Voorzitterschap is er in België een ruim aanbod aan evenementen. Deze events moeten artistieke expressie koppelen aan belangrijke doelstellingen van het Zweedse Voorzitterschap, zoals de strijd tegen de klimaatverandering en de versterking van de samenwerking tussen de landen rondom de Baltische Zee. Een aantal conferenties en seminaries zijn aan de evenementen gelinkt, maar de nadruk ligt op muziek – de universele taal, deze keer uiteraard met een duidelijke Noordse toon, ongeacht of het gaat om Samische rockmuziek, jazz of om grote klassiekers. Een hoogtepunt is een Brusselse versie van het Baltic Sea Festival – dit KlaraFestival – waar fantastische muzikanten zoals vanavond the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, een prachtige boodschap uitdragen van samenwerking over de grenzen heen en ook van liefde voor de natuur. Tot slot willen we alle Belgische partners hartelijk danken voor hun inzet waardoor dit programma mogelijk is gemaakt. Een smeulend vuur

borst. “Een smeulend vuur. Dat brandt meer op den duur” en dat is maar goed ook: Collins werkt immers aan een Schumann-integrale. Zijn programma draagt daarvan de sporen: wie anders zou u de haast nooit gespeelde Intermezzi opus 4 van Schumann voorschotelen? Niet dat we niet van sport houden, maar op het podium lijken brains en groove - overigens een zeldzame combinatie – ons belangrijker dan fysieke kunstjes. Wie die mening ook is toegedaan, moet het parcours maar eens bekijken van de vele fijne pianisten die bij ons te gast zijn. De fijnbesnaarde Ier Finghin Collins won in 1999 de Clara Haskil-wedstrijd. Totnogtoe was hij één keer in ons land te gast, enkele jaren geleden in Gent. Wie er toen bij was, weet wat te verwachten: een bescheiden, hoewel aristocratische in-

Gergiev - Salonen het grote duel Dit is de onbetwiste klapper van het KlaraFestival 2009. Eén en hetzelfde Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, twee dirigenten die de fakkel doorgeven, telkens met een Vijfde symfonie die hun op het lijf is geschreven. De vurige Gergiev kiest voor Tchaikovsky, de onverbiddelijke Salonen houdt het op Sibelius. Première op woensdag 9 september om 20.00 uur. Het bewijs dat een orkest, net zoals een instrument, klinkt zoals wie het bespeelt. Eerste ronde: Valery Gergiev. Hij mag dan een onvermoeibaar ondernemer zijn, hij is in de eerste plaats een van ’s werelds meest gegeerde dirigenten. Je wordt bijna fysiek onwel als je getuige bent van de onbreekbare band tussen zijn tot het uiterste gespannen lichaam en zijn opgejutte orkest. Alsof elke muzieklessenaar en elke muzikant een verlengstuk van zijn vingers is. Alleen Boulez wekt een vergelijkbare indruk van volledig meesterschap, maar dan minus de vurigheid. Gergiev is immers een voortdurend uitbarstende vulkaan die het orkest onontkoombaar opzweept tot het witheet kleurt. De grootse lyriek en rijke orkestrale dichtheid van Tchaikovsky zitten hem als gegoten, vooral dan het sombere noodlotsthema in de Vijfde symfonie. De componist vecht er een robbertje uit met het christelijke geloof, met zijn verlossing als inzet. Inleiding. Had je Esa-Pekka twintig jaar geleden verteld dat hij Sibelius zou dirigeren, hij had je voor gek verklaard. Toen was hij in de ban van de nieuwe seriële muziek. Aansluitend op zijn studie aan het conservatorium van Helsinki wil hij zich vooral verdiepen in muziek die van het publiek betere mensen maakt. Waarmee hij de voetsporen drukt van zijn mentor Witold Lutosławski. Met zijn vrienden Lindberg en Saariaho richt hij het ensemble Korvat auki! (open oren) op. Daarmee geeft hij in voorsteden Kurtág-concerten “voor twee verloren gelopen oudere dames”, zo vertelt hij in 2007 aan The Guardian. In dat jaar wordt hij triomfantelijk binnengehaald als dirigent van het Philharmonia Orchestra, 24 jaar nadat zijn leven een andere wending nam. Een bekende van de editie van vorig jaar: het Zodiak Trio, wiens heavy mix van jazz en rock er ingaat als zoete koek. Trompet, gitaren en percussie, stevige loops, sound-scapes en verregaande strakke improvisatie. Meer moet dat niet zijn. •

Een festival zonder barokmuziek organiseren: het zou ons niet verbazen als men daar tegenwoordig voor vervolgd kan worden. Dus maar Ziv Braha gebeld, een puike luitist uit Israël. Hij laat zich bijstaan door de ItaliaansZwitserse Chiara Banchini - voor een rondje Bach en... Haydn. Geen barokmens, maar je bent maar één keer tweehonderd jaar dood, toch? • FORZA MUSICA !

Musique made in Sweden, un langage universel Dans le cadre de la présidence suédoise à l’UE, la Belgique accueillera un florilège d’événements, associant l’expression artistique et les objectifs critiques de la Présidence suédoise tels que la lutte contre le changement climatique et le renforcement de la coopération entre les pays autour de la Mer Baltique. Des conférences et séminaires seront associés à ces événements, mais le fil rouge sera la musique – langage universel qui, pour l’occasion, appuiera sur les notes nordiques, que ce soit à travers le rock, le jazz ou les grands classiques. Un des points forts de cette série d’événements est sans conteste la version bruxelloise du Baltic Sea Festival – le KlaraFestival, qui accueille de fantastiques musiciens et groupes tels que, les deux derniers jours (10 & 11.09), le Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Nous voyons là un très beau véhicule de la coopération transfrontalière, mais aussi un très beau message d’amour pour la nature. Enfin, nous remercions chaleureusement tous les partenaires belges pour leur apport dans la réalisation de ce programme. Un feu qui couve

Ne pensez surtout pas que nous n’aimons pas le sport. Nous avons d’autres priorités : brains et groove sont pour nous plus importants que quelconque exploit physique. Ceux qui adhèrent à cette opinion devraient examiner le parcours de nos pianistes invités. Leurs professeurs sont Lubimov et Wirssaladze et ils se sont faits remarquer lors des concours prestigieux. Ce sont des artistes pour qui la musique est davantage une affaire de cœur que de bras. Collins, ce pianiste irlandais très sensible qui remporte en 1999 le Concours Haskil n’est pas un inconnu des Belges pour s’être fait applaudir il y a quelques années à Gand. Il s’était déjà montré fiévreusement passionné en août 2008, à Cardiff, avec l’orchestre de la BBC, livrant toute la trame dramatique du Requiem et son écriture contrapuntique. Alors à la tête d’un orchestre dont il est le chef principal ! Redécouvrez le chef-d’œuvre de Verdi avec le chef le plus rock ’n’ roll d’aujourd’hui : Daniel Harding. •

Metal-jazz germanique comme son cousin Zo Knarr ? En tout cas, le trio électroacoustique Zodiak a fait forte impression l’an passé, furieusement rock mais sans sacrifier lyrisme et créativité sonore totale. Même mot d’ordre : im-pro-vi-ser ! •

Ziv Braha, joueur de luth et Juif errant à Bruxelles, avait plongé l’an passé le public du Beurs dans l’extase. Le sourire aux lèvres, il l’avait mené au cœur de Bach. Cette fois, il s’est allié à la magnifique violoniste Chiara Banchini avec qui il part en quête du Cantor et lui accole un Haydn totalement authentique. •

Music from Sweden, an universal language A whole array of events is being organised in Belgium in the context of the Swedish presidency of the EU. Events that are intended to connect artistic expression with key goals of the Swedish presidency, such as the fight against climate change and the strengthening of cooperation between the countries around the Baltic Sea. A number of talks and seminars are linked to these events, but the emphasis is on music – the universal language, albeit this time with a distinctly Nordic tone, whether we are talking about Sami rock music, jazz, or the great classics. One highlight is a Brussels version of the Baltic Sea Festival – this KlaraFestival – in which fantastic musicians, such as this evening's Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, convey a splendid message of cross-border cooperation and also of love for nature. In conclusion, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our Belgian partners for their commitment, which has made this programme possible. The Irish pianist Finghin Collins won the Clara Haskil Competition in 1999. Before now he has only been a guest in our country once. Anyone who was there will know what to expect: a modest, but aristocratic disposition.

As you watch, transfixed, you can actually feel the unbreakable connection between his tense frame and his highly charged orchestra. It’s almost as though each section, each musician, were an extension of his fingers. Apart from Boulez, hardly any other conductor can give such an impression of complete mastery, and none can match Gergiev’s fire. Gergiev, one realises, is a perfect match for Tchaikovsky’s majestic lyricism and rich orchestral palette, and particularly for the Fifth Symphony, with its dark themes, its questioning of whether Christian faith can really lead to redemption in the face of the overwhelming power of fate. “Introduction: Total submission before destiny or, which amounts to the same thing, before the ineluctable predestination of Providence,” wrote Tchaikovsky. “Allegro I: Murmurs, doubts, complaints, reproaches against XXX. II: Is it not better to throw oneself heart and soul into faith?” And later: “No, there is no hope”. Tchaikovsky obviously hadn’t counted on Gergiev! Round Two: Esa-Pekka Salonen Next to Gergiev, all other conductors are lightweights, surely? Let’s take a look at our challenger, the Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Here is a man who has thrown his gauntlet firmly down with his choice of music. He will follow the Russian Gergiev by conducting Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony (1917). The work symbolises the liberation of Finland…from Russia. All the same, if anyone had told him, 20 years ago, that he would be conducting Sibelius, Salonen wouldn’t have believed his ears. At the time, he was more interested in contemporary music. Following his studies at the Helsinki Academy, he was above all keen to deepen his understanding of music. Music that had the power to make people better. He founded the “Korvat auki!” (open ears), with his friends Lindberg and Saariaho, and gave Kurtág concerts in the suburbs, “to two old ladies who had come to the wrong venue by mistake”, he told The Guardian in 2007. That same year, he triumphantly took up the post of Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, 24 years after that famous British orchestra had changed the direction of his life forever. In 1983 Salonen was rushed in to replace Michael Tilson-Thomas at the head of the Philharmonia in a per-

formance of Mahler’s Third. Salonen threw himself into it and the shock waves from the resulting acclaim transformed him forever. In 1984 he became head of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Having been exposed to LA’s thousand cultures, he defied expectations by joining forces with the director Peter Sellars and the video artist Bill Viola to create an incredible production of Tristan und Isolde, which was welcomed to the Bastille by Gérard Mortier. You might also find him competing in charm with the pianist with the wolves, Hélène Grimaud, or composing in real time in the Santa Monica Apple Store. That old favourite – Verdi’s lavish Requiem - is given the treatment by rock ’n’ roll conductor Daniel Harding and his Swedish Radio Orchestra and Choir. Simon Rattle’s one-time assistant may look the part of a rock musician - pale and slightly built - but he has a highly constructed musical intelligence and a great deal of finesse. •

This is Zodiak Trio’s second visit to the KlaraFestival, where their particular brand of teutonic heavy metal jazz went down extremely well. They’re top of the charts in their native Germany. •

Two exceptionally gifted baroque musicians, Israeli lute player Ziv Braha and Italian baroque violinist Chiara Banchini, will play Bach and Haydn sonatas for lute and violin. •

« Concert historique, cher public ! » avança Patrick de Clerck, modeste. Mardi midi, le Studio 1 était bourré, en effet, les pianistes, innombrables, et la presse, venue parfois de loin pour écouter la légendaire Elisso Virsladze dans son premier concert du jour (il y en aura un autre le soir…). Configuration quasi improvisée, avec le Quatuor Aviv, qui, fort de ses premiers cd Chostakovitch, n’avait pas hésité à pactiser avec la spécialiste de Mozart et de Beethoven pour l’aventure du quintette ; et première à Bruxelles d’un compatriote tombé du ciel (mais déjà repéré dans les milieux musicaux), le jeune altiste Nathan Braude, tempérament de feu, sonorités de velours (et physique en rapport). On disait « historique ». Ce fut pour le moins un concert mémorable : d’une violence inouïe, chargé de toute la fureur du monde, tiraillé entre des cordes de lumière et un piano d’airain. Grâce soit rendue à l’allegretto final et salvateur, si doux, soudain, si apaisé qu’il fallut que l’héroïne du jour quitte son banc pour que le public, rompu, comprenne que c’était la fin… • M D M
