For 162 years, God has blessed Allen Chapel AME church to be a strong, vibrant and transformative institution of worship and service to the Southeast community of Washington, DC. Through the years Allen has been led by some extraordinary individuals who have been the under shepherds that brought a tremendous vision, moving Allen forward each and every decade. Allen’s history is replete with consecrated, and committed members that made sacrifices that caused them to give financially their very last because they loved God and loved their church. Allen would not be where it is today if it were not for the sweat and labor of our forefathers and mothers who have gone on home to be with the Lord. The names of those faithful servants are listed in the Lambs book of life in glory and we salute those saints of the past who have caused Allen’s present and future to be so promising. We celebrate our God who has been our help in ages past and our hope for the years ahead. God has been tremendously kind to Allen Chapel AME Church; bringing Allen from its Capital Hill location, to the little white church, and to its present location at 2498 Alabama Ave. What a mighty God we serve, whose hand has been upon Allen in incredible ways. As Allen continues to move forward, Allen’s present is filled with many opportunities for greater service and its future looks brighter. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. In His Service, Pastor Michael E. Bell, Sr.

SECOND EPISCOPAL DISTRICT AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH 1134 11TH STREET, NW SUITE 300 WASHINGTON, DC 20001 THE REVEREND DR. WILLIAM PHILLIPS DEVEAUX, PRESIDING BISHOP 202 842-3788 September 16, 2012

Greetings in the name of our Precious Savior and Risen Lord on the occasion of this magnificent One Hundred Sixty-Second Anniversary of Allen Chapel AME Church to the Rev. Dr. Michael E. Bell, Pastor, First Lady Lena Michelle and their family. My wife Pam and I are privileged to acknowledge and honor this special and noteworthy achievement with you. We proudly commend the hard work, dedication and effort that brought you to this time of celebration. The DeVeaux Family and indeed the entire Second Episcopal District Family rejoice that Allen Chapel has been a vibrant worship center bringing souls to Christ for nearly two centuries. Yet the Allen Chapel ministry has extended beyond the walls of the sanctuary to encompass the District of Columbia’s Ward 8 Community. Thus, the Allen Chapel AME Church Family should be doubly proud of its Christian Service and commitment that Christ occupy first place in your lives. Be assured that your voices, your service and your talents are sorely needed in today’s world as well as in our beloved AME Church. I am confident that our Father in heaven will look down upon your 162 years of faithfulness and say well done. Sincerely,

William Phillips DeVeaux William Phillips DeVeaux Presiding Bishop

Dear Allen Family, First, the Anniversary Souvenir Journal Committee gives honor to God for allowing us to reach this important milestone of the 162nd anniversary of this branch of Zion that we call the “Cathedral of Southeast.” There have been many challenges along the way since the Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church’s humble beginnings in 1850, but still God is faithful. He has kept us and blessed us to do His work so that souls could be saved, lives transformed and hope restored. Secondly, we thank you, our Allen family, for entrusting to us the awesome responsibility of preparing and documenting a brief overview of the history of the past 162 years for future generations. While it was a major task, it was also a labor of love and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve. We extend special thanks to each member of the Committee and to all of you, our Allen Family, for your contributions and support. Continue to pray for our church and may God continue to bless us as we strive to do His work. Yours in Christ, McKinley Crudup, Chair Kristen Bell Malcolm Drewery Gabriel Harper Avery Johnson Bette Murphy Gail Reed

Greetings From The Trustee Board, The Trustees of Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Today, would first like to thank God and the Trustees of yesterday, on whose shoulders we stand, for bringing us this far by faith. We are honored to be servants of God as we endeavor to fulfill our duties as caretakers of this great Cathedral of Southeast. God has blessed our church which has a rich history of loyal, faithful and dedicated pioneers. It is said, “What we are to be, we are now becoming.” With God’s help, Allen is becoming a pillar of strength for the weak and hope for the hopeless as it continues to provide services for the disenfranchised in our community. The Trustee Board of Allen Supports the ministry of our pastor and the Vision he has for our church. The Trustees continue to provide service to the congregation as it is our goal to be good stewards over what we have been charged to oversee. We pray for God to continue to bless our pastor with wisdom and strength as he makes the difficult decisions that help lead Allen from the usual places to an extraordinary place in Him. I think I can speak for all our Trustees when I say, “We will do the best we can to continue to perform our duties as Trustees of this great edifice.” Respectfully Submitted, Trustee Board of Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church Malcolm P. Drewery, Vice-Chairman

In Loving Memory of Sis. Estelle E. Scott The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1 In loving memory of my mother. Sis. Estelle E. Scott was a woman of God and served as President of the Allen Stewardess Board #2 for 20 years. She loved and shared herself with all those she met. She is the Mother of Mildred V. Strawder, who has and will continually love and miss her Mom. We love you, and you will always be in our hearts, but we knew that God had a special place for you in heaven.

The Strawder Family

In Loving Memory of Bro. Eric Thomas Jones, Sr. In loving memory of my son. Bro. Eric Thomas Jones, Sr., was a hard worker at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was an active member from 1976 until his passing in 2003. He was a member of the Men’s and Gospel Choirs. He served as a Trustee and Usher with an open heart. He loved to smile and always had an encouraging word for others. He welcomed the opportunity to do a kind deed for others. His favorite book of the Bible was the 23rd Psalm. Rest in love and in peace, Son, Father and Brother.

Your Mom and Brother

In Honor of Sis. Mildred V. Strawder Mother Mildred V. Strawder has been a member Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church for 54 years. She has served on the Stewardess Board #2, the Class Leaders ministry, and has been a member of the Flower Club and the Velma Patterson Club. She continues to serve as a volunteer whenever needed. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
