Welcome Unless otherwise stated, photos used in this Report do not necessarily identify bursary recipients. In some instances names have been changed.

From the Treasurers Alderman & Sheriff Peter Estlin Treasurer 2006-16

It has been my privilege to serve as Treasurer and Chair of Governors of King Edward’s for the last ten years. It is humbling to think that in that period, the Bridewell Foundation has enabled over 100 children per year living in challenging circumstances to benefit from a King Edward’s education. Providing these young people with a secure ‘home away from home’ and, with the support and expertise of the King Edward’s staff, enabling them to make the most of that opportunity is fundamental to the founding mission of 1553. It is an opportunity I was fortunate enough to have when I came to King Edward’s as a young boy in 1972 and I take great pleasure in reading that our young people value it as much today as I do. We rely on the generosity of our supporters to continue in our mission and we are grateful to you, our donors, and to our partner children’s charities, City Livery companies and notably the City of London Corporation, which has been supporting us since our foundation. As I hand over my Treasurership to Mrs Justine Voisin to concentrate on my role as Sheriff of the City of London and, in some small way, pay back their generosity, I can assure you that we as a governing body are as committed to the Bridewell founding mission now as our antecedents were in 1553, 1867 and beyond. And we remain grateful to you for your commitment.

Mrs Justine Voisin Treasurer

I am honoured and delighted to be taking on the role of Treasurer of this historic Foundation that is truly transformational to the lives and outcomes of so many children. I look forward to working with all of our supporters to continue to further the vital work and tradition of the Bridewell mission.

Thank you for your support 4

John Attwater Headmaste r Thank you: your work to help the Bridewell Foundation continue to do what it has always done is historic, outstanding and of untold value.

There are few organisations who can recognise their founding mission alive and well after 463 years, still fulfilling the fundamental imperative to provide our children, as they grow up, with what they need to prepare them for life. I am delighted that the work we do for all our pupils is recognised as excellent, and that those who need support exceed expectations in so many ways, as this Report demonstrates; I hope it also shows it is about much more than statistics or inspection reports can relate. Our work as a school, your support as past and present pupils, parents, friends and donors from all walks of life, our combined enterprise as a community, is a wonderful expression of confidence in the children and school we support, and a clear statement that such investment in their futures is worth making. This confidence rubs off on our pupils and their families, provides ambition and often hope, and is the engine-room for their motivation, achievement and fulfilment. That is a fantastic thing, and it is a huge privilege and reward for me to see it happen here every single day. So, thank you: your work to help the Bridewell Foundation continue to do what it has always done is historic, outstanding and of an untold value. I hope what you read here will inspire you further and introduce others to this very special mission.

Giving makes Two beneficiaries of the bursary programme, Rudo Dube and Ed Kernick, were amongst those who shared their stories and achievements at an RNCF event attended by HRH The Princess Royal at King Edward’s in April.

Rudo Dube I was introduced to King Edward’s through Surrey Young Carers - an organisation that provides support to families when a family member is ill. My dad has struggled with mental illnesses. When things were really bad he would go to hospital - it was difficult because Mum would be sad and I missed him. In January 2009 we were delighted to hear I had passed the tests and been offered a place, and that most of my fees would be paid by the School and the Royal National Children’s Foundation (RNCF). We would never have considered boarding school without their encouragement, nor been able to accept the place without their help. When I came to King Edward’s I wasn’t homesick. There was always a relaxing and calm environment here. It was not that I didn’t want to be with my parents, and look after my Dad, but I knew when I was here they could focus on each other, knowing I was having fun and concentrating on school work. From the beginning I joined in lots of sports and activities that I hadn’t taken part in before - shooting, croquet and mastering the school climbing wall. Most of all I

s a difference have enjoyed hockey which was new to me and have played hockey for the school since First Year - I am now Captain of the First Team. Being at King Edward’s has helped me engage with academic study more than I would have considered before. There are visiting lecturers and external speakers; visiting scientists come to our Café Scientifique to talk about their work and research. I particularly enjoy science and hope to take a degree in Neuroscience. This is a result of my Dad’s problems and the School’s encouragement to study science. I hope to study human behaviour, how things go wrong, how things can be solved. It is interesting to realise that if there is one small link missing in your brain, it can affect your life so greatly. There is much to understand and it will be exciting to become involved in discoveries. I want to thank the School, the RNCF and everyone else who has helped me over the last 7 years. Without you I would not be in the position I am now, with an exciting future. Rudo is studying Biology & Psychology at Newcastle University.

“Scientists come to our Café Scientifique to talk about their work and research.”

Giving makes Ed Kernick I always enjoyed challenges and looked forward to being away from home and getting used to a new environment. It seemed fun in a Boarding House with other boys my age. I was quiet in the first term, but soon came out of my shell, taking every opportunity to try new sports. I particularly enjoyed hockey (I now captain the First Team) and have played more cricket here than ever before. Previously I sung in choirs in Primary School and at Church and at King Edward’s I joined Chapel Choir straight away. The first Christmas I did the solo at the start of the Carol Service. Last year I took on my biggest role: the role of Sky Masterson in Guys & Dolls. Every year I help with the Inter-House Drama and Music competition - a good way to get the boys in the House working together. It can be hard at first when people want to do their own thing instead of working for the House, but after a while more boys become involved, until eventually everybody is doing something. It’s a good feeling to see it all come together on stage with lights, costumes and the music. Encouraging people to work together in the House is part of my role as Head of House. I thought if I got to this position, I wouldn’t just ‘tell’ the boys what to do, but would encourage and advise them so they want to work together for the good of the House, in the same way I do. I hope I have earned the respect of my peers.

s a difference Ed meets HRH The Princess Royal

In spring 2016 I challenged myself to cycle from King Edward’s to St Bride’s Church and back. My route took me from King Edward’s to Christ’s Hospital (our sister school in Horsham), onto the Imperial War Museum in Southwark (where the school was located for some time), then Fleet Street and St Bride’s Church, (where Bridewell Palace used to stand), before heading home to Witley. I took a slight detour in the first part of my ride, getting a bit lost on my way to Christ’s Hospital. The country lanes were a challenge, but I was at home cycling in London, when I got through the traffic quicker than my support car, and had to wait for them to catch up. It was a long ride back to King Edward’s and I arrived in the dark at 8pm. I had called a friend to let him know I was nearly home and he must have told others. As I came up to the front of the School I was surprised to see a crowd of people waiting for me - I was moved to see so many people cheering and waving. There were two reasons for doing the cycle challenge. I wanted to push myself physically, doing something unusual for someone in my position, my age, just before my exams. And I wanted to raise money for bursaries, so other pupils can have the same opportunities I’ve had at King Edward’s.

Ed raised £7,916 on his cycling challenge for the Bridewell Foundation.

Looking back at my time at King Edward’s I see how I have been changed. The School took the framework that I was and fixed it a little. It has strengthened everything in my personality and ambition. I am now able to look forward to my next challenge with confidence and enthusiasm. Ed is at the University of Reading studying Construction Management.

Changing live The Bridewell Foundation’s mission of helping society’s neediest children get a better start in life remains as true today as it did in 1553. As we approach 2017 we count among our Foundation Bursars children who have experienced neglect or violence in the home, young carers and those being cared for by relatives, those with parents unable to work or care for their children due to illness, mental health problems, disability or ongoing trauma, those living with siblings who need constant care, children living in dangerous environments and who are in inadequate housing or even homeless. Whilst it is increasingly recognised that a boarding education provides the encouragement, routine and structure often missing at home there are fewer and fewer institutions able to offer this opportunity to disadvantaged children. King Edward’s Witley continues to be in the vanguard of the assisted boarding movement, but we could not continue in our mission to help vulnerable children without your ongoing support. King Edward’s has a long tradition of music-making, both choral and instrumental. Thanks to the generous Knapton-Cavill bequest of 5 years ago we have funded instrumental music tuition to all new pupils in 1st and 3rd form, regardless of their ability to pay. The scheme has been a great success but the funds are running low and it is an aim in our appeal year to replace those funds. Photos used in this year’s Report reflect this aspect of our work.

10

es since 1553 Celebrating 150 Years at Witley In 2017 King Edward’s celebrates 150 Years at Witley. We will mark the anniversary with special events in London and Witley. We are launching a fundraising appeal to commemorate this significant date in our long history. King Edward’s School was founded in the City of London in 1553. In 1867 the School moved from its home in Southwark, where it had been housed since 1830, to the green and spacious site we occupy today. The Surrey Advertiser at the time called it one of the healthiest and most romantic spots in the county of Surrey. The new building was formally opened by the President, Alderman William Taylor Copeland, on 5 April 1867. Initially, only the boys made the move, leaving the girls in Southwark before King Edward’s School London closed in 1922. The ‘First Girls’, as they call themselves, made a welcome return to the School, now in Witley, in 1952. Surrey residents were reticent about the new School on the Hill, as it is known by many locals to this day, but were soon reassured by the orderly and respectful conduct of our lads, and upon the good moral tone that appears to pervade the School. The School continues to enjoy the support of the county today. We frequently welcome local Mayors and Councillors to key School events, we are one of the largest employers in the borough of Waverley, and we continue to welcome children of local residents as day pupils or flexi-boarders to the School.

The focus of the appeal will be a second Telethon in 2017 and we will be enlisting the support of our local and global network to achieve this goal and keep us in this ‘place’: ‘A place to lodge Christ in’.

LE

N

The challenge now is to secure our future in Witley and continue helping needy children for the next 150 years and beyond. To rise to that challenge and commemorate 150 Years at Witley we are launching an appeal to raise an additional £150,000 for bursaries at King Edward’s: that’s £1,000 for every year in Witley.

The Old Witleians’ Fund continues to contribute approximately £16,000 per year to the fees of 12 individual pupils and, with an Enrichment Fund, pays for additional trips, activities and equipment that their families cannot afford. This fund is being wound down and will be closed in 3 years’ time. Donations to the bursary programme now go to the Bridewell Foundation.

Greatly valued Royal support On 21 April 2016 HRH The Princess Royal visited King Edward’s for the first time, in her capacity as Patron of the Royal National Children’s Foundation (RNCF), one of our partner charities in the bursary programme. Her Royal Highness followed in the footsteps of her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and great-grandmother, Queen Mary, both former Presidents of Bridewell. The Princess Royal had a comprehensive tour of the School, meeting and speaking with a great many pupils, most of whom benefit from bursary support. Her Royal Highness said how impressed she was with the School, a great endorsement of our work on a truly memorable day.

Queen Mary House renewed To meet the needs of young people today, Queen Mary House (QMH) has been completely refurbished. In September we welcomed back our President, HRH The Duchess of Gloucester, to re-open the lower school boarding house. QMH’s £1 million investment includes exterior and interior refurbishment, modern kitchens and open, spacious play areas, adding a new lease of life to this magnificent 19th century building. Together with increased matron staffing, QMH now offers a real ‘home away from home’ for both boys and girls, enabling siblings in the lower school to be housed together for the first time.
