Welcome
to Kinross-shire’s first Winter Festival; a celebration of community that proves there’s no excuse to stay at home in November or December! It’s a vibrant mix of live music, family activities and traditional festive fun, with pantos, fairs, Santa’s grottos and party nights as well as internationally renowned guest artists. Well-known names like Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue (16 Nov) and Dr Hook vocalist Dennis Locorriere (17 Nov) are welcomed to Kinross by the annual Music Festival, alongside local talent such as Lucy Duffy (24 Nov) and the Elaine Shorthouse Duo (24 Nov). Plus there are plenty of opportunities for joining in and making music, with workshops and special events like Kinross-shire’s Got Talent (15 Nov). This year’s Winter Festival is an exciting collaboration between community groups and businesses. Whether it’s buying local, coming along to events or soaking up the atmosphere at the Festive Street Market (23 Nov), we hope this guide helps you find new ways of making the most of what’s on offer in your community. Enjoy!
Thanks KLEO (Kinross-shire Local Events Organisation) could do nothing at all without it’s own strong team and the support of many local groups, businesses and individuals who help make events happen. The Feel Good Fair in May is a collaboration with The Kinross & District Pipe Band, Kinross Road Runners and Loch Leven Community Campus. The Mary Queen of Scots ‘Escape to Kirkgate Park’ event in August was organised together with the local Rotary Club and the Orwell Players. Swansacre Playgroup, Kinross-shire Round Table and Ladies Circle figure heavily in KLEO events in all sorts of ways. It results in what KLEO was formed for, which is to produce something bigger than any group or business could probably present on an individual basis. Also to gather assets, expertise and encouragement to support groups to put on the kinds of events they want. Milnathort Post Office and the Macbeth & Currie office both give us invaluable support helping sell tickets for various events. Continuing thanks to Fiona and Andrew ( Fruix Farm) and Todd & Duncan for storing our event equipment and Stuart Skinner for last minute transport of a large marquee. Finally many thanks to all the volunteers who help out at the various events! Esther Kent gave this publication her professionalism, for which great appreciation. Any errors, omission or faux pas sit squarely with the tiny production team! Thanking Kinross-shire Newsletter and www.kinross.cc for being a source of local information from which we borrowed a great deal.

Festive Dressing Adele Hamilton and Marlene White, the local duo behind Integro Image, are trained personal image consultants whose main aim is to give clients the tools to shop and dress for their shape, personality, lifestyle and ambitions. They firmly believe that you don’t have to spend a fortune to look fantastic and ultimately feel more confident. With their mantra to save you time, space and money here are their top tips to keep you calm & looking glam over the festive period... Christmas is a time for magic, so don’t let dressing up for Christmas get you down. * Change the look of last year’s Christmas outfit by wearing it with different coloured shoes, belt, bag, jewellery, or wrap for a new “wow”. * Look for a great key piece you can dress up for night time or dress down for more relaxed day wear. Think layering (different colours either over or under will expand your wardrobe greatly) * The high street shops are all doing fab offers at the moment, but remember the shopping rules: Don’t “make do” - Love it madly or leave it gladly. Feel fabulous this festive season.
* TOP TIP – think about a bit of your body you like, and draw people’s eye to it by wearing your brighter colours or accessories there. Christmas can be stressful enough, but a little bit of preplanning in your wardrobe, will leave you free to enjoy the festivities. You need to gather together all the ingredients to make a Christmas cake – think of your wardrobe in the same way.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Stylish New Year.

Come along for Swansacre’s Christmas Countdown & join our celebrations. Bouncy Castle, kids craft activities, lucky dip… …and maybe even a very special visitor before his busiest month of the year!

Time for Song Chances are you might find yourself mumbling the words of a song in the next few months. At the back of a children’s concert, an office party night, at a family celebration or at a Christmas Service. It is hard to escape singing as part of our lives. In the past it was often used to motivate and unify workers and even armies, not to mention being an accompaniment to daily chores. The 40 -50 folks who make up Leven Voices, a singing group formed after a taster at the Kinross-shire Music Festival a year ago, enjoy weekly sessions with a tutor, many indicating it provides them with great joy and release.
It is an example of Community Singing in the oral tradition, no music reading required.
All this activity releases endorphins which are ‘feel good’ hormones which minimise stress.
Through our days we may hold tightly to our emotions as our jobs or families might demand, or we may live quietly and alone. Singing seems to provide an outlet where our voices can finally be used with some force and heard without causing offence or just heard!
Your breathing is paced separating you from stressful thoughts which can otherwise dictate your breathing and heart rates.
Singing is good for you and here are some of the reasons why: It encourages deep healthy breathing. It fills your cells with oxygen, also taking away toxins.
People are often fearful of using their voices publicly, speaking or singing, this ‘practise’ at using your voice helps increase self confidence making your speaking voice stronger. It can also increase your confidence to create in general.
Being part of a group producing song encourages a sense of belonging and community It gets your memory which I am sure is the going, linking rhythms, experience of Leven melodies and allowing you Voices. They also enjoy to connect words the cakes! and emotions.
Look out for Choir concerts and sessions for all ages during November.
An alternative vocal expression which can also be experienced during the festival is a session using mantra. This has all the above benefits ( apart from the cakes!) and a few more to boot. Previous participants have reported effects you might like to explore and enjoy. Whatever you decide, sounds like mumbling a song is something to leave behind. Be good to yourself and be heard! A WinterOasis If you are like me you may have several old pieces of oasis in the shed. What can you do with it?
Well we are not talking about a desert oasis here but the kind used for arranging flowers and greenery. There is much local expertise and interest to stimulate you into getting your secateurs, soaking that oasis and giving your Christmas decorations a new lease of life as a table arrangement. You could even make them as gifts! Amanda James who runs the Potager garden and is a weel kent face in Dobbies suggests matching green and gold leaves with gold coloured ribbon or baubles. The more silvery greenery like eucalyptus and blue conifers can be stunning with similartoned ribbon. She suggests varying the size of the shrub cuttings is the way to go with hebe, pieris and holly (skimmia or cotoneaster are good ways to get a red feel if holly is short on stalk and berries), using conifer cuttings as a fringe is also good. If you want a wreath you will obviously have to buy a wreath shaped oasis. However if you are keen to give this a go with some assistance, Amanda is running a couple of workshops (8th & 11th Dec). For £14 you will have a ring to use, plus greenery and also a refreshment. You should take strong scissors or secateurs, gloves and your own choice of decorations. Amanda says it is lovely to see how different everyone’s wreath turns out, all attractive. If you prefer to sit and watch, Kinross Floral Art Club have a couple of fantastic demonstrations (Nov 26 & Dec 12th) where you can take in just how it is done, enter the raffle and maybe take one of the masterpiece creations (sometimes there are 7!) home with you. There will be examples on show at the Floral Art stall at the Festive Street Market and the chance to buy some accessories used in the process. The Floral Art Club has been established over 40 years and is always happy to see visitors and welcome new members. Thanks to Alison Morrison from the Floral Art Club and Amanda James of the Potager and Dobbies for their top tips. This sounds like a lovely way to slow down and take time to enjoy festive preparations. Check out Food Floral Sparkle at Loch Leven’s Larder as well.

The Tartan Fairy Company
s a m t s i r h C at Christmas thoughts begin early for The Tartan Fairy Company and other crafters.
While most are still in summer holiday mode we are all busy thinking about Christmas decorations and gifts. The Tartan Fairy (me) and the Head Elf, who is so old he’s stopped counting, both prefer traditional Christmas items. We have come up with a couple of new ideas for the 2013 festive season. We have found that fairy friends prefer to keep their doors on display all year round. That said, there will
be a few Christmas fairy doors for the bottom of trees. Most of them are to be made from local Scottish wood. Traditional Christmas decorations are a must in the Tartan Fairyhouse and they are usually the most effective. Every year we make popcorn garlands always eating as much as we thread.
Top Tartan Fairy tip Slice oranges thinly (slices should be around 0.5cm thick) and lay them on kitchen roll on top of a radiator to dry out. The house smells delicious and as the radiators are usually on anyway, it doesn’t cost to dry them out.
After a day or two drying, these are ready to be hung on some sparkly (or non We also make dried orange sparkly) thread/ribbon and placed on your tree. slices to hang from the tree. Not only do these Hope to see or hear from look great, they cost very little and the oranges have you over the festive period. a super smell. The Tartan Fairy will be at the Swansacre Christmas shopping night at the Windlestrae Hotel on Thursday 7th Nov. If you can’t make it that night you can visit me online on Facebook.
The Tartan Fairy would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas & a happy healthy 2014.
