Welcome to our Fall Sixth-Year Edition! This issue is yet another issue filled to the brim with local companies bringing their message and business valley-wide. Autumn is in the air and it’s also in “The Urban Liaison Magazine,” so please sit back, relax, and read through our valley’s local storybook. You will learn some new information and understand your valley even more. As you read, the stories and check out the ads, please remember why, after six years, the magazine is still being created and published. It’s still in print because of the importance of the Buy Local and Support Local Lifestyle Movement. In this issue, we showcase some wonderful local restaurants. Eating local is so important to our residential food producers and our local economy. Are the restaurants you frequent using locally grown food? There are many locally owned restaurants in our valley, making it a mission to use as many local food options as possible. Another new section is sponsored by Sysco, and In our “Foodies Section” we will be covering “Local Neighborhoods and Their Food Print.” In this issue, it’s all about the Hyde Park area. ith 70% of the American population being overweight and/or obese it shouldn’t come as any shock that countless people want to improve their health and maybe shed a few pounds. Obviously, changes need to be made regarding diet and exercise, but one area that is often overlooked is a person’s mindset. Believing ultimately can make or break one’s success. We see this all the time in professional sports, business, and even fitness. Having a vision for what needs to be accomplished, the drive to achieve greatness, and most importantly, believing is critical. Henry Ford says it best: “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” Simple and true. The battle is won or lost long before you even set foot in the gym, but it’s a little more than just belief—you have to shift to a mindset of “positive outcome.” In other words, focusing on what is desired opposed to what is undesired. Esther and Jerry Hicks, authors of The Law of Attraction look at it from this perspective: From your place of lack, you will attract only more of that, and that is the reason most diets do not work: You are aware of your fat—you are aware of your body looking the way you do not want it to look—and so when it gets bad enough that you cannot stand it anymore (either from your own perspective or because others are scowling at you), then you say, “I can’t bear this negative place anymore. I’m going to go on a diet, and I’m going to get rid of all this stuff that I do not want.” And yet, your attention is given to the stuff that you do not want, and so you hold it to you. The way to get to where you want to be is to give your full attention to what you do want, not to give your attention to what you do not want.”

By overly examining what you do not like about your body and/or physical health only perpetuates the problem. There needs to be a paradigm shift for true change to take place. You need to “believe it before you see it.” How is that possible, Jason? I look in the mirror and the mirror doesn’t lie! I realize that we live in a society of “seeing is believing,” but I simply encourage you to reflect for a moment on everything that has changed in the world throughout your lifetime. Fairly recently, we didn’t have cell phones, internet, iPads, etc. Even television hasn’t been in existence for 100 years! The bottom line is that people have vision and the ability to believe it before they see it. The same rule applies when it comes to our bodies and physical health, and the body will go only as far as your mind will allow it to.

Here are a few tips to help shift your focus and achieve the body, health, and life you desire:

WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS: The more specific the better. However, remember to state them in a manner that describes what you want to happen. For example: “I want to lose 20 lbs in 6 months,” “I want to lower my blood pressure to 120/80 or less by next year,” “I want to fit into my old swimsuit by June,” “I want to improve my flexibility so I will feel better.”

CREATE YOUR VISION: More specifically, create a poster board of what you want your life to look like. Find pictures of yourself when you were looking and feeling your best. Do you have fitness goals like running a marathon or competing in a triathlon? Maybe you want to take on new recreational hobbies like rock climbing or martial arts? Find images of these activities and put them on the board! You could even go beyond fitness with your vision. Images of places you want to go on vacation, a certain vehicle you like, the amount of income or job you desire—the sky is the limit. This is a powerful tool. Having an image to view daily naturally puts your subconscious to work towards your goals. Try it…you’ll be amazed at how effective it is! SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE INFLUENCES: Post inspirational quotes throughout your work and home space, read self-improvement books, write daily affirmations, and surround yourself with positive people who mutually want you to succeed. Remember: positive attracts more positive.

Dr. Jonathan Chu is a true gift to Nampa. He is the Medical Director for Harrison’s Hope Hospice and has practiced medicine in the Treasure Valley since 1989. After 21 years of family practice in Nampa, Dr. Chu’s passion for helping patients with life-limiting illness brought him to Harrison’s Hope to work in hospice full time. Although he was and is one of the most recognized and respected doctors in Nampa, he shut down

his practice in 2008 to become a twentyfour-hour-a-day hospice clinician because he saw the value and importance of end of life care after providing care for his own wife during her last months of life. This caused him to look at and approach death differently, so he made a decision to devote his life to end of life care and hasn’t looked back ever since. Although he isn’t required to by regulation, Dr. Chu prefers to visit each one

one of Harrison’s Hope’ patients face to face. Our patients and their families are known and cared for by Dr. Chu. They get to meet with him, ask questions, and interact with him. To Dr. Chu, his patients are real people with real needs, not just names on a piece of paper. His level of understanding regarding pain management and end of life care makes him an asset to his patients, their families, our Hospice team, and the Treasure Valley.

Dr. Chu was recently awarded the “Hospice Physician of the Year Award” in 2013 by the Idaho Quality of Life Coalition. He was also a finalist for the “Excellence in Leadership” award given by the Nampa Chamber of Commerce each year at the Nampa Chamber’s Evening Of Excellence event. When he’s not practicing medicine, Dr. Chu spends his time cycyling and enjoying the Valley’s beautiful scenery.

Maintaining multiple physician appointments while in the midst of a serious illness is both exhausting and stressful for patients and families. End of life is mostly unpredictable and needing to get help can come unexpectedly. Calling to make an appointment to see the physician is sometimes weeks away. The ER becomes the only answer even if the ER can do nothing for the patient. This is very common and I feel that patients and families need to know that they have other options. In a world where physicians are very busy in the clinic and the ER is discouraging, Harrison’s Hope has a solution: Dr. Jonathan Chu, MD. He is Harrison’s Hope Hospice’s full time Medical Director. Dr. Chu became a physician in 1989. He started his practice in Nampa at Family Medical Clinic that eventually came to be known as St. Al’s Medical Clinic on Iowa Street. Dr. Chu had taken care of patients at that clinic for 19 years but in 2010 Dr. Chu decided it was time for a change in tactics. He states that the pressures of a very busy clinical practice left him feeling unsatisfied and did not allow him the time he felt the patients deserved. “Harrison’s Hope as an organization is truly about patient care. Patients and families really do come first. Community outreach, education, and involvement are at the top of our Mission, Vision, and Culture. This is what attracted me to Harrison’s Hope and after testing the waters I decided that it was something I wanted to be a part of” Chu said. “I want to be a hands on physician. Working full time for Harrison’s Hope allows me to make home visits as often as I would like, sitting at bedside with dying patients and helping families with their struggles. I did not want to be a hands off hospice physician signing medical records and orders as needed and showing up 2 times a month for team meetings. I want to remain engaged with patients and families and provide them with hands on care. Harrison’s Hope allows me to be this type of physician. Many of my colleagues have asked me if doing hospice full time is depressing and hard. My answer is no because I never viewed death as the enemy. It is just a part of life and I know I can make a difference and that makes it very rewarding for me.”

When to Call Dr. Chu If you, your loved one, or a patient are dealing with serious illness sometimes it can be difficult to know where to go for help. The unknown can be scary, especially when it comes to someone you love and their health. Harrison’s Hope is available 24/7 to talk about hospice. If you feel like your loved one is declining, call us for an assessment. To qualify for hospice care, we typically look for two or more of the following symptoms to help us determine hospice eligibility: 1. A major qualifying event such as a hospital admission 2. Recurrent infections including pneumonia, sepsis, or urinary tract infection 3. Weight loss over a period of three months

Dr. Chu feels hospice is a calling. It is a very personal choice for him. In 2004 his wife Jan was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Ultimately they were both aware that they could fight some battles with this disease but in the end they would not win the war. Jan died on January 7th, 2007 at home with her husband as her primary caregiver.

SET AN EXAMPLE: "Kids model their parents—they learn healthy, as well as unhealthy, behaviors from watching us. If you eat right and increase your activity levels, they will follow your lead. SET GOALS: Don't focus on weight loss. Instead, have everyone agree to specific daily goals, such as recording a certain number of steps on a pedometer. Charts or goal boards are useful tools to track progress. USE NONEDIBLE WEEKLY REWARDS. A small gift or fun reward as a family (i.e. movie night)—will help reinforce good behavior. Make sure that these healthy snacks are in a visible, convenient spot so everyone can grab and go when things get hectic.

LEARN ABOUT HEALTHY PORTION SIZES. A rule of thumb for an adult is three ounces of protein (size of the palm of your hand), one cup of vegetables, and a half cup of starch. I like to have my clients divide their plates by filling half the plate with veggies, ¼ protein, and ¼ with their starch.

eight loss, relaxation, decreased anxiety, rapid recovery from intense exercise, and better sleep are just a few of the things people are claiming to get from regular floats. It might be easy to dismiss these as wild claims, but advocates have piles of scientific research to back them up.

Imagine spending an hour or two with the one person who is always there— you. This is no common “me time”. It is not you, a bottle of wine, and a good book. Comforting as those “ands” might be, they are an influence. There are also a few other things in that equation—things so comforting or constant that they don’t even register as part of the experience. Some are easy to guess, such as the couch you are sitting on, the phone on the nearby shelf, the weight of a book, the lap blanket providing just the right amount of warmth, or that odd reflection from the TV. There are still more. How about the presence of light itself? The sounds of the neighborhood outside? Even gravity has an impact.

Floatation therapy is about escaping it all. Distilling life down to its absolute essence, where only your mind is present. That can be frightening for those that see “me time” as a method of escaping themselves. Floatation practitioners live in a world that requires no escape. Gary Butterfield said it best in his turn at Tales From the Tank, a regular feature in the Portland Mercury by Float On, “It wasn't about being alone with my thoughts. It was about being alone without them.” With no distractions, it becomes easy to clear out every corner of clutter that has accumulated in day-today life. Without that weight, it is easy to step with a lighter bounce. Centers provide this experience with a floatation tank. Tanks commonly have nearly 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt and about 200 gallons of water heated to skin temperature . This solution looks and moves like water, but is so dense people float on top, despite it being only ten inches deep. Center operators will ask that you shower before and after the experience using the provided shower and body wash. Gentle music is the indication that time is up.

First floats are commonly called a “break-in float”. Getting used to the environment, finding the most comfortable position, testing the neck pillow, and trusting the host to start that gentle music requires some initial effort. While possible to have an amazing first float, many experience only half of one the first time. Float centers commonly default to a 90-minute float and sell starter packages to overcome this small, up front obstacle. By float three, it is 90 minutes of perfection that carries out for three or more days after the experience. Regular practitioners claim the benefits from a 90-minute float will last for a week or more. That is a week of feeling good with less pain, less anxiety, and better sleep.

Scheduled for Wednesday, October 22nd from 6 pm-8:30 pm, the evening will include special pricing on “witchy martinis” and decadently delightful desserts from The Village restaurateurs. While anyone can attend, the event is expected to draw women and their girlfriends to The Village in droves—and it is all for a good cause.

year’s event took place just a week after the grand opening, so it was merely a preview of what a real Witches Night Out could be like. But according to Regional Marketing Director, Ramona Merrill, the response last year exceeded expectations. “We wanted to try a couple things right after opening to see what the market responded to,” she said. “We were thrilled to welcome over 300 women in full costume, with many others attending as well. It showed us that the women in the Treasure Valley have a great sense of humor and love an excuse to dress up and have fun!” This year, the event will take on a meaningful tone. Guests will be invited to buy raffle tickets to win the contents of The Witch’s Wardrobe, a beautiful armoire on loan from Z Gallerie, the Village’s new home furnishings store. The contents will be apparel, gift cards, movie passes, handbags, accessories, and more, all provided by The Village at Meridian Merchants. The value will be a minimum of $1,000. “The donations are still coming in,” said Merrill. “I’m excited to see what we will end up with!”

Unfortunately, statistics also show that often a beloved family pet might be the reason some women do not seek shelter right away, fearing for the loss of the pet, as most shelters do not provide for them. Understanding both elements of the issue will help find solutions. Both charitable organizations are pleased to be associated with the fundraiser

and are hoping for a big turnout. “We hope to see this as an annual fundraiser for these organizations,” said Merrill. “I expect it to get more successful every year.” All combination of harvest decorations, cool weather, and the beauty of The Village setting creates a setting that is pure magic. Roving judges will award prizes for the best costumes, and the stores will offer specials. he term ‘psychic’ conjures up images of dimly lit rooms shrouded with draperies and overpowering incense as you are asked to gaze deeply into a crystal ball. Although skepticism and disbelief have become more of a normalcy in today’s culture, there is still something eerily thrilling when a complete stranger reveals information that doesn’t seem possible for them to have known. The gypsy-like mysticism that many people think of when imagining what a psychic or a reading might be like isn’t quite the case. You won’t be meeting Sheila Martel (popularly referred to as Psychic Sheila) in a dreary voodoo lounge when you visit her at the Shuga Shack. Martel is a friendly and welcoming person, and the atmosphere at the Shuga Shack is open and comfortable.

Always having been someone with a strong desire to help people, Martel worked as a drug counselor at a youth facility before deciding that using her psychic abilities would be a better way to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Going about providing this service proved to be challenging in the beginning. First, Martel began selling “Magic Muffins” around Boise, delicious baked goods with a significant word or phrase on a piece of paper placed inside them. The issue arose that, without a license and commercial kitchen, this practice was illegal. However, a kindly city employee advised Martel that giving the muffins away while charging for a reading would be completely lawful.

It was brought to attention that, according to the wording of municipal law, psychic readings were illegal within city limits. Martel devised a campaign to show the faultiness of the trivial law. She performed readings on the street under the guise of taking passersby down “happy trails” and giving them Magic Muffins before telling them that they had taken part in an illegal activity. The law was soon repealed, making Martel’s practices legal. Martel offers readings, chakra healing, and group meditation sessions at the Shuga Shack and is also available for private parties and events. The Shuga Shack is a place of acceptance and learning and Martel encourages people to come in to open their minds to the psychic powers that are within all humans. daho natives Gregg and Mary Alger did not initially set out to become award-winning winemakers. With backgrounds in agriculture they pursued the corporate ladders of Fortune 500 companies and then ran a successful B2B office products business. In 2006 they had a mid-life epiphany. They decided to sell their home in Eagle, sell their company, buy a vineyard and pursue winemaking. Gregg and Mary’s efforts in building Huston Vineyards have put Huston, Idaho on the winemaking map. After their life-changing decision, Gregg and Mary studied viticulture through the Oregon State University Viticulture/Enology program. Courses in viticulture provided them with a scientifically based understanding of the interaction between grape production and winemaking. Gregg has surrounded himself with experts in the winemaking industry and jokes, “I’ve learned by extensive trial and error.”

Christy Hovey Huston Vineyards is located in the Sunny Slope/Snake River Valley. With its rich volcanic soil and long sunny days the area is conducive to world-class winemaking. In 2008 Huston Vineyards began production of their very first vintage Private Reserve Red. When it was released in 2010 it was the most expensive wine produced in Idaho at the time. That year, the Great Recession began and Gregg and Mary became concerned about the direction they’d chosen. Their concern proved unfounded. Huston’s first premier red wine won gold in the 2010 Idaho Wine Competition. In 2014 their 2013 Riesling also won many awards including gold at the Sunset International Wine competition. Huston’s Chicken Dinner label comprises 70% of their production and is a perfect everyday table wine at an affordable price. You’ll also want to try Huston’s Reserve Chardonnay, a rich and buttery wine served best with entrées such as lobster bisque. Huston’s Merlot hints of smoky bacon with black cherry and their Malbec displays flavors of black raspberry and plum with a spicy finish. Gregg feels that life is too short to not sit down and enjoy an amazing glass of wine. His mantra is, “Great wine and great food equal the best of times.” He believes the wine you serve is an extension of the meal you’re preparing and a reflection of the atmosphere you’re trying to create. The task of finding the right wine to pair with your menu is of equal importance to the meal itself. When asked what is his favorite wine, Gregg replies, “My answer depends on what I’m having for dinner and whom I’m having it with!”

Gregg is a strong advocate for Idaho winemakers and serves as a commissioner for the Idaho Wine Commission. He hopes Idahoans will support local vintners by buying Idaho wines along with locally sourced meat and produce. eridian has quickly established itself as the epicenter of cuttingedge eclectic and boutique eateries—Muse restaurant is no exception. After two months of revamping their space and menu, owners Scott and Chasity Koritansky are proud to announce Muse’s grand reopening. Muse’s menu boasts fresh goats’ milk cheese from their own creamery and food combinations guaranteed to please even the most discriminating palate. Paired with a newly acquired liquor license, Muse promises an unforgettable dining experience. Muse was initially opened as a small bistro showcasing fresh food, fine wine and integrating fresh goat cheese from the creamery next door. In late spring of 2014, Muse lost its chef and Scott and Chasity decided to temporarily close the restaurant. They realized it was an opportune time to redesign both the interior of the restaurant and Muse’s menu to reflect a more contemporary vibe. Scott and Chasity Koritansky are seasoned pros when it comes to the food and restaurant business. Scott previously owned restaurants in the eastern part of the country, and they both run a successful Meridian eatery, The Varsity Pub. Self-proclaimed foodies, this couple visits Las Vegas every quarter to ensure that they are staying on top of food trends. They then bring their experiences back into the kitchens of their restaurants, staying true to their commitment to food excellence. Interweaving their own goat cheese into Muse’s menu is a natural extension of their family ties to the dairy industry. Scott’s father is a bovine veterinarian. He also owns a large goat dairy located in Hagerman, Idaho that supplies the milk to the Koritansky‘s for their cheese production. In addition, Chasity’s father is an animal nutritionist. These two men provide invaluable feedback to the Koritansky’s, helping them create exceptional fresh goats’ milk cheese. Muse serves only freshly procured food and makes every effort to find locally sourced meat and produce. Muse brings in beef fed with cattle

Each steak is smoked on locally grown and chopped apple wood, so the smoky sweet flavor soaks into every bite of each and every dish. You can truly taste the dedication and admiration these people have for what they do, and the wholehearted atmosphere is definitely rooted in where it all began: in the heart and mind of Dillon Wickel. “He sold everything he owned to get this place up and running,” says his sister Kim Wickel, “His horses, his trucks—everything—he sold it all because he believed in this place and he wanted to take the taste of our uncle’s steakhouse (currently in Coeur d’Alene, Wolf Lodge Inn) and bring it into the lives of everyone here.” Dillon says his first priority is buying the best meat possible for the best flavor. His determination and love for Indian Creek Steakhouse is eminent and is reflected in his dishes and five-star reviews. The practice of Veterinary Physiotherapy encompasses cutting-edge specialty techniques that help relieve pain and restore function and mobility for pets. I would drop her off in the morning and would pick her back up in the evening. She never wanted to leave the facility. In fact, she’d always try to go back in the door in which we would enter.” Before receiving treatment, Bianca was unable to get up from lying down and had a diminished quality of life. After treatment, Bianca was mobile and her signs of pain dissipated.

In October, the Caldwell and Nampa Chambers of Commerce feature agriculture in our monthly luncheons. On October 14th (Caldwell Chamber Luncheon) & October 15th (Nampa Chamber Luncheon) we will share the importance of agriculture to our local economies.
