The need Artist’s impression of a KISC’s new campus

KISC has been in need of a new site for many years due to the constant expansion and an aspiration towards long term property security. KISC has already had to relocate several times which makes investing into a property difficult and insecure. In February 2016 KISC had to vacate its sports site, which included: the covered basketball court (also used as an emergency shelter in the earthquake and provided protection for over 250 members of the community), the futsal pitch and parking for staff and students.

Since then KISC has had to have P.E. classes on the roof of the school which does not provide enough space, is disturbing to classes below, and is especially inconvenient in inclement weather. The current KISC property, a converted carpet factory, does not provide enough space to accommodate both Primary and Secondary schools and administrative offices, resulting in the organization having to split between two separate properties. The classrooms are small, with barely room to fit classes of 22 students and no room for extra activities.

The solution

THE NEW, LARGER SITE WILL ENABLE KISC TO INCREASE ITS STUDENT POPULATION FROM 220 TO 300, WHILE ABBS WILL BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE 75, FROM THE EXISTING 45 CHILDREN.

KISC and KISC EQUIP, the Nepali teacher training programme, will be relocating to a new site, 7km south of the existing property. HDCS, the Nepali NGO that operates KISC, will also move to the new site and they will bring with them one of the branches of ABBS, a special needs school for around 45 Nepali children, who are currently located at the HDCS’ headquarters. The new site is 2.83 acres and will be developed to provide earthquake-proof, purpose-built accommodation and renovated buildings for the four projects. Centerpiece to the campus development will be a sports field overlooking the valley with views towards the Himalayas. Being located outside of the city, the air quality will be significantly better for staff and students. The rent paid for the 25-year lease will also be significantly cheaper, at 30% of the current rental bill. HDCS and KISC will merge a number of operational departments which will lead to further operational cost reductions.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY SERVICES (HDCS) established in 1991, is a Christian NGO that works in health, education, and community development in Nepal. Projects are mostly located outside the Kathmandu Valley in order to provide services to people with low income, who have limited access to the care and opportunities they need.

ASHA BAL BIKAS SEWA (ABBS) serves about hundred children with disabilities through its day care centres at three different places: Jorpati and Karya Binayak in Kathmandu and Baratpur in Chitwan. These centres help the children by teaching them daily living activities and try to develop them physically and mentally through different therapies. The focus of the project is to help children with physical and learning disabilities in developing learning skills that will make them independent and self-sufficient, and able to integrate in the community.

6 K A T H M A N D U I N T E R N AT I O N A L STUDY CENTRE (KISC) is a K-13 international school in Nepal with both Middle States Association (MSA, American) and Cambridge I n t e r n a t i o n a l Examinations (British) accreditations. Established by United Mission to Nepal (UMN) and International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in 1987, KISC has become a reputed international Christian school in Nepal. In 2007, the Nepali NGO, Human Development and Community Services (HDCS), was awarded the ownership of KISC by the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Education.

KISC EDUCATION Q U A L I T Y I M P R OV E M E N T PROGRAMME (EQUIP) was established in 2007 and it shares the vision of the KISC community to bring about transformational change in Nepal by improving education in rural areas. KISC EQUIP continues to work with around 25 government, community and private schools in rural and urban areas of Nepal.

Cost estimate The estimates based on the draft design, bring the whole campus development cost to US$3,300,000 (please see pg.6 for a detailed budget). Funds available in the Building Fund are roughly $700,000*. Hence, there is a significant need for more funds. Loan facilities are an option but this will lead to significant fee increases for the students, the majority of whom come from mission families volunteering in Nepal.

Please consider making a donation. Details on how to donate to our building fund are on page 2. Donations will go to the Capital Costs of the project and will not be used towards the operational costs of HDCS, KISC, EQUIP or ABBS, all of whom operate from fee income or other donations.

Matthew 14 tells of the miracle of the ‘Feeding of the 5,000’. A boy offered what he had, 5 loaves and 2 fish. That’s not much when you consider the number of people that needed feeding. But in Jesus’ hands it became so much more. “Bring them here to me,” Jesus said. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Our offering, or donation, may be small in comparison to the target but in the hands of the Creator God, it can become so much more. Whether you choose to donate to the work of KISC, your local church, the child you sponsor, don’t hold back because you think it is not enough. God can take a humble offering and do incredible things. Thank you for reading this brochure and taking an interest in this project. We would appreciate any support you are able to give, whether in the form of a donation, your prayers or a volunteer work at KISC.
