clearly been beavering away in the depths of the factory, throwing some of what they’ve been learning from their MotoGP programme at the 2017 machine because the new bike puts the GSX-R right back into the mix. And following in the mould of previous GSX-R’s, the new bike has a cracker of an engine with plenty of torque and you don’t need to be a horse jockey to fit on it. It’s a welcome return for the bike that began the Hypersports class. Realising our riding dreams is something we should all try and do. Farmer Alan Hall did just that and took a trip to the Mongolian Steppes. Needless to say, he wished he’d done it sooner. I maybe think it’s time to start planning my South Island adventure trip... Iron Run to Queenstown

anielle Cormack, Josh Kronfeld, Caroline Buchanan and Jay Reeve will join hundreds of riders and pillions as they descend into Queenstown for the Harley-Davidson Iron Run on March 17-18. There’ll be two days of free entertainment in and around town. Expect around 500 motorcycles rumbling through the streets of Queenstown to Arrowtown on Saturday morning, before the Arrowtown Street Party with

live music from the Buckingham Belles and the Mine’s Band. The party will kick off from 10.30am until 1.30pm Saturday 18th March, all in aid of Camp Quality. Activities across the two days will also include demo rides, Jumpstarts and the Show n’ Shine displaying Custom Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Boasting stunning riding routes, Queenstown’s spectacular scenery will form the backdrop for New Zealand’s largest celebration of Harley-Davidson.

Leadfoot Festival 2017

ith a great run of weather the annual Leadfoot Festival at Hahei was packed. For a relaxed day out it’s hard to beat. The quickest motorcycle up the hill for the final run was Cyclespot Group CEO Grant Woolford on his Husqvarna Supermoto machine with a

53.78s. For the first time the overall quickest time wasn’t a Millen family member. Former Asia-Pacific Rally Champ Alister McRae posted a 49.43 in an ex-Possum Bourne WRX Subaru. The event is run up Rod Millen’s 1.6km driveway in the Coromandel each year, and attracts famous drivers from around the world.

n the mid-1970s, a period many motorcycle racing fans regard as the ‘golden era’ of local racing, modern grand prix bikes could be seen in action at a handful of tracks around the country, contesting the Marlboro International Series. The first series, in 1972-73, was won by Christchurch’s Dale Wylie on a rare Suzuki TR500 Mk III. This was the last of the twin-cylinder Suzuki 500s, built as an interim measure before the release of the four-cylinder RG500s, which showed up in New Zealand for the 1975-76 series, before they were seen in Europe. That inaugural series also saw the world début of the Yamaha TZ750, in the hands of another Christchurch

rider, John Boote and the appearance of factory Harley Davidson XR750TT in the hands of Scott Brelsford at the final round. Despite the best efforts of Brelsford, the Harley was simply outclassed. Over the following years, New Zealand racing fans were able to see the very latest racing machines in action, and an international line-up of stars that included California’s Pat Hennen, fellow American Randy Cleek, a number of top flight Australians, including Warren Willing, Gregg Hansford, Murray Sayle and Jeffrey Sayle. In addition there were Europeans Chas Mortimer, and future World 500 Champion Marco Lucchinelli. To give local fans even more to cheer for, Kiwi riders Dale Wylie, John Boote, John Woodley, Stuart Avant, Paul

McLachlan and Superbike showman Graeme Crosby were in the thick of the action. To recreate some of the atmosphere of those heady days, Classic Action Motorcycle Sport Inc. (CAMS) hosted its annual Southern Classic on December 2-4, 2016 – and with the backing of Mike Pero Real Estate, attracted the most exotic collection of two-stroke grand prix race machinery ever assembled in New Zealand. The three-day race event originally started in 2014 as a one-off celebration of CAMS’ 25th anniversary. “It has proven so popular with riders and spectators that it has become a fixture of the South Island race calendar and is the largest classic/post-classic meeting in the South Island,” CAMS president Dave Reesby says.

hen a cloudless blue sky beckons, and the hot, dry hills of childhood adventure are disappearing behind you – accompanied by a serious growling from the twisted throttle of a Triumph Scrambler – a couple of emotions rattle in the helmeted skull. The first is adrenaline-fueled joy and the second is a poignant nostalgia. The last time I visited Kennedy’s Bush on the crater rim Summit Road above Christchurch I was about 10-years-old in the company of my mother, with her graniteloaf sandwiches and pockets of nuts and apples. The old stone shell is exactly as I remember it, now nearly 50 years later. The area still seems like another country even though it’s a mere fifteen minutes from town (on a bike), and the sense of distance and

removal is refreshing. But more amazing than all of this sensational weather and emotional distance, is that while traversing the entire summit road from Godley Head to Teddington turn off, I saw almost no vehicles and only three other grinning motorcyclists. Is there any other city in the world which has such an incredible road on its doorstep, and almost noone riding it? Arriving at the turnoff over Gebbies Pass, I was presented with a choice; left and back through Teddington and Governors Bay, or the long way round via the long flat roads of Tai Tapu? Well, aboard a Triumph Scrambler, run-in and going beautifully, and those sensational corners and views, the decision was an easy one. I turned round and went back the way I’d come. The stupid grin never left my face as I remembered every twist and camber, touch of gravel and road repair. These kinds of surfaces

are home turf for the neat, free-revving 900 mill, built for exactly this sort of terrain and gifted with suspension and tyres to devour it rapidly. If anything the rear suspension was a trifle soft for my 98kg, and we met bottom on a couple of corners, but adjustment was achieved with a couple of flicks of the wrist. While not being the fastest production bike on planet earth, nor a true off-road machine dedicated to dirt, mud and rocks, this is an equitable compromise and much more in tune with the riders of today. An actual Scrambler, worthy of the name. In a sullen glowing dark blue metal flake*, this bike has real street presence and the twin chrome pipes on the starboard side give a mighty salute to the 70s retro styling. Water-cooled and fuel-injected this 900 is designed very well indeed, in my opinion. The noise alone is enough to make you turn up your leather collar, don your Rayban Aviators (after trimming the beard stubble just so), pull on the KIWI RIDER

With the 2017 GSX-R1000R, Suzuki says it has the bike to once again ‘own the racetrack’.

’m screaming towards a blind crest with 281km/h showing on the digital dash. All I can see is the sky and a glimpse of the sea. The track is hidden, just out of view. The bridge at the end of the straight flashes by in a blur. The track drops away and the corner suddenly pops into view. I see the 150-metre braking marker but everything is happening incredibly quickly and... I bottle it. I’m squeezing the brakes hard and scrubbing off major speed before the sweep right into turn one. This was the scarily fast introduction to my first flying lap aboard Suzuki’s spanking new 2017 GSX-R1000R at Phillip Island. Completely new for 2017, the GSX-R is a bike we’ve been waiting for. And waiting... and waiting. Having seen relatively minor updates to the GSX-R over the last few years, Suzuki’s blue-riband machine offered value for money but it was looking decidedly old school when compared to its competitors. After a day testing the GSX-R1000R at Phillip Island I can tell you that, after a few years in the wilderness, Suzuki is back in the 1000cc superbike class with a vengeance. Don’t be fooled by the graphics, the 2017 machine is all new. Suzuki engineers have been working to a design brief of ‘Run-Turn-Stop’, which is their way of going back to basics and looking at the

elements of what makes a great bike. It always strikes me as odd when a bike is designed around numbers when at the end of the day it’s how a bike makes us feel as we ride it that matters. Going on good old-fashioned feel, I reckon Suzuki has nailed it; this is an incredibly fast and fun bike that’s going to scare your pants off and have you going back for more. Just as when I was 12-years-old, the (now big) kid in me wanted to know “How fast is it Mister?” Well, a smidge over 280km/h still pulling hard, with plenty to go. Suzuki now claims the most peak power of all the 1000cc superbike purveyors at 148.6kW or 202hp and the most peak torque at 117.6Nm. Suzuki has employed a whole host of acronyms that it’s shaken out of the MotoGP tree to help the motor make these top-ofthe-pile numbers. There’s SR-VVT, S-TFI, S-DSI, SET-A and loads more but the basics are exhausts valves in the silencer link pipe and downpipes, shower-type secondary injectors in the airbox and variable valve timing. Handed down to the GSX-R from the factory’s MotoGP engine development squad and called SR-VVT (Suzuki Racing Variable Valve Timing system – can you see why Suzuki goes for the acronyms...?), the new system uses a

sliding ball-bearing system to change the cam timing, giving good low- to mid-range power and a screaming top end (see the boxout on VVT for more on how this technology works). As well as the VVT, the rest of the engine has been given a thorough makeover. The old motor made great torque and power, but was near production limits and was never going to make the power needed to compete with its competitors which all claim 200hp. See the ENGINE boxout for more detail on what was done to the engine, but suffice to say, the new motor is heavily updated and makes serious power numbers. Phillip Island is the fastest MotoGP track on the entire calender and as such, makes silly-fast speeds seem... erm... not so silly. What I’m saying is, the wide-open nature of the place reduces the feeling of speed. That said, the new motor feels very strong. It pulls hard from low revs, picking up slightly harder at 6000rpm and builds quickly until 10,000rpm where it pulls harder still through to more than 14,000rpm. At this point the new GSX-R is extremely bloody fast. Does it have more peak power than the ZX-10R? No idea, but it’s extremely strong and the way the power is delivered is easier to use (for a 200+hp machine) and very well mannered. Where the ZX-10R takes off like a rocket from 10,000rpm with a huge kick after dragging itself out of a KIWI RIDER

he Triumph Speed Triple is the grand-daddy Streetfighter of them all, first hitting dealers’ floors way back in 1994. But in recent years the big grunter naked sports segment has had some genuine heavy hitters join its ranks. The Aprilia Tuono, MV Agusta Brutale, KTM Super Duke and the new Yamaha MT-10 are all serious players in the class – certainly capable of giving the Speed Triple a decent hurry up. And to be honest, while the previous model Speed Triple was already a seriously quick machine, it was due for a wee birthday. So Triumph has come out all guns blazing and given the 1050cc engine 104 updates to be precise, adorned the R model with top notch Ohlins suspension front and rear and also made a few subtle ergonomic tweaks. Triumph New Zealand, because of the goodness in their hearts, also added some bling to our test bike. The main additions are a performance Arrow exhaust system and a tail tidy. The pillion pegs and mounts were removed as well... I’ve never seen a more streamlined Speed Triple. The exhaust is a much simpler, lighter, single muffler design, being less complex and lighter than the standard twin muffler set-up. It also adds a few ponies... but it is loud. Very loud. To my eyes the Speed Triple has never

been much of a looker. The bug-like, forward mounted Praying Mantis head lights are just a bit much for me. However, there is no denying it is certainly muscular, business-like and is dripping with swagger. If it weren’t a sophisticated Brit you’d be forgiven for thinking Luigi had been to the gym. Certainly the fit, finish and build quality is as slick as any Armani suit. I like the new, red, rear sub-frame and the (narrower by 20mm) seat/tank juncture which makes it easier to put your feet down, plus allowing riders to get a whisker further forward for the turns. The updated 1050cc liquid-cooled DOHC triple has new pistons, crankshaft, airbox, header pipes and gear ratios. The head and combustion chamber is altered for better flow and a slipper clutch is added to the six-speed gearbox. There is zero doubt that the engine is faster than the previous model, being considerably more responsive and lively throughout the rev range. Our test bike felt stronger than the 103kW (138hp) at 9500rpm and 112Nm of torque at 7850rpm that Triumph has on the spec sheet. Yes, the Arrow exhaust must add a few hp, but the new triple engine is a gem with serious thrust and real attitude at all revs. It punches well from low rpm, has awesome roll-on grunt for passing and a searing top end, all accompanied by a blood curdling feral shriek from the Arrow three-into-one... ike Britton and Angela Bruce had been trying for years to get me to join them on a tour of Mongolia. They told me I’d love the riding, the people and the rural culture of Mongolia... and they finally got me

to give it a go. A big highlight for me was the Mongolian crew. First of all it wasn’t what I was expecting, to have a whole entourage of Mongolian crew looking after us. This was my first dealing with people outside the western world and I just loved the interaction. The Mongolian crew were really friendly, and as fascinated by us as we were of them. They liked to have a vodka or three with us, and even though

many of them didn’t speak English we still had lots of laughs. I really enjoyed their sense of fun. Our tour party was a moving roadshow. There were the guys driving several support vehicles that carried our camping gear, bike parts, spare fuel, beer, dining tent, tables, food, a freezer – just about bloody everything. As well as the drivers there was the lovely Boldera, our cook, and her helper Nada; Buyan, the mechanic (a Mongolian motocross champion in his youth); young Bolor, our translator who moved easily between the two cultures, and was really helpful bridging the gap between us and the crew, but couldn’t always be everywhere we needed him. And of course, there was Munko, our fantastic and funny lead rider. Mike and Angela

t’s Groombridge versus Macdonald all over again in the New Zealand Enduro Championships. Taupo’s Brad Groombridge was locked in a battle all last season with Christchurch’s Hamish Macdonald and Howick’s Liam Draper before he could finally break free of them and clinch his first national enduro title. This year he hasn’t had to worry about Draper as the Aucklander instead decided to head overseas to race in the Grand National Cross-country Championships (GNCC) in the United States. But Groombridge has still had to deal with Macdonald, albeit a different one this time around, Hamish’s elder brother Angus Macdonald to be precise. And so it’s looking like a two-man battle developing for national enduro championship honours this season, with

Cody Cooper had one hand on New Zealand’s premier motocross trophy right from the start of the nationals and now he has two – and doesn’t look like he’s letting go any time soon.

he reigning five-time New Zealand MX1 motocross champion from Mount Maunganui took command at the opening round of his title defence at the first of four rounds of the series in Timaru in early February. Then he extended his advantage to 13 points over great rival and last season’s runner-up Dean Ferris, from Australia, after the second round at Rotorua two weeks later.

It is a similar story with the MX2 (250cc) class too, with Takaka-raised but Takapuna-based rider Hamish Harwood, the defending champion in the class, enjoying a massive 20-point lead over his nearest challenger, Christchurch’s Dylan Walsh. The 125cc class is less settled, with Taihape’s Hayden Smith and Karaka’s Kurtis Lilly sharing equal first position after two rounds. With the series now at the halfway stage and a pecking order established, it means the final two rounds will be frantic as leaders try to consolidate and title hopefuls go on the attack. While weather conditions improved following the rain-delayed start to the day at round two in Rotorua, the track remained tough and extremely deep ruts made racing difficult and passing almost impossible. But Honda’s Cooper had all the answers for that. Cooper twice finished runner-up in the early part of Rotoua’s race programme, behind Yamaha’s Ferris and then another

Ex-World MX2 champ Ben Townley is back in New Zealand after a brief return to MXGP. We managed to get him to sit down for five minutes for a quick catch-up. What happened in Europe? I got injured testing some new parts in Italy. It was a couple of days after the GP in Italy, and we stayed there to test on a GP track. It poured with rain after the race and there were still a few really wet spots on the Tuesday afterward. I hit one of them and lost traction and hit my stomach on the bars – giving me some internal injuries. It was pretty serious so that was it from that moment on for the 2016 season. Would you do it differently if you could do it again? Well I wanted that shot again, so I don’t regret having another crack at it at all. I proved in 2015 at the Motocross of Nations, on a limited budget, that I was still worthy of a shot at it. The biggest regret I have is not sticking to my guns and living in England like the plan was all along. That is one decision that snowball’d a lot of other areas in my life and racing, and all through one decision when I look back at it now.

I’ve got a few things on the go at the moment. First and foremost since I got home from Europe was to put some time into Troy Lee Designs. There was a change of partnership from the original setup and at the same time we also took on TLD mountain bike and BMX apparel, which has been quite a large undertaking; it has been a fast learning process. I will also be an ambassador for Suzuki in New

Well, it basically means I’m not a professional racer anymore. I will compete at 10 or so events throughout the year, but not just major motocross events. I did the Burt Munroe Supercross, I’ll do a few motocross events as well as a couple of cross country events and an enduro round. I’ll also be taking part in promotional activities with Suzuki outside of racing.

It’s not often you get the chance of a spin on a bike owned by anyone like exWorld champ Ben Townley. But when you do, you don’t say no...

e met BT at his home track for a chat and a (very) brief ride on his 2017 Suzuki RMZ450. As we rolled into the driveway Ben was performing track grooming duties aboard his 4WD tractor. Ben’s personal track is in a rolling paddock with some large jumps, and it was all recently groomed so it was smooth with very few bumps other than the jump landings, or ruts for that matter, and mostly berm style turns – there are no off camber turns. Ben’s bike is largely standard but it did have a Vortex ignition and a Ti6 Pro-Circuit exhaust system. He was also trying a wire spring conversion kit for the forks but was planning to return to the air forks for the Woodville GP. Riding Ben’s machines is always a treat for an old hack like me. But even for me it was plain to see that this bike was nowhere near the trickness level of his factory-equipped bike we rode just prior to starting last year’s GP season. Although, in fairness, the engine felt similar – being very smooth, linear and certainly tractable in the worked-up pumice soil. It also felt fast, if not spectacular... the top end felt decent, while the low end was smooth KIWI RIDER

The DR-Z is simple, reliable and great for learner and progressing riders over about 12-years-old, or for farmers wanting a farm runabout.

am a great fan of small four-stroke trail bikes, and the Suzuki DR-Z125L, in particular, because of its robust simplicity. There’s plenty more going for the DR-Z too, it’s reasonably quiet, the engine is torquey, perky and frugal, and it’s air/oil-cooled, which is fantastic because there are no expensive radiators to damage in the likely event of a learner dropping the bike. The DR-Z is large enough for an adult to ride and it’s almost the perfect learner bike for all ages from around 12 years and up. While it’s not a race machine, it’s

surprising capable and will more-or-less go anywhere a larger machine will go... if the rider is up to it. I’m in two minds as to whether electric start is necessary on this bike. Junior tester Sean missed the ease of a button starter... however they add expense initially and again after a few years with new batteries etc. Besides, the DR-Z starts very easily, and is it really that much of a hardship for kids to learn how to kickstart a bike? It’s the purchaser’s call at the end of the day. This is a solid machine that should give years of trouble-free riding.

JUNIOR TESTER #1 The first thing I noticed about the Suzuki DR-Z125L is that it is a bit taller and bigger than my Honda CRF125F. This made it more difficult to stay balanced when pulling away and stopping. On the move it feels great and a bit gruntier than my Honda, but maybe not quite as smooth. The suspension seems firmer, mainly at the back where it is adjustable for preload. This is cool because you can soften the spring tension to lower the

seat and make it ride softer. It has a disc brake at the front and a drum at the rear which is the same as my bike, but it doesn’t have electric start and this makes it tough because I still stall the engine sometimes... luckily it starts easily by kicking it. Overall I liked riding the DR-Z and I did my first ever jump on Ben Townley’s cool supercrossstyle kids’ track. That’s a real cool memory for me! SEAN MCLAUCHLAN

JUNIOR TESTER #2 I’m 13 years old and I haven’t ridden for a couple of years but when I saw the new Suzuki DR-Z125L on the back of my dad’s Ute I thought that could be good fun down in the countryside over Christmas. After mentioning it to dad, then him mentioning it to the boss (mum...) my wish came true. As a bike for someone like me, having not ridden in a while, it was a great experience. The last time was before we sold my old Suzuki JR80. I used to ride about 4-5 times a year around paddocks at Vintage motocross events and the occasional trail ride. With riding the DR-Z I felt it was perhaps a little bit harder to kickstart than my JR80 but once underway the DR-Z smokes the JR, while being a bit more of a smooth ride. There is quite a difference between the JR and the DR-Z, with the JR being less than two-thirds the size of the DR-Z. As dad makes us do on most bikes when we get on

them, we ride them in figure 8s and circles to get used to how they feel. The throttle felt responsive in 1st and 2nd gear, I also noticed when I went for a speed run I could easily get it flat out in fifth gear. I found myself running a little bit wide in some of the flat turns, but in the turns where it wasn’t as sharp I was able to get on the throttle sooner as it was easier. I didn’t really do any big jumps but on the 30cm bumps, which I was hitting in 2nd gear, the DR-Z felt it bounced around a bit. Overall I feel It would be a great bike for me over the next 12 months or more, and I really enjoyed the DR-Z’s balance between size and power. The bike’s size meant I felt comfortable throwing it from side to side too. The power felt a little low on dry going but I don’t feel I would be able to control it in wet or powdery conditions if there was much more power. LEON SUTHERLAND KIWI RIDER

WHEEL ALIGNMENT & CHAIN TENSION

Wheel alignment and chain tension adjustment go hand in hand. As well as being a danger, a misaligned and slack chain wears faster and can make a bike surge and be unpredictable entering a turn and under throttle transition. It’s an all around nasty experience, so this month we look at a job every motorcyclist worth his salt should know how to do. Let’s get those spanners out...

f your bike seems to go around left hand bends better than to the right (or vice versa), your front tyre is wearing more on one side than another, or if your bike goes into a weave when you take the weight off your hands on the bars while you are riding along, there is a good chance that your rear wheel is not aligned with the front wheel. If you take a little time to get your

wheel alignment right, you won’t have to check the alignment again as long as you remember to adjust both sides of the chain adjusters equally each time you tension it. To start with, check that the wheel alignment adjuster marks on each side of the swingarm are at the same mark/ position on each side. Count them to be sure. If not, then that’s the first place to start. But, unfortunately, this isn’t always

a guarantee because manufacturing tolerances in the frame, swingarm and the adjustment stamp marks can mean the marks aren’t always particularly accurate. A good way to check if your rear wheel is aligned is to measure accurately from the centre of the swingarm pivot to the rear axle on both sides. These measurements should be identical. If you can’t do this easily/accurately, you should try the string alignment method detailed below.

(on most bikes the rear tyre is a lot wider than the front). Then go past either side of the back part of the rear tyre. You want to be able to do this without the string fouling on anything else on the bottom of the bike. Ideally, you’ll have a helper, or a couple of stands or stools to wrap the ends of the string around. The next step is to see if each outside edge of the rear tyre is the same distance from the string. If they aren’t you will have to

make adjustments. Often just 1/8th of a turn of the adjuster on the opposite side of the biggest gap can be enough to straighten things up. If your chain tension is correct before your wheel alignment, you will have to tighten one side and slacken off the other an equal amount, and when tightening the rear wheel put tension on the chain to prevent it becoming too tight when the axle nut is tightened.

STRING ALIGNMENT

tart by getting a piece of string slightly longer than twice the length of your bike. Then, with your bike on the main stand, or paddock stand, wrap the middle of the string around the front tyre. Turn the front wheel so the ends of the string can be passed towards the rear of the bike ‘just’ touching the leading edge of the rear tyre. To see if you have the front wheel straight, ensure the gap between the rear of the front tyre is even both sides

CHAIN TENSION

irstly, check your manual, swing-arm or chain guard for the recommended chain tension. It’s usually about 3040mm for a road bike and 35-50mm for a dirt bike. We’re after a Goldilocks tension here, because having the chain too tight is

1 as bad as having it too loose. It should be just right. A loose chain flaps around and can jump/slip on the sprockets, and a tight chain can put undue strain on the gearbox counter-shaft bearing and affect the rear suspension travel.

With an assistant holding the bike upright, with the engine off and in neutral, measure how much the chain moves vertically at the mid-point of the chain’s run between the front and rear sprocket. Now spin the wheel half a rotation or so and check to see if the chain has any tight spots. Spin the wheel another half a revolution, re-check the chain tension, repeat until you have gone around the full length of the chain. A tight spot in a chain ,where the vertical movement is significantly less, is a bad sign. If spraying lube on the tight spot and moving it back and forward doesn’t loosen it up it’s time to get a new chain.

Loosen the rear wheel axle nut. Use a socket with a breaker bar, or stand on the end of a spanner if that’s all you have. It doesn’t need to be completely undone, but loose enough that it turns easily with one finger on the spanner, and when you turn the adjusters they move without binding.

Don’t make this mistake. Chain tension should be checked with the bike upright ON ITS WHEELS. On a stand the chain will have much more play.

can almost hear you asking “What have bikes to do with guns?” The connection is in the number of motorcycle manufacturers which have been involved with the manufacture of firearms. Without a doubt the most notable is BSA (Birmingham Small Arms). Long before it became the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, BSA consisted of a collection of gunsmiths formed to provide weapons for British troops at the Crimean War in 1854. Other British manufacturers were also involved such as Royal Enfield, a company that featured a cannon on an early logo, and used the slogan ‘Made like a gun’, suggesting, perhaps, its motorcycles were as efficient and effective as a firearm.

which made bicycles first and then motorcycles, also began as an arms manufacturer. Probably the biggest producer of arms, and still making them until recent times, is a Russian company IZH Kalashnikov Concern. Yes, it is indeed the motorcycle

manufacturer which produces the AK-47 assault rifle. Its first motorcycle was built in 1928. In the 1970s and 80s they were marketed in Britain as Cossacks and Nevals. This is by no means a comprehensive list of motorcycle companies that have been involved with the arms industry, but an impressive number nonethe-less. The marque I have chosen to feature this month is FN, or La Fabrique National de Herstal, a Belgian company established to manufacture arms in 1889. The company moved into bicycle manufacture and then on to motorcycles. The first power driven machine was a bicycle with a motor attached to the frame. In 1904 Paul Kelecom, a talented designer, produced a four-cylinder motorcycle engine, which

at the time was considered revolutionary. Subsequent models featured the luxury of shaft final drive, and magneto ignition, with a maximum speed of almost 60km/h. The first model had a 363cc motor, the capacity of the four increased over the years to 493cc. It also gained a clutch, gearbox and enclosed brakes. The in-line four was almost free from vibration, which plagued many other machines for another half century. Kelecom left in 1926, and the company reverted to singles and twins. On the sporting front, FN machines enjoyed considerable success in endurance events. In 1926 several endurance records went to an overhead-valve single cylinder FN at Monza in Italy. At the same venue, only
