When you hear the word “spring,” what are the first images that come to mind? For me, the word brings up a few different things: tulips, daffodils and crocuses poking up through the thawed ground, trees bursting into bloom, more hours of light, finally retiring my parka. In short, spring makes me think of newness and change. At Chicago Athlete, we’ve undergone a bit of change as well. While you may not notice it by picking up the magazine, turning to our digital offerings shows our renewed commitment to being your turn-to source for endurance and fitness information in Chicago, both in print and online. We began our overhaul in March with the addition of our newest staff member, Bill Smith. Bill serves as our social media manager, directing all of our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram efforts. He’s the one behind all of your engagement with us through these channels – you have connected with us on social media, right? If not, we’d love to have you join in the conversation! Shinola

ADDS TWO NEW BIKES TO ITS COLLECTION

Shinola, a Detroitmanufacturer of watches, bicycles, leather goods, journals and pet accessories that recently opened a store in Wicker Park at 1619 N. Damen, has added two new bicycles to its lineup.

Earlier this year, Shinola added a women’s version of its popular Runwell 11-speed bike to its lineup. This hand-assembled bike has a lower stand-over height but maintains the model’s custom Shinola front rack and fenders. In March, Shinola announced its first single-speed bicycle, The Detroit Arrow. The bike is Shinola’s third offering and comes in three men’s sizes and one women’s size. This bike, also hand-built, features a Shinola leather saddle, cork grips, fenders and chain guard. “With the success of The Runwell 11-speed and The Bixby 3-speed, we

Big Shoulders Swim

SELLS OUT IN LESS THAN ONE WEEK

The Big Shoulders 5K and 2.5K Swim sold out in record time this year, fi lling the field in less than one week.

“It’s been going that way,” race director Chris Sheean says. “Three years ago we sold out in five months. Last year we sold out in five weeks. This year we sold out in five days.” The race, which will serve as the U.S. Masters Swimming 5K National Championship this year, takes place at Ohio Street Beach on Sept. 12 at 8 a.m. The race has become a popular event for swimmers recently, even those beyond Chicagoland.

“It’s listed by Open Water Swimming as one of the 10 swims you have to do before you die,” Sheean says. “I think there’s defi nitely sort of a tradition that has been put into place. The café is located in the Chicago Women’s Park and Gardens Field House at 205-209 E. 18th St. The Spoke & Bird emphasizes healthy food at a reasonable price and aims to be a bike-friendly establishment. The café has two Divvy stations nearby, is located along the only direct bike path to the lake between Roosevelt and 31st Street and intends to set up a repair stand on its patio in the future.

Vinson, the highest point in Antarctica. In May, he will travel to Asia to climb Mt. Introduces new Format

The Abbott World Marathon Majors revealed a new structure to its race series this year, starting with the Tokyo Marathon that took place on Feb. 22. Under the new system, the series will follow a one-year cycle that rotates its start event through all six races that make up the series. While this year’s AWMM kicked off with the Tokyo Marathon, next year’s series will begin with the 2016 Boston Marathon. All following series will begin and end at the next AWMM Series race on the calendar, which, in order, are the Virgin Money London Marathon, the BMW Berlin Marathon, the Bank of

SA Paratriathlon, a division of USA Triathlon, announced in late February that it has joined forces with local paratriathlon club Dare2tri for the 2015 USA Paratriathlon Development Race Series. “With the ever-growing paratriathlon landscape, USA Triathlon has identified the need to offer a mid-level competition platform for emerging paratriathletes in the United States,” Amanda Duke Boulet, USA Triathlon paratriathlon program manager, said in a press release. “Paratriathlon will make its debut in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and this domestic series is a vehicle where emerging talent can assess potential success on the ITU circuit and upcoming Paralympic Games.” The USA Paratriathlon Development Race Series presented by Dare2tri will feature four races between May and August intended to add racing options to

the national calendar. The series kicks off with the 2015 USA Paratriathlon National Championships on May 25 in Austin, Texas, and continues with the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon on June 21 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, the Nantucket Triathlon on July 18 in Nantucket, Massachusetts and ends with Tri Santa Cruz on Aug. 9 in Santa Cruz, California. All events but the National Championships offer a $5,000 prize purse divided evenly between men and women in each of the five sport classes. Dare2tri will also present an additional $500 to the overall series winner in each sport class.

All 16 POWERMAN events will count towards end-of-the-year Duathlon National Rankings for USAT members.

NEW SUBURBAN NON-PROFIT AIMS TO FUNDRAISE THROUGH CYCLING

The DuPage Cycling Foundation announced its creation in late February. The 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization aims to combine cycling and philanthropy by using cycling events to raise funds for community nonprofits in greater DuPage County. Along with founding organization Elmhurst Masters Competition Cycling, Inc., the organization may also support charities that use cycling as a form of fundraising. “We’re pretty pleased that we can enhance our community with cycling as our tool,” DuPage Cycling Foundation board president Rob Hocking said in a press release. “Cycling has a way of bringing people together, which is the basis for all thriving communities.” The premier fundraiser for the DuPage Cycling Foundation, the Superior Ambulance Elmhurst Cycling Classic, will this year feature twilight criterium racing. The race, part of the Intelligentsia Cycling Series, will take place on July 24, with its fastest races scheduled after 5 p.m.

“I think a lot of it has to do with the unique way the club is put together,” Scott Kummer, one of the founding members, says. “It’s not owned by anybody. It’s more like a co-op.”

While you may not find the entire club all together at one event, Flatlander runners do often run area trails together, meeting at Bullfrog Lake in Palos Hills weekly and hosting floater runs during warmer months. Floater runs allow any member to host a run on a local trail, giving club members the chance to explore the area.

Using Facebook as a hub, the group has connected ultrarunners from Chicagoland and the greater Midwest to each other, which is not entirely surprising given the nature of ultra clubs. “When I got into ultra running, you look for a club and you just join all of them,” Kummer says. “There’s a ton of overlap between groups. I wouldn’t be shocked to find someone in all of them.” Flatlander’s non-profit, co-operative focus sets it aside from other groups. The club puts great emphasis on transparency and making sure to no one makes any financial gains from the group. “There’s a lot of Flatlander shirts, buff s, hats,” Kummer says. “We get a quote, share the receipt with

Flatlander runners create Facebook events both for floater runs and for area ultra races, which lets others know who will be at which events and helps spread information. “Anyone can see that [event],” Kummer says. “Others will join the event as well, and people can talk about the race. Everything’s open to the public. No one owns anything. It’s not a company, not an entity. It’s a concept.” Beyond running, Flatlander members must contribute in some way to the ultra community by crewing, pacing or volunteering at at least one event every year. The group organizes aid stations at various races, including the Chicago Lakefront 50K and Lakefront 50/50 and the Hennapin 100 this coming September.

What began as a way to stay in shape for soccer turned into a passion for Sean Choate. After joining track and field his junior year of high school, Choate learned he loved running and turned his focus to that instead. He ran for the track and field and cross country teams at Knox College and now runs for the Dick Pond Fast Track Racing Team. Last year, Choate won the male 20-24 age group for the CARA Runners’ Choice Circuit and he hopes to continue to compete on the circuit this year as well while staying healthy after a hip injury and stress fracture derailed much of his 2014 season. Choate, an assistant coach at St. Patrick High School, also wants to help his athletes achieve their goals and strengthen their passion for the sport in 2015.

If you ran a race in the suburbs last year, there’s a good chance you were on the course with Eileen Skisak. Skisak, who came to running in 1999 with a 5K she ran for the post-race food, has amassed almost 600 races to her name in the past 15 years, including 70 last year.

Skisak doesn’t just finish races, however. Last year, she handily won the female 55-59 age group on the CARA Runners’ Choice Circuit and already this year has collected multiple top 10 finishes in races throughout the area, including a second place finish at the CNB Oak Forest Fleadh 5K on March 7. Skisak plans to race on the CARA Circuit once again and hopes to complete some triathlons this year as well.

Cycling Cross Training Climb to new heights

W

hile the best way to improve at a sport is to increase your practice and training hours, cross training can be a beneficial method to see substantial gains, especially when getting outside on the road is hard and your motivation is low. Building supporting muscular groups will make overall performance and the ability to stave off injury come race season even greater. But all cross training doesn’t benefit every sport equally. The following activities and training methods can benefit cycling performance the most: Running - The best bang for your buck, running can also get you outside to accomplish a good endurance workout effectively. Take it slow, though, as running tests stability muscles in your feet and calves. Running will help protect the muscles used on the bike from rapid fatigue, yet injury from too many miles pounding the pavement might creep in. Just take it slow, listen to your body and stretch even more than you would after a workout on the bike. 24

Weight lifting - Lifting encompasses many varieties of resistance training to build strength, and each type has its merits. Creating a circuit of strength activities can increase the heart rate, which will build more lean muscular endurance than added bulk. You can do kettlebell swings, squats, pushups, sit ups and dips for in a timed circuit training to keep your heart rate up while building added strength. Yoga - Power on the bike is the key to going fast. Your biggest opponent to power output while riding is aerodynamic drag. Cheating the air as much possible in an aerodynamic position allows for maximum power output so you can generate your fastest speeds. Yoga can help you achieve this goal through a combination of stretching and core strength to feel comfortable on the bike while you churn out the watts. Rock climbing - Keeping the mind fresh is just as important as the legs, making indoor rock climbing a fun and beneficial activity to add to your regimen. Rock climbing teaches and develops strength, endurance, balance and problem solving skills. Working

the mind while tired simulates a late race situation where you need to think as much you need to pedal hard. You can train your mind to accomplish this just like you can train other systems of your body. Cross country skiing - Quite possibly the best cross training one can do as a cyclist. It is close to zero impact, allows you to be outside in fresh air and works both endurance and muscular systems. Since cyclists generally don’t use much upper body strength, cross country skiing will help to build lean muscle in the arms and back. This in turn will help fight fatigue while on the bike during longer races or when racing over uneven terrain that shocks the muscles into submission. However, cross country skiing does have its downsides. Equipment can be pricy, technique a bit difficult to learn and conditions and terrain must be ideal. There aren’t many places to go near Chicago, but in the west and north suburbs there are groomed trails with even more in Wisconsin for a weekend training session. So get out there and mix it up and see your improvements this spring!

While he’s quick to acknowledge that he’s not among the fastest riders on a Challenge, that doesn’t at have a negative impact on his experience. “They break you into groups: A riders, B riders, C riders. I’m a D rider, the Delta Company,” Paddor says. “There’s no shame in being in Delta. It’s probably one of the most social of all the groups. A lot of riders like to come back to Delta because we know how to have fun.” The social aspect of the rides plays an important role in the mental rehabilitation aspect of Ride 2 Recovery. “The key to these programs is to get these guys and women to talk, and that’s the beauty of riding,” Paddor says. “We ride two by two, so we talk. You get very friendly with many of the riders, share your feelings on how you’re doing and talk about struggles.” In addition to his participation in Ride 2 Recovery Challenges, last year Paddor organized Honor Ride Chicago. Honor Rides, another program sponsored by Ride 2 Recovery, are one-day events with rides of varying distances. “This year we’ll have an 18-mile, 38-mile and 53mile route,” Paddor says. “All levels can ride.” The rides, which begin and end at Evanston Subaru in Skokie, take riders all around the area, including to the Naval Station in Great Lakes for those that will take on the 53-mile route. John Masson, a triple amputee, serves as the lead rider for the event.

ob Paddor entered the cycling world as a result of an auction.

Paddor, a long supporter of the USO, attended the organization’s gala at Navy Pier in 2010 and bid on the chance to participate in a Sept. 11 memorial ride with Ride 2 Recovery, a group that uses various cycling events around the United States to benefit rehabilitation programs for veterans. Paddor won the auction prize, and in September of 2011 participated in a 560-mile bike ride that began at Ground Zero, traveled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania and concluded at the Pentagon.

“It was the most emotional eight days I’ve ever spent on a bicycle,” Paddor says. “People knew we were coming, and all of the rest stops and most of the dinners were hosted by American Legion halls. It gave you a chance to be in Americana and support veterans.”

“He’s an amazing American,” Paddor says of Masson. “He rides in a hand cycle, propelling himself with an arm and a prosthetic arm.” This year, Honor Ride Chicago will also include a 5K Honor Run that will take participants through the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park along the north channel of the Chicago River. Injured veterans can participate in the events at no cost.

Since then, Paddor continued his involvement with Ride 2 Recovery, participating in both domestic and international Challenges: multi-day, long distance events organized by Ride 2 Recovery.

Runners and riders are encouraged to fundraise for participating in the event, and a variety of prizes exist at various fundraising levels, including X X2i Optics racing glasses, a Ride 2 Recovery jersey and a Ride 2 Recovery hoodie. What to Look for in a Great Youth Coach By: Chris Palmquist Navigating the youth sports world is difficult. Wellmeaning parents want the best for their kids but often choose a path that negatively impacts their children’s sports experiences. How can we choose a coach, team and organization that will best nurture young active kids into happy, competent athletes? Coaching for the Right Reasons Kids respond best to coaches who truly care about them as individuals. The best youth coaches focus on their athletes rather than their own record and reputation. They frequently talk to each athlete about goals, successes, challenges and feelings. Young athletes are more likely to feel optimistic about their training and competing when shown this kind of careful concern by their coach. College scholarships are wonderful but truly good deals are very rare. Parents should choose teams and coaches based on the quality of the athlete experience rather than the possibility of a championship or a scholarship. That said, some teams and coaches do produce champions because they follow the best practices in youth coaching. Others produce champions because of recruiting and poor coaching practices that leave many kids discarded on the sidelines. Parents should interview, research and be willing to leave if the organization is not good for their child. Certified It is common to seek coaches who were talented athletes, but this does not mean that they will be talented or effective coaches. Good coaches may or may not have been the best in their sport, but they show care for their trade by seeking coaching skills from certification clinics, membership in the organizations that govern their sports and safety measures such as frequent background checks, 28

A good coach has the youth-specific education to know developmentally appropriate training for their team members. This includes how and when to teach the sport’s vital skills. Athletes should emerge from their program with the ability to apply these skills to more rigorous competitions as they age.

Safe Safety should be the top priority at every training session. Coaches should include the strength and skill development necessary to help prevent common injuries before challenging their athletes to higher and riskier levels of play. Practice venues should be safe and coaches should provide supervision of all athletes from drop-off to pick-up. At least two adults should always be present when working with young athletes.

Beyond the Game Your child will look back on youth sports with wonderful memories if you can find a program that makes fun a priority and makes every kid feel a sense of importance and belonging. As they have their ups and downs in sports, if they feel like they are a vital part of a group that has fun together, they will rise to the challenges and meet their potential in that sport.

In 2011, a standard medIcal procedure changed erIc o’connor’s lIfe forever. after tearIng hIs menIscus whIle playIng soccer wIth hIs son, o’connor underwent 12-mInute surgery to repaIr the tear. the surgery went well, and o’connor stIll planned to run the Bank of amerIca chIcago marathon that year, untIl one week later when hIs health suddenly changed. “I was In the garage, totally and completely sweatIng,” o’connor says. “my heart rate was lIke 130; my normal restIng heart rate Is lIke 50. I couldn’t functIon. I couldn’t Breathe.” O’Connor called his wife, an emergency room nurse, who came home and brought him to the hospital. There, he learned that three of the four deep veins in his calves were full of blood clots that had broken away and traveled through his heart to his lungs, creating pulmonary emboli: artery blockages in the lungs that kill one out of three people who have them. Still determined to run the 2011 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, O’Connor returned home from the hospital three days later and found that his fitness had taken a major hit.

“We had a newborn son, and I couldn’t push him around the block without stopping to take a break,” O’Connor says. “I had just run a marathon in April.” Before his blood clots, O’Connor had been training to qualify for the Boston Marathon. It took him a full year to return to marathoning form, and even then he finished much slower than usual, his time over an hour longer than a Boston qualifier. “I was in bad shape and really had to fight to get back,” O’Connor says. “I was running 15 minute miles when I first

started and had to run/walk because I couldn’t make it through the whole mile. I was really frustrated.”

backwards, rest for 90 minutes, then run the full marathon with the rest of the race’s field.

Discouraged by his slower times, O’Connor switched to ultra running, where speed comes second to endurance.

“When you find something that people’s first reaction is, ‘What?’, they’ll give you more money, or at least click on the link,” O’Connor says. “It gets people asking questions, and that’s when they read my story and start to understand blood clot recovery.”

“I thought, ‘Let’s try long and slow,’” O’Connor says. “I did a 50 mile [race] and thought it was pretty great. I thought I was going to die, but I loved it, and that got me into the ultra world.” At the same time, O’Connor began to research what he could do about blood clots and discovered the National Blood Clot Association, a non-profit organization that aims to raise awareness about blood clotting to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment efforts. He began assisting with the organization’s social media presence and later joined the board. Blood clotting has come into the national spotlight in recent years as a result of some high-profile cases involving athletes such as Serena Williams, NASCAR driver Brian Vickers and Miami Heat star Chris Bosh.

“I like the idea of pushing myself to do something new,” O’Connor says. In addition to being a personal challenge and growing awareness, O’Connor’s run will also serve as a fundraiser for the NBCA. “Obviously to do our educational programming and awareness programming we need to raise funds, so that’s what Eric’s doing,” Fellinger says. “He’s been a terrific volunteer and board member in all regards but especially in that one.”

While O’Connor learned that he had factor II prothrombin, a genetic mutation that causes disordered blood clotting, blood clots can strike anyone.

O’Connor will do his 24 hour treadmill run at Run Today in Glen Ellyn from 12 p.m. on April 10 to 12 p.m. on April 11.

Several other risk factors, including obesity, smoking, the use of estrogen-based hormonal birth control, pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy, hospitalization, injury and immobility can make a person more likely to develop blood clots.

“[O’Connor] has been a customer of ours for quite some time, so when he came to me and asked what I thought, there was no question that we would support him and do whatever we could,” Run Today owner Paul O’Neill says. “We’ve never had an event like this, but we’re really looking forward to it. It’s such a great opportunity to gain awareness for what he’s gone through and a lot of other people have as well.”

To that end, O’Connor has dedicated his running to advancing blood clot awareness, taking on incredible distances and challenges in hopes of starting a conversation and raising funds for the NBCA. Last summer, for example, O’Connor participated in Worth the Hurt: an event that has participants run the entire San Francisco Marathon course april 2015

On the hunt for a new challenge that would get people talking, O’Connor decided to move his ultrarunning indoors. Having already completed a 100-mile run, he considered attempting to do the same on a treadmill but chose to run 24 hours and a minimum of 100 miles instead, inspired by Christopher Bergland’s book The Athlete’s Way and his 153-mile run on a treadmill.

“[We’ve] seen it in the NBA,” Randy Fenninger, CEO of the National Blood Clot Alliances, says. “Even people in superb physical condition can have clots.”

“It’s really prevalent and people just don’t know about it,” O’Connor says. “The biggest thing is awareness. Our cure is awareness.”

With ultra running becoming an “it” sport, the calendar steadily fills with new races, and even the established events draw ever-bigger fields. “Trail running as a whole is slowly growing in numbers,” says Rich Skocaj, race director of the Potawatomi Trails Runs in Pekin, which have been around in one form or another since 1999. “That’s been reflected in the number of entrants we’ve had.”

In 2015, ultra runners have several races throughout the region from which to choose. The variety is impressive, both in terms of the terrain and the events themselves.

HERE’S A GUIDE TO THIS YEAR’S ULTRA RACES: Potawatomi Trails Runs APRIL 10-12 | POTAWATOMITRAILRUNS.COM Originally called the McNaughton Park Trail Runs (due to its location in McNaughton Park in Pekin), this event was christened with its current name in 2011. The Potawatomi Trails Runs traditionally have featured 50-, 100- and 150-mile races. This year, however, the organizers will stretch the bounds of the imagination—and the endurance of runners—by adding a 200-miler. “We only brought that one out because people asked for it,” Skocaj says. “There are people out there who are just looking for more punishment. They want to see exactly how far they can push themselves, and 150 miles apparently wasn’t enough for them.” The trail itself, a 10-mile loop, is defined by its hills, with runners traversing 1,600 total feet of elevation change. “People think of central Illinois as farmland, but it’s been described that they’ve taken all the hills from Illinois and put them here in McNaughton Park,” Skocaj says. Included in the weekend is a 30-mile “fun run,” which begins at 8 p.m. on the second day. “For the 100 and 150 milers, it gets kind of quiet on the second night because the 50 milers are all done,” Skocaj says. “So a few years ago, we decided to start this race on Saturday night to put more bodies on the course and keep the 100 and 150 milers company.”

Earth Day 50K APRIL 18 | MUDDRUNNER.COM The Earth Day 50K, which debuted in 2012 and takes place at Veteran Acres in Crystal Lake, is mostly about inaugurating spring. “It’s nice after a hard winter,” race director Michele Hartwig says. “The trees are starting to bloom and it’s just a refreshing race.” Both novice and experienced ultra runners will be able to make the most of this single-track course, which Hartwig calls “gentle,” with some rocks and roots but mostly forgiving dirt. This is also an event with a social conscience—hence its name. “We work hard on promoting Earth Day with this race,” Hartwig says. “We try to keep the race as green as possible. We’re requiring everyone to carry their own water bottles so that we don’t have throwaway glasses. Every year we try to come up with new ideas so that we have less landfill at the end of the race.”

Christmas in July JULY 17-18 | CHRISTMASINJULY24HOUR.COM Who says ultras can’t be a hoot? This will be the second year for the Christmas-themed event. The one-mile course, located at Lisle Community Park in Lisle, is adorned with all manner of Christmas decorations. The ultra portions of the event consist of six-, 12- and 24-hour runs. Adding to the uniqueness, the races all start at night under the lights. “It’s very festive,” says race director Ed Kelly. MYCHICAGOATHLETE.COM

Hennepin Hundred

There’s a new entry this year on the ultra calendar: the Hennepin Hundred. Slated for Sept. 12 and 13, the Hennepin Hundred is the brainchild of Michele Hartwig, a trail racing veteran who also is the organizer of the Earth Day 50K in Crystal Lake. “One of the things I do is I’m a park district commissioner for the Crystal Lake Park District,” she says. “We went to a conference in downtown Chicago, and one of the conference sessions was about making trails count. I left the session and I was totally inspired.”

Taking place on an 800-acre tract of land in East Peoria, the event’s ultras include 30-, 50- and, for the first time, 100-milers. Says race director Jack Cook of the addition of a 100-mile race, “Basically, we got enough requests for it. It will be part of our 10 year anniversary. We’re not sure if it will be a one-shot deal.”

“It’s approximately a 4.25-mile loop,” she says of the course at Evergreen Lake in Hudson. “Contestants have one hour to run that loop. If you finish the loop in 45 minutes, you have a 15-minute break; if you finish it in 59 minutes, you have a one-minute break; if you finish it in one hour and one minute, you’re eliminated.” The 12-hour run is catching on quickly. Says Pieper, “I think it’s going to be very popular.”

Then this race, held at Evergreen Lake in Hudson and entering its fifth year, is the one for you. “We really are a grassroots organization,” race director Pieper says of the event’s organizing group, the Shady Hollow Trail Runners. “We try to keep a small-town feeling while putting on a quality event.” The Evergreen Lake Ultras consist of 51- and 34mile races as well as a 17-miler. The course is a 17-mile loop that features a little bit of everything, highlighted by a view of Evergreen Lake all the way around. “The trails incorporate everything from open grass to wooded single tracks,” Pieper says. “We go through pine groves and open fields with goldenrods that are waist-high. It incorporates everything central Illinois has to offer.” 38

Cook calls the course a “good mix of runnable trails and technical terrain,” with six challenging hills. “It’s an intermediate-type course, but there’s also enough of a challenge for experienced runners,” he adds. Organizers have tweaked the course slightly each year, but they’re keeping it the same in 2015. “It’s a good thing because more people want to be able to compare their times to previous years,” Cook says.

DPR Trail Races october 17 | desplAinesrivertrAilrAces.com Entering its sixth year, the DPR Trail Races continue to grow in popularity. Kelly, the race director, says that last year’s edition attracted runners from 27 states and three countries. The event also features a half marathon and marathon in addition to an ultra 50 miler. The races take place along the Des Plaines River Trail in Lake County, a course known for producing robust times. “The trail itself is flat, fast and favorable,” Kelly says. “It’s crushed limestone. We have a lot of firsttime ultra runners, and we also get a lot of PRs set.” The course is enhanced by its scenic appeal. “It’s really beautiful,” Kelly says. “It’s held at a time of year when the leaves are turning.”

Hartwig applied that inspiration to the Hennepin Canal Trail, a 103-mile tract that stretches from Sterling to Colona. She was taken by the both the area’s beauty and history. “The canal started being built in the 1800s to connect the rivers together for the barges. When it was a working canal, it had a trail that ran alongside it for the horses and donkeys to pull the barges. After the canal went out of business, the trail became basically a huge state park.” And, she figured, the perfect location for an ultra race. The Hennepin Hundred, which also will feature a 100-mile relay and a 50-miler, is somewhat unique in that it is a point-topoint race, meaning it’s not a loop that runners traverse a series of times. “We think that makes it more exciting,” she says. “You’re seeing something new the entire way.” Those sights will include a race-long view of the canal, as well as wildlife such as bald eagles. Mostly, though, Hartwig is looking forward to the competitive excitement the trail will provide. “The course is flat and fast,” she says. “We think a world record can be set at the 100mile or 50-mile distance. We’ve reached out to some people who we think are capable of doing [setting a record], and we’re hopeful we can entice them to come.”

A CENTURY. EVEN THE WORD BRINGS TO MIND IMAGES OF GRANDEUR, OF A LONG, ENDURING AND EPIC JOURNEY. A NICE ROUND NUMBER: 100. THE DISTANCE FROM CHICAGO TO WISCONSIN AND BACK. A century ride, in a way, is cycling’s marathon: six plus hours of pedaling circles, trying to keep energy levels up by eating and drinking enough to stay ahead of the looming bonk that wants to force your body into submission, to make it stop. However, completing a century ride on your bike is an attainable goal for even the most recreational of cyclist. Your body will hurt and ache, but with no pavement to pound, you may be able to push beyond limits you could experience in running. But where to begin?

Start by planning with time on your side. Pick an event at least two to three months in the future and work backwards. You need to have a schedule that allows you to devote at least five to 10 hours of training time a week on a consistent basis before ride day. You do not need to devote all of these hours to ride time, but after the first month your training should focus most on riding. A month before the ride, you should have enough time to do three hour rides at least once a week, most likely on the weekends.


Second, you need to own a decent road bike. You will spend a lot of time on this bike and will grow to know it intimately. From its fit and feel to changing a flat, it is your vehicle for pain and suffering as much as joy and accomplishment. Treat it nicely and it will carry you far distances. Check out your local bike shop and talk to a salesperson about your century plans. Focus on a good saddle and pair of cycling shorts with a good chamois, as saddle time will be a very important aspect of your training.

do not go outside of a normal meal for yourself. Trying something new at the last minute with nutrition can be the kiss of death for a long day in the saddle. Follow the same guidelines the morning of the ride, eating a full breakfast of familiar foods.

“If you are really time crunched, [focus on] core work off the bike and relative power and intensity on the bike,” Mike Farrell, Prairie Path Bicycle shop owner and Athletes by Design cycling coach, says of how you should structure your training. “If you only have 90 minutes in any day to workout, it’s much more efficient to train hard during that time.”

Bananas, energy bars and gels are all good choices for nutrition while riding. Experiment in your long training rides beforehand to find what works for you. Practice eating on the bike during these rides, as this task can be harder than it seems. In general you should eat at least one energy bar or equivalent and take one to two bottles of liquid, preferably with a light energy mixture in it, every hour. This should provide the necessary fuel to get through the day. Again, there will likely be aid stations, but some might run out of food and drink or stock different items than what you normally consume while riding.

Three weeks before your century, start to ease off both the hard riding day and the cross training, perhaps taking an added rest day. Keep up the long ride once a week to help keep soreness at bay during your century. By ride day you should have good endurance, power from the 20-minute intervals and enough saddle time to feel comfortable on your bike for the long duration. Also remember to practice your pacing and draft-line technique. You can do this on your long ride in a group setting. Most group rides will form a double pace line which will allow you to simulate how a century ride creates group formations along the route to allow for quicker paces. To feel comfortable on your century, you should know how to change a flat tire. Carrying a saddlebag with tire irons, a spare tube, patch kit and multi tool will help with this. While the ride will most likely be supported with aid stations, there could be long stretches where you may be on your own to fix your tire if needed. “If you own it, bring it,” Farrell says. “There are so many different scenarios that could unfold on the morning of the ride. Weather alone could dictate 10 different items.” Nutrition on and off the bike is important given the length of the ride. The night before, eat a decent sized meal heavy in carbohydrates, but 42

A popular century that has been going for a few years will have the local drivers avoiding the area for most of the day. It feels extremely relaxing being able to ride along with only fellow cyclists in sight.” In the end, this is a journey that you get to take with hundreds of others around you. “Before the ride starts there’s energy and excitement in the air, but it’s not intense or competitive because Swedish Days isn’t a race, it’s a ride,” Swedish Days Ride—one of the area’s most popular century options— committee member Beth Greenlee says. “During the ride there’s a sense of community and encouragement. We have a shared passion and goal. At the end of the ride, there’s camaraderie in the shared accomplishment, satisfaction in achieving a goal and a sense of, ‘Wow, we did it!’” Pick your century ride, set your goals, write down your training, nutrition and preparation plans and get ready for an amazing experience riding your bike a century for the first time. And don’t forget the sunscreen!

Over time, these contractions become shorter. As they become shorter, muscles and fascia become chronically contracted, forming knots, congested tissue, and muscle tightness leading to dysfunction, disability and pain. The health of muscles is directly affected by tightness in the muscles. Blood and lymph volume is drastically reduced in hyper-contracted muscle tissue. Tremendous congestion and inflammation accumulates in the tissue from cellular metabolic wastes, all due to ineffective circulation. As this stagnation progresses, the tissue suffers increasingly destructive pathological changes. DELOS THERAPY Delos Therapy involves applied systematic pressure to the entire length of the muscle to stretch muscular fibrils, leading to elevated vascular and lymphatic circulation, improving the vital health of the affected tissue, eliminating pain and restoring function. HOW WE DIFFER FROM... Physical Therapy Conventional techniques of stretching and strengthening are ineffective for hyper-contracted muscle tissue. Delos Therapy addresses the root cause of the pain by micro-stretching muscles and fascia. Chiropractic Rather than manipulating bones that may be out of alignment, Delos therapy addresses the muscle tissue, which is the force that is causing the skeletal misalignment in the first place. Massage Compared to Delos, regular massage is a superficial technique that doesn’t optimally address muscular tightness. Even deep tissue and sports massage don’t hold tissue in a stretched position long enough to be fully effective. Conventional Stretching Tight tissue doesn’t stretch, so during conventional stretching, only healthy fibers are stretched. As a result, flexibility often increases, but pain and stiffness don’t diminish. Q What sparked your interest in endurance sports? A I played professional football in the NFL for seven years, and obviously you can’t do it forever. It’s very hard to make the adjustment into civilian life without some kind of physical fitness goal. It’s hard to work out for vanity’s sake. I just started doing what everyone else does, and that is we were all born to run, and I started running. That later turned into doing triathlons, because you wanted to balance yourself. It served me well. I’m 65 years old and still kicking. Q Are your Ironman days behind you now? A You know what, I’d like to think I have maybe

one more left but it’s such an amazing commitment of time. A lot of things suffer, like your relationships with people. It’s a pretty monastic kind of lifestyle. It’d be fun. I’ve got a couple of them on my list. That was still the greatest thing I’ve ever done. I’ve done four of them. The first one was right before my 50th birthday in Hawaii. I woke up and my knees were hurting, my shoulders were hurting, my neck was hurting, I was 20 pounds 62

overweight and I said, “I’ve got to do something.” You can’t do anything to do it for vanity’s sake. I made a declaration: I’d like to do an Ironman. About four days after I made that declaration the people from Ironman called me up and said, “Hey Mike, you’ve been a good friend of ours, covered the race several times with NBC. This year we’re offering media sponsorships. Would you like one?” I thought it was a sign from heaven. I had no idea how to train. I went to camp in Boulder run by Paula Newby-Fraser. After about two days voted as athlete least likely to finish an Ironman and camper most likely to drown during the swim. But I got through it and then I realized that I liked it so much I wanted to do it again and see what would happen if I really trained for it. About four years after that I went to Lake Placid back to back times and knocked two hours off my time. The thing that was exciting was that assuming you weren’t a world champion distance runner or cross country runner, you can reasonably expect to get better as you get older. The bike is incredibly technical and you can never stop learning

things on the bike, and the swim you can get better at if you haven’t done it before. All that got me into endurance sports mode. Q What do you focus on now? A There’s a couple half Ironmans down the road. I’ll

start this year with the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K and probably go do Soldier Filed 10 Mile, maybe the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half. I belong to Vision Quest Coaching, and they’re the best cycling people in the world. We go out and ride all the time, and that’s good. Sometimes you start beating yourself up for not competing the way you want to compete or training the way you want to train. Why don’t you just do it for the love of it? Do a 50 mile bike ride because you can do a 50 mile bike ride, instead of doing it for a race. At a certain stage of the game we all realize if you’re looking for competition in your life, you can find it without another person. You can compete with yourself. Set goals for yourself and the rest takes care of itself. All you should aspire to is to be as good as you can possibly be for the genetics you’ve been given, the age you are and every once in awhile push the envelope but just don’t tear it.
