Written by: Tony Noland Table Rock Lake extends 79 miles upstream along the White River and inundates areas in both Missouri and Arkansas. Built in 1959, Table Rock is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Table Rock Lake has become a paradise for boaters, scuba divers, campers, and fishermen alike. Table Rock is a fisherman’s lake and arguably, some of the best fishing on Table Rock is in the Shell Knob area. The convergence of the Kings and White Rivers just West of Shell Knob creates a true Mecca for fishing in this area. When naming Table Rock as one of the Top 10 Fishing Hotspots in the U.S. in 2011, the World Fishing Network (WFN) noted that Table Rock Lake is: “A very popular choice for tournaments and is used commonly by both B.A.S.S. and FLW Tours. Part of the reason is that fishing here is good year round and because it’s not just the largemouth that gets attention on this lake. Both smallmouth and spotted bass are in great abundance on Table Rock Lake, making it a trifecta of excellent bass fishing possibilities for this southern Missouri lake. The lake is well known for its deep water bass fishing from the summer season right through December.” 8

Safe Boating Table Rock Lake is one of the most popular boating and fishing lakes in Southwest Missouri, and boating safety is a MUST. The primary reasons for boating accidents are inattention, alcohol, and not knowing the rules while on the water. • Nationwide, 85 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket • Before you go boating, make sure you know how to handle the boat • Know the rules by taking a boating safety course • Have a designated driver if you must drink alcohol • Persons must be 14 to operate a boat alone and persons born after Jan. 1, 1984 in the state of Missouri must take a boating safety course and carry the card with them while boating or operating a jet ski For information about boating safety classes, contact the Coast Guard Auxiliary at 417-271-9116 or 417-671-2099. Shell Knob is a community of fulland part-time residents scattered along the shoreline of Table Rock Lake with a central shopping area.
There are no city taxes, and county property taxes are comparatively low. Missouri state taxes are among the lowest in the U.S.
The area is beautiful, natural and unspoiled by the problems that plague many cities. Air pollution, noise and traffic are just memories making it the perfect place to enjoy numerous outdoor activities.
Shell Knob has a public library, a post office and a senior center.
While the lake and federal lands make Shell Knob a pocket of peace and quiet, it is not isolated. Springfield, Branson, Eureka Springs, and access to the Interstate Highway System are all within an hour’s travel. Housing is available in all price ranges, and reputable contractors are available should you decide to build. Developments offer surfaced streets, water systems and gorgeous lake views.
Health services include a dentist, two family practice clinics, first responders, and home health care. It is also served by ground and air ambulances and has three excellent hospitals within 30 minutes. While the area considers its low crime rate a plus, the county sheriff provides protection. A volunteer fire department has four stations and has earned underwriter ratings that translate to low insurance costs. Nearly every denomination is represented by a church, and social organizations are too numerous to list here.
