Bold, Aggressive, and Versatile I was born and raised right here in Noblesville. I grew up in a home without domestic violence or assault – it wasn’t something I saw, or even heard about. But when I was introduced to Prevail of Central Indiana, I was shocked by the number of individuals who are affected by domestic violence. In 2018 alone, Prevail helped more than 4,000 clients in Hamilton County. (Nearly 80 percent of clients are women and children.) Domestic violence and abuse are hard topics to discuss, so you don’t often hear about them. But at Tom Wood Volkswagen in Noblesville, we’re breaking the taboo and raising awareness for Prevail, an organization that helps families in Hamilton County. – Mike Bragg, GM of Tom Wood Volkswagen in Noblesville

As summer rolls in, I find myself slowing down a little. Instead of starting my day at my computer, I want to play in my garden. Instead of adding to my to-do list, I want to spend some time sitting on my porch with a glass of iced tea. I want to do what needs to be done but also spend time outside, with God, and with the people I care about. I want to enjoy everything I’m doing, work included. The other day, at lunch with my friend Pam Parker, I started talking about what that might look like. What direction would I like my life to go? What am I really passionate about? How can I make time and space to enjoy what matters most in my life? Aren’t these the kinds of questions we all ask ourselves from time to time, especially when gorgeous summer days insist we slow down a bit? Pam’s response was so simple and perfect. She said: “Don’t worry about it. It will all work out.” That’s exactly what I needed to hear. I felt myself relax as soon as she said it. That feeling of relaxation is so important. I remember a time, a few years out of college, when I found myself with two free months before starting a new job. That July and August I golfed every day and spent quality time with my parents. I didn’t have a care in the world. That summer created a space to reflect, to appreciate, to really live. I can’t go back to my 20s now, but I’ve been wondering: Is there something I can do? I’m opening my heart and mind to possibilities. I’m going to start by spending more time on my porch with a glass of tea — or maybe some of the poptails featured in this issue. Let’s raise our glasses (or frozen treats) to all the good things in life. Here’s to summer! Let’s make time to enjoy it.

soul space LOCAL EXPERTS SHARE SECRETS TO CREATING A RESTORATIVE AREA FOR WELLNESS IN YOUR HOME BY BROOKE REYNOLDS

Like a home gym, a wellness room is a space to unwind, relax and escape from the stress of the day. Also known as an in-home retreat, a wellness room can help you find balance in your life by providing space for meditation, yoga, massage, prayer, journaling, reading, sleeping or whatever else makes you feel relaxed. If you don’t have an extra room, you can turn a sunroom, bedroom or large closet into a serene space. Experts at the Indiana Design Center in Carmel share this advice on how to begin.

Let the sun shine

Natural light is an essential component to wellness rooms, said Adam Gibson, founder of Adam Gibson Design. “We always attempt to incorporate natural light, even if it means adding windows, skylights or a lighting control system,” he said.

Control brightness

Too much sunlight? Draperies can soften the glow, said Erika Reimer, director of business development at Drapery Street. “Layered sheers achieve a calm, Zen look without hindering the view and light,” said Erika, who suggests choosing light and airy draperies to achieve this effect. “You don’t want your eyes wandering and distracted.” Less is more!

8 kitindy.com

Add foliage

Plants release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, a one-two punch that purifies the air and eliminates harmful toxins. Stacy Molander, founder of Rusted Window, says greenery also can increase attentiveness, reduce stress and boost your mood. She recommends succulents because they’re easy to maintain and look beautiful almost anywhere you put them.

Save room for sleep

“Your bed can be the epicenter of wellness,” said Lauren Taylor, president of Holder Mattress, who believes sleep is more intricately tied to overall health than any other activity in life. “Sleep is restorative,” she said,

“especially when you get the right amount.” That’s a good argument for adding a wellness room in or off your bedroom — or adding a bed to your wellness room if it’s elsewhere in the house.

Soothe your senses

Don’t skimp on giving your space features that make it special, such as moodenhancing lighting and sound systems. Jamie Carey, director of marketing and business development at Premier Luxury Electronic Lifestyles, said the wellness rooms they’ve designed all included LED colorchanging lighting and inwall and in-ceiling speakers. “We can even incorporate special acoustics and water and air purification systems to add to the experience,” she said.

dwell well

Kara Kavensky of Adam Gibson Design says to create a restful space, you should:

1

Get out of the phone zone. Staring at the blue light can arouse your mind and make it harder to fall asleep.

2

Skip the nightcap. When alcohol metabolizes, it can wake you.

3

Treat your bed as a sacred space. Use it for sex and sleep only, not work or other activities that keep you awake.

JILL DUZAN WILLEY INTUITIVELY DESIGNS JEWELRY AND ENVIRONMENTS THAT REFLECT THE NATURAL WORLD STORY BY RIA REBEIN + PHOTOS BY CHRIS WHONSETLER

Living in Indianapolis, you’ve probably experienced Jill Duzan Willey’s design work. The interior and jewelry designer has been bringing commercial buildings to life in central Indiana for most of her career, and her passion for creating unique yet sophisticated spaces and pieces has led to the success of her businesses under the name Jill Duzan. Kit talked with Jill to learn what influences her creative process and what’s next for her in business and life.

13

“HELPING PEOPLE TO FEEL GOOD, LOOK BEAUTIFUL, CREATE A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OR AN ATTRACTIVE WORKPLACE... THAT’S THE ESSENCE OF EVERYTHING WE DO.” JILL DUZAN WILLEY INTERIOR DESIGNER AND CUSTOM JEWELER

FROM STUDENT TO SUCCESS

PASTIME TURNED PROFESSION

But success didn’t come overnight. In her first three years after college, Jill worked for three different design firms before meeting her future business partner, Rick Webster, and launching her first company, Designplan. At first, they didn’t even have an office phone, making marketing calls from the nearby Steak ’n Shake phone booth. But by focusing on one client at a time, their business grew.

She first learned artisan handcrafting techniques while on an Arizona trip and made pieces for herself. “And — you know how women are — soon tons of people were asking me where I got it!” Jill said. Her passion bloomed into a small business.

Jill’s artistic and professional journey began 40 years ago. Graduating from Indiana State with a degree in commercial interior design, she soon owned one of the most prolific Indiana interior design companies.

Jill has designed everything from casinos and schools to hospitals and McDonald’s restaurants; recent projects include the interiors for Heartland Church, Northview Church locations, Reis-Nichols Jewelers and the Fishers District’s Havana Cigar Lounge. Jill relies on strategy and intuition to design functional spaces. “When we create a space that has a purpose, we call it intuitive design,” she said. “Intuitively you know where you are and it just feels right.” 14 kitindy.com

Two decades in, Jill discovered another passion. “I was going through a change in my life and stumbled upon designing jewelry,” she said. “It wasn’t planned; it was really a blessing and a gift.”

In 2007, Jill had her first jewelry trunk show in the living room of her longtime friend and now marketing consultant Heidi Gessner. Now, Jill shows her pieces in seven retailers nationwide (and one in Mexico), including large jewelry stores, boutiques, art galleries and museums. She also sells her jewelry and operates her design business out of her studio near Geist Reservoir. “I love designing jewelry,” Jill said. “I have created thousands of designs, and if I had time, I would do even more.”

GLOBAL INSPIRATION

In spaces designed by Jill, such as her treetop studio, you’ll see Kuba cloths, amethyst stones and naturally dyed indigo wraps, with influences from Indonesia to Mexico to Central Africa. “Jill loves any found objects, whenever she is shopping or traveling. She gravitates to things that are unique or handmade,” said team member Jessica Borgo. Jill’s jewelry boasts natural stones and mixed metals, all from the earth and from all over the world. “I love to mix materials from different areas and cultures,” she said. The natural world is Jill’s biggest inspiration and the common theme in all that she creates, whether it be rooms or necklaces and bracelets. “When you look to nature, you see timeless patterns, timeless colors, timeless ideas. People go to the mountains, the river, the ocean to relax and rejuvenate,” Jill said. “When you bring the outside in, you create timeless designs.”

EVERYDAY ELEGANCE

What truly defines Jill Duzan jewelry is what her team calls rugged elegance. “Rugged elegance is every day; it’s natural,” Heidi said. “It’s the yin and the yang of things; nothing is perfect. It’s rugged but really rich.”

For Jill, it’s not about the piece but about the process. “I get to know the person and their story, and I learn how to integrate that story into their custom piece,” she said. “It’s a different philosophy from trying to match the shoes and the dress, like we were taught growing up.”

Jill strives to create jewelry that women can feel confident wearing all of the time. “I think my pieces are earthy but in a modern, edgy and beautiful way,” she said. “You feel pretty in it, but not too dressed up or overdone.”

Design is Jill’s method to solve problems. “I’m helping people to feel good, look beautiful, create a successful business or an attractive workplace... whatever it may be,” she said. “That’s the essence of everything we do.”

Jill designs organically, setting herself free to explore new colors, materials and styles. “I make anything from tiny and dainty designs to big and bold statement necklaces to layered sets. I design for my mood or what I’m feeling that day,” Jill said. “It’s an emotional connection that relates to my life experience. But everything is distinctly ‘Jill Duzan’ when I’m done with it.”

After decades designing, Jill plans to bring all of her passions and inspirations together. Beyond her jewelry brand, Jill’s newest venture is JD Style, a brand that offers artisan pieces for the home or wardrobe, handpicked from all over the world. Jill also does interior design consultation for personal spaces. “Truly, fashion and design go hand in hand. The clothes you wear are like the space you live in,” Heidi said. “JD Style isn’t just jewelry or interior design or fashion; it’s really a lifestyle.”

SOLVING PROBLEMS, TELLING STORIES

Design is what Jill does, but it’s the people for whom she designs that make her excited to wake up each day and keep creating. “We don’t design based on one event or outfit; the jewelry goes with the woman,” she said. “We pick stones that go with your eye color, skin tone, hair color, even personality — if you pick the right stones, you can wear it with everything every day!”

LET YOUR AUTHENTIC BEAUTY SHINE WITH JEWELRY INSPIRED BY THE SPLENDOR OF NATURE

Timeless and soft, refreshing and unexpected: The beauty of nature never fails to satisfy the human eye. Even in the fashion world where trends endlessly come and go, capturing nature’s ageless elegance never goes out of style. Jill Duzan Willey seeks to reflect nature’s beauty in handcrafted jewelry that enhances your natural beauty. StyleRiot’s Laura Walters has chosen outfits that complement Jill’s rich and rugged work.

17

ELEVATED EDGE Style inspired by nature doesn’t shy away from strong silhouettes and splashes of color. In Jessica’s outfit, Laura paired a brown leather peplum top with cream shorts and a fun orange heel. “The turquoise jewelry really looks fantastic and pops against the brown,” Laura said. This strong and stylish ensemble could be worn to almost any event, from a baby shower to a business meeting to a date night or lunch with a friend. “It checks every box,” Laura said.

TOP: Faux-leather Peplum Top, Kit & Sky, $41. SHORTS: Worth New York, The Toggery Resale Boutique, $68. SHOES: Adalie Woven Dress Sandals, INC International Concepts, Macys.com, $89.50.

“We combined earthy tones that still pop, like the turquoise contrasting with the orange shoes,” said Jessica, who is the digital marketing lead for Jill Duzan Jewelry. “Turquoise is a great investment piece.” While turquoise can be expensive, it looks great in summer, transitions well into fall and is December’s birthstone, so it can be worn year-round.

EARRINGS: Turquoise Bead on Gold Hook Tops, E0197, $125. BRACELETS: Hand-Tied Turquoise Bracelet, B967, $125; Four Sliced Diamond Bracelet, RB24, $885; Gold and Pave Bangle, JD03, $285. NECKLACES: Mia Turquoise in Gold, MTQ36, $185; Gold Vermeil Branch Pendant (round turquoise detail), one of a kind (inquire at info@jillduzan.com); Turquoise Mini Choker (hematite, moss aquamarine), A2041, $225; Single Sliced Diamond Necklace, R022, $438.

COMBINE TO SHINE Nothing goes better with standout pieces than tried-and-true classics. “I’ve always said it and I’ll say it again: A white button-down is a closet staple for every woman,” Laura said. To add some drama to Pam Kane’s basic white top, Laura wrapped the bottom of the shirt and paired it with a distressed gold belt. “The white buttondown, the denim and the nude suede heel is a classic look,” she said. “The jewelry adds a touch of drama, and it really lets Pam’s fun personality shine.” Contrary to conventional wisdom, Pam, a stylist herself, is wearing three statement necklaces and a pair of statement earrings, but she doesn’t look overloaded or overdone. “Don’t be afraid to layer on the bold pieces,” Jessica said. The “more is more” look works when paired with a simple outfit — don’t be afraid to play around with layering and combining pieces in original ways. TOP: JW Anderson, stylist’s closet. DENIM: Levi’s 724 Straight-leg Jeans, Macys.com, $69.50. BELT: Snakeskin-embossed Stretch Belt in Open, INC International Concepts, Macys.com, $10.93. SHOES: Banana Republic, The Toggery Resale Boutique, $22. EARRINGS: Turquoise Barrel Earrings (sterling silver dotted tops), E0288, $225. NECKLACES: Turquoise Briolette (green garnet, Peruvian opal, Thai silver), A536, $425; Graduated Turquoise (Thai silver, Navajo pearls, black horn beads), A9026, $825; Long Turquoise and Oxidized Chain, TQ213A, $525; Single Sliced Diamond in Gold, R022-G, $438; Thai Silver Choker (gray hematite, pyrite, gold and silver details), A9073, $285.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Dressing in neutrals doesn’t have to be boring. Funky footwear and unique shapes can bring warm tones to life. “This sweater is a street style moment: It has a neutral color pallet but statement sleeves, which are very complementary to Jessica’s body type,” Laura said. “The shoes are also neutral but unique and fun; they’re unexpected.” From natural freshwater pearls and cactus silverite to Thai silver and sliced diamonds, the jewelry combines diverse textures, colors and origins to create a dynamic yet cohesive effect. “This look is classic Jill Duzan: an eclectic mix-and-match look where all her pieces still go together,” Jessica said. “It doesn’t have to be matchymatchy, but it all blends together and goes well together.”

truth the cold

IMMERSING MYSELF IN ICE-COLD WATER GETS ME WAY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE. THAT’S WHY I DO IT. COULD COLD REINVIGORATE YOUR BRAIN AND BODY, TOO? In March, I jumped into Eagle Creek Reservoir for Special Olympics Indiana’s Polar Plunge fundraiser and stayed in longer than anyone else. How did I do it? Cold water therapy. I discovered the practice, which has been around for hundreds of years, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The alternative health podcasts I listened to told of how cold-water immersion could bust stress, increase energy and mental alertness and improve sleep. Even better, it’s free and seemed easy to work into my routine. So I freeze myself willingly. Five days a week, one hour after my sweaty morning workout of hot yoga or indoor cycling, I enter into my bathroom igloo. After a cold shower, my body is invigorated, I’m mentally sharp (no coffee needed!) and I feel empowered. It reminds me that when life gets tough, I can and will make it through, because I can do hard things. I can’t think of a better way to start the day.

22 kitindy.com

BY BROOKE REYNOLDS

Freeze out stress

Here’s how you can experience cold water therapy in your own shower. For each session, try to stay under the cold water as long as you can, maxing out at about 10 minutes. After months of practice, it gets easier to adapt, yet that initial breathtaking 30 seconds under a shower of icy droplets never quite goes away. That’s actually a good thing: A shock to the system reminds the body of its fight-or-flight capabilities, making us stronger from the inside out. Here’s how to immerse yourself, step by step:

1 2

3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Tap tepid water. Turn on your shower with the water at a mild temperature. I find it’s easier to get cold when you start with temperate water. Close your eyes. Before standing in the stream of water, listen to it flow. Take several deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. This warms you up from the inside and gets your mind ready for Step 3. Stand in the stream. Once you’re under the stream of the shower, gradually turn the knob so the water becomes colder and colder. Cool down slowly. Douse your arms and legs first. Spin your torso under the steady stream, focusing on a controlled pattern of breathing through your nose. Experience your feelings. Let automatic responses come. A racing heart is normal, as is a blood-pressure spike. Feel them and let them go. Stay put. It’s tempting to move away from the cold stream of water, but I’ve learned it’s most beneficial to focus it on the neck and collarbone, where good-for-you brown fat* is located.

Cool benefits

Wim Hof, the famous Dutch extreme athlete (also known as The Iceman) who helped popularize cold water therapy, says frequent exposure to cold is linked to a number of health benefits. Scientists have found evidence that exposure to cold speeds up metabolism. It can also reduce inflammation and improve sleep, focus and immune response. Learn more at wimhofmethod.com.

*A study published in the journal “Scientific Reports” found evidence that cold exposure can activate brown fat, which may rev up your metabolism. Brown fat breaks down blood sugar and fat molecules to create heat and help maintain body temperature.

Face it. Lastly, my favorite part: Let the cold water run over your face. The cold jolt of water is so refreshing and great for tightening your pores! Soap up. Wash your body and hair in the cold water or opt to turn up the heat. Wrap up. When you step out of the shower, you may notice that your skin is tingly. Gently pat yourself dry, wrap up in a warm robe and let your newfound energy propel you into your day!

EXPERT ADVICE

what is functional medicine? DR. STEPHEN ELLIOTT OF LIVING WITH INTENTION DISCUSSES THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CONVENTIONAL AND FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE AND HOW HIS PRACTICE CAN HELP THE WHOLE YOU.

The answer to the question, “What is Functional Medicine?,” requires far more time and space than we have here, but what follows is a brief primer, admittedly hitting only the high points. I hope you’ll find it helpful. Some would argue, perhaps somewhat flippantly, that Functional Medicine exists today in large part because Conventional Medicine has become increasingly dysfunctional. But that’s not really fair. Conventional Medicine has a lot to be said for it. Perhaps most significantly, Conventional Medicine is exceptionally good at treating acute problems — acute illnesses, injuries, heart attacks and so on. It offers a vast array of tools — prescriptions, surgeries and specific therapies — to address and heal a vast array of acute medical maladies. That said, very few would argue with the idea that Conventional Medicine has changed enormously and dramatically over the past 20 years or so. The reasons for this are complex and involved and not the focus of this brief article. But the fact is that a growing number of Americans — patients and physicians alike — are becoming increasingly frustrated with what happens at a typical doctor’s appointment. Today the actual time spent face to face with the physician (or Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant), from beginning to end, is very brief, typically around 15 minutes, with a significant portion of that time being spent by the practitioner on the computer, addressing the growingly burdensome and costly requirements of electronic medical documentation. With that in mind, it makes sense that a growing number of us — again, patients and physicians alike — have come to ask the question: Does it have to be this way? It’s not that Functional Medicine initially was born out of these growing frustrations with Conventional Medicine — Functional Medicine actually predates most of these changes — but those changes have definitely contributed to the rapid growth and acceptance of Functional Medicine, as more and more of us have come to the conclusion, “No. It doesn’t have to be this way.” Functional Medicine offers an alternative approach to the practice of medicine.

FUNCTIONAL VS. CONVENTIONAL — HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Where Conventional Medicine dissects the human body into “systems,” each with its specialists and sub-specialists, Functional Medicine embraces the idea that the human body is exactly that, one body, and that all of these separate “systems” are intricately interconnected.

What happens in one “system” impacts — directly and indirectly — every other “system,” every other part of the body. For example, problems involving the gastrointestinal system may manifest as a skin problem or a chronic sinus problem or a neurological problem and so on. It’s all inter-connected. Where Conventional Medicine focuses on establishing the “what” (the diagnosis), Functional Medicine wants to know “Why?” Instead of asking, “What’s the diagnosis?” the Functional physician asks, “Why is the body not working, or functioning, the way it is designed to function?” In Functional Medicine, it’s not enough to say, “You have

ADVERTORIAL

Irritable Bowel Syndrome,” but rather to understand what happened, what went wrong in such a way that you now experience the symptoms that we have come to call “IBS.” In short, the goal is to uncover the true “root cause” of any given medical problem. Where Conventional Medicine reflexively reaches for the prescription pad, Functional Medicine strives to solve health problems more naturally — correcting nutritional deficiencies, restoring hormonal imbalances, minimizing immune stressors, eliminating food sensitivities, avoiding and eliminating toxins and so on. ▢ It’s interesting to note that two giant minds have dialed in on this subject over the years. Hippocrates, considered by many to be the Father of Medicine, once said, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Twenty-four hundred years later, Thomas Edison was quoted as saying, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Both Mr. Edison and Hippocrates would be astonished to know how little, how very little, the “doctor of the future” has been taught about diet, food and nutrition. It’s a subject almost completely absent from medical education today. Where Conventional Medicine has become a production model of sorts in which increasingly frustrated physicians have become incredibly highly educated assembly line workers whose compensation, if not their very employment, rests in large part on the number of patients they see in a day, Functional Medicine embraces a slower, more measured approach. ▢ Understanding that ours is an aging society in which more and more of us are dealing with a growing number of chronic health problems, the typical Functional Medicine appointment takes time, frequently the better part of an hour.

▢ Further, recognizing that chronic health problems, developing and progressing as they have over many years, are rarely rapidly corrected, the Functional approach — embraced by both physician and patient — requires patience. Finally, where Conventional Medicine is focused on diagnosing and fixing disease once it appears, Functional Medicine takes a more proactive approach, focusing on disease prevention and on achieving and maintaining optimal wellness, vitality, energy, cognitive clarity, emotional well-being and so on. Sadly, health insurance today has become disease insurance, designed to pay not to promote health, but to treat disease once it appears. And the health care system has responded in kind. Health care, in large part, has become disease care.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Today, in the eyes of many, the American health care system is broken. I personally don’t believe that, at least not irreparably so. Is Conventional Medicine perfect? Clearly not. Are there parts of the system that work well? Of course there are! Are there thousands upon thousands of highly educated health care providers that care deeply and compassionately and skillfully for their patients every day? Absolutely! That said, we all — every one of us — can and must work harder and do better to meet the increasingly complex health challenges facing our nation today. Functional Medicine offers reason for hope that change, for the better, is on the way.

Creek stomp, glamp, take date night to the trees! Explore our list of summer to-dos, from DIY projects to sky-high adventures STORY BY LAURA TUZZIO + ILLUSTRATIONS BY WIL FOSTER AND RACHEL KNIERMAN

HOW ABOUT MIXING SUMMER UP A BIT? WE CREATED THIS LIST TO INSPIRE YOU TO TRY NEW THINGS AND EXPLORE NEW PLACES. FROM FAMILY TIME TO DATE NIGHT TO FUN DIY PROJECTS, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CHOOSE WHAT TO TRY FIRST.

2 GLAMP IT UP

Love spending time in the outdoors but short on equipment and time? Try glamping, which provides a cozy camping experience, frills optional. Noblesville’s WonderTree Farm offers glamping experiences starting at just $179 per night. Kristin Phillips of Indianapolis glamped at WonderTree last fall with her husband and two teenage daughters. “I’m more of a hotel kind of person,” Kristin said, but the added convenience of not having to set up or tear anything down was appealing to her. So was the friendly and welcoming staff.

1 PAINT A MURAL

Have a blank space at your house that needs a pop of color? Take on a creative mural project. “Start small and experiment” when choosing where to paint your mural, said Indianapolis muralist Megan Jefferson (photo opposite page). Before you tackle the wall, sketch your design on a large piece of cardboard. Draw out a simple design or even use a stencil to plan the shape you want your mural to take. Use a paint-by-numbers system, which Megan said is an easy method for beginners. When you’re ready to buy paint, head to Sherwin-Williams, Megan suggested. “They tailor products and offer helpful input for customers to complete a specific project.” For spray paint projects, Megan recommends buying supplies at Chromatic Collective, 6216 Carrollton Ave. in Broad Ripple, and staying safe by wearing a protective respirator, which costs around $30 at your local paint or hardware store. NEED HELP? Register for notifications about Megan’s classes and ask questions via her website. Find inspiration for your project on Instagram at @megsj1art. Megan’s best advice? Don’t try to be perfect: “It’s just paint. You can always paint over it!” jeffersonartstudio.com

All you need to bring along is your pillow, sleeping bag and personal essentials. “Another fantastic option was to order food from WonderTree Farm in advance,” Kristin said. Choose from a menu including locally raised beef, pork and chicken that will be ready and waiting for you to cook at your glampsite. “We just brought the beverages we wanted,” Kristin said. Even though WonderTree is close to home, glamping there made Kristin and her family feel far away from it all. “We could see other families on the grounds,” she said. “The spacing worked well.” And, yes, since you’re wondering, each glampsite offers a privacy tent with a composting toilet, eliminating the need for late night trips into the woods. wondertreefarm.com

A MINI 3 MAKE WATER GARDEN

Need a garden project that can take the heat? A mini water garden can offer an escape from the dog days of summer and will entertain your family until the leaves change color. We asked Christina Mills, who co-owns the pond installation company and shop Backyard Blessings with her husband, Marc, where to begin. Start with a container, Christina said. She suggested plastic options starting at just under $40. To prevent mosquitos from gathering, keep water moving with a pump; a small, 120 gallon-per-hour pump costs $35. Then add your own creative touch with plants and animals. Floating hyacinths, water lettuce, iris, waterlilies and “anything tall and spiky” create a serene little scene, Christina said. Add a tadpole or fish for hours of fascination and mosquito protection. You can find all of the advice and components you need at the Mills’ shop on Indianapolis’ east side. backyardblessings.com

Fresh from the Farm

Give the glamping experience a test drive at WonderTree Farm’s Saturday Farm Days. Bring along the kids to try horse and wagon rides, taste chocolate and baked goods, and enjoy the open pastures. At Flowing Well Park in Carmel you can skip rocks, catch fish and explore nature. The park, which reopened in April after a complete refresh, is an awesome place to meet friends and make a day of it with kids in tow. “There’s great tree coverage to keep everyone cool and plenty of picnic spots,” said Kit Creative Director Ashlie Hartgraves, who frequently explores trails and stomps creeks there with her two school-age children. While you’re at the park, check out the artesian well where you can fill up jugs with spring water to take home. Ashlie says to pack snacks, hats, sunscreen, bug spray, a change of clothes and plastic bags to carry your wet cast-offs. shopping kit

Shop with STORY BY DAWN OLSEN + PHOTOS BY RACHEL KNIERMAN

WHEN YOU SUPPORT LOCALLY OWNED SHOPS, YOU HELP YOUR COMMUNITY GROW Where you choose to spend your money makes a huge difference, especially when it comes to shopping locally. Toomie Farris, president and CEO of McNamara Florist, knows this well. In 2016, he moved McNamara’s distribution center from Fishers into what had been an abandoned industrial complex on Indy’s near-east side. The move helped revitalize the area and encouraged other businesses to set up shop there, too. During a recent conversation, Toomie shared some insights on how shopping locally (or “shopping small”) isn’t just about supporting a business — it’s about supporting the community.

34 kitindy.com

Know the difference between local and locally owned. When you “shop locally,” you’re buying from stores in your community. While many people take pride in doing so, they miss the point by heading to the nearest Walmart or Home Depot. Big box stores may employ local residents, but a good chunk of their revenue is going outside the community. That’s why it’s important to shop at businesses that are locally owned, Toomie said. “A true local business is an individual or a company that has its roots and employees and banking and headquarters right here — nearby.”

Get a true view of how local businesses support your community. Businesses with roots in the local community are always looking for long-term partnerships, Toomie said. For example: The president of a nonprofit always orders flowers from McNamara for the nonprofit’s annual fundraiser. In return, McNamara always donates items for the fundraiser’s auction. It’s all about relationships. You can’t expect the owner of a local business to donate their goods or services if you don’t intend to patronize them. “We get several hundred donation requests a year,” Toomie said. “We’re happy to help customers with whom we have or can build strong relationships to benefit both organizations.”

Recognize the value of personalized attention. Whether you’re shopping for socks, silverware or squirrel feeders, an Amazon search will show you 8,000 options. Yet few of those options feel special, Toomie said. At local shops, you can see, touch and experience a product before you buy it and ask questions to decide if it’s what you really want. Toomie compares the online shopping experience to that of a big box store. “You can spend two hours looking for something, then find out it’s not the right thing when you get home,” he said. “If you go to a local hardware store, someone is going to help you find what you need within a few minutes. They help you create the solution.”

“A TRUE LOCAL BUSINESS IS AN INDIVIDUAL OR A COMPANY THAT HAS ITS ROOTS AND EMPLOYEES AND BANKING AND HEADQUARTERS RIGHT HERE — NEARBY.” TOOMIE FARRIS, PRESIDENT AND CEO, MCNAMARA FLORIST

What You Can Do THREE WAYS TO BOOST YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY AND THE BUSINESSES THAT FUEL IT

1

Show support with positive reviews

2

Search the old-fashioned way

3

Play your part … with patience

It’s great to support local shops with your purchases — and almost as good to support them through reviews. Never underestimate the power of word of mouth. According to Toomie Farris of McNamara Florist, one of the best things you can do for small businesses is to talk about them. “If you have a good experience, tell friends. Post reviews. Do things that will help them get the word out,” he said. Small, locally owned businesses don’t have the marketing budget that big corporations do, so word of mouth and online reviews can help just as much as patronage.

For the love of local, don’t Google a category (e.g. “Indy florist,” “heirloom seeds,” “mechanic”). Doing so often results in pages of non-local businesses listed first. Instead, Toomie suggests asking friends for recommendations or even driving around your community to become familiar with it. “Look for storefronts,” he said. “A business may have an online presence, but make sure they have a physical presence in the community, too.”

Things are tough for everyone right now. For both big box stores and locally owned businesses, the supply and distribution chains have been disrupted. It’s been difficult and expensive to source things — aluminum, lumber, paint, even roses. Florists source blooms from farms across the world, which have faced labor and transportation issues. But when a local shop can get raw materials, it can be more creative, and more nimble, than a big box. The catch? Local shops may not have the buying power or the strength to negotiate. Toomie is hopeful, though. “The good news is that the demand for a lot of products is very high. A lot of incentives and government programs have helped, and I think small businesses — and restaurants — will recover very well." They're worth the wait. 35

Carmel Arts & Design District

The Arts & Design District is Carmel’s retail, restaurant and gallery district. With nine galleries and a growing list of international fare, the District continues to be a favorite Carmel destination. The second Saturday of each month is Allied Solutions’ Meet Me on Main. Galleries extend their hours, feature guest artists and open their doors for an evening gallery walk but the event goes a few steps further and includes craft stations for kids, musicians performing at multiple locations and live interviews with the merchants featured on Facebook and YouTube. After a year hiatus, the party really starts up again as Late Night on Main returns to Main Street.

Starting at 9 p.m. and going strong until midnight, Late Night features a big stage and exciting bands. Local restaurants’ patios are booming as the street becomes the city’s largest dance floor for one of the most popular events of the year. The District, with its balconied buildings, ample sidewalks and outdoor seating for diners, is the perfect location for some of the City’s most unique events and festivals. Where else can you find Supercars, Exotic Sports Cars, Classic Racers, Historically Preserved Cars and more? Artomobilia has quickly grown in popularity, and, in 2019, expanded its footprint to accommodate more than 500 of the most stunning and eclectic cars. Streets are

The Carmel International Arts Festival, an annual, longstanding, family friendly event, also features live music from local bands, a kids’ area and food and beverages from more than a dozen vendors. More than just an art festival, it is truly a cultural celebration and just one of the many ways that Carmel distinguishes itself as a worldclass city.

MINDFUL WAYS TO CANCEL BACK-TO-SCHOOL STRESS STORY BY AIMEE L. MORGAN + ILLUSTRATIONS BY SOPHIE KONOP

As summer vibes give way to fall-time frenzy, you may find yourself at the boiling point. As the mother of two elementary school-age kids, I get squeamish just looking at my family’s packed calendar. Between work, shuttling kiddos to practices and caring for aging parents, I rarely have time for myself. But I’ve found some ways to calm down and access my best self, and I’d like to share them with you. Try these mindful practices to reduce stress, sleep better and reclaim your precious life force.

Indianapolis writer Aimee L. Morgan is the author of “The Chaos Antidote: A Fable About Mindfulness” and its companion guide, “The Chaos Antidote: Six-Week Mindfulness Workbook” ($24.99 each, Amazon.com). An avid meditator and mindfulness advocate, Aimee recently launched the Mindfulness Academy to help others learn how to live a more mindful life. @theaimeemorgan

SPIRIT GUIDE

The GLOWY Daily Reflection practice calms and centers me every day. Download it for free at aimeemorgan.com. 38 kitindy.com

1 Wear mantra bling

Stop, drop and soul

When you’re ablaze with strong emotions, stop what you’re doing and listen to what’s going on inside yourself. What thoughts do you notice? Whatever comes up, watch the thought float like a bubble across the sky. Then channel your inner Elsa and let it go.

3

Sometimes we need a little reminder to take a deep breath and listen to our inner voice. One powerful tool is a mantra, word(s) or sound(s) repeated to help you concentrate in meditation. Some say “Om” or “I’m peaceful.” Keep your mantra top of mind with personalized jewelry — like a handstamped bracelet from Brownsburg’s Twigs & Twine Jewelry. Just Breathe. Sterling silver, black or brown leather, TwigsandTwineJewelry, Etsy.com, $68.

6

Feel tea-rific

4

Spoil yourself with a cup of herbal tea and notice the complex flavors swirling in your mouth. If it’s hot, let the steam mist your face. If it’s cold, listen for the tink of the ice. Imagine you’re a visitor from a far-off land. What would you tell your people about this cup o’ goodness?

Get in a creative zone

Read a poem that speaks to you or listen to a song that makes you come to life. Then grab a notepad and write or draw whatever comes to you. Become immersed in the experience and let your creativity flow.

Take four (breaths)

Go forest bathing

9

Don’t let the hectic time of year stop you from getting away to connect with nature and yourself. Even if you can’t escape alone, plan a night in a cabin or a day hike to your favorite hollow. Listen for the birds. Watch a butterfly flit about. Smell the flowers. Experience nature to release your stress and increase your happiness and creativity. Go ahead, hug that tree.

2

Write it out

The thoughts that may have floated (or sprinted) by during your “Stop, drop and soul” moment need a place to go. Sometimes it helps to write them on paper. I love this practice because, looking back at my journal, I often notice that what bothered me a month ago has resolved itself — and that joys from past entries can be celebrated as joys again today.

Scan your body

One of my favorite ways to bust stress and big feelings is to scan my body. This is super handy when I can’t get to sleep. Start by noticing the bottoms of your feet. Then move to your toes, ankles, calves and on up until you reach the top of your pretty head. #nightnight

7

Close your eyes and imagine a square. Visit each corner of the square with mindful breath. Corner 1: Take a deep breath — really fill up your lungs. Hold your breath for a count of four. Release your breath all at once. Listen to the whoosh. Repeat for the other three corners.

10

5

8

Make space for yoga

This yoga move is great for small spaces. Raise your arms out to your sides to form a “T.” Turn your palms to face the sky. Breathe out as you curl your arms in and touch your shoulders. Breathe in, extend to a “T.” Repeat until calmness is yours.

Comfort yourself with cushions

Whether you’re meditating or sitting on the floor with kids, a comfortable, crescent-shaped cushion can reduce pressure on your sciatic nerve and sensitive spots. Moonleap Meditation Cushion, meditationcushions.moonleap.com, $205.

After scoring these clearance letters at Hobby Lobby for $1 each, Jessica attached them to leftover pallet wood from a previous project. The black pipes are the perfect way to display prized baseballs.

Months before Blake turned nine, Jessica started collecting baseball-themed antiques and vintage finds. Starting there helped her visualize where items would fit and what was still needed. The inspiration is obvious. Blake is a huge baseball fan and always roots for the Tampa Bay Rays. Blake knew he wanted a baseball theme, but he wanted it to be a surprise. He slept in the guest room for two weeks while Jessica put the space together. He loved it! A year later, he feels the same way.

SHOWCASED IN STYLE

This wall is packed with visual interest that moves the eye upward. Jessica likes mixing antique finds with meaningful items like trophies and mini bats from a family trip to the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. The "B" was in Blake's infant nursery and the wooden and metal crates were found at antique stores, then hung vertically on the wall for storage. Jessica found old wooden bats at Goodwill and made the framed display herself.

GREAT CATCH

These antique gloves add texture and nostalgia. Jessica made stands from scrap wood, then spray painted them black. Blake loves the bobblehead of his favorite player, Blake Snell (nicknamed Cy Zilla).

ON DECK

Jessica knew Blake's thousands of baseball cards needed an organized home. She found the metal tool drawers on Facebook Marketplace, then built a wood nightstand around them. Each drawer is labeled for easy access and, as a bonus, it doubles as his nightstand. Jessica found the baseball books at Goodwill; they're a nice knowledge-building bedtime story on sleepless nights.

ENTRANCE GATE

When Jessica spotted this old metal grate on Facebook Marketplace for $15, she knew it'd be a fun way to display favorite baseball cards, pennants and a jacket handed down from Blake's dad.

SIGN STATEMENT

The large green sign above the bed grounds the space with its size and color, making a huge visual impact. Jessica found it at an antique show and it is one of her favorite purchases for the room.

PALOMA BLUEBERRY POPTAIL

Bittersweet bliss. Aromatic grapefruit and sweet blueberries cool your palate while a splash of fiery tequila warms your tastebuds. POPSICLE MIX 2 cups grapefruit juice 1/2 cup lime juice 1/2 cup agave syrup 1/2 cup silver tequila* Garnish: 1/2 cup fresh blueberries Follow directions for poptails on page 47. * A clear white spirit, silver tequila is bottled and packaged immediately after distillation rather than aged like gold tequila. Silver tequila works well in cocktails because its strong, pure taste can cut through other flavorings. Gold tequila has a smoother taste.

VODKA CRANBERRY POPTAIL

A classic throwback. Crisp vodka in tart cranberry juice with sweet berries and a hint of tangy lime will spark summer memories. POPSICLE MIX 2 cups cranberry juice 1/4 cup lime juice 1/4 cup agave syrup 1/2 cup vodka Garnish: 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced

DIRECTIONS FOR ALL POPTAILS

Use a 10-popsicle mold. Mix all ingredients in a pitcher and set it aside. Sprinkle garnish into each mold. Evenly pour liquid into each mold. Cover and place in the freezer for 40 minutes. Then take the semi-frozen popsicles out of the freezer and insert sticks. Return the popsicles to the freezer for 3 to 4 hours or until solid. If you’re feeling adventurous, drop a popsicle in a glass and add your favorite soda or seltzer for an extra punch. Enjoy!

STRAWBERRY MANGO MOCKTAIL

Quench your fruity cravings with this tangy combo of strawberry, orange and mango. POPSICLE MIX 11/4 cup fresh strawberries, sliced 21/2 cups mangos, cubed 11/4 cup orange juice Place sliced strawberries and ¼ cup of orange juice into a blender and blend until pureed. Pour puree into a separate bowl and set aside. Place cubed mangos and 1 cup of orange juice into the blender. Blend until pureed. Distribute half of the strawberry puree into the popsicle mold. Repeat with mango puree. Continue until all of the puree is in the mold. Cover and place in the freezer for 40 minutes, then take the semi-frozen popsicles out of the freezer and insert sticks. Return the popsicles to the freezer for 3 to 4 hours or until solid.

COOL TIPS FREEZE FLEXIBILITY Flexible silicone molds like Abozoy ($15.99, Amazon.com) make it easier to pop out your popsicles. WIGGLE AND JIGGLE To remove popsicles from the mold, let them sit at room temperature for 5 minutes, then gently wiggle the sticks to loosen your treats from the sides. To ensure the stick stays put, don’t rush the removal; slow and steady wins the race to intact frozen deliciousness.
