Leeds College of Art Graduation 2012

Brief

Considerations

Clarendon BT Light

Design the promotional material for the Leeds College of Art Graduation Ceremony.

There are certain brand guidelines that can limit designs. The colour has to compliment current promotional material, and the font used should be Clarendon or Helvetica (for smaller type).

Background LCA hold their graduation at Leeds Town Hall in the Victoria Hall in November. Graduation is a special occasion. It is a time to celebrate all the hard work put into successfully achieving a degree It is also (for most people) a point in life that signifies the end of education and the beginning of going into the real world, with the skills set needed to get a job you have worked so hard for.

The key messages of the LCA also has to be taken into consideration, with them wanting to be seen as an establishment with high quality work and a reputation for excellence and strong graduates.

Helvetica Neue

Consistency of the visual identity must be apparent between all the promotional graduation publicity material, and the tone of voice should be kept friendly but formal.

It is an honour that doesn’t just make yourself proud, but also your family and friends who have all been there to support you.

Concept Graduation is a special occasion. It is a time to celebrate all the hard work put into successfully achieving a degree It is also (for most people) a point in life that signifies the end of education and the beginning of going into the real world, with the skills set needed to get a job you have worked so hard for. It is an honour that doesn’t just make yourself proud, but also your family and friends who have all been there to support you. The promotional material for LCA Graduation needs a revamp, to make them look more of a prestigious keepsake, as a reminder of their special day. I also want to inspire the graduands, who are worried about going into the real world, through the use of quotes from successful artists and designers.

Certificate Wallet, Graduation Ceremony Ticket and Ceremony Information Ticket These three pieces of design, are what would be kept by the student/parent as a reminder of the Graduation Ceremony, so they needed to have a quality to them that made them look and feel special. The graduation ticket would be used as a pass into the Town Hall venue, with the block of metallic ink giving a ‘prestige’ feel to it. This reflects the occasion and venue. The ceremony information ticket, tells the students what to do during the ceremony when collecting their certificate. It contains their name and course details on the front and the information on the reverse. The certficiate wallet has two dye cut slits that the ceremony information ticket can be slotted into, which means the students’ name can be easily read from the outside, without having to open the wallet and see the certificate. This holder can also fit the other ticket in, as a way of keeping them all together once the ceremony has finished.

Specifications The design are screen printed using silver metallic ink and UV spot varnish, on 100% recycled 260gsm blue card. The varnish is for the rectangle strips that frame the text, and the metallic is for the type. This is reversed on the ceremony ticket when the metallic is used as a block colour and the type is visible through to the blue stock. Graduation Ceremony Programme Similarly with the wallet and tickets, the programme will propably be kept by the student/parent as a reminder of the Graduation Ceremony, so it needs to have a quality that makes it feel special, but also it needs to be easy to read and follow during the ceremony. The booklet contains an Order of Ceremony, Principal’s Welcome, Keynote Speaker, Student Achievements, Student Awards and information about the Alumni Society. It also contains pages of inspirational quotes to give the graduands confidence in going out into the real world in the direction of their choice.

Specifications The stock for the cover of the programme is the same as the wallet and ticket - 100% recycled 260gsm blue card, and the design is screen printed using silver metallic ink and UV spot varnish. The inside pages of the booklet are printed a plain white 120gsm paper using just black ink, to keep the printing cost low. Programme Cover -140 x 148mm -2 separations Programme Inside Pages -140x148mm -20page (5 double sided spreads)

Venue Signage The signage that promotes the occasion include banners of different proportions. A stand banner would be placed for people to see once they have entered the venue, with the same banners used on either side of the stage. A strip banner would be used above the table on the stage with all the certificates, both clearly naming the occasion ‘Leeds College of Art Graduation 2012’.
