Characteristically coy about his seasonal plans, Slater opened up the season with a victory at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and put the ASP Top 34 on notice: he wasn’t going anywhere.

“I’m having a lot of fun. It’s pretty easy. You go out and surf Snapper by yourself, it’s pretty fun. To get to surf a contest is a bonus.” – Slater

Slater roared to life on the Final day, unloading the highest heat-total of competition, 18.40 out of 20 in the Semifinals, and maintained his lethal form throughout the day’s entirety with a consistent display of new-school airs and patented carves to clinch his unprecedented 48th elite ASP World Tour victory and third of the season.

CHALLENGER 4: Newcomer Gabriel Medina, in only his second event as an ASP Top 34 member, scalped the first win of his young career over rookie Julian Wilson: “Just two years ago, I was here competing in the King of the Groms and I won that event and now I’m here in the main event and I’ve won it. It doesn’t seem real.” – Medina

With Slater pulling away from the pack, all eyes were on the King to see when (not ‘if’) he would clinch the 2011 ASP World Title.

“Counting Portugal, there are still three events left and a lot of points way towards it but there are still quite a few guys remaining in the hunt

ts so it’s far from over. Obviously another result here would go a long t that are still in the event so we’ll see how it all pans out.” – Slater

In gorgeous conditions at Ocean Beach, Kelly Slater defeated Daniel Ross in Round 3 of competition and was awarded the 2011 ASP World Title.

Despite the perfection of the moment, the victory was short-lived as a calculation error would reveal that the Champ was crowned one heat too early and the champagne was put back on ice.

After the calculation error,

Slater went on to best young Brazilian newcomers Gabriel Medina and Miguel Pupo in Round 4 of competition and officially confirm his 2011 ASP World Title in impressive fashion, lending credence to the claim that Kelly is surfing better than ever.

Gabriel Medina, 17, returns to the podium for his second elite tour victory in four attempts as an ASP Top 34 member. Is this the beginning of a paradigm shift in surfing?
