Video art is a form of art that usesmoving image, it can also include audio of some sought. Video art has different conventions then the cinema as video art may or may not use any actors or dialogue. Video art may also not have a clear narrative or plot. Video art also may not be for entertainment unlike the cinema. Video art was first invented in 1958 by a guy called Wolf Vostell whos video art was called ‘Black Room Cycle’. A guy called Nam Jim Paik had his first exhibition with manipulated tv’s in 1963. But apparently video art properly began when Nam Jim Paik went around new York city in 1965 with his sony portapak to film pope paul vi processing. Film did not provide the instant play back technology that video had so before then video art could of never worked also video is very easy to edit and modify. Video was very accessible and affordable unlike film. So it help video art to develop as more and people were testing out new ideas. Multi channel video art is just like video art however multiple screens are used in the process. The first multi channel video art was called wipe cycle by Ira Schneider and Frank Gillett. The video installation combined live images of gallery visitors, found footage from commercial television, and shots from pre-recorded tapes. The material was alternated from one monitor to the next. Video art is presented in two ways today single channel and installation. Single-channel works are similair to the conventional idea of television. In single channel video art a video is screened, projected or shown as a single image. But Installation works involve either an environment, several distinct pieces of video presented separately, or any combination of video with traditional media such as sculpture. Installation video is the most common form of video art used today. Advancement in digital technology has helped advance video art by giving greater control over editing which allows for more sophisticated edits.
