Welcome

The South Hams at its very best... As the leading estate agent in The South Hams we are delighted to be increasing our exposure of property in this exciting new magazine. It is particularly pleasing to be marketing a selection of wonderful homes alongside other very successful companies and brands.

One of the most interesting observations we have seen for a while is that the presentation of properties is paramount to attract the current demand. It would also seem that properties in need of modernisation are not tempting the buyers unless they are presented as really good value for money.

2012 saw a significant improvement in the sale of prime waterfront and country homes across the area with many sales being agreed over £1,000,000. We also saw a number of new contemporary homes being sold off plan so properties presented to a high standard situated in strong locations continue to attract genuine interest from buyers across the country.

This is in stark contrast to previous decades where people would pay a premium for a property that was in need of updating.

There is no doubt however that the banks are not making it easy for home buyers at present although we do hope that the new amounts of funding introduced by the government earlier in 2012 will improve matters.

As we move into 2013 we believe that good quality homes, situated in strong locations, presented well and priced competitively will continue to attract strong interest. We are certainly looking forward to another successful year and we hope that you enjoy casting your eye over some of the properties that are featured in this publication. Marcus Lucock

Sharpham Wines Come and Taste the Experience We have been making award winning wines at our family run vineyard on the banks of the River Dart, just downstream from Totnes, since 1981. We are a small and friendly bunch, who work hard to make the best handmade wines possible. We are very passionate about what we do here at Sharpham and are always striving to be as good as we possibly can be. We are at the forefront of vine growing and wine making in the UK and Sharpham Wines are widely recognised as producing some of England’s most outstanding wines. Our wines are stylish and offer intense fruit flavours and aromas. They are made from hand picked grapes varieties grown on our own sheltered slopes overlooking the River Dart. Traditional and New World techniques are employed in our winery resulting in a range of wines that offer intense fruit flavours and wonderful fresh aromas. The wines are light Fand refreshing and because of their lower alcohol levels they fit nicely into the current trend for healthy drinking. We have a long pedigree for making quality wines as our wines consistently win awards at national and International competitions. In addition, our wines always pass the Quality Wine Scheme and because of this they are recognised as Quality Wines, not just Table Wines. We hope you enjoy our range of wines. www.sharpham.com

The South Hams a district of six market towns, Totnes, Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Modbury Salcombe: Located on the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary, Salcombe’s extensive waterfront and naturally sheltered harbour gave rise to its succes as a shipbuilding and sailing port and, in modern times, tourism. For a small place Salcombe has a rich history. During the Civil War Salcombe was the last Royalist stronghold in the country. In the19th century Salcombe was a major centre for shipping in the fruit trade, with vessels travelling to the Mediterranean, Newfoundland, the Caribbean and beyond. Also, during the Second World War Salcombe became a base for the US Navy and, on 4th June 1944, a US fleet sailed from Salcombe to Utah Beach, Normandy, as part of ‘Force U’. Salcombe is surrounded by picturesque villages, magnificent coastal scenery and stunning beaches. There are activities aplentyhere; walking the coastal footpath, sailing in the estuary or enjoying a leisurely ferry trip. However, if this doesn’t tickle your fancy why not enjoy the wonderful selection of unique and varied independent shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants here Images overleaf by kind permission of Bangwallop, Clare Booth, Nick Shepherd, Norsworthy Photography and Explosures.

Totnes: is always fascinating to wander around. There are few English towns where the thousand year-old shape of the original borough can be seen so clearly, or where past and present are so closely interwoven. Many have responded creatively to the attractions of Totnes, but one of the best descriptions was given nearly four centuries ago by the Devon writer Thomas Westcote, who called it ‘this city-like town, with pleasant soil, fruitful country and healthful air’. All these attributes are as true today as ever.

Dartmouth: Set on the estuary of the River Dart, the pretty riverside town of Dartmouth has long been known as the location for Britain’s largest naval college, but in recent years it’s also established itself as a favourite seaside escape. Dartmouth became strategically important as a deep-water port for sailing vessels. Indeed, the port was used as the sailing point for the Crusades of the 12th century. The town today is a wonderful place to explore and contains many medieval and Elizabethan streetscapes. Many of the buildings here are listed, including the beautiful ‘Butterwalk’, built in the mid-17th century. There are a surprising number of chic shops and boutiques dotted around town, not to mention an astonishing concentration of upmarket dining. Dartmouth also offers plenty of streetside cafes and delightful indie gems keep you busy!

COMPLETELY SOUTH HAMS

Kingsbridge: has been the main market town in the South Hams for centuries. The town formed around a bridge in the 10th century between the royal estates of Alvington and Chillington, hence the name Kingsbridge.] During the 19th century the town was especially active in coastal shipping trade, exporting cider, corn malt and slate. Situated at the head of the Kingsbridge estuary, today Kingsbridge is a major tourist destination, thanks to its proximity to the spectacular South Devon coast and being located within the ‘South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. People come from far and wide to meander along its streets, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the variety of unique experiences on offer here.

THE SOUTH HAMS • 025

Ivybridge: Dating back to the 8th Century, Ivybridge boasts a rich and colourful history, traces of which can be detected in and around the town. has enabled the town to be used for Mills as well. There were three Mills in Ivybridge, one still survives today, all powered by the constant waters of the River Erme, the elixir of life for the town. The River Erme is now part of the attraction of Ivybridge flowing through the middle of the town and drawing many tourists to photograph it’s beauty in the heart of the town centre being set in a magnificent edge of moorland tapestry it’s no surprise that Ivybridge attracts many walkers, there are numerous books available both in the town and nationally informing the reader where to start their walks and of the many sights that can be seen during the trip. As well as the moorland walks to the north there are also many excellent walks to the south in the picturesque Erme Valley Trail. Walking enthusiasts will know that Ivybridge marks the start of the Two Moors Way.

Modbury: is a very attractive small country market town, rich in character with many fine buildings. Its steep streets with close knit frontages give the town a pleasant and dignified air. Much of it contained within a conservation area. It is by virtue of its ancient charter that Modbury calls itself a town, and although small, it has all the attributes of a thriving village with a strong sense of community.Overlooked by the 13th century St George’s Church, Modbury’s many Georgian buildings lend the town an air of quiet elegance. Take time to explore the numerous interesting craft and small friendly shops clustered around the Exeter Inn, formerly a coaching house in use since Elizabethan times.

MITCH TONKS

A Perfect dozen Twelve of the leading chefs in the South Hams

Award winning food writer, restaurateur and fishmonger Mitch was an accountant with little knowledge of the fish trade before he opened a fishmongers in Bath in 1995 and has since gone from strength to strength, now also having The Seahorse and RockFish Restaurants in Dartmouth and RockFish Grill in Bristol. The Seahorse has just won two awards: for ‘Best Restaurant’ in the much-coveted ‘Observer Food Monthly Awards 2012’ and for ‘Best Seafood’ in the prestigious ‘The Good Food Guide Editors’ Awards 2013’. Meanwhile, RockFish in Dartmouth has just been voted onto the final shortlist for ‘Best Independent Fish & Chip Restaurant’ for the third year running, once again placing it in the Top 3 fish & chip restaurants in the UK. As Consultant Chef to South Sands Boutique Hotel & Beachside Restaurant in Salcombe, Mitch has helped infuse the menu with a true flavour of the sea, resulting in a mouthwatering array of fresh fish and seafood dishes. Mitch is one of the fish industry’s most vocal advocates of sustainability and through his restaurants and writing encourages the British public to eat more varieties of fish from sustainable sources. His RockFish restaurant in Dartmouth is now MSC certified and he uses MSC Norwegian cod and haddock on the RockFish menu with additional seafood sourced mostly from the South West Fisheries, particularly from Brixham where Mitch lives. Mitch is frequently to be found in the kitchens of his restaurants. He has written five books and also has an iPhone app all about seafood. Stuart Downie

innovative Head Chef at South Sands HOTEl, tells us about his pursuit of delicious yet simple food, the importance of local produce and rising to the challenge of the seasons… The heart of South Sands Hotel is undoubtedly the Beachside Restaurant, from the gentle hum of mornings to the buzz of afternoons and the vibrant energy of evenings. The spacious Restaurant was specifically designed to make the most of the natural light – which floods in through French windows running the length of the room – and of the magnificent views across the estuary and rolling countryside of East Portlemouth. At nightfall, clear skies reveal a magical backdrop, as the moon hangs above the glistening sea, surrounded by a sprinkling of stars. The relaxed yet refined, smart but casual, chic yet sophisticated environment embodies the very spirit of the Hotel and, indeed, of Salcombe itself. Since taking up the post of Head Chef at South Sands in July 2011, Stuart Downie has revelled in the exciting and refreshingly innovative environment. He has a solid background in fine dining, having only ever worked in establishments with at least two prestigious rosettes, but it’s immediately clear where his heart and focus lie, “I want to cook simple, honest, unpretentious food astonishingly well, using the freshest and highest quality ingredients.” www.southsands.com

ART IN THE SOUTH HAMS • 063

Jackie Harmer meets with South Hams based nautical artist Paul Barclay It was going to be a great pleasure for me to meet and chat with the man behind the name in Dartmouth. The name Paul Barclay has become synonymous with Dartmouth. Paul has cut his teeth in the boatyards and the Marina being involved in the boat business for many years before setting up on his own 12 years ago to commence the development of his own, very individual, brand. I drove down into the town on a beautifully sunny November morning to be greeted by the twinkling waters and stunning waterfront that is Dartmouth. It isn’t difficult to see where Paul draws his inspiration and as I drove around to Oxford Street and parked outside the showcase windows of the shop I felt quite excited at the prospect of meeting and finding out more about this very talented local artist. Paul met me from his studio which occupies a corner of his shop – he was currently working on two special commissions – more about those later – but I was keen to know how it all began. Over a frothy coffee from Alf Resco (very handily place just across the road) we chatted about his family background and where it all began. Paul’s great, great grandfather was born and bred in Scotland and was a locomotive designer in the early days of steam and trains. Paul has taken some of the history from his heritage into his modern business with one of the plaques he designed in the style of the railways now holding pride of place on the first major traffic island as you approach Dartmouth! His father was a potter and illustrator for most of his life and Paul and his brother inherited both of these talents – Paul as the illustrator and his brother now turning pots in Tiverton.

Paul was obviously aware of his talent for many years before turning it into a business. During his time as Senior Dockmaster at Dart Marina he dabbled with illustrating. A major break came shortly after he took the plunge and set up on his own trying to establish himself as one of the leading artists in the South West. Paul was asked to design and paint the prestigious Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta programme cover. Paul continued his illustrating and progressed to painting and designing on yacht canvas. One of these designs caught the eye of an American yacht designer who commissioned Paul to visit America and design a range of merchandise for his outlets up and down the USA coast. Progress was good and Paul felt confident enough by 2005 to launch his own yacht wear label and also to open his flagship retail shop and studio aptly called Nautical Voyages. The retail shop is not only filled with gorgeous paintings (some of which fetch in excess of £8000) but also with charming nautical themed furniture, objet da and clothing from sail cloth jackets to aprons, cushions to coffee cups. All carrying the now famous yacht brand. The shop is a delight to browse around whether looking for gifts, something personal or just for inspiration. Add to that the fact that the artist himself is probably painting on canvas in his corner studio always happy to chat to you and I think you can see it is rather a special mix. Painting on canvas is not Paul’s only style. He will happily take on commissions to design, paint and produce merchandise of any kind to order. As an interesting example of this he has recently worked with Dartmouth Naval College to produce an original painting on canvas which was presented to the College Commandant at a ceremonial dinner

It is, says Ferrari, a convertible, a GT and a sports car all under one retractable hard top roof. It is Ferrari’s first ever front-engined, V8 road car, the first with a directly injected engine, the first with seven gears, and the first with a double clutch transmission. In short and for Ferrari, it is a revolution. Piloting a Ferrari, pretty much anywhere always feels good. In the past I’ve driven a 612 Scaglietti in the wind and rain of South Devon, an iconic F430 around the racetrack at Monza and have even been allowed behind the wheel of a very trusting pal’s 458 Italia on the mean streets of Chelsea. And while each experience was lush, leathery, tumescently sensual and boyishly grin-inducing, the new Ferrari California likes to deliver something rather different. Our Ferrari California kindly supplied by Ferrari North Europe was a £152,000 standard car with over £100,000 of ’extras’ thrown in for good measure. This is the fourth model series for Ferrari - and the first new production Ferrari with no direct antecedent since the Dino 206GT was launched in 1968. Some things, however, remain the same.

Its chassis and body are all aluminium like every other Ferrari in production and, while Ferrari claims the 4.3-litre V8 is all new and cites the fact that even its bore and stroke are different to the 4.3-litre V8 in the F430, it does at least concede the two engines share block castings in common as, indeed, they do with the 4.7-litre engine Ferrari makes for Maserati and Alfa Romeo. In the California it develops 453bhp at 7750rpm and 357lb ft of torque at 5000rpm. Ferrari claims this latter figure when quoted as a specific output (83lb ft per litre) is a world record for a normally aspirated, petrol-powered car. The new gearbox is made for Ferrari by Getrag and, following a generation of front-engined Ferrari practice, sits as a transaxle between the rear wheels. Ferrari does not quote a gearchange time because as the next gear is always pre-engaged, the shift is ‘effectively immediate.’ There’s a small philosophical shift in the California’s suspension, which now comes with the double wishbones you expect at the front, but eschews them at the back, preferring a multi-link arrangement. Like all other new Ferraris, carbon ceramic disc brakes are standard. ➜

The hard-top folds fairly conventionally, by stacking the rear windscreen on top of the roof, whereupon both sections disappear under the boot cover; but this being a Ferrari, it has to do it quicker than everyone else. For most convertibles, a time of around twenty seconds to turn into a coupe is the norm. We timed the California at fourteen seconds. If you are fortunate enough to have the means to do so, the California should be right at the top of your list. When I think of driving the California, and then of driving any of the cars that could possibly stand as a rival to it, I can conclude only that if anything is worth this level of outlay, this car is. The fact I’d even have one over the undoubtedly quicker F430 Spider, because of its better balance and its superior usability, should tell you everything you need to know about whether

Rabbit and ham pie Nobody can resist a good pie. Local wild rabbit & gammon from free range Devon pork make this the perfect winter warmer. Prepare it in advance and put in the oven ready to return to after a Sunday morning stroll along lanes once deep and green, now cut back hard, affording views over the muted colours of the countryside. Serve with some boiled potatoes & rainbow chard both smothered in knobs of melting butter the colour of the winter sun. Ingredients for a pie for 6-8 people You will need a pie dish and funnel 1 wild rabbit – skinned & jointed 500g diced green gammon ham 1 onion peeled & cut in half 1 whole carrot 1 celery stick 1 bay leaf 10 white peppercorns 125g butter 125g plain flour 2 tbsp coarse grain mustard 100ml double cream Chopped parsley Salt & pepper to taste 1 egg beaten with an equal quantity of milk 500g pack puff pastry

Method Place the rabbit & ham in a large pan & cover with cold water – bring to a simmer, then discard the water. Start again, this time adding the onion, carrot, celery, bay & peppercorns. Bring to a simmer and leave to gently bubble away for approximately 2 hours until the meats are very tender. Remove the vegetables, bay & peppercorns. Reserve the cooking stock. To make the sauce cook a roux using the butter & flour and slowly ladle in the stock beating well after each addition until you have the consistency of a sauce that will just coat the back of a spoon. You will not necessarily use all the stock. Pick the meat from the rabbit & mix it in to the sauce with the ham, cream & mustard.

Taste, then season with salt & pepper if necessary. Add the fresh chopped parsley. Allow to cool. To make the pie, cut the pastry into 1/3rd for the lid and 2/3rds for the bottom. On a floured work surface roll out to the pastry then line your dish. Place the pie funnel in the middle, fill around it with rabbit & ham. Egg wash the edges of the pastry and place the lid over. Crimp around the edges well, so the filling does not escape & cut a hole for the funnel to let the steam escape (if you don’t have a funnel just snip a crossed hole with scissors). Egg wash the top and bake in a medium (170ºC) oven for 11/2 hours. Happy Hunting! HappyHouse rambling! visit www.newwalkbrasserie. com

Brewin Dolphin can trace its heritage back to 1762 In 1698 stock dealers are expelled from the Royal Exchange for rowdiness and start to operate in the streets and coffee houses nearby. In 1762, John Dawes is among stockbrokers who form a club at Jonathan’s Coffee House in Change Alley to buy and sell shares. It is the beginnings of The London Stock Exchange and his business would eventually become Brewin Dolphin. Since that time we have seen the Industrial Revolution, two World Wars, the rise of the Internet and a tenfold increase in the UK’s population. 2012 sees the celebration of the company’s 250th anniversary. Glen King talks to Brian James, Divisional Director and Head of Office for Brewin Dolphin Plymouth. She discovers how a personal approach to investment management has stood the test of time; the Plymouth beginnings and a fascinating history spanning two and a half centuries…

Brian James Head of Office Brewin Dolphin Plymouth

John Dawes

After leaving university in 1978, Brian began his financial career at KPMG, as a junior auditor soon rising to the position of audit senior. Following a long period of successful career progression, Brian joined Gerrard in 2003 and qualified as a Chartered Financial Planner in 2007. He left what became Barclays Wealth in 2008 when he went on to join Brewin Dolphin’s Nottingham office. In 2011 Brian moved to Brewin Dolphin Plymouth to take up the role of Head of Office. He specialises in financial planning and is a member of the Group’s Financial Planning Business Action Committee. “Brewin Dolphin has flourished due to our ability to grow and move with the times. By embracing new technologies and working practices but maintaining the values that are at the core of our business the ethos of the company has remained unchanged. We stand apart from much of the financial world because of our belief in getting to know each individual client and offering a truly personal service. Our philosophy is that each of our clients should have direct access to the people who handle their money and that portfolios should be created according to individual needs,” explains Brian.

Everything at Brewin Dolphin is about providing a personal and bespoke client service. When making decisions each Brewin Dolphin investment manager will be guided by the client’s own situation and objectives and the Group’s investment philosophy. This ensures that each individual client will benefit from personalised advice as well as a consistent and disciplined approach to the management of their portfolio. Brian adds: “Our investment philosophy is straightforward. We look for three desirable attributes that identify investments which will potentially make money for our clients: n A ttractive valuations relative to growth prospects n N ews flow drives prices and we particularly look for announcements which may change company profit forecasts n I nvestments with positive price momentum are attractive when viewed in conjunction with valuation and news flow.” Brewin Dolphin Plymouth can trace its roots back to George Street Chambers in 1863 as Westlake & Co., a firm that was established by Devonian, Francis Hole Westlake. Born in 1815 Francis started his working life running the town mills in his home town of Kingsbridge. By 1862 he was in Plymouth working as a junior partner to a firm of stockbrokers called Hopwood.

Francis Beer Westlake He was later joined in partnership by his only son, Francis Beer Westlake who was born in 1847, at the renamed Westlake & Son. Throughout the years the Plymouth firm survived and prospered in the charge of a variety of partners; even through such difficult times as the slump of 1929 and the drastically reduced trading during two World Wars. In 1914 the Stock Exchange closed down for a time and the partners, both keen golfers, reputedly passed the days practising putting in the George Street Chambers offices. 1931 saw a move to St. Andrew’s Lodge in Lockyer Street. In 1942 during the devastating Plymouth Blitz, the partners dealt with burning fire bombs in their offices, on no less than six occasions. After the War, there were two further moves; the first to Armada House in 1962 and the second to Princess House in Plymouth, where the firm remained until 1988. The firm later moved to larger premises in St Catherine’s House, at the junction of Notte Street and Lockyer Street, becoming the group administration centre for the Allied Provincial group. In 1994, Allied Provincial was acquired by City investment Group, King & Shaxson, and traded under

the name of Greig Middleton until March 2000 when it was acquired by insurance group Old Mutual. At that point the trading name became Gerrard, a name retained when the group was acquired by Barclays Wealth, part of Barclays Bank, in 2003. By 2002 Gavin Price had become Head of Office and the firm made its first move to out-of-town premises at Plym House, near Marsh Mills. In July 2007, the decision was made to break away from Barclays with the directors and staff moving en-masse to open the Brewin Dolphin office at Langage Business Park. Following Gavin Price’s retirement in March 2011, Brian James was appointed Head of Office. Brian concludes. “To be in business for 250 years is a feat that very few firms accomplish. Our success is built on time-honoured values – relationships built on trust and confidence, bespoke service and the desire to accommodate each client’s priorities and aspirations. Staying true to these traditions gives us a strong platform for continued growth.”

Other key requirements to consider are parking, views, broadband and outside space. These factors can have implications on the letting potential of a property - for instance, having a parking space with a property in Dartmouth is a very valuable asset! Seeking the advice of a letting agency will help you to choose the most suitable property with the best letting potential. The experienced locally based company Coast & Country Cottages is regularly consulted by prospective new owners looking for guidance - with over 425 holiday properties exclusively in Salcombe, Dartmouth and the surrounding countryside, the agency looks after more five star award winning cottages in the area than anyone else. Coast & Country Cottages offer property owners peace of mind. From cleaning, laundry and keeping the garden tidy, to 24 hour emergency assistance, they go that extra mile so you don’t have to.

Visitors to Dartmouth can also stroll along the picturesque banks of the River Dart, browse the boutique shops and art galleries, or relax in one of the many cafés lining the cobbled streets. With so much to enjoy in the South Hams, it is no wonder that the area is popular as a holiday destination. If you are looking to buy a property in South Devon with the intention of successfully letting it as a self-catering holiday home, there are some important factors to consider. Choosing the right property, which will appeal to a wide range of people visiting the area, will ensure your investment is a profitable one. Firstly, the location of a property needs careful thought - the individual towns and villages can vary greatly in terms of personality and appeal. Dartmouth is popular all year round, whilst Salcombe is more seasonal, but fabulous for sailing enthusiasts. The standard of a property is also very important - increasingly the discerning customer is looking for VisitEngland Four or Five Star standard properties, with contemporary furnishings, such as a kitchen with top of the range appliances.

Emma Cardew, Head Chef, The Old Bakery. Emma has a deep rooted affection for this, her local area. Emma was born and raised in Salcombe to fishing business parents she’s probably eaten more lobster than had hot dinners! Emma joined The Old Bakery in April 2011. She arrived here still in training for a Professional Cookery qualification but it soon became apparent that she had not only a natural talent for flavour, balance and presentation but also the ability to manage a busy professional kitchen. “The Old Bakery was my favourite local restaurant, so to come and work here was very exciting. It has proved to me that my passion really does lie in food and great quality ingredients. I am constantly learning new flavour combinations, applying new techniques and using the amazing produce this area has to offer. I love the autumn for its great root vegetables like parsnips, celeriac and horseradish, the delicious fish and shellfish that come in to season and the lovely Christmassy flavours I get to play with! Cranberries, clementines, chestnuts and game. My dream is to study classic patisserie and perhaps have a business of my own, but for the time being I am very happy here working alongside Juliet and the team. I love the feeling of a newly prepped specials board and a busy weekend ahead!”

COMPLETELY SOUTH HAMS

staying in the south hams • 137

A Guide to Buying a Holiday Home Buying a holiday home is a big decision. Letting through a trusted agent, such as Toad Hall Cottages, is a great way to earn additional income. A letting agent will offer key advice on how to improve the property’s potential. Certain factors require consideration prior to the purchase of a holiday home. Think about the property from a guest’s point of view- is it in a popular holiday area; close to beaches or national parks are often the most popular. If not, it may need to have other attractions- a swimming pool, a games room, a great garden or proximity to visitor attractions. Running costs need to be worked out prior to purchase, ensuring the property will be a sound and profitable investment. You need to consider; cleaning, changeovers, insurance, repair costs, bills and marketing costs/ agency fees. Advice can be sought from a reputable holiday lettings agency. Perhaps most important is whether to use a lettings agent or choose to “go it alone”. Going it alone may appear the most cost effective method as there

are no agency commissions to pay, however this is often not the case: It is a very difficult process for an individual to market their property- where to advertise, advertising costs, creating your own website and getting visitors to see it. Organising legal contracts and terms and conditions is a costly and lengthy process. Another vital factor is arranging the changeovers and caretaking. Finally there is the customer service, you have to deal with enquiries, bookings, payments and in some cases, complaints. An agent will look after all of the above, meaning that you can relax, safe in the knowledge that it is being looked after by an expert. Choosing an agent can also be difficult. Look for one that has been established for a good length of time and has good feedback. Find one that you work well with and importantly, trust to promote your property. Agents such as Toad Hall Cottages have experience and knowledge of the holiday lettings market and will help to make your holiday home ownership a stress-free and profitable experience. www.toadhallcottages.co.uk

Life’s just beachy at South Milton Sands Without a doubt, the beachhouse is seriously seaside. This stylish ‘shack’ comes from the ebullient trio behind its boutique hotel sibling: the much-lauded whitehouse in Chillington, and their hot hospitality DNA is very much in evidence. Nestled at South Milton Sands, between Thurlestone and Hope Cove, informality rules at the beachhouse with guests grabbing a big bench, kicking back, checking out the blackboard, ordering up and discovering that getting stuck in with fingers, wrists and arms is pretty much compulsory. The beachhouse crew loves to share - so Head Chef Ally Wray’s menu is designed so everyone can get involved and lap up a bit of their fellow diners’ food. Seafood straight from the ocean; kind of rough and ready so the infectious fresh tastes can really rock and roll. Expect to find hot chilli and garlic prawns, cracked crabs, mammoth surf & turf platters, ‘Moules Frites Madness’ or whole lobsters – all served in big beachhouse bowls or ‘bins’ with crisp fries on the

side No-one can deny that seafood is the super hero, but there’s options galore for hungry meat lovers or veggies too. Founding partner Tamara Costin says, “At beachhouse we have rubbed together some of the great ingredients that make up whitehouse, added a large glug of the stunning Devon coastline, mixed well, and created a new laid back foodie destination for all to use. We see the sea every day but we never fail to be mesmerised by our spot and can’t keep away – even on our rare days off!” www.beachhousedevon.com

The Royal oak INN Bigbury No-one can deny the power of childhood memories and for Hugh Ridgway, the evocative experience of a bottle of proper ginger beer and packet of Smiths crisps, complete with the little blue salt bag, has recently borne its influence on a major new move. Hugh and his brother Steve are local Devon boys, brought up on Stadbury Farm at Aveton Gifford, and that ginger beer and crisps experience took place when he was just four, in their newly purchased establishment, The Royal Oak at Bigbury. The Ridgways are also the owners of the acclaimed St Moritz Hotel near Rock in Cornwall, so it’s natural that they will be bringing their experience to bear on the Bigbury property. Honouring the time-tested traditions of a classic inn, the freshly reworked pub has undergone a fitting refurbishment that echoes the property’s original design and charm whilst reflecting the inn’s namesake, HMS Royal Oak.

The Ridgways are also bringing the heavyweight experience of their St Moritz chef, James O’Connor, whose background also includes positions with Claridges, The Berkeley, Bovey Castle on Dartmoor and Damien Hirst’s 11 The Quay in Ilfracombe. An impressive wine list from Christopher Piper is also available as well as a raft of local ales on tap. Hugh says, “Interestingly, historically ‘inns’ provide not just great food and drink but rooms and lodging as well as stabling and fodder for the guests’ horses. Whilst we can’t quite stretch to the stabling part these days, we can do everything else, and do it so that the intriguing past of The Royal Oak comes alive again.” www.theroyaloakbigbury.co.uk

Local service to owners and tenants can only be provided by a ‘one stop shop’ local agency. Salcombe Holiday Homes and Dartmouth Holiday Homes are only in these towns and have been for more than 25 years. We provide service to 230 homes that cannot be provided by booking agencies or caretakers. We visit each property between every changeover to ensure cleanliness and readiness of the property for incoming tenants. If problems are revealed cleaners will be recalled and/or tradesmen engaged to correct problems. Our Directors and staff are well known and part of the community. They hold positions in town associations and work hard for the benefit of the communities. Owners are kept in touch with community developments so that they also feel part of the communities and are accepted as such. Regular visits to the properties enable staff to match tenants to properties. We know how well equipped or accessible a property might be. We know what can be seen from each window, the size of the microwave, the availability of local parking, the route to the beach and the standard of food and drink in the local! Most importantly, because we have known our unique towns for many years we know the appropriate pricing for a property and the number of weeks of likely occupation. So often we see agencies with no experience of the area or lettings in the area giving nonsensical advice of likely income. If the owners have little or no use of the property themselves then income will of course increase but Salcombe Holiday Homes and Dartmouth Holiday Homes have no restriction on the number of weeks owners live in their own properties. If we were to go outside these areas this would only be in special circumstances for special properties such as large houses, whose owners are well known to us, in which we specialise.

Salcombe Holiday Homes and Dartmouth Holiday Homes operate separate websites to market these properties and the large number of luxury, exclusive properties featured in their portfolios. We provide a booking and management service for fees that are generally below those charged by others for booking services only. Whilst concentrating on our local territories, we are also members of Cottageline, a group of sixteen privately owned agencies who operate to the same high standard and represent over 5000 properties nationwide. The Cottageline website enable members to share their advertising costs and this provides an important addition to our advertising. Cottageline also provides strength in lobbying Government and Visit Britain for the benefit of owners and tenants. Such representation is also provided through memberships of the English Association of Self Catering Operators (EASCO). We enjoy our business, not only because we work in two of the most beautiful towns in Britain but also because we work as a team with our owners and their tenants. Our business is people, working as partners together to ensure that our owners are confident that we will do our utmost to protect, and rent their property and provide tenants with a wonderful holiday which they wish to repeat in the future. We ask our owners to provide a property in which people on holiday are happy to live. For our part we provide first class standards of service to our partners. The owners do not seek Visit Britain or similar quality assurance accreditation as many owners do not wish this because the properties are often first and foremost home. They do, however require that all properties are of three star and above equivalent. The vast majority are four and five star equivalent.

The best of these are additionally marketed under a separate website www.exclusiveselfcateringdevon.co.uk

and for visitors to take home and relive some happy times and maybe inspire others to make a visit to this unique and outstanding piece of England.” So writes Nigel Evans in his Introduction. The South Hams forms part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and includes some of the most attractive coastline, countryside and estuaries that can be found in Great Britain. Nigel Evans’s photographic journey reveals this beautiful landscape at its best. The towns of Totnes, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kingsbridge all have chapters of their own featuring some of Nigel’s unique images. Highlights of his book also include the enchantment of the River Dart valley, the sweep of Start Bay, and the attractions of the Salcombe/ Kingsbridge Estuary. The mystery of Burgh Island and the delights of Bantham beach are followed by the charm of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo. Specially taken photos of The National Trust properties of Greenway, Coleton Fishacre and Overbecks capture their unique spirit and will remind visitors of enjoyable days spent in these historic houses and gardens.

life’s a beach...

or so for Nick and Jo Jenkins who just four years ago successfully set up Safari&Beach, a bespoke tour operation based in the South Hams and specialising in spectacular safari and beach holidays to Africa.

COMPLETELY SOUTH HAMS

TRAVEL • 205

Nick and Jo moved to the South Hams from Putney with their two daughters, Eliza and Tabitha, to follow their dream of living and working in this stunning area. Nick says, “why would we want to be based in London when our business directs people into the wilderness or remote beaches of Africa? Basing our company in the South Hams has much greater resonance with the holidays we put together for our eclectic mix of clients”. Jo marvels at their fabulous way of life and what a joy it is to bring up a family here whilst easily combining her work commitments at Safari&Beach. Safari&Beach offer a real variety of trips to east and southern Africa. Every trip is tailor made to suit the individual. The easiest safari and beach destinations are Tanzania and Kenya but Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Rwanda all combine well with Zanzibar, Mozambique, Seychelles and Mauritius. Tanzania is home to the infamous Serengeti, showcasing the wildebeest migration, but also the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater and lesser known Selous Game Reserve, all providing rich game viewing. With the Zanzibar archipelago running alongside, this makes a hop over to the beach an easy option. Similarly, in Kenya, the Masai Mara which also sees the migration and Amboseli, shadowed by Mount Kilimanjaro, are popular choices. And a short flight to the beach makes Kenya a good safari and beach choice. However, those seeking a more extravagant safari head to the Okavango Delta in Botswana or the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Here are some of the most famous lodges in the world with a price tag to match but with an unrivalled density of game at your camp side. The more intrepid, head to the sand dunes of Namibia. This is the land where time forgot and is like nowhere else on the planet. The scenery literally takes your breath away and there are some weird and fabulous wildlife experiences.

206 • TRAVEL

For those seeking more adventure, gorilla trekking in Rwanda, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or shooting the Zambezi rapids are hard to beat. Safari&Beach safaris can be as luxurious or as raw as their clients’ desire. This can be glamping to the extreme: air conditioned tents, antique furnishings and elephant sized beds with the highest thread count white linens. Or a more mobile tent, literally pitched there and then to maximise the opportunity of seeing the best wildlife from your bedside. Beachside accommodation has a similar variety of options. One of Nick’s favourite places to stay is a small boutique lodge on a beautiful beach in Zanzibar where the sand resembles the finest plain flour. Jo favours the barefoot luxury found along on the Kenyan coast or islands off Mozambique. According to Nick, getting the beach accommodation right is often the tricky bit of an itinerary because it’s this part of the holiday where clients really want to relax, be comfortable, yet know they are in Africa – on safari, you can only be in Africa! Safari&Beach has grown tremendously since its birth out of the Jenkins’ study at home.

The company is based in The Warehouse in Kingsbridge and now employs six people, who all share a passion for Africa and quality of life. We are all very lucky say the team. Fortunately, it’s really important we have very recent experience of the places we recommend (and those that we don’t)! So the team are often hotfooting off to Africa for a recky and will be only too willing to share their enthusiasm with those who are thinking of a safari and beach holiday to Africa. Give them a ring or pop in. Safari & Beach Travel Ltd Tel: 01548 854 125 www.safariandbeach.com info@safariandbeach.com The Warehouse Prince of Wales Road Kingsbridge TQ7 1DY
