LCAD Christmas Card Design

A SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS CARD This Christmas card takes a sustainable approach in reducing the amount of printing, using eco-friendly paper stocks and in being fully recyclabe. The underlying design concept is to provide the recipient with a sustainable gift that they can interact with and keep, whilst also incorporating a number of design detials to improve its environmental crudentials above and beyond paper choice and inks. The card is made up of two elements: a thicker un-printed card stock (150 x 150 mm) and an inserted band of coloured card (119 x 119 mm). The Christmas tree shapes will be die cut out of 250gsm brown recyled card stock and have a coloured paper insert slotted into place in order to create the colour of the trees rather than printing this colour, which will reduce printing costs. The green coloured paper insert is made out of 300gsm Reindeer poo and Christmas Tree seeded paper, allowing it to be planted by the user as a means of recycling.

Designs to be printed on coloured page insert.

The type on the spine directs the user to the instructions on the inner left hand page, which also includes visual instructions on how to plant the seeded paper in order to reach a wider target audience. By following the instructions presented on the inner page of the card and planting the seeded paper insert, the user can reduce waste and grow their very own Christmas tree ready for next year. The Leeds College of Art logo will be positioned (either printed or die cut) on the back page of the brown card as a promotional means.

The Christmas tree pattern has derived from a hand drawn image and has been designed to retain this hand drawn element. As an alternative or to create a range, the die cut pattern could instead be snowflakes, using white card stock for the outer card and blue stock for the card insert. If die cutting the tree pattern in not possible, the pattern could simply be printed onto card. This digital version could also be used as the design for the e-card.
