From the Editor

So, why the delay, you ask? We were abducted by aliens. Actually, it was something even more phenomenal than that. My sister Rosa Lee, our beloved art director, and her husband Damon, our beloved web developer, are going to have a baby! Yes, there's a Tiny Timm on the way. As we continue to wrap our heads around the idea of a new addition to our ever-expanding family, my thoughts bend now to new beginnings. Once again we find ourselves gathered here at our little wellspring of art, photography, and articles to quench your creative thirst, to pique your curiosity and, one hopes, to inspire. Every day that we look over your contributions and as Rosa so imaginatively puts it all together, I marvel at this urge toward creation we have. Like starfish, we regenerate and multiply. Our lives sculpt everything around us. We cannot help but leave the world profoundly changed. What you'll find here is only a sampling. We aspire to lay fertile ground for the growth and nurturing of great talents. What thrills me the most is that, thanks to Damon's technological savvy, KISSFIST has become much more interactive, more participatory. Readers can now expect a website with an option to set up their own profiles with email alert preferences. They can also post their own creative videos or comment on a magazine or vlog announcement. The idea is that KISSFIST is to move beyond the parameters of any single media. Just as we'd like to provide a forum for many perspectives, all drawn by the common purpose of expressing whatever makes us passionate, we'd like to remain as open as possible to many forms of expression. As we unroll these new features, we hope to read your thoughts and suggestions. You can always send us an email at info@kiss-fist.com. We're looking forward to it. One last thing, speaking of interactivity, in this our sixth issue you'll find links to online articles, websites, and advice on everything from how to pursue a healthier lifestyle, to how to purchase some hot new books on the market, or how you can contribute to the fight against breast cancer, or even how best to survive in this difficult economy. It's taken some time and effort to put this one together but I hope you'll agree that it was well worth the effort. So, without further ado, Reader, read on...

ABOuT SEAN FOR SEAN IS A DEAF MUSICIAN AND A SONGWRITER “I’m an artist, I enjoy creating ideas for videos, painting wacky pictures, but first and foremost I’m a musician and songwriter.” SEAN IS A DRUMMER “I received my first drum set when I was 5 years old. I’ve been drumming ever since.” SEAN WAS FEATURED ON CNN.COM “One of my proudest media moments was being featured on CNN.com’s “Young People Who Rock” hosted by Nicole Lapin, and yes I was nervous swiveling in the chair.” SEAN IS GRATEFUL “There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m thankful I found a career in the music business, and wanting to create opportunities for other deaf and hard-of-hearing artists is something I am devoted to with D-PAN. This would not be possible without my fans and supporters, THANK YOU!” SEAN IS ENGAGED “I have been with the same girlfriend for 6 years, and I still wonder how she puts up with me.”

My years of experience in traveling throughout the world guide my inspiration about the value of color, which changes every hour everyday. My perception of color is that the value of the primary colors change into varieties of colors as a “Meditation Myth.” High or strong colors which define

I do photography. I paint. I am a very visual person, an artist, and I am hard of hearing. I would not change a thing in my life. I have had a lot of pain growing up because of my hearing loss, both physical and emotional, as well as psychological. I think the experiences we all acquire in our lives put the puzzle together of who we become.

I love taking pictures of nature, weddings, and taking senior pictures. The best part is trying to figure out how to take a quality photo. I am still learning because there is always something new for me to experience everyday. I hope to set up my own photography business but that’s for later.

Born and raised in California, I attended RIT for Illustration and MSSE (Secondary Education). Currently I reside in New York and I’m a freelance illustrator and art teacher although I’m currently not teaching now. I’m obsessed with black lines, long necks and stoic expressions. Lucian Freud and Modigliani mainly influence my work as they paint mainly portraits of people and objects in weird juxtapositions. Most importantly, their work depicts someone or an object that is held dear to them.

My favorite thing about this medium is, you are working on the surface with the aim and hope of something beautiful, and interestingly enough what often manifests is the person’s inner landscape, nuance of their personality not necessarily seen in the light of day, the shadow and recesses of the person’s psyche often come into play.

Deaf Writer from California

J. Parrish Lewis has recently self-published his first novel, titled, “The Goblin Road and his book was featured on The Foothills Sun-Gazette newspaper.

KISSFIST WRITING

The characters in his book are strongly influenced by his youth where he and his brothers seek adventures in the dogwood forests near home in Maryland. Currently, he lives in California with his wife and he spends most of his days, writing and enjoying hazelnut, captioned movies, and walking his dog.

J. Parrish Lewis is a deaf writer living in Central California. He has recently self-published his first novel, titled The Goblin Road.

thegoblinroad.com

Synopsis Ruarc and his little brother Aidan are playing knockstones on the floor long after they both should have been in bed when a curious creature of light and flame appears and violently steals Aidan away. His parents injured in the attack, young Ruarc must strike out on a path to retrieve his brother. Armed only with the fantastical stories of his grandfather, he chooses The Goblin Road. Ruarc’s choice leads him to newfound friends but also through dangerous obstacles and as the Goblin Road snakes through the territory of longforgotten magical creatures: from loyal brùnaidhs and gatekeeper trolls, to menacing goblins, blackhearted pixies, and worse. As this unlikely hero struggles onward, he will be troubled by doubt. Does he have the strength to meet this road’s challenges? Can he trust in its mysterious architects? Will he live up to Grandfather Uilliam’s expectations? Are the fortitude of friendship and the bond of brotherhood enough to see him through? This story frightens with its hardships, surprises with its revelations, and entertains with its imaginative universe, but ultimately it tells the tale of the lengths that one stouthearted boy is willing to go to for his friends, for his brother, and for himself.

The biggest threat to your financial security are: RETIREMENT Almost half of Americans have saved less than $50,000 (46%), and 15% say they have saved nothing towards retirement. DISABILITY

H

ouseholds saying they need more insurance own enough life insurance to re-

place their income for only 2.8 years. Life insurance surpassed all other sources of financial assets or income that Americans expect to use to help pay bills and to maintain their lifestyle if a primary wage earner dies. SOLUTION? Protect yourself with an All-In-One solution. Many people do not know that there is a solution where you can protect yourself from all the above with one affordable premium. The retirement portion is especially powerful because of the built in principal protection. A portion of your premium is invested in the S&P 500 (Top 500 companies in the country) and guaranteed to never lose your principal regardless of the market performance. The remaining premium pays for Disability, to help pay bills if you cannot work. Protection against Chronic, Critical or Terminal Illness if you get sick and finally Life Insurance to protect your loved ones. Think about if you had started 3 years ago? Your retirement would be safely sound today.

45% of 40 year olds will experience a disability during their working years that will last 90 days or more. 80% of today’s 20 year olds will experience a disability that will last 90 days or more before age 65. CHRONIC, CRITICAL AND TERMINAL ILLINESS In 2009, 1.2 million people will have heart attacks, and about 500,000 of them will die. At age 65, the odds are nearly 1 in 2 that you will require nursing home services for at least 2.5 years. PREMATURE DEATH More than 1 in 4 men and 1 in 3 women have no life insurance coverage at all.

CHEF MATT KRUEGER

Matthew Krueger, a deaf chef, was born and raised in Michigan City, Indiana. His love for cooking began at a very early age by convincing his mom to let him create a surprise dish without using a recipe for his family. It was a peanut butter and green mint jelly casserole! Fortunately, his dad and brothers “raved” how good his dish was, and from then on, his passion for cooking was forever embedded in his soul.

However, it was another 25 years, two college degrees and a career in student development and residential programs before he “re-discovered” his passion in cooking. He pursued further by enrolling in the Hospitality Administration program at Ivy Tech Community College. During his tenure there, he was given the opportunity to visit Southern France and Paris for two weeks in summer of 2004 as part of the program’s international studies program. The trip was enriching as well as a “mind and palate blowing” experience. Matt started his personal chef service in October 2003 by providing an on-site catering service for a wedding dinner reception for 125 guests. It was a great success and since then, Matt continued to strive for exceptional services to his clients. In May 2006, Matt graduated with honors in culinary arts. Instead of continuing personal chef services part-time, Matt started a full-time business with the emphasis on providing exceptional service. Hence, Exceptional Personal Chef Services, LLC was established. Matt is married to Brandi and has three young sons: Austin, Evan and Nicholas. He lives in the Castleton area of Indianapolis, but serves anywhere in Indiana and USA.
