As we prepare 30th Kirkstall Festival, we mark another landmark for the Community Association. It is quite an achievement to have an event like our Festival, that is volunteer run and has a mass attendance with a continuity of 30 years.

We get some grant funding, that covers only about 25% of the costs and we have only had that in the last two years. This Festival will see the end of a three year grant from Leeds City Council. It is worrying to see the scale of the government cuts that are currently happening and we inevitably wonder whether grant funding will be forthcoming next year.

On a brighter note. I keep going on about our key volunteers getting older. This year, four of the people playing key roles in organising the festival are close to 20 in age. That is really good news for the future.

I’m really happy too that I have someone who will be working with me on producing the next magazine.

Sadly though, Kirkstall Matters has lost a friend since our last issue. We pay a tribute on pages 8 and 9 to Gerard Roe, who will be missed.

Kirkstall Harriers are keeping up the flow of news and information in this issue, as are the local scouts.

It is good that local groups are using the magazine as a facility—that is what it’s for.

The Aviator All-stars are based locally, in Wyther Lane and we are very happy to publicise their success. Looks like a good way to keep healthy and fit and is for both female and male participants.

Our letters column includes argument that would seek to lift speed restrictions on local streets and get rid of road humps on the basis of their being environmentally unfriendly. I know that local residents

who have campaigned the other way, including in the interests of the road safety of children may well have a different view.

We welcome our new member of Parliament in this issue. Rachel Reeves is no stranger. She lives in Kirkstall and has been an active member of KVCA. Rachel has an interview and letter in this issue.

Independently of party politics, we wish her the best in her future efforts to represent the people of Kirkstall and West Leeds.

FROM JOHN LIVERSEDGE CHAIR OF KVCA I hope you find this issue of the magazine interesting. There are a lot of things going on in Kirkstall at the moment. We are trying to put the ideas produced in the Kirkstall Vision document into action. This will involve our working with other community and resident groups in the area. We do need to take this forward and make sure the people living in the Kirkstall Ward see positive results from this document.

It was also very sad to hear of the death of Gerard Roe. Gerard was at one time an officer of the KVCA and was still involved with the Association up until his untimely death. Our thoughts are with his family.

Now on a brighter note and thoughts of a long hot summer! This time of year is always busy for those involved with the Kirkstall Festival. Most of the hard work is now complete and it's just a matter of taking care of all the bits and pieces.

This year is the 30th annual festival and we hope to make it a little bit special. In the festival programme I always make a point of thanking our committee for all the hard work they do each year, their effort and enthusiasm is commendable. I watch the tranquil grounds of the Abbey be transformed into a busy vibrant and exciting place of entertainment.

The setting up of the grounds on the Friday is hard physical work and can be very stressful to say the least. Our younger committee members and the field team boys and girls I have to say tend to carry we at the older end.

We have guys who stay on site overnight and then we all start again very early on Saturday morning, more stress, are the toilets in the right places, have all the 250 waste bins been put out, is all the signage in place, have the generators arrived, etc, etc.

Then around 8am stall holders begin to arrive and for the next two hours it's manic, there is so much going on. 10am onwards the public are in, we are doing our finishing touches, checking generators are fenced in, all the road pins and marquee pins are covered, etc. By 11am the entertainments are beginning, oh my god we've started!

All of a sudden it's 5.30pm and we are taking things down, clearing the site, litter picking, taking all the rubbish bags up to the skips. It's getting dark, the site is clear at last.

Everyone is a bit bad tempered and very tired. Our legs, backs and feet ache, croaky voices but it's been a good day. Home for a quick shower then meet at the West End pub for a few drinks, those who can walk or have not fallen asleep that is.

The people who do this do it for fun! unpaid volunteers. Eleven months work condensed into two days. They are the festival committee, I love them all, even the field manager and I take my hat off to them.

So please do enjoy yourselves, it is your community festival. Please buy a programme to help pay for the 31st festival.

Kirkstall Online is a community resource and information website for the residents of Kirkstall and those with an interest in the area.. Kirkstall Online is an affiliated member of the KVCA. Matthew Guy (below) who now lives in Canada continues to maintain the website.

SOME SHAKESPEARE AT THE ABBEY

The elections in May resulted in the election of a new member of Parliament for West Leeds, Rachel Reeves, who is interviewed in this issue. Longstanding Kirkstall Councillor, Bernard Atha was also returned to serve a further term, with an increased majority. Both Rachel and Bernard are Kirkstall residents and members of the KVCA and we look forward to continuing to work with them as members, as well as in their official capacities.

There is not to be another Shakespeare Festival at Kirkstall Abbey this Summer. Regrettably, the difficulties that we have commented on in previous issues have meant that the British Shakespeare Company will not be coming back. PICTURE OF ‘SOUTH HOLME’ The location of the picture from 1906 that we were loaned by Ian Ballantine that was printed in the last edition has been identified. Peter Walker put it as the corner of Spen Lane and Vesper Road. He tells us that the land used to be a Market Garden in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The house was lived in by the market gardeners. The House was later sold and other houses built in the grounds. Of course a close by the same name is there now. Ray Booth tells us: “ The house is now numbered 1, Vesper Road and the one with the white porch is number 15. Although the white porch is gone and there are a few other minor alterations, the houses are still standing.

The photo is taken is taken looking North west from the edge of Morris Lane, near the boundary between the field (Crooked Acres) and the bottom of the gardens of what is now Southolme Close.

I guess that the Brickworks were somewhere near where Abbey Grange School now is—no doubt someone else can give better information about them.

IN MEMORY OF GERARD ROE It is with sadness that we learn of the untimely death, at home on 27th April 2010 of Gerard Roe, at the age of 57. Gerard was a long-standing member of the KVCA, a willing worker for the local community- giving his time, skills and energies. In particular, we owe him a debt of gratitude, including for his work in the production of many of the previous issues of ‘Kirkstall Matters’.

Below, our former KVCA Chair, Ray Booth pays tribute to Gerard below. Ray speaks for all the current officers of KVCA in respect of the contribution that Gerard made and in his expression of sympathy and condolence.

On the facing page, we reproduced three photographs and a poem, taken from Gerard’s personal website, that contains photography, poetry and personal reflection and remains open in the form of a tribute to Gerard. This can be found at: http://www.gerard.kirkstall.org.uk.

Memories of Gerard Roe Early in May, I was sad to hear of the death of my friend Gerard Roe. Gerard was an active KVCA member and edited Kirkstall Matters for many years, as well as campaigning on many local issues. Gerard had for a long time assisted Geoff Hogdson in the production of the magazine, and took on responsibility for this task for several years after Geoff passed on. At that time I was Treasurer and then Chair, so of course I worked closely with Gerard.

Gerard was a keen photographer, and had IT skills at a time when such knowledge was fairly rare, both of which contributed greatly to his role as our magazine editor. A former teacher, he changed his career into IT support, and as his job became more demanding, Gerard passed on the editing of the magazine to Val Crompton, and subsequently he continued his involvement as a magazine distributor.

He cared passionately about his home city of Leeds and our district of Kirkstall, particularly voicing his concerns on environmental and heritage issues. He enjoyed the diverse natural environment of our valley, and I remember he was particularly delighted when he found that a family of foxes had decided to set up home in his garden.

Gerard had enjoyed a fit and active life until very recently, when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a cruel illness which attacks the nervous system with a wide range of symptoms. In Gerard’s case it very quickly caused the loss of complex thinking abilities and his technical skills, and this rapid decline led to his early death.

Gerard chose to live a single life-style, but he was not reclusive and he enjoyed the company of his family and friends. I know he spent a lot of time caring for his parents in their declining years, and in conversations he often mentioned his close attachment to his twin brother Dominic, to whom Val Crompton and I expressed our sympathy when we attended Gerard’s funeral.

Gerard expressed his thought in poetry too. Below he comments on a ‘suburban boredom’ that contrasts with his commitment to engagement with the community, his neighbourhood and the wider world.

Val Crompton remarked to me recently “Gerard was a very creative person and was keen to encourage children to write poems for Kirkstall Matters. He would be pleased to see the success of the Beecroft Primary School poems in the last issue.”

As a visit to Gerard’s site illustrates, his interests extended very far indeed. He records several trips to China in recent years. Below we reproduce a picture taken in Hong Kong, a couple of years back. On the right is his picture of the urban fox that Ray refers to in his tribute, emerging at sunset.

An important thing about Gerard was that he cared about what was going on in this world, about others and was committed to speaking up to change things when he felt that was needed. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon reminded me recently of the determination with which Gerard fought to ensure improvements, access and lighting to a local footpath as an example of this. If everyone was as tenacious, we’d move mountains.

So … its that time again. The 30th Kirkstall Festival will once again be happening at Kirkstall Abbey Park on 10th July. Once again, our committee (some of who are in the picture top left) have organised a unique event. It is just done by volunteers NOT by the Council. We also have to raise the funds to put it on. At the risk of repeating ourselves PLEASE BUY A PROGRAMME. Without this, we can’t pay for the toilets, the bins and skips, the PA systems, the health and safety, stages, etc. that you all expect to be there.

FESTIVAL PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIAL In association with Leeds Photographers’ Collective ’Exposure Leeds’, KVCA is inviting photographers to record our Festival.

We want to create a high quality visual record of the event that marks our 30th Anniversary appropriately.

Entries are being invited from ‘Exposure Leeds’ members and from the members of Leeds Visual Arts organisation, East Street Arts. Members of the public are also welcome to take part, particularly from within the local community.

On 10th July those interested in taking part in recording this volunteer-run event should record the whole of the day. We are looking for digital images. The images will be used in a number of ways.

In a special section in the Autumn issue of ‘Kirkstall Matters’ – the magazine of Kirkstall Valley Community Association (with a circulation of 1000 copies) and be displayed on the Kirkstall Community website.

Be collated into a photo-book documenting the event. That we would hope to lodge with the local library and with the Abbey House museum.

In addition, a judging Panel will make a selection of ‘Best in Show’ entries, with recognition being awarded and certified by the Community Association in the evening at the Patrick Studios event on 29th July.

SCHOOLS NEWS: BEECROFT PRIMARY Beecroft Wins Gold Once Again!

For a second time Ofsted Inspectors have judged the school ‘Outstanding’ Beecroft Primary has been awarded the gold standard after Ofsted inspectors, once again, judged the school ‘Outstanding’. The school was deemed ‘Outstanding’ at its last inspection in 2007 and the latest report states: “This is an outstanding school that has sustained high performance and excellence over time.”

Ofsted found all students, whatever their needs or abilities, made outstanding progress “because their individual needs are carefully assessed and high-quality individual support provided.”

The quality of teaching was considered outstanding with commendation given for imaginative lessons with relevance to the real world.

The inspectors said, “Pupils’ outstanding spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is very evident in their mature reflecYear Six visit Castleton tive attitudes and their desire to take part in musical performances, organise the school’s Fair-trade shop, contribute to the local town magazine and write poems for the annual Leeds City “Together for Peace” initiative.”

Further Improvements to Beecroft Primary School New Building Balcony BEECROFT BUILDING WORK After 6 months, the building work in the hall at Beecroft Primary School, Kirkstall, in Leeds was finally finished and refurbished to provide a more welcoming and brighter atmosphere.

ESSENTIAL WORK IN THE HALL Improvements included a brand new heating system, harvesters that recycle air and new replacement windows. Peter Dickeson Associates did a fantastic job! The hall is well designed and Beecroft say it has made a dramatic improvement to the school, but will all this work pay off?

WILL IT PAY OFF? What is most exciting for the pupils is the new transparent, glass balustrade in the playground. It provides a perfect view over Kirkstall. Beecroft Primary pupils’ look forward to using it and are proud to have such an unusual feature in their playground. One of the pupils, Victoria, commented, “I can’t wait to sit on the balcony in summer, it’s the most New Building Hall attractive and the best bit!”

Everyone thinks the hard work has paid off.

Beauty is a pleasure that lasts forever, or as John Keats said, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”

KIRKSTALL HARRIERS REVIEW MAY 2010

by Jill Stocks, Secretary, Kirkstall Harriers After a busy festive season we launched head long into the new year! Only to be thwarted by some appalling ice underfoot preventing us from any “normal� training and leading to the cancellation of many races. However, we have carried on regardless in our usual busy fashion!

Cross Country The cross country season is now over and we finished in style! We managed to get a full ladies team out at the Northern cross country in Blackburn in January, but sadly not a full men's team. The ladies finished a very respectable 18th from 22 in a very fast field.

We also had a ladies and men's team at the National cross country in Roundhay Park in February, alongside a team of willing volunteers from the club who marshalled a section of the course, with thanks to local resident Keith Huggins who also came along to help. A very muddy course made for some interesting running conditions! And good performances from all involved in a very strong field.

The last race in the PECO cross country season took place at Esholt in March, taking in the woods around the area and some of the Emmerdale set to boot. Gemma Smith has been our prolific ladies performer this season coming first in each race she has taken part in and finishing first lady overall this season. This has been backed up by some excellent performances by the rest of the ladies including Eleanor Franks, Rachel Pilling, Sheila King and Alex Saunders, who has recently left the area to move down south for an exciting new job, but hopes to return for cross country runs in the future! The chaps won the first division, with excellent performances from all the runners, including Peter Branney who finished 3rd in his age group and 6th overall. They will now join the ladies in the Premier division for the 2010/2011 season.

There will be a presentation barbecue in May which will also involve a few adult races, such as a sack race and an egg and spoon race!

Club Championship The 2009 Club Championship was a huge success with most members taking part in at least one race in the series. The winner was Sam Ostermeyer, closely followed by Rob Owen, who has since moved down to the big smoke, in second and myself in third. This years championship started with the first

race at Liversedge Half Marathon in February, followed by the Esholt Cross Country in March and the Guiseley Gallop on Easter Sunday. At the time of writing Rachel Pilling is leading with Matt Hooban in second and myself in third. But there is still a long way to go with races to come at Rothwell and Leeds Half Marathon soon.

25th Anniversary A great night was had by all at the 25th Anniversary Presentation Evening at the LPSA Club in March, when members past and present donned their posh frocks to celebrate 25 years of the club and its members. Prizes were awarded in various categories including best road runner male and female, to Gary

Carlisle and Gemma Smith, best cross country runner male and female to Peter Branney and Alex Saunders and Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year to Patrick Nesden and myself, Jill Stocks. The club championship prizes were also awarded on the night as mentioned above and lifetime achievement awards were given to Richard Thomas and Peter Hey for all the work they have put in to the club over 25 years. We hope that the event will become an annual gathering to honour those who have done so much for the club and the sport now, then and in the future.

Yorkshire Veterans The first race in the YVAA Grand Prix for 2010 took place at Meltham with races to come at Kirkstall, Pudsey, Meanwood, Honley, Knavesmire and Skipton. We urgently need marshals for various duties for the race we are hosting in Kirkstall on June 1st. If you would like to help in any capacity please get in touch through our website.

AGM The AGM took place on 24th February this year with 24 members in attendance. All of the committee were re-elected with no changes or new additions. The only real change was that the ladies will now pay the same subs as the men. Bringing us in to the 21st century!

Local and not so local races Helen Goldthorpe took part in the Gran Canaria Marathon in January and was rewarded with a plentiful goodie bag! Cassie Garbutt took part in the Paris marathon. Unfortunately Cassie will be leaving the area soon but we wish her all the best for the future.

Many races were cancelled due to the icy conditions and snow which made it and Liam

treacherous to travel to some races. However, we had an excellent turn out at the races which did go ahead. The ladies team narrowly missed out on the team prize at Liversedge Half. Dave Spink claimed the 3rd Male over 50 prize, which could be the first of many to come. Several members took part in the Baildon Boundary Way half marathon and the following weeks Guiseley Gallop on Easter Sunday. PB's were plentiful at Januarys Brass Monkey Half Marathon in York

Mealey took part in the 12 mile Winter Hill Fell Race on Valentines Day which crossed Rivington Pike. He later took part in the Three Peaks Fell Race in April posting a very respectable time of 5:05. Several members took part in the scenic Dentdale Run in Cumbria where it is quite normal to see a llama on the way round.

Tim Foreman, Diane Shaw, Eleanor Franks and Helen Goldthorpe took part in the London Marathon on April 25th with some excellent running in quite warm conditions despite a downpour before the start. Eleanor was raising money for a new rape crisis centre in Leeds along the way. Yours truly helped man a baggage bus at the start area before heading to mile 22 with the club banner to cheer on all the runners. The London Continued bottom of Page 18

INBOX: YOUR LETTERS AND EMAILS House of Commons Westminster London SW1 Dear readers of ‘Kirkstall Matters’ I’m very excited to be able to offer my first contribution to Kirkstall Matters as Leeds West’s new Member of Parliament. Kirkstall is my home, and since I was elected in May I feel that is truer than ever. When I return to the constituency every week, I know I am returning to a place that puts a smile on my face and where I am proud to live and work I would like to thank Kirkstall for putting its trust in me on May 6th alongside the rest of Leeds West. I am determined to repay that faith and work tirelessly for our community – no matter whether you voted for me. In the few weeks since the election, I have already started putting in that hard work. In fact, my feet have barely touched the ground – it certainly doesn’t seem like ‘a week is a long time in politics’ just yet!

Much of the first few weeks has been dominated by the talk of ‘new politics’ and coalition. I was sad to see Gordon Brown leave, as he is a principled man who had made the right decisions throughout the recession. But, with Labour in opposition, my job is to responsibly hold the government to account. Part of that is fighting for the future of our regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, which does excellent work for our local economy.

As well as Yorkshire Forward, I’ve been asking questions and holding meetings about the Kirkstall Forge development. Although it is important to cut the deficit, the government must do this responsibly, and recognise the huge value of improving public transport in our community. The Kirkstall Forge development will bring jobs and development to our doorstep, and relies on a new railway station, which would improve public transport no end. I’m fully committed to making sure it goes ahead through the tough times that lie in store.

The most enjoyable parts of the few weeks have been my work in the constituency. I’ve visited Primary Schools, local businesses and met leaders at Yorkshire Forward, Education Leeds and WY Metro. I’ve volunteered at a local charity shop as part of national volunteer week and started holding surgeries as well.

I look forward to many, many more enjoyable weeks representing you.

CAROL SINGERS - INTERESTED? In my youth, over in the East Riding, a highlight of Christmas was singing as the “Hessle Waits”. We would have a few rehearsals, with our conductor.

Invitations would be sent out to houses in the locality who singers knew, informing them that we would be coming round to sing, if they would care to be in be in to listen, but could they let us know if not.

We would stand outside individual houses or in a close. Listeners were presented with a list and could choose a favourite carol to hear. A donation box was proffered with money going to a local charity. The last house of the night would invite lots of people in and provide supper. We would sing quite a lot of carols in return!

I think that Kirkstall would lend itself to this. Anyone singers interested— sopranos, altos, tenors and basses appreciated, but a few “not sures” would not go amiss amongst the throng!

LIKE CARS DISLIKE POLITICIANS There are over one hundred local and national politicians who represent Leeds. Between them shouldn’t they have produced a better strategy than to developed the Leeds airport in the west, and concentrate there new road building in the east.

Most accident black spots on the A65 are at bus stops that’s because travelling from Leeds most of the development is on the right side of the road, so nearly every passenger has to cross the road, most restricting their vision by wearing scarves hats hoods burkes umbrellas, or they block their ears with mobile phones I pods or mp3 players, they roam out without waiting for the bus to move off.

Politicians are to blame for this not car drivers. A car is least polluting and most efficient at a steady 40 mph it’s a fact a child would be unlikely to survive an impact with a ton and a half of metal at 40 mph.. They never say how slow a seven ton lump of metal a bus should travel?

A sensible solution would be to keep people and vehicles separated by barriers with designated crossing points. Funded by the revenue from speeding fines. Politicians know cars are going to be quieter even silent, yet they allow pedestrians to roam on our roads, It’s their lack of ability and accountability at fault not road users. Politicians seem unable to grasp the simplest of facts.

Speed humps and slowing cars increase air and noise pollution.

Emission tests on roads with humps increase CO by 70-80%, Hydro-carbons by 70-100% and CO2 by 50-60%.

On a one mile length of smooth road a car driven daily at 20mph would produce an extra tonne of CO2 annually than it would driven at 30mph. Add these facts together you see how out of date their Luddite lunacy is.

The London Ambulance Service claim that the 30,000 humps in the capital cause up to 500 deaths a year through delays.

They are planning to slow emergency vehicles all across Hawksworth soon.

On Vesper Road alone they are planning 17 obstructions so don’t get ill. We must get this changed to 30 mph averaging speed cameras before our properties are as valuable as they would be in Middleton or Gipton. Why is it those who want no go areas don’t go any where. And why don’t the councillors who support road obstacles have then out side there own homes.

The Government knows humps damage vehicles, so we need an honest garage to provide reports on the likely cause of the damage, so we can sue the council. Politicians turn our roads in to obstacle courses then criticise us for buying 4x4s. They refer to commuters as rats just for trying to get to their jobs.

Tell me one MP who hasn’t quietly got his snout in the trough, one who has spoken out against excesses in Westminster, that’s the one I wanted to vote for. While we sit in gridlock think about the £60.000 leaving allowance and the pension of 80% of a fabulous salary the mps who chose to retire can expect. Paid for along with most Government excess by the beleaguered motorist.

History of de Lacey Mount Mike Harwood of de Lacey Mount has sent a very interesting history that he has researched and written. It covers the history of the Normans, the Cardigan Estate and goes back to the 7th Earl (of Light Brigade fame).

A RESPONSE TO STEVE HARRIS’ LETTER IN ISSUE 102.

Great Steve it’s healthy to air differing views it’s what this magazine should be all about.

What it shouldn’t be is a sycophantic mouthpiece of one political party. We have article after article with one councillor praising the other councillors, yet none have ever accepted the challenge to justify their performance relative to other wards.

For instance while East Leeds plan was to create 30.000 jobs West Leeds equivalent plans aspiration was for local jobs to be for local people. Which proves there’s no such thing as a visionary Luddite.

Councillors, who demonise motorists and believe roads should only be for pedalling parasites and buses, should write in and argue their case.

And also explain why it’s right to concrete over green fields to have houses for us, and the rest of the world, but wrong to have roads to get to work to pay for it all.

Their transport policy for the A65 is to give priority to buses in to Leeds, please tell us the number of people in Kirkstall who use buses to get to work in the city centre.

They must know this figure they wouldn’t fund this change just because of an anti car dogma?

Although nationally, their party has behaved like a drunken sailor with a stolen credit card.

Because the mean average of speed policy in Kirkstall is a maximum 25mph down to gridlock. manufacturing won’t locate here, we’ll only have council jobs, retail and an immigration centre.

After 20 years can our out going mp tell us why there are no decent roads in west Leeds.

It’s just another anti religion group, they may provide aid to the needy, they may fund schools and hospitals to third world countries, they may campaign against wars, but I doubt it.

Thank you for publishing "A colourful history" - I think it was interesting - the letterhead brought the page to life. Isabella has been sent the magazine and is very pleased. It was too big for inclusion in the Life magazines (excellent though they are).

MEMORIES OF OLD KIRKSTALL… How's this for a coincidence! I called at my local Post Office in Liversedge to pay some bills and the lady behind the counter said: ' I used to go to school with someone called John Appleyard'. which school says I? Kirkstall County Primary she replied. That was my school. we were in the same class and had the same teacher Mr Turner. Her name was Susan Shaw and she remembered many of our old school mates, Graham Hall, Howard Matthews, Julie Briggs, Pamela Hunter and many more.

Susan lived in the Vicarages and I lived in Aarons row which was at the back of Beecroft street. Susan and I hadn't seen each other for 46 years, Susan went on to West Park School and I went to Kirkstall Road school.

In my final year Hamish Tetlow was my teacher. He seemed to teach every thing, science, maths and English. I remember one morning both of us having a good laugh at the previous nights Tony Hancock show on TV. We were both in hysterics. The school was known for its Rugby League and Gary Hemmingway, ex Leeds Rugby player was our sports teacher, he also taught us French and was responsible for bringing on my school mate John Holmes who went on to grace the rugby pitch for both Leeds and Great Britain. Sadly Hamish, Gary and John have passed away. but there alive in my memory.

The recent edition of Kirkstall Matters gives a mention to ' Dobby Row', my uncle lived there in the 1950s. the neighbours always seemed a jolly bunch, they brewed their own whisky. I also remember the Kirkstall Congregational Church opposite the bottom of Beecroft Street. they ran a Sunday school and the ' boys brigade' assembled there. Half way up Beecroft street on the left was an off licence called Warringtons and further up on the right was a chapel where I was a member of the Cubs, which also organised the brownies, scouts and Guides. opposite the chapel was May Hirsts shop where we got our sweets such as ' lucky bags'. Much of this part of Kirkstall has long gone, but as John Battle says: ' Kirkstall has still got its Abbey.

WE INTERVIEW OUR NEW M.P. Kirkstall has a new Member of Parliament (for the West Leeds Constituency). She is our very own Kirkstall Resident and KVCA member. Rachel is one of a new generation of younger MP’s, from all parties who entered Parliament in May. And she is the first woman MP from any party in Leeds in half a century! We were delighted to be able to interview her for this issue of ‘Kirkstall Matters’.

KM: Congratulations on your election as Member of Parliament for Leeds West. You must be extremely pleased?

RR: I feel honoured and privileged to have the chance to represent Leeds West. There are some very big shoes to fill after the hard work John Battle did for our community – and I only hope that I can take on his wise words and live up to his reputation in our community.

KM: How would you describe your first few weeks in Parliament?

RR: It has been fascinating. Working in a big room with half of the new MPs while we are allocated offices, finding my way around the Palace of Westminster, asking questions in the chamber and dealing with the tradition and procedure that surrounds everything is a great experience. I’m really glad that I’ve been able to start working quickly – I feel like I’m finding my feet.

KM: What work have you done so far?

RR: Because I think it is really important that the government cuts the deficit fairly, I’ve been getting behind the things that I think should be protected as much as possible – that means Yorkshire Forward, who do fantastic work for the local economy, the proposed high speed rail link between Leeds and London and of course Kirkstall Forge railway station.

KM: What is your priority as Leeds West’s MP? RR: Well, this is a really important time for our local economy. Our area will be hit hard by spending cuts, and my priority is to make sure that the cuts which have to be made are done fairly. I will support the government where its spending cuts are prudent and necessary, but hold them to account where I think they are unfair to people here in Leeds West.

KM: Leeds West is obviously quite diverse – where does Kirkstall fit in your plans?

RR: Kirkstall is my home. It is a fantastic part of our constituency – and I want to make sure it stays so. I’ve got to know it really well since moving here – from being a governor at Kirkstall Valley Primary to (more recently) pounding the streets during the election campaign! I’m fighting to make sure that Kirkstall Forge gets a new railway station, to see better transport links for everyone in our area. I want to be open and accessible for anyone who needs my support or advice, and will be holding surgeries across Kirkstall and across the whole constituency.

KM: How do people get in touch with you for that?

UPDATE FROM KIRKSTALL FORGE In addition, CEG has met with potential construction partners with a view to entering into a joint agreement to develop the housing component of the scheme and is preparing the residential brand identity and marketing strategy.

Rail update The planning applications for the Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge stations have both been submitted by Network Rail to Leeds City Council and the Apperley Bridge application has received consent. At the time of writing, the Kirkstall Forge station application was due to go before the planning committee on 17 June and is recommended for approval by planning officers.

Developer, Commercial Estates Group (CEG) is set to deliver one of the most ambitious schemes in Leeds’ development pipeline at the former Kirkstall Forge.

A revitalised version of the master-plan, which maximises the natural qualities of the site, has been created by RIBA Sterling award-winning architects Feilden Clegg Bradley. The updated master-plan, which reduces the number of apartments from that originally proposed in order to provide more family homes and commercial office space on the 56-acre site, was presented to the Leeds City Council Plans Panel in February 2010.

The proposals still include a vibrant mix of homes, offices, shops, bars, cafes and leisure facilities as follows:

Marketing the site A new brand has been unveiled for the forge and a bespoke marketing brochure and revitalised website www.kirkstallforge.com have been created to attract commercial tenants to the proposed office space. The development is now visible from the A65 thanks to hoardings at the site entrance.

The technical and outline design of the Kirkstall Forge rail halt has been completed and CEG has invested additional funds to enhance the design of the station to ensure it fully integrates with the development. A major scheme business case has been submitted to the Department for Transport (DfT) and is currently awaiting approval from the Treasury.

The station could be open as early as December 2012.

Planning CEG is speaking with Leeds City Council about the submission of a reserved matters planning application for the scheme’s infrastructure, including access and the roads, cycle-ways and pedestrian routes within the site.

A five-year temporary planning consent has also recently been granted by Leeds City Council for a hand car wash facility on the site of the former petrol filling station. CEG has selected an operator and work is due to begin on site this month with opening expected in July.

The commercial element is unique, due to lease terms which offer potential tenants far more flexibility than is on offer anywhere else in the UK. CEG is also working closely with Leeds-based office agents as well as Leeds City Council, Financial Leeds, Marketing Leeds and Locate in Leeds to promote Leeds, and Kirkstall Forge, as a business destination to local, national and international organisations.

Although the present focus is very much on the commercial element of the scheme, CEG is currently in discussions with hotel operators in order to move the leisure facilities forward.

By Lucinda Yeadon Do you know someone or a group of people that have made a real difference to you or your local community through voluntary work? If so, why not let them know how much their efforts are appreciated by nominating them for a volunteering award?

There are armies of unsung heroes in Leeds who give their time and energy for free to help charitable organisations, improve the lives of vulnerable people and put something back into the community.

2010 is the Leeds Year of Volunteering, and as well as encouraging more people to roll their sleeves up and get involved, we want to recognise people that are already making a difference by volunteering, and celebrate the work that they do.

That’s why the council and Voluntary Action Leeds have introduced the Leeds Volunteering Owls. Its an awards scheme that will allow any resident of Leeds to nominate a volunteer or group of volunteers that they feel deserve a pat on the back for the unpaid work they have done to the benefit of others. Volunteers can also nominate themselves or the group that they work with if they wish to.

The awards will be presented at a prestigious event at Leeds Civic Hall in December. There will be an award for each of the 10 volunteering themes taking place throughout the year, which are: February March April May June July August September October November

Committed - recognises an individual who has regularly volunteered, devoting their time and energy to one or several projects and has made a lasting impact.

Newcomer - recognises an individual who is new to volunteering and in a small space of time has had a big impact.

Corporate - recognises people who volunteer through their work.

The closing date for nominations is 30 September 2010. Everyone who is nominated for an award will be sent a certificate of congratulations. Shortlisted finalists will be invited to the awards evening on 1 December at Leeds Civic Hall.

by Richard Frank KIRKSTALL The Scout Movement is for young people from the age 6 upwards - and for boys and girls. There are 2 Scout Groups in the Kirkstall area, one based at St Stephens' Church in Kirkstall, the other is based at St Mary's Church, Hawksworth Wood. Each Group runs Beavers Scouts (for the 6 - 8 year olds); Cub Scouts (for the 8 - 10 1/2 year olds) and Scouts (for 10 1/2 - 14 + year olds). The Scout District provides an Explorer Scout Unit for young people over 14 1/2 Each section is led by trained Leaders who have been CRB checked, and hold a current First Aid qualification.

The 5th North Leeds (St Stephen's) meets at the St Stephens Church Hall, Norman Street, Leeds 5.

The Troop are heading off to Switzerland this summer to camp near St Moritz with our ‘link’ Group, the Pfadi Pfaffikon and we have been busy fundraising! The Group ran a successful Christmas fair at St Mary’s, have been bag packing, and organised a Sponsored Walk from Bingley to St Mary’s. Part of the proceeds of the walk went to Leukaemia research. The Beavers and the Cubs also raised funds by Carol singing at Asda!

On the Saturday, the Scouts headed off on an Incident hike, visiting various bases in the valley to complete various challenges such as building - and using - a ballista; retrieving a drum from the middle of the river; and working out the numbers on two combination locks to open a

February night had to be cancelled due to heavy rain during the week leaving the ground very muddy.

Both camps were extremely cold, the temperature being lowered even further by the slight wind. Our first main camp of the year was in April at Bramhope where we did some training, and played wide games on Otley Chevin. In May, the Troop camped at Curly Hill, Ilkley on the hottest weekend of the year so far.

We hiked on Ilkley Moor and went swimming, but much of the time was spent relaxing in the sunshine.

Troop night meetings are not always spent in St Mary’s - we had a night hike in February around Eccup reservoir, and went skating in Leeds. The Scouts also took part in a variation of an Easter Egg Hunt on Otley Chevin. Indoor Troop meetings have included sessions on making ginger bread houses, bright yellow fleecy hats and carpet racing!

many other activities with our ‘twin’ Scout Group in Switzerland, the Pfadi Pfaffikon. The older Scouts may well be doing a 2 day expedition into the mountains, sleeping out at almost 3000m to watch the sunset and the following day’s sunrise.

Later in the year we will be having our annual golf competition, raft building, cycling in the York area, a weekend on a narrow boat, a weekend in Wensleydale, the annual winter weekend at Blakedean . . and much more!

In the next 3 months, Scouts will have the opportunity to camp, go caving in the Yorkshire Dales, have a sculpture night (with Doctor Rock and Captain Swede!) and take part in a ‘Trading Post’ activity.

We hope to have the Scout Group web site up and running shortly – details will appear in the next edition of ‘Kirkstall Matters'. The Cubs and Beavers have been active as well, and both sections are looking forward to the Group Camp in June. We will be having a stall at the Hawksworth Wood Primary School Summer Fair to promote the Group and Scouting in the area and we will be happy to talk to anyone who might be interested in finding out more about us – either as a Beaver / Cub or Scout, or as a Leader!

The main camp of the year will be in Switzerland, close to St Moritz. During the fortnight we will be away we will be hiking high in the Swiss National Park, trying out ‘trottinett’ ( a sort of scooter ) and

LEEDS CHEERLEADERS ARE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS Local cheerleading team have defended their crown as the Best in Europe.

The Aviator Allstars cheerleading group have had an incredible year after been crowned Regional and National Champions in the UK and claiming over 30 trophies this year alone. The team, based in West Leeds, have just returned from the European Championships coming 1st, 4th, and 5th at the event held in Germany last weekend.

Cheerleading is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and Europe with over 30,000 registered cheerleaders in the country. After triumphing at the UK National competition in March, performing their routines in front of over 4,000 people at Nottingham Arena, the team travelled to Germany to compete against National Champions from Germany,

Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Poland, France, Switzerland, Slovenia, Norway, Holland, the Ukraine and many more.

The competition was held on Germany on the 22nd and 23rd of May. The preliminary rounds were held on Saturday with only the top 5 in each category qualifying for the finals on Sunday. All three Aviators’ teams made it through and were the only program to accomplish this. The 2 Aviators adult teams placed 4th and 5th in their categories against incredibly tough competition. The senior team, which is made up of Leeds school, college, and university students, took 1st place and won their 2nd European title in as many years. So far this local team is undefeated since it started in January 2009.

They are currently recruiting for the 2010-2011 season and are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated individuals (no experience necessary) to join their award winning program.
