Beshka is our featured Project Lifer this issue and it was a delight to see her work space and chat with her about her pocket scrapbooking journey. You can check it out on page 130. It’s birthdays all round here at Jot with regular feature writer Shari Brewer celebrating her eldest son’s 18th birthday recently. Shari joins us again with another instalment of Dear Diary. Read more here on page 164.

quick

layout

Mardi Winen

I love that these days when a paper collection is released there is often a pack of coordinating ephemera available. I also love that as I’m pulling together my layout I can dig through my bits and pieces and find the perfect tag, embellishment or sentiment all matching and theme appropriate. Just lately I have noticed I have a growing stockpile of leftovers from various collections and with each shopping trip that pile grows. It would be such a shame to never use such prettiness. So my challenge is to “create a layout that uses a number of pieces from one of your ephemera packs I used seven pieces of Maggie Holmes ephemera on my layout and I probably could have used more. And it felt great to use up some of my collected pieces. Type your journaling on a glassine bag, I love that it allows the patterned paper behind to show through.

Add some splatters of paint and a scattering of enamel dots to add some interest to your background. Jot Magazine 6

Use a simple layout sketch, I kept the majority of my elements confined to an imaginary square in the centre of my layout.

SUPPLIES | Patterned papers: Crate paper, MME, Jillibean Soup. Embellishments: Heidi Swapp wood veneer, Crate paper ephemera. Studio Calico vellum frame, Kaszzaz pearls, gossamer blue dots. Other: Machine stitching, Mister Huey’s white mist, Zing embossing powder, Hero Arts stamps.

Create a frame for your title using a piece of ephemera

YOUR CHALLENGE: Your challenge this issue is to create a layout using up all those lovely bits and pieces from your ephemera packs. Share your work on our facebook page here.

Lauren Hender - The Jot Team My gifted little boy now travels regularly to compete for basketball. I love our weekends away. Scrapbooking your holidays doesn’t have to be just about recording a family holiday. It can be a moment, an afternoon road trip or just a night away. Anything that breaks the routine of a busy life and lets you take a deep breath is a holiday in my books. When is your next holiday?

wonderful san antonio Meghann Andrew - The Jot Team

This layout documents our first family road trip, which was so special to me because we were just trying to figure out how to do things as a family of three! I wanted the layout to match the bright reds, yellows and blues from the photos of the city. To fit several photos on the page, I sized them to 3”x 4” and kept them in a tight grid, so that I still had plenty of white space along with my embellishments.

SUPPLIES | Cardstock: Bazzill. Patterned Papers: Studio Calico, American Crafts, Elle’s Studio. Embellishments: October Afternoon, Crate Paper, American Crafts, Gossamer Blue, Pinkfresh Studio, Studio Calico, Simple Stories, Recollections, Scraptastic Club. Stamps: Scraptastic Club. Mardi Winen - The Jot Team As soon as I decided to document my daughter’s wonderful trip to Bali earlier this year I knew I wanted to create a gelato washed background to remind me of the water and beach. Thankfully she had this fantastic Instagram photo I could use as well. The plane cut from a sheet of American crafts patterned paper worked with my theme perfectly.

Raquel Bowman - The Jot Team This theme was the perfect opportunity to go back and catch up on documenting our honeymoon to the USA. The Pink Paislee Atlas range was perfect for this. I decided to work my main elements within a circle which I created easily by lightly drawing a circle with a protractor to help guide my stitching.

SUPPLIES | Patterned papers: Pink Paislee ‘Atlas’ Collection. Cardstock: American Crafts, plain vellum. Alphabets: Pink Paislee. Embellishments: Pink Paislee ‘atlas’ ephemera, chipboard pieces, enamel shapes & puffy stickers Other: sewing machine, white thread, typewriter, triangle punch, 2” circle punch.

adventure

Petra Corcoran - The Jot Team This was our favourite day on our most recent Fraser Island holidays. In this instance I thought I’d let the pictures do all the talking and used Becky Higgins Design F pockets and mostly cards from her “Golden Edition” themed cards. These pages are just a part of my normal Project Life Album.

Jot Magazine 26

This is also from our Fraser Island holiday. The left side is the back of the Design F page and the right is the normal design A that I use throughout the year. This is how I transition back to the page design I use 90% of the time in my Project Life albums. In this layout I used the Becky Higgins Mini Kit by Amy Tangerine called Plus One. I love the bright colours and really simple natural design.

holidays

Beata Valint - Hungary Last summer we spend a great time at the sea with my whole big family. We have four children, my sister has two, my husband’s brother has two more, so we were in a big company! I made a lot of pictures about the family. It was the best summer ever! I wanted to make a page which contains all of us with happy smiles, so I decided to make a round shape with faces, and in the middle I placed some pictures about the beautiful environment!

If you’re always on the look out for different ways to add in a title then our Jot Girls are here to help. They’re mixing up different chipboard fonts, adding fabric letters and reaching for the sewing needle and thread.

Let’s take a look.

Raquel Bowman - The Jot Team

I love using cut files for titles. This particular example from my digital store at A Piece of Cake Designs is a little bit of a play on words with the heart representing the word ‘love’ and the ‘you’ within it. The Heidi Swapp papers were the perfect accompaniment for documenting this photo.

these are the moments Sheree Forcier - The Jot Team

Chipboard and sticker alphabets have always been an essential part of my scrapping stash and I use them on most of my layouts. I love that they come in so many different fonts, textures and colours which makes them perfect to mix and match for long titles! I’ve used both chipboard and stickers for the title on this page about Paul and Riley sharing a special father/son moment.

Each year I write a letter to my daughter on her birthday. I’ve just recorded last year’s letter in her scrapbook in time for this year’s birthday :)

For the title I placed die cut numbers on the cardstock, sprayed aqua mist, then removed the numbers. When the mist dried I stitched around the outline of the numbers, first punching holes with an awl to make stitching easier.

silly side

4

Meghann Andrew - The Jot Team

To create my title, I cut the word ‘silly’ out of a 12”x 12” piece of cardstock, exactly where I knew I would want it to go on my finished layout. I then covered the background star patterned paper piece with the die-cut cardstock and sprayed two different colors of ink.

After the ink had dried on both the background paper and the die-cut cardstock, I placed it back on the background paper and used it to keep my stamped words inside the misted letters. After all of that was dry, I poked holes around the outside of my title and did a basic back stitch to highlight my word.

Using fabric on your layout gives your project texture and a unique look. With so many beautiful fabrics in the world why should we not incorporate them into our scrapbooking.

special moments

Raquel Bowman - The Jot Team I love this new table that my hubby made for our entrance way. It was something that he came up with by recycling some timber and pieces from railway sleepers. Mardi Winen - The Jot Team

Yes it’s true... I’ve just painted every wall in our home white again. My hubby just shakes his head wondering why I insisted on painting them such bright colours in the first place. Heidi’s MEMORYDEX

What’s it all about? I first discovered the Memorydex in store and looked at it bewildered as to what it was all about. Then, when Heidi Swapp visited Australia earlier this year, I went to one of her store visits. Other than hanging onto her every word about memory keeping I had a light bulb moment when she demonstrated the Memorydex system. Unable to resist buying some bits on the same day, I came home and immediately punched out about four little cards. It was so quick and easy and I felt really accomplished and happy with the result. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Here’s why I love the Memorydex!

Jot Magazine 101

Jot Magazine 102

why?

For me the Memorydex solves a number of problems.

1. I am not a traditional 12x12 scrapbooker. The scale is just too overwhelming for me but these little cards -- I can do that! 2. It is a perfect solution for my Instax photos. I find them tricky to incorporate into my Project Life spreads but this seems like the perfect home for them. I have an INSTAX Share printer and print direct from my iPhone. Super quick and easy. 3. There are so many gorgeous things in this product range which makes it really easy to put things together. 90% of what I have used so far is all from the Memorydex range or the Heidi Swapp planner range. Yes the planner products are a perfect size and match for this. 4. Last but not least the journaling is quick and easy. The back of each of my cards has a story about the front. It is all handwritten and although I am usually not a fan of my own handwriting, because the journaling is on the back of the card it doesn’t bother me one bit. I have 26 cards in my Memorydex so far and it is only about 1/4 full.

Jot Magazine 103

how?

The Memorydex has been designed by Heidi Swapp as a system to help you categorise and document your memories and life. It’s based on the old Roladex system. Starting with the Memorydex tray, there’s all sorts of embellishments and accessories to help you make heaps of cute cards that can be filed straight into the tray.

And due to the unique rods in the tray base, your pile of cute cards stay put and don’t fall out!

Jot Magazine 104

what?

What do I make for my Memorydex? I use the Memorydex for little memories and stories and it’s perfect for my Instax photos. I clipped in this little booklet with “Love Right now” and the date. Inside are little pages on which I have written what I love about us right now. The stage our family is at as a unit and a little about what I love about each individual family member.

Jot Magazine 105

Heidi has thought of everything - including the Memorydex dies to create your own cards from patterned paper, cardstock or even make an entire card from a photo like this card I have made. Read more about Heidi’s Memorydex system here on her blog.

Meghann Andrew - The Jot Team

At two, my daughter is saying and doing the funniest things! Her current obsession is playing ball, and to ask us to sit down with her and play, she shouts, “leg!” No matter what we’re doing, she expects us to sit down on the floor and roll the ball back and forth with her. To get this photo, I set my camera on the floor and used a remote control during one of our ball-playing sessions.

outta the mouths of babes

Anna Allan - The Jot Team

I have been wanting to document this story for quite some time yep for the last 2.5 years actually! You know those conversations with your little one about quite a BIG subject that kinda comes outta the blue and goes straight for the heart! I can’t say I was entirely prepared for this conversation and it left me feeling, well, the natural Mummy feelings that come about when you think of your little girl growing up and finding the right person to share her life with protective, emotional, worried, hopeful and all that. But I was also quite astounded at how much they take in, how much they perceive and how they put it all together in their little minds. What she said was so beautiful and quite ‘royally’ profound, it brought me to tears and made me laugh all at the same time. Love how these little people can do that!

BESHKA KUESER

Profile of a Project Lifer Beshka Kueser is from Wiesbaden, Hesse in Germany and lives with her husband Chad and teens Riley and Logan. Discovering Project Life in 2012, Beshka has been hooked ever since and is constantly working on her pages. “I keep my album out and open so I can work on it anytime, there is always a page in progress. What size Project Life are you doing? I have always done the traditional 12x12 pages but decided it was time for a change. Starting with my 2015 pages I made the switch to 9x12 and I love it! Not too big. Not too small. I am really enjoying working with a new size and changing things up a bit.

Jot Magazine 130

“I am mostly a Project Life gal but I do the occasional traditional scrapbook page when inspiration strikes.

Jot Magazine 131

Jot Magazine 132

Do you have a dedicated Project Life space? I do. I have a pair of Alex drawers from Ikea that I have pushed together and I keep my current album out and open on top of them. I also have little dishes full of supplies nearby and I keep a lot of my Project Life supplies in the drawers.

Jot Magazine 133

Beshka’s creative space is a light filled area with splashes of colour, crisp white furniture and a bold black and white spotted rug. It’s an inviting space with a huge work table and plenty of storage for lots of supplies and albums.

Jot Magazine 134

“I love flair (badges)! They are a bit bulky in Project Life pockets but I just love them – can’t live without them. I also love chipboard pieces, labels, washi, wood veneers, stamps, and digital elements.”

Jot Magazine 135

“The best thing about Project Life is that it captures our daily life, not just the big events, but the little stuff too. I love the little stuff, the details, the things I am likely to forget twenty years from now if they weren’t documented.”

Jot Magazine 136

How long does it take to make a spread? It really just depends and I am not sure there is one true answer. I will say, the weeks where I neglect to take many photos takes me much longer to document because I have to come up with more worthwhile filler cards for my pockets. The weeks where I am good and take lots of photos...those pages seem to come together without as much effort. I keep my albums out so really a page happens over the course of a few days with me working on it here and there. I rarely create an entire spread in one sitting, but it has happened (deadlines + procrastination).

Do you print your photos at home? I print all my photos at home. I have an Epson Artisan that I use for the bulk of my printing and a Canon Selphy for printing my 4x4 photos. Love them both.

What camera do you tend to use the most? I am a Canon girl. I have always used a Canon Rebel but the hubs surprised me this past Christmas with a Canon 70D, so I use that now. I also use the Canon M, I tend to use this one for all my project photography and photos I take at home. The bigger camera I use when we are out travelling, exploring, and at special events. I use my phone a lot too.

Do you jot things down through the week or do you have any tips for keeping track of what you have done? You bet I do. I have a calendar on my desk and I try to jot down things daily. I do miss days sometimes but usually I stay on top of recording our daily events. Getting this info into pockets is another story though.

How do you organise your supplies? I don’t really organise my supplies but I look organized. There are drawers, labelled boxes and bins, but if you were to peek inside...total chaos! That being said, I do know where everything is so maybe I am more organized than I think. Maybe.

What’s the most challenging thing about Project Life? Doing chores when I could be crafting.

Jot Magazine 137

Jot Magazine 138

What are your tips for staying organised and up to date? 1. Jot down notes throughout the week. 2. Keep your photos organized so they are easy to find when it is time to print + work on a page. 3. Make the time for it all.

IT’S PARTY TIME

journaling cards Jot Girl Pocket page

team

Beshka and Leanne share some fun, fresh and inspiring ways to create your own journaling filler cards for your parties and celebration pocket pages. PROJECTS & PHOTOGRAPHY | Beshka Kueser + Leanne Allinson Jot Magazine 141

Beshka Kueser To create this set of birthday themed cards, I used my cutting machine, a few sheets of patterned paper, sequins, a chipboard heart, a transparency sheet and a bit of flair.

To create my trio I started by using the software for my cutting machine to create three 3x4” rectangles. I then selected a cake design and a balloon design. I sized these cut files to fit in my rectangles.

For the ‘14’ confetti card I used a font and created it myself. I then found a ‘birthday’ banner and added that to my work space to be cut along with my filler card designs. Once I had everything I set my die cutting machine to cut and ta-da...three cut cards + elements all ready to go.

Jot Magazine 142

For the confetti pockets I stitched together a transparency that I had cut to size, leaving one side open so I could add my confetti. Once the confetti was in I stitched the rest of the confetti pocket closed. I attached these pockets to the back of the cake and 14 cards using washi (nothing fancy here!). I added a bit of flair to my confetti cake card to finish it off. To create the balloon card I added a pop dot to the back of the balloon and attached it to the card. I then added a strip of patterned paper to the back of the birthday banner and attached the piece to the balloon. I finished it off with a little chipboard heart.

Jot Magazine 143

Leanne Allinson This trio of filler cards come from my Project Life spread this week.

butterfly “15” card With this filler card, I broke out my Silhouette cutting machine and designed a pocket to create a window effect from a negative cut out. A 2.75”x 3.75” card with the number 15 in the centre was cut from patterned paper and then backed onto a second piece of patterned paper to allow the window effect to work. I then hand stitched around the outside edge of the number/birthday age for more dimension. To finish this card, I’ve repeated the butterfly image on the patterned paper with a 3D butterfly embellishment. SUPPLIES | Patterned paper – Jillibean Soup; embellishments – Jillibean Soup label stickers, Jillibean Soup die cuts, MME Enamel dots, embroidery thread, Maggie Holmes butterfly.

Jot Magazine 144

string art card I’ve trimmed my patterned paper to 2.75”x 3.75”, which allows a small cardstock border to show beneath my 3”x 4” filler card. Once the patterned paper was cut to size I drew a 2.5” circle onto the paper lightly with a pencil. I then added the number/birthday age to the centre of the circle and paper pierced holes along the pencil lines. Using embroidery thread I hand stitched the pencil lines. I then wanted

to take the hand stitching step a little further. I filled in the space between the inner circle line and the outer number line with long stitches to resemble string art. To finish this card, I’ve added a Jillibean Soup Wise Word sticker, enamel dots and two die cut stars. SUPPLIES | Cardstock – American Crafts; patterned paper – Jillibean Soup; embellishments – Jillibean Soup Wise Words, Jillibean Soup die cut stars, MME enamel dots, embroidery thread.

pinwheel card Similar to the String Art pocket card, I’ve trimmed my patterned paper to leave a cardstock border around the outside edge. The vellum was also trimmed to match the width of the patterned paper but only two thirds of the length. At the top centre of the vellum, I’ve added a 1” circle notch. The vellum and patterned paper were then machine stitched together to create a memorabilia holder. SUPPLIES | Cardstock – Kaisercraft; patterned paper – Bella! Embellishments - vellum, Jillibean Soup pinwheel, Jillibean Soup label sticker, Jillibean Soup chipboard numbers (Beanboards), Studio Calico wood veneer heart; machine stitching.

This Project Life page goes way back to the beginning of the year. It simply highlights what everyday/every week life is for us. The simplicity of hanging out together. Playing with neighbour friends. Being our goofy selves. As well as the occasional health issue that is sure to happen now and again. I love the process of Project Life just for the very reasons showcased here.

There were so many photos and stories to be shared for this week’s spread that I’ve had to create several photo collages to help me keep them contained to a double page spread!

Leanne Allinson Queensland

My Project Life spread focuses on a retreat I attended earlier in March this year. I had such a wonderful time meeting and creating with so many talented people, including many of the current JOT Girls! Leanne’s blog

TOP PHOTO | Jot Girl Leanne was lucky enough to meet several of her fellow Jot Girls at the recent Escape2Create retreat in South Australia.

BOTTOM PHOTO | Leanne has been able to include six photos in this photo collage and kept her embellishing to a minimum with just a single glitter word to complete the card for her pocket.

Still playing catch up with my 2014 album! This week I am documenting my “Birthday Week”, which is a real thing in my house and I am the only one who gets a week. It started off as a bit of a joke but has really caught on in recent years...even the kids call the week of my birthday my Birthday Week. When everyone acknowledges it that makes it a real thing right?!

Since I document monthly spreads, the bigger stories don’t get a lot of space in my albums. When I want to document a bit more, I create separate spreads to add more photos and go into more detail about the event. This spread features my daughter’s first birthday, and I kept the color scheme simple with pinks and neutrals and a pop of gold thrown in, just like her party decor. Jot Magazine 156

BY SHARI BREWER

dear diary. It’s official. I am old. How can I possibly be the parent of an adult when I still feel like a kid myself? You’re pinching yourself too, right? How is it Liam has turned 18 when he started kindy yesterday and was born just the day before that?

Jot Magazine 164

It’s birthday time in Shari’s house with oldest son Liam turning the big 18 years old! And it’s party time.

Of course I remember my own 18th, well much of it, and I must say a traditional 18th shindig is much the same now as it was way back then and I’ll now be forever apologetic to my own parents for what I must have put them through.

The birthday boy lasted the night despite being very wobbly for a while. I was surprised and a little proud. A couple of lads did not fare so well and truly over-indulged.

Those three lads were sent home to their mothers with ice cream containers, the music was kept at a tolerable level and Gina happily served her big brother’s guests jelly shots with zero understanding of what their secret ingredient was. Thank goodness. Luckily, she’s not a jelly fan and had no interest in asking about them so I count that as a lucky escape!

The timing was ironic too! Liam’s party was held the weekend before Gina returned to school after a holiday.. ..and I’ll admit to holding my breath for the day, hoping not to get a phone call from her teacher….”Miss. Miss. My brother is 18 now and on the holiday I learnt how to play beer pong”.

Thankfully, my worst fear wasn’t realized, she didn’t spill any party secrets and I’m hoping beer pong rules and strategy are quickly forgotten.

Hand illustrated invitations… check. Tuckshop brown paper sacks transformed into party favour bags… check. Games planned and practiced…. check. And, yes the menu has been finalized.

Which is all well and good I suppose, considering her birthday is in January. Next year! Before then, Scott will be celebrating his big day, turning 16 and making me feel decidedly older by the nanosecond. This means learner’s permit, driving hours and nervously bitten fingernails. Again. While I’m still the driver, he has plenty of time to look around admiring vehicles and dreaming of the wheels he thinks his $3000 part-time job savings will afford. Shall I tell him, he’s dreaming? Meanwhile, wheels keep spinning, clocks continue ticking and my hair just gets greyer while we zoom through the years.

Anyone else in the family having a birthday celebration though immediately draws Gina’s attention back to herself and her own love of all things birthday.

I think I’ll go sit back with a cuppa and turn back time with some baby photos of my darlings.

So, since the day Liam launched into adulthood, inspired by the fuss which marked the occasion, Gina has been busily preparing for her 6th birthday party.

Till next time
