Welcome Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself. Norman W. Brooks
Christmas is a very special time of year. A time to rejoice, a time to share with loved ones and a time for gift giving. It is the perfect opportunity to show our love and appreciation for those in our lives. It is also a favourite time of year for “crafters” as we look for ideas for handmade gifts and for new and inspiring home decorating items. Our research for this issue uncovered a talented fellow Australian designer, Barb Smith and her beautiful hand painted buttons. As we drooled over Barb’s buttons all manner of project ideas jumped into our heads, to the extent that it was difficult to decide which ones to bring to life. We were like excited children in a lolly shop! It is this very excitement that we hope to foster in you as you ponder over this special issue, and that you have fun bringing your own Christmas projects to life for others to enjoy.

Create your very own Christmas Gathering wall quilt with this adorable button set, or hand embroider the design for an alternative look. Either way this project will add a rustic Christmas feel to your home. Showcase your quilt in a timber frame or bind with fabric and hang as desired.
Pattern Step 1 ~ If you are working the embroidery, trace the entire design onto your background fabric using the water soluble marker and a well lit window or lightbox. If you are using the button set you will only need to trace the hill outline and the verse.

STEP 1
Step 1 ~ Trace the circles included in the pattern onto the dull size of the freezer paper. Three circles form the front section and one forms the back. Cut out on the drawn line. Iron shiny side facing down onto the felt and cut out. Peel off the freezer paper. Handy Hint—to achieve an even circle, dash the drawn line rather than tracing as a solid line. Shop for Button

HANDY HINT
Use offcuts of fabric from your quilt binding to wrap around the polystyrene balls. If you have a 2½” strip of left over binding, tear into ¼” strips. The amount of fabric required varies depending on the size of the ball you are wrapping.
Making your own Christmas tree ornaments can be a fun craft activity that children will love to share as well. Using strips of torn fabric will give an ideal rustic look to your Christmas tree, and embellishing them with beads, will give a personal touch. Enjoy making these quick and easy ornaments.

In the 1800s, starting around the time of the Civil War, thrifty homemakers would use scraps of wool or felted wool from old clothing, blankets and hats to create designs for mats or rugs. Using coins as templates, they created circles and each piece was then stitched using blanket stitch, which is where the name "penny" rug came from. Sometimes a penny was stitched inside the mat to make it lie flat.
Bright red berries among the spruce, this wool felt penny mat will make the perfect Christmas table centrepiece.
