There’s nothing like being amongst a group of like minded girls to inspire and spark your creativity. Girls who just “get” what you do. Who understand this documenting life thing. Who don’t look sideways with a puzzled look when you take a photo of your lunch and instantly upload it in a click of a button to your Instagram account.
Working from a home office is often very isolating and it’s sometimes hard to gauge the reaction and response to something you are doing online.
Girls who don’t need an explanation as to why you are taking a photo of your new shoes or your morning cuppa and girls who firstly know what washi tape is and secondly, totally understand the importance of having a million rolls of the stuff!
So what’s in this issue?
I was recently invited to travel to the coastal town of Port Lincoln in South Australia to teach at the escape2create retreat. Run by Meredith Treloar and Amanda Hall - these girls know how to pull off a successful event. It’s a sell out each year - all 80 spots snapped up in like four minutes! 80 likeminded, paper loving, everyday moment recording, memory keeping girls. I hadn’t taught face to face for a few years and was a tad nervous but every last girl at that retreat made me feel welcome and it was an absolute pleasure to be there with them all. I taught a Project Life style class and it was brilliant to see them all embracing the concept. I was thrilled to learn that many of them knew about Jot and what’s more - they LOVED what we are doing with the magazine. That was incredibly rewarding.
And it was awesome to be out there meeting some of our readers face to face and seeing the excitement and passion for memory keeping, Project Life, scrapbooking and paper crafting. I came away having met new friends and with a renewed interest in teaching and feeling happy that we were going okay here at Jot Magazine.
We meet Jodi Sanford from Fancy Pants Designs who shares a little about the company she started from home and has built into a successful business celebrating their tenth year in the scrapbooking industry. You can read Jodi’s story on page 30. We welcome back Sian Fair with another brilliant article. This time Sian is encouraging us all to see our own town through the eyes of a tourist for a fresh perspective on where we live. Read Sian’s story on page 80. And columnist Shari Brewer joins our team of writers this issue, kicking off her regular everyday life style column called Dear Diary. Meet Shari on page 136. Plus the Jot Girls have been creating tons of projects and layouts galore. I hope you enjoy Issue 5 and THANK YOU for embracing Jot and for the ongoing support you have been giving us.

I received this wrapping paper on a birthday gift and I just had to keep it. Using it for inspiration, I chose to create a quick 8x8� sized layout with a black and white photo so that I could focus on the colours in the leaves.
I used only the colours in the paper in my layout.
The shapes of the leaves were hand drawn on patterned paper in a similar way that the leaves on the paper are drawn.

I used similar elements of doodling around the frame of the photo. The leaves on the paper have intricate doodling designs which are really beautiful up close.
I chose to use a black and white photo so it wouldn’t compete with the already busy and colourful design.

FABRIC! I LOVE IT! You can sew it into gorgeous creations such as quilts, wall hangings, cushions or make plush toys, hair accessories, jewellery items and decorations. And hey, we wear it...everyday! It’s just so hard to resist all those pretty patterned fabrics. I have quite a healthy stash of fabric happening after collecting it for quite some time. From vintage fabrics including thrifted sheets and pillowcases to more modern cotton quilting and garment fabrics - I have quite a collection.
My fabric stash could almost rival my scrapbooking paper stash. Almost! Fabric and scrapbooking? Oh yes, it works. It so does! Who would have thought it hey!?! Over the years, scrapbooking has branched out from being just paper, photos and stickers to now using many more different textures, fibres, and layers. For those who have been in the scrapbooking arena for some time, you may be familiar with the concept of incorporating fabrics into your papercrafting – so this article will most likely be a refreshing reminder of its goodness. And for those that are relatively new or revisiting the scrapbooking world and seeking new and funky ideas – then this may be a fun creative revelation and inspire you to add fabric to your next project. I have put together three different projects for you to get you started in adding fabric to your projects. Plus fellow Jot Girls Lauren and Kim are here with a few additional fabric layouts to share as well.

FABRIC SCRAPBOOKING
idea #1 For my first fabric project, I have used fabric and cut it into frames to use on my journaling cards. I have made two 3x4” and one 6x4” cards. It was just a matter of cutting the fabric to size and then cutting the inside section out to make the frame. I sewed around the outer edge in straight stitch and then zig-zag stitched around the inner edge. Adding some stamped, written, or painted text and some small embellishments added the finishing touches to these cards. And they are ready to be used in any pocket style album - or you can even use them on a layout. Whatever tickles your fancy!

I have been wanting to create a page around this fun and silly family photo - from the blooper reel of course, but they do make the best snapshots sometimes hey! I wanted bright, bold, and fun colours to complement the nature of the photo. The photo was set at the beach so I chose blue and yellow - and while selecting fabrics from my stash, orange and pink made the cut as well. I have always been attracted to pages that repeat a certain shape on it, whether it be circles, hearts, squares, stars, triangles - which is what I have gone with here. I started cutting out circular edged triangles from my fabric with the intention of creating a few pie chart style background pieces but as I started placing the triangles onto the page, I decided that randomly placing the triangles in a few lines was the look I was after! I love that about creating - sometimes the end result is completely different to how you started and thought it would end up. Using some watered down acrylic paint in charcoal, I splattered it across my page background. I also painted some triangles to include in the background and stamped on some random words. I used a variation of letter stickers and my own handwriting for the title pieces. I love the brights teamed with the black and white photo and the black accents - it just makes the page POP!

idea #3 After creating the triangles for the layout, I had quite a few off-cuts and scraggly bits of fabric - so I chopped them into small pieces. Using some Kraft cardstock, I made a 6x6” square card. I drew on a heart shape and then attached double sided tape over it. I randomly placed the fabric bits on the tape in a jagged fashion but still keeping the heart shape. At the sewing machine, I set my stitch to zigzag and secured the fabric pieces down. I stamped on some words in the heart’s centre and added some bling and the card was done!

The Silhouette Cameo cutting machine performs out of this world when it comes to fabric! Using the Silhouette brand fabric interfacing, I ironed on the interfacing to the reverse side of my chosen fabric. I used the Silhouette fabric blade in the machine which is designed especially to cut fabric. Design your desired layout elements using the Silhouette software. Create letters for titles and shapes like swirls and flowers to use as embellishments. Insert your fabric face up and cut out your shapes! Clap your hands and spin around and say out loud ‘that looks amazing!’

HOW-TO
These are really simple flowers you can make using little strips of paper or fabric. I start by tearing the paper or fabric scraps in small moon shapes so that they are easy to sew in a circular shape. Beginning with a circle shape, sew each piece layered over one another, around the circle shape until you come to the middle. You can make it as layered as you want or more simple with just a few sewn pieces. Keep layering over the top until your flower is the desired shape and height, adding some stitched tulle as well for added texture. Attach your finished flower to your layout, card or adorn a beautifully wrapped gift with a finished flower. jotmagazine.com 29

fancypants This year marks the ten year anniversary of Fancy Pants Designs, a scrapbook brand created by Jodi Sanford back in 2004. Jodi lives in Utah, USA with her husband and four children, Dawson, Abbi, Marli and Holden. Here we catch up with Jodi for a chat about life and business and balancing it all. What inspired you to start Fancy Pants Designs? I was a big time scrapbooker. I t’s all I did in my spare time. I really wanted to make some extra money, but more importantly, I wanted to create products that weren’t on the market that I thought would be cool.
Did the business take off immediately or did it take some time to build your brand? It did take some time. Our first year, I wasn’t sure if we would make it, but we found our niche about half way through the year and really started moving forward!

While you would be an old hand now at exhibiting at CHA, you debuted Fancy Pants Designs back in 2005 - was that a nerve wracking or exciting experience? It was extremely nerve wracking! We had borrowed a bunch of money to start this up and our only hope was for it to succeed! It was a very scary step for our family.
How was Fancy Pants received at that very first show? It was well received, but we were just a small company in a big industry, so we had a lot to learn…and really quickly to keep the business around!
What three words sum up the essence of Fancy Pants Designs today? Creativity. Ideas. Fulfilment.

I loved reading that your business started from home and has grown into such a big enterprise now. It must be so rewarding to take an idea, take that leap of faith and launch a business that then grows and flourishes. What has been your biggest achievement so far? Making it through the first year was definitely a big achievement, but we’ve had so many along the way. I’d say our biggest achievement is keeping our business strong for this long with a very talented, but smaller team than anyone might guess! We’ve ranged from one employee up to eight, but never more than that! Currently, there are only six employees, making it all work---that’s a great achievement for us and proof that when we work well together we can do amazing things!
From starting up with just you and your husband, how has your role changed over the years to what it is today? I would say my role has changed a lot in some ways, and not so much in others. From the creative director side, my role is very similar to our first release… but, I have some amazing talent and design behind me now, so that has helped with the creative stress! It’s hard to “reinvent the wheel”, but overall, we’ve really managed to stay true to our style, while keeping things creative and fresh. On the business owner side, it’s changed quite a bit having to direct employees and making sure that things are being accomplished and that we are continuing to grow as a company. When it was just Jared and me, we only had to worry about each other making the business work. You must work well as a team to still be in business together all these years later - what is the secret to working harmoniously with a business partner who also happens to be your husband? I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I know some people say they couldn’t work together, but we are pretty easy going--maybe sometimes too much! We support each other in the things that need to be done, but we definitely have defined roles. Jared is creative (though he’ll never admit it), but you won’t catch him creating anything fancy with our products. He handles all of our shipments (incoming and outgoing) as well as most of our employee affairs at the office--all the manly man stuff! I do most of my work from home, aside from weekly team meetings and events, so we spend a lot of time on the phone making quick decisions and conferring with each other. We have a lot of fun and like to keep things happy.

What marketing works best for you in getting the word out about Fancy Pants Designs? Trade shows have primarily been our focus over the years, but we are really gearing ourselves toward our great fans through social media, emails, etc. We want to be in touch with the fans using our products and make sure that we are creating what they are looking for. That’s why I started this business and being so tied up in the day to day business has taken away the time I used to have to create! So, social media and online advertising are great marketing opportunities to really reach those we want to hear from.

What is the best thing about what you do? The best thing about what I do is the ability to create something fun and unique and see it come to life--in an actual product form. Especially unique items that you don’t really know how they will look until you see it---and the response from users of the product! If they love it, we know we have a great product.
What is the most challenging? Feeling like you aren’t getting the inspiration you need to create something new! After 10 years, it’s hard to keep your style the same, but still offer a whole new look… it can be really hard.
What does a typical day look like for you? For me, because I work from home, it’s a little chaotic to be honest! Trying to balance the kids and work can be difficult, but I do a lot of my email and product direction during the day. Then, I look forward to quiet time at night to get more work done--communicating with our international partners, creating projects of my own and planning for the next day! It’s kind of like a 24/7 job that’s always in front of me, but I take plenty of breaks in between to run errands, see my kids games and just enjoy life!
Tell us a little about the newly released product for 2014. What products have you the most excited? I love our new Mini Brag Books! Our Brag Book program has been such a success since it’s release over 3 years ago, but I’ve wanted something even smaller to work with and I LOVE these… plus, our Brag Cards make it so easy to work with---and the size can be carried right in your purse so you literally can journal your memories as you go! I am also just loving all of our chalk products. The chalk tapes and labels have been so fun to work with---especially for home decor items, so being able to add to the line with our die cut edge chalk tapes was so fun--took some time make them work, but they turned out so perfect.
What’s next for Fancy Pants? We are really trying to branch out our ideas and concepts, just like most crafters are doing. We love the DIY trend and are really trying to develop products that inspire designers as they create! Be watching for some great new products that meet the needs of all kinds of crafters! We will also be releasing videos, tutorials and fun ideas on our social media outlets so I hope you’ll join us.

this is what fun looks like Kim Jeffress - The Jot Team I used the cover of a Heidi Swapp wood veneer album as an embellishment on my page. I added some stamping with a large stamp then stencilled using mint ColorShine and white paint to add the dots. To attach the album I punched holes at the top of my layout and tied it on with thin ribbon.

One of the main things I like about blogging is that its about sharing an insight or a moment that you may not ordinarily get an opportunity to reveal. This has really become more apparent to me since I launched my freelance design business as now I have fewer opportunities to get out and about to mingle with people. Given my penchant for a chinwag (and hey I can talk under wet cement), I’d say typing a blog post satiates that in a strange sort of way. That aside, blogging is also a great platform to share and be inspired and that is ultimately the big motivator for me. I can honestly say that outside of my boys, the online community is my muse and I love that its only a click away.

I started off as a traditional scrapbooker but over time discovered digital scrapbooking and absolutely loved the immediacy of it. We are all so time poor these days and I realised that I could create a page in half the time it took me to create a traditional page.

Over the next 6 months I am booked out with blog re-designs so once those are all signed off on I aim to launch my own Digital Scrapbook store. Jot Girl, Sharmaine shares her creative process. Creating layouts for me is all about layers. Sometimes I create from the bottom up while other times I start at the top and work down. This layout, “Together & Friends�, was created somewhere in the middle.

First thing I did to create my layout was pull out some of the die cuts and transparencies that I had been hoarding. Layering these to create a space for my photo, I simply stapled them together before adding in more layers of die-cuts.
very much in keeping with the visual triangle principal. I knew where I wanted my photo to sit and used each of the ink stages in a place that would allow the eye to be drawn to the photo.
Taking a piece of white cardstock, I added some splats of black ink. And using water colour paint, I added in some larger splodges.
The last step was putting it all together, typing up my journaling strips and inking them before placing them on my page.
My next layer consisted of stamping.
I’ve added some thread and embellishments to complete the page (again keeping to the visual triangle principal) and my layout is now finished.
While it might seem like each of these steps is very random, the placement of each of my elements was

People often think that using big bows on your layouts can over take the layout taking your focus away from your photo. I believe with the careful use of colour, size and placement you can still achieve a balanced layout where the photo is still the main feature. In my layout I’ve chosen a very soft pink ribbon to help blend into the layout. This achieves an elegant and super girly effect without taking away from my photo.

I went to collect a prescription the other day; and, as I came out of the Health Centre, a double decker tourist bus drove right past. Maybe you’ve seen them? You sit on that top deck and admire the landmarks and listen to what the guide has to say; but you also get to look at the locals going about their everyday business. So I couldn’t help wondering what those tourists on that top deck were looking at as they passed me. Maybe they were looking at the Victorian red brick terrace, and the old school, or maybe they simply saw a small redhead wearing a green parka and carrying a pharmacy bag. It’s a different way to look at what we see every day, isn’t it?
A different way to record it. Not what we see, but what we think others might see.
Dig deeper, and you’ll find lots of new scrapbooking angles – if you become a tourist in your own town.

what can you see? TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED ON YOUR TOWN TOUR. • Tiny, tiny - the little details: Get up close to record the everyday colours and textures of your town. Which building materials are most obvious? Wood? Local sandstone? Do you see a lot of street art? What do the street signs look like? Are the roads wide? Narrow? Concrete? Green? • Time travel – ever wonder what your neighbourhood looked like the day you were born? The next generation will, so let’s record it for them. Search out old photos from an online newspaper archive or old postcard collection and take photos of the same viewpoint today. • Take my tour – choose any regular journey– trip to work, or the supermarket, or the school run - and make photo stops along the way. What you see will have been changing subtly since the first time you did it: what will it be like two, or ten, years from now? • Through their eyes – anyone ever visit you and take pictures? I was lucky enough to receive a gift of a CD of photos of my hometown taken by a great photographing friend. She had chosen angles and viewpoints I would never have thought of myself. These are my everyday landmarks seen in a new light. • Tell a tale – local landmarks, but with a story that’s personal to you. What did it mean to you when you were little? Any family lore behind it? What about anything connected to someone famous from the area? • Finally, take time to picture yourself in your own landscape. It’s easy to take pictures of ourselves when we travel, but what about you in your natural surroundings? Do you have a picture of you – outside your own house? Or a picture of you – taking pictures? Think about it.

Our Easter tradition consists of hunting for eggs. My children love it and it’s even better when it’s a beautiful Spring day. For this layout, I wanted to highlight the photo of my daughter’s Easter basket, as well as her sweet dress and shoes. I kept the overall focus on the photo by adding layers, tags, flair and wood veneer around the photo. To finish the page, I added a top and bottom border, a tag and jeweled clip. , I journaled directly onto the photo using a white gel pen.

I’ll begin by saying this. I love chocolate. LOVE it. When I was little, Easter was my most favourite time of the year...simply for the chocolate. Meagan, Ryan and myself would build fancy nests out of cardboard boxes, fill them with soft, fresh hay and carefully place them in special spots. I would lie in bed wondering what the Easter Bunny would bring and hope it included a Smartie Humpty Dumpty egg or a snappy mouthed crocodile with eggs inside the carton. The problem in our family was that my mum also loved chocolate. LOVED it. As in no self control type of love. Every year after we had a nibble on Easter morning, the ritual would be to hide the eggs in a place where mum couldn’t find them. We always forgave her if she did find the hidden stash and couldn’t resist. We understood her craving. After all, we were all the same - chocolate lovers!

Your kids grow up so fast! After I took his photo of my son I remember thinking how big he is getting and how he’s just not that little kid anymore! I still make him pose for a photo every now and then even though I might get a “look” when I do! For this page I used a thick mixed media cardstock and created a little texture using a polka dot stencil. I added a little acrylic paint and gold spray paint splatters to create a fun effect.

i like you. a lot. This sweet little gift card is simple to make by layering a few elements together. Here’s how I made this one// • Fold 4x6” card in half. The flower pattern and yellow ink spots are part of the card design and made a great base for my card. • Use ColorShine in rose from Heidi Swapp to mist an arrow and a dotty heart shape + a mini heart shape and set aside to dry. • Adhere the vellum Heidi Swapp heart shape to the card front. • Layer the arrow as shown and staple to keep it secure and in place. • Use your finger nail to rough up the edges of the heart shape. • Use foam mounting tape to layer in the heart shape over your arrow and vellum heart to give dimension. • Add in the teeny heart shape to the card front as shown and finish by adding a strip of computer journaling for your sentiment.

• Fold your 3x4” card in half to form your card base. • Add a layering of elements - I have used a label sticker, punched circle (offcut from the “love” card), a scrap of fabric, APOCD flair badge and a Heidi Swapp vellum speech bubble. A flair badge peeping through a punched circle makes a cute little gift card for someone special. • Fold a 3x4” journaling card in half to form your base. • Add two strips of patterned paper to the front of your card, machine stitching in place and leaving the thread ends dangling. • Punch a large circle from dark cardstock and staple to the front of your card on the right hand side. • Using a smaller circle, punch through the card front and the dark punched circle. • Use foam dots to add a flair badge inside your card so that it peeps through the punched hole. jotmagazine.com 121

dear diary. Why hello there Dear Diary
Surely you remember me? I know it’s been quite a while, hasn’t it? Decades even since I last put pen to paper, telling you my deepest thoughts and sharing the highs, lows and funnies of my days. Honestly, you don’t look like you’ve aged a bit ... but trust me ... plenty of water has flowed under my bridge since we last communicated when I was 16!
Can you believe that’s almost 30 years ago now?? Crazy, isn’t it! Do you recall those scented pink, purple and orange gel pens I used to write in and decorate you with? Yes, you do? Well you can forget them. I’m a grown up now, jotmagazine.com 136
and there’s no time for fancy pens around here. Actually, I count my blessings if I can find a working pen anywhere in this chaotic household. Maybe you remember Andrew too? The lad who plucked my heartstrings and was my first unrequited love? Well, best you forget him too. What a jerk he turned out to be! So long ago though. As I’ve already mentioned, there’s been more than enough water beneath this bridge of mine. But I think we’ll save some specific stories for another time, okay? Or maybe, on reflection, it’s even best you don’t know. Of course I’m sure you think it’s strange me resurrecting you after all this time has passed. And you’re possibly right.
But seriously my life’s become so hectic and crazy if I don’t offload some of the day-to-day madness to you my old friend, I’m positive they’ll come and lock me up! You were my sanity saver all those years ago ... and now I think I need you more than ever. Just for starters you probably should know I’m now mum to three kids. Madness isn’t it? You would never have guessed would you? I think at aged 16 I was determined to lead a life of travel with no children. Ever.
But boy, plans do change!
What I’m sure you’ll snigger at is the fact I’ll be doing the hard parenting-yards until I’m wheeled into a nursing home! You see although the eldest of my darlings, Liam, starts university next year and turns 18 ... the youngest, Gina, will be just 5 years old and starting school. So Diary, am I clever ... or insane? You tell me.... because some days I don’t know what on earth I was thinking. I guess it surely could be hilarious if it wasn’t my reality... teaching Liam to drive without reversing my car into another street sign.... and coaxing Gina to try new foods because beans truly won’t kill her! Let’s not even talk about Scott, my teenager in the middle. Sigh. The three kids are just part of my daily chaos however – because yesiree there’s more ... I’ve Mike my farmer, Fanta the cat, a part time teaching job, parent committees, after school activities, study – mine and theirs, two small businesses, an iPad addiction, messy house, aging parents, meal planning and over flowing laundry to deal with on a day-to-day basis. No wonder, I’m back here venting to you – you’ve just the broad shoulders I can lean upon! Bless you! You know, I really wish I hadn’t abandoned you all those years ago, there’s been so much happen in my life.... many ups, some downs and a good smattering of the downright hilarious. I’m thrilled to rekindle our relationship, Dear Diary, and I can’t wait to sit and write in you some more! ‘til soon
