DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE: HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE TEAM AT PARKS AND RECREATION! As 2022 is getting underway, now is the perfect time to recommit your entire family to recreation, fitness and healthy living. Our recreation staff has been working hard to develop and create the wide variety of programs, special events and classes that fill the pages of this 2022 Spring Brochure. With everything from Playground Camps to Tennis Lessons, Adult Softball Leagues to Stroller Strides, there really is something for every member of your family! Come join us and make this spring the season for fun. I wish you a happy and healthy 2022!

STAFF: Meet the newest member of our team, Recreation/Aquatic Coordinator, Scott Buckholz. Scott has been with the Department since October. He is responsible for the oversight of all of our waterfront facilities, day to day operations of our Pavilions at Penfield Beach, and an integral piece of our marketing team. He has been a wonderful addition to our team and we look forward to seeing what he has in store for Fairfield next! Next time you’re at one of our events, be sure to stop by and thank him for his creative new ideas and hard work.

PARKS: Pine Creek Park, located at 155 Pine Creek Avenue is a 1.5 acre park. This hidden gem is tucked away in a wonderful neighborhood! The park has a covered picnic area, benches, and a recently renovated playground. If you’re looking for a new park to take your little ones to, look no further, Pine Creek Park is the park for you.

PROJECTS: As usual there are quite a few projects that are taking place over the next several months. Through the ARPA funding process the Town will be replacing the playgrounds at the following parks; Dover, Highwood, Lincoln, Melville, and Tunxis Hill. We expect installation of each of these playgrounds to take place this spring. The Department is also making very good progress on the renovations and upgrades to Gould Manor Park. We expect to open the park completely this spring barring any unforeseen delays. We also have work taking place at Lake Mohegan to restore our beachfront due to the damage sustained during Storm Ida. We look to have this work completed by Memorial Day to ensure an on-time seasonal opening. Finally, the biggest project we are currently working on is our Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The Town of Fairfield is embarking on this forward-thinking venture as it seeks to determine the types of community service, sports and recreation facilities that will be needed based on current and future anticipated usage. At the same time, existing recreation facility properties need to be analyzed to determine their existing conditions, limitations, opportunities and potential to support additional use. We will continue to pursue ways that we can improve the quality of life in Fairfield while offering great programs and activities, both active and passive, at an affordable rate! Once again, stay warm and enjoy the remainder of your winter season and we’ll see you in the parks.

Anthony R. Calabrese, MS, CPRP Director of Parks and Recreation Town of Fairfield

The mission of the Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department is to provide quality leisure opportunities in safe, clean and healthy facilities, and to offer comprehensive inclusive programs at a reasonable cost for residents of all ages. 3

BIGELOW CENTER for SENIOR ACTIVITIES EDUCATION

Educational programs are offered throughout the year on a variety of subjects - from health to history and authors. Our Thursday evening programs during the spring and fall pair an interesting lecture or activity with dinner. Our Lifelong Learners classes are led by truly distinguished instructors and cover a variety of interests. Lifelong Learners classes provide intellectual stimulation in a relaxed, casual atmosphere that lets you learn at your own pace. Past registrants receive a course catalog in the mail. Others can pick up the current catalog at the Bigelow Center. Classes typically cost $20 per course plus a $10 registration fee valid from September through June each year. If you’ve taken courses elsewhere, you recognize what a bargain this is.

EXERCISE

The Bigelow Center offers a wide variety of exercise programs tailored to the particular needs of the adult community. Among the exercise programs offered are Tai Chi, Zumba, Body Balance, Yoga, Weight Training, table tennis, and pickleball. The center also has the Pacers walking club. With rare exceptions, most seniors can participate in exercise programs--even those who have disabilities or limited motion. Our highly trained instructors will carefully evaluate the member’s physical condition and work with seniors to help reach your maximum potential. Remember, it’s never too late to get into shape. Exercise is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself! So move any way you can! Click here to learn more.

INCOME TAX PREPARATION

Every tax season trained AARP volunteers are at the center to help seniors complete federal tax forms and file them. There is no charge for this service, but an appointment is required. The schedule for free tax assistance is published in the center’s newsletter.

GAMES

The Bigelow Center also has a number of groups that play a variety of games such as Pinochle, Chess, Bunko, Mah Jongg, Scrabble, etc. These games provide mental stimulation and the opportunity to socialize with people who share your interests. In addition to table games, there are more active games such as pool, table tennis, and pickleball for the more athletically inclined.

NEWSLETTER

The center publishes a monthly newsletter, the Bigelow Center Newsletter, which includes a complete calendar of events and articles of special interest to seniors. The newsletter is available at no charge at the Bigelow Center, both libraries in town, Independence Hall, the YMCA, Fine Arts Hairdresser, both Stop & Shops in Fairfield, and other locations in town. In addition, the newsletter is available online.
