The Typographic Circles’ Circular Supplement -Designed for Life Edition 03# Rian Hughes

Rian Hughes is "One of the most successful and prolific designer/illustrators of the past 20 years" [Roger Sabin, Eye magazine]. Rian studied at the LCP in London before briefly working for an advertising agency, i-D magazine, Smash Hits magazine and a series of record sleeve design companies. He has worked in design, illustration, advertising and publishing on many projects covering music, exhibitions and books, and drawn comics for many years working with people such as Grant Morrison and Paul Gravett. He is the author of numerous books, of which ‘Cult-ture: Ideas can be Dangerous’ and ‘Lifestyle Illustrations of the 60s’ are the latest. He also designs his own typefaces and runs devicefonts.co.uk. He spoke at JWT for the Typographic Circle, discussing his lettering and logo designs for clients such as Marvel Comics (X-Men) and DC Comics (Batman), and the genesis of some of his most popular fonts. Rian has designed CDs and vinyl sleeves for indie labels such as Transient and Automatic as well as mainstream acts like Geri Halliwell, with whom he recently collaborated as illustrator on a series of six children’s books. His advertising typography and illustration earned a Campaign Press Awards Silver in 1996 and a Merit Award from the New York Art Director’s Club in 2000.
