Big changes to age-old liquor laws in the US took place in 2017. Retail design firm, King Retail Solutions (KRS), has identified the top changes to the laws, and how they will affect grocery stores across the seven affected states.

BIG CHANGES IN LICENSING: 2017 opened up licensing options for stores already carrying a license. 2019 will bring full-strength beer & wine to Colorado’s 3.2 % beer license holders.

STRONGER BEER: Say goodbye to “near beer,”starting April 1, 2019 beer up to 6% alcohol by volume will be hitting the shelves.

LIQUOR ON SUNDAY: AN END TO THE 159 YEAR OLD BAN Minnesota’s yearslong battle has ended. Liquor stores are able to remain open on Sundays.

WINE AND FULL STRENGTH BEER: With the passage of SQ 792, full strength wine & beer are allowed in grocery, and convenience stores.

TOTAL OVERHAUL: 1ST TIME SINCE PROHIBITION Pennsylvania made huge changes eliminating Sunday restrictions, allowing for wine sales in grocery, and an added price control beyond the original 18% markup. Need more choices? Distributers can now sell you volume in 6 packs, or less.

THE FALL OF THE ZION CURTAIN (MOSTLY): Changes in Utah’s “Zion Curtain” laws are allowing for not only an 88% markup for liquor and wine, but a 66.5% for beer with more than 4 percent of alcohol by volume in state-run stores. Distance, and barrier requirements are being reduced. Social club designations can now apply for a single bar license.
