High Mountain Rush by Kip Fowler Early one morning in July I loaded up my gear and backpacked into the rugged mountains of northern Utah to try and locate a buck to set my sights on during the upcoming 2012 archery hunt. With an over the counter tag for a general public land unit, I knew that it would take a little extra effort and a lot of luck to successfully punch my tag on a bruiser buck come August. But I was hopeful and optimistic as I turned on my headlamp and began the three hour hike into the area I had chosen. Pre-season scouting is something I love and look forward to each year. At first light I glassed up a buck moving through some rocks and ledges high above me. One quick look through my spotting scope told me that my search to find a buck I would try to follow all summer had abruptly ended. The buck I had spotted was already well past his ears with extremely heavy tines and extra points. There was no second guessing on this deer! I was confident that he would score over 200 inches. And with that, the long summer began. Two weeks before the hunt I slipped into his travel area in the middle of the day and set up my bivy-tent. I laid out my sleeping bag and pad and stashed some clothes, water and food. I wanted to get my gear set up and ready to go long before the hunt started. Also, among other reasons, I wanted to get the buck used to having some of my scent in the area. I knew this was taking a chance, but I also didn’t want to move into my bivycamp the day before the hunt started and blow him out of the area at the last minute. Also that day I roughed in two make-shift blinds. One was high in the cliffs in case the buck went high to bed; the other was low in the rocks in case the buck traveled to his lower bedding area. I continued to watch the buck for the next two weeks and fortunately he stayed in his routine, seemingly un-phased by having my bivy-camp set up in the middle of his travel area. I was excited and confident as I slipped into my bivy-tent the afternoon 50

before the hunt and settled in for the night. Opening morning found me tucked into my blind high in the cliffs, hoping that the buck would travel on his upper route. Shortly after daylight I caught movement coming out of the pines below me. A quick glance down told me that it was definitely him and that I had to move fast. I ducked out of the upper blind and slipped behind a rocky spine for cover. As quickly and quietly as I could, I made my way down the backside of the spine and slipped into the lower blind. I was relieved when I realized that the buck was still unaware of my presence. The plan was still a go.
High n i a t n u Mo Rush Closer and closer he came. At 50 yards I raised my rangefinder to get a read on his distance, but he sensed movement and immediately pegged me as I hunkered in the shadows. The next 20 seconds seemed to last forever as we had “the stare-down.� Finally he’d had enough and turned to go. I knew it was now or never. I drew my bow, quickly took aim and released. My arrow struck him hard in the front shoulder and angled into his spine. He immediately dropped like a rock and began a head over heels tumble down the rocky face before abruptly coming to a stop 100 yards below. Just like that it was over. I exploded from my blind and covered the 100 yards of steep and rocky terrain faster than Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt. When I got to my buck, he was even more impressive than I had hoped. He was over 31-inches wide with eight points on one side, seven on the other and a gross score of 212 P&Y. Although my hunt had ended sooner than I had anticipated, I was all smiles as I punched my tag on this incredible high mountain muley! What a rush! 1-877-705-2266
