As someone who has dedicated almost fifteen years to journalism in the early childhood and education sector, I am constantly amazed by the progress made in this often-overlooked area. Despite being perceived as traditional, formal, and bureaucratic, the education field is actually a hub of innovation. While parents may not always realise it, those who design classrooms and teaching methods are at the forefront of societal change, understanding the crucial role of education in shaping the next generation. And, with the future changing faster than my child’s favourite Fortnite skin, the pace at which many schools are adapting is remarkable.

So, welcome to our much-anticipated Education Special!

In this issue, we embark on a journey across the beautiful river city to discover the schools that are redefining education and childhood development.

We visit Marist College, which recently introduced a collaborative learning program. I’m hopeful the shift to a vertical learning structure will trickle down to the mainstream in the coming years.

We also visit Sanctuary Learning Adventure to learn more about its successful award of ‘Exceeding’ at its Maudsland centre. Congratulations to the team there!

Are you curious about the unique benefits of a small school? Join us on a tour of Mary Immaculate, a small school in Annerley with a remarkably big heart.

whether your child is ready for Prep and what to expect in the lead up to starting ‘big’ school. And, if you have a reluctant reader in the house, we have expert advice on how parents can help to develop a love for books, and turn home readers into a positive experience.

Of course, we have all the usual news, events, product reviews, reader discounts and more in this huge winter edition!

Teeny Tiny Stevies release new album FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABILITY

Everyone’s favourite sister duo, Teeny Tiny Stevies, are back with a new album which tackles environmental issues in a fun and informative way for kids.

The Green Album, released on Earth Day, is not your typical children’s album. It features 11 catchy songs that explore a variety of sustainability topics, from using reusable coffee cups to composting. These songs are designed to stick in your head and get your kids singing along, all while teaching them about critical environmental issues.

The sisters, Bethany “Beth” and Sybilla “Byll” Stephen, created the album after being overwhelmed by the news about climate change. They wanted to use their platform as musicians to make a difference. The Green Album is not preachy and avoids making parents feel judged. The message is one of empowerment, encouraging kids to make small changes that can have a big impact.

In addition to the music, Teeny

Tiny Stevies partnered with the National Landcare Network to plant a tree for every pre-sale of the album. The album will also be available in a recyclable activity pack that includes invitations for families to join their local Landcare group.

The Green Album is a perfect choice for parents looking for a fun and educational way to teach their kids about sustainability. It’s also an excellent soundtrack for family road trips or a child’s first concert experience.

Teeny Tiny Stevies will be performing live in the region this winter: Saturday, 8 June, at Miami Marketta, Gold Coast (10.30 am) and Sunday, 9 June, at The Triffid, Brisbane, QLD (10.30 am). Tickets are on sale now at teenytinystevies.com

New Early Learning Centre FOR MERMAID WATERS

Early Learning operator, Sunkids, is set to open a brand-new centre in Mermaid Waters later this year.

Designed around a ‘Global Village’ theme, the 4,200sqm centre is inspired by the multiculturalism of the city, with a series of interwoven experiences tied to different parts of the world through the use of integrated landscapes and play equipment.

As families come into the centre they will enter a world where India, Istanbul, China and Egypt meet Venice and Amsterdam in the central internal play space. This flows onto the ‘Coastal Discovery’ region of the Caribbean, Australia and the Pacific Islands, which will encourage water-based play. The ‘Forest Retreat’, which features the United Kingdom and the Amazon, will provide some quiet and more explorative spaces for little adventurers.

Sunkids general manager Reyhaan Omar said the Mermaid Waters location will become the company’s flagship centre.

“This new centre will be Sunkids’ biggest yet, and we really wanted to create a point of difference with this one,” Mr Omar said.

“As the Gold Coast continues to attract new residents from around Australia and the world, which in turn is seeing the diversity of cultures grow in the city, we see the benefits of children being exposed to a more global perspective from a young age.”

“The building’s circular architecture has been designed to promote inclusive play-based learning, with all of the global regions surrounding the central ‘piazza’, which is where the children will eat,” Mr Omar said.

The new centre is part of the new Lakes precinct in Mermaid Waters and will include up to 162 places for children aged six weeks to pre-school age.

BRISBANE TEACHERS SHINE IN NATIONAL AWARDS

Two educators from The Lakes College in North Brisbane, Lauren Germanotta and Louise Parker, have been won The Educator’s prestigious 2024 ‘Rising Stars’ award.

As an impartial authority in the education sector, The Educator conducted an exhaustive fourmonth research study to identify and showcase the industry’s top performers. Winners demonstrate leadership, innovation, and achievement, making a positive impact on student learning and engagement.

Lauren Germanotta, Year 1 Teacher/Academic Care Coordinator, and Louise Parker, Secondary Teacher – Mathematics and HPE, Junior Mathematics Coordinator and Netball Coordinator from The Lakes College in North Brisbane, have carved out their own routes to the top but share many priorities as educators.

Lauren focuses on instilling positive habits and building foundational knowledge in her students. She strives to create a classroom environment that

fosters understanding and critical thinking.

Whilst Louise prioritises building relationships with her students. She utilises creative strategies to make traditionally challenging subjects like math more engaging for her students.

Both teachers share a passion for lifelong learning. Lauren holds a Master’s degree in Educational Neuroscience, which allows her to design lessons that optimise brain development. Louise, a First Nations woman from Dharug Country, incorporates indigenous culture into her teaching, fostering a more inclusive learning environment.

These Rising Stars are shaping the future of education by fostering a love of learning and cultural awareness in their students.

MARIST OPENS ITS DOORS FOR collaborative learning

Enhanced teaching practices and new classroom environments will ensure students experience the benefits of collaborative learning in the new Primary Precinct at Marist College Ashgrove.

Collaborative learning is rapidly gaining popularity as schools across the country shift to a more vertical approach to classroom structure. Students are no longer restricted by the year they were born; instead, they are grouped by level and learning style.

Marist College in Ashgrove has recently introduced this approach to learning to its own community. It believes that this educational approach will help boys strengthen their cooperation and engagement with peers while learning together. It will also assist teachers in adapting classroom activities to accommodate diverse learning styles.

A Marist education, founded in the values of simplicity, presence, love of hard work and family spirit, encourages boys to aspire to excellence and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Assistant Head of College - Primary, Michael Connolly, said collaborative learning provides wonderful opportunities to help younger students feel more supported throughout their schooling journey.

“In the past, Year 5 boys would mainly spend time with around 28 other boys in their class while having limited contact with other boys in their year levels during class time,” Mr Connolly said.

“The introduction of collaborative strategies and flexible learning spaces will enable them to broaden their social networks and friendships, as they will be able to learn alongside more boys when appropriate for the lessons of the day.

“Creating these expanded connections across their year level will help students feel more confident when they transition into middle school.”

The College provides a sanctuary for learning and uses a faith-led approach to guide boys of promise to become men of character.

A world-class, holistic education, strong pastoral care and academic program inspire students to love, learn, lead and serve. Their spiritual development is supported through a ministry program in the tradition of St Marcellin Champagnat.

The new Primary Precinct is a modern facility designed to facilitate best-practice teaching strategies. It includes flexible teaching and learning spaces and breakout rooms, which allow educators to create integrated schooling experiences and further cater to each student’s strengths and preferences for learning.

“Staff are excited to implement the new collaborative practices,” Mr Connolly said.

“More tailored approaches are available because we can adapt for small and large group learning. This benefits students who enjoy working in a large group dynamic and boys who prefer to learn independently.”

Students will have one primary teacher for most of their lessons, but collaborative learning in these flexible spaces will complement and expand their educational experiences.

with Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Maudsland THE JOURNEY TO ‘EXCEEDING’

In early childhood education and care, achieving an ‘Exceeding’ rating isn’t just a goal; it’s a testament to dedication, collaboration, and unwavering commitment. For Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure, the journey to receiving an ‘Exceeding’ rating in the Assessment and Rating (A&R) process was a combination of passion, teamwork, and a shared vision of excellence.

At the end of 2022, the collective leadership team at Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure, comprising of the approved providers, support office and centre directors from each of the five centres, decided to embed ‘Exceeding’ into their vision for 2023 and beyond. This began a year-long journey working with pedagogical leader Kelly Goodsir. It continued with the ongoing professional development of all their team

members with a strong emphasis on the educational leaders.

Through the initiative to focus more on and support the teams within the centres, the leadership team was convinced that the outcomes for the children, families and communities each centre serves would be significant.

“The whole team has been buzzing! The sense of pride has translated into ongoing positivity and unity, further fostering a culture of collaboration and celebration.”

The advantages of having a dedicated and committed workforce passionate about supporting each other and invested in achieving the best outcomes for children were becoming more evident. Thus, it is natural for the directors of Sanctuary to feel more confident in accompanying their team during an A&R.

Operations Manager Michelle Tuffley reflects on the emotions she experienced upon receiving the long-awaited news.

“I was shocked because we had waited so long for the letter, almost three and a half

years since we opened,” she says.

The culmination of years of dedication led to an excited Michelle exchanging a flurry of calls and texts into the night with Sanctuary Maudsland’s Director, Fiona Morgan, and Approved Provider, Lauren Hall.

Centre Director Fiona Morgan vividly recalls the day the announcement of the A&R visit arrived.

“When Michelle called me, she said, ‘Are you sitting down?’ and then told me that we would be having A&R the following week,” she reminisces, ”It was honestly such a great feeling as I knew we were ready.”

Fiona’s confidence in the team’s readiness was palpable, reflecting a year-long journey of professional development, growth and learning.

Fiona was responsible for sharing the exciting news with her leadership team. She was eager to find a way to convey their enthusiasm and anticipation to the broader

20 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU WINTER 2024

team. After considering different options, they created a video message instead of sending an email. Fiona explained, “We wanted to do something that would truly share our excitement with the team—an email can be read in any tone.” The video provided information about the upcoming process and showed the leadership team’s genuine excitement and confidence, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

The team’s response was overwhelmingly positive, and excitement was in the air at the centre. Fiona shared, “Our team was thrilled that the moment had finally arrived. While some of the newer team members expressed understandable nerves, the leadership team ensured each member felt supported and reassured. They emphasised the opportunity to showcase their dedication and growth.”

The involvement of lead educators and teachers further exemplified Sanctuary’s commitment to ‘Exceeding’. Lead educator

Nik expressed pride in showcasing the team’s achievements, while teacher Sara approached the process with calm confidence, reflecting the thorough preparation and support provided by the centre.

Reflecting on the A&R experience, Fiona highlights the continued momentum and camaraderie within the team. “The whole team has been buzzing since our A&R visit. The sense of pride and support exhibited during the visit has translated into ongoing positivity and unity, further fostering a culture of collaboration and celebration.”

In offering advice to fellow leadership teams embarking on their own A&R journey, Fiona emphasises the importance of authenticity and confidence. “Just do what you always do,” she advises. “Enjoy the process and know that the authorised officer wants to see all the great things you are doing, so SHOW OFF!!”

From an operational perspective, Michelle advises using this as an opportunity to showcase all the amazing things you do each and every day. “Remember that the Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) is your evidence; the visit is just an opportunity for the authorised officer to validate that what you have said in your QIP is happening in practice at the centre,” she states.

The attainment of an ‘Exceeding’ rating by Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure in Maudsland is an incredible achievement for the centre and an inspiration for the wider early childhood education community. Through its unwavering dedication, transparent communication, and innovative approaches, Sanctuary epitomises the essence of excellence in early childhood education and care, enriching the lives of all Sanctuary children and their families.

Imagine stepping off the bustling Brisbane streets into a little corner of tranquillity and learning. This is Mary Immaculate Primary, a small school in the heart of Annerley, where every child is known by name to every adult, and no child is ever overlooked.

It’s not just the lessons they teach but the nurturing environment that sets this little educational haven apart. All staff are aware of all students’ social and emotional needs, and this environment creates a place where learning is an adventure in a closeknit, supportive community.

The principal of Mary Immaculate Primary School, Mrs Sally Smith, believes that being a small school in a big city offers Brisbane kids the best of both worlds.

“Being a small school offers opportunities for our senior students to develop leadership skills and be involved in a greater range and number of leadership experiences due to the smaller number of students,” says Mrs Smith.

belonging to the school community, which research shows is a protective factor against mental health issues and bullying,” adds Mrs Smith.

The small student-to-staff ratio allows for greater curriculum differentiation and opportunities for providing challenges and support. An example is the Whole School Reading Program, where every available adult in the school, including the Principal, supports the reading program three times a week.

“The small student-to-staff ratio allows for greater curriculum differentiation.”

The children learn to relate to people of all ages and mix with children from all year groups in the classroom and the playground, allowing them to build strong connections with everyone in the school community. They are not limited to interacting only with those who are chronologically their peers.

“Our students have a strong sense of

“Every student works with an adult in a small group based on their reading age and reading goals, rather than chronological age, and staff have multiple opportunities to monitor progress,” says Mrs Smith.

Parents also enjoy the benefits of being part of a small school. There is regular contact with the class teacher, and due to small numbers, it is easy to make appointments to see the teacher or the principal for feedback and advice.

“There is a real sense of community, and parents are encouraged to engage with the

weekly school events like assemblies and “Pop Up Pages” (our reading initiative) as well as the bigger community events. Staff are familiar with all parents too, not just those from their class,” says Mrs Smith.

Being a small school doesn’t mean less innovation. In an increasingly complex and technologically advanced world, students at Mary Immaculate are nurtured to be globally literate members of society.

“In a world of social media, our students are encouraged to explore personal and communal identity through a distinctly Catholic worldview. Assuming compassion, inclusivity, courage, integrity, and generosity, Mary Immaculate learners are nourished to be people of empathy, curiosity, leadership, and creativity.”

HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS READY FOR PREP

Four years old can seem like a young age to start school, particularly if your child’s birth month makes them the youngest in the class. So, it’s common for parents to wonder if their child is ready for Prep or if they should wait a year and let the child start with greater maturity. Although this would make some children 18 months younger than others in their class, in terms of child development, this is a huge consideration for parents.

A child’s initial year of school is essential for their future academic success. It is not only about acquiring the skills to read, write, and perform basic maths sums, but also about developing independence, problemsolving abilities, and social skills. Starting school before being ready can lead to a loss of confidence, feelings of isolation, and falling behind.

WHAT WILL YOUR CHILD NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO IN PREP?

When a child starts Prep, they will be required to perform several tasks outlined on the list below, which is a good guideline in determining prep readiness.

In their Prep year, your child will need to:

• be at school five days a week for six hours a day

• have an interest in learning

• wear shoes and socks all day long

• concentrate for long periods

• be obedient, take turns, follow the rules and treat others with respect

• go to the toilet on their own

• speak clearly and make themselves understood

• run, skip, climb, throw and catch balls

• use pencils, scissors and a range of art materials

• ask if they need something or don’t understand

• change in and out of sports uniform and swimming costume

• sit quietly and listen without interrupting

• follow and remember instructions

• focus on a blackboard or electronic whiteboard

• use logic to solve problems

• work independently

• collaborate in small groups

• do regular homework and practice what they have learnt in class

Prep is very different to Kindergarten. Although a Prep class typically has one teacher and a teacher’s aide, it can create a challenging learning environment if multiple children feel homesick or distracted.

24 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU WINTER 2024

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED FOR STARTING SCHOOL?

Child development rates vary widely in the early years. There will still be six-year-olds who struggle with the demands of formal schooling and a few four-year-olds who are mature enough to thrive in their Prep year.

There are biological differences, too; girls tend to develop language skills earlier than boys. Steve Biddulph, the author of Raising Boys, claims boys are six to 12 months behind girls in fine motor skills and paying attention.

Skills required for school include:

• Academic

• Social

• Emotional

• Self-care

• Fine motor

• Gross motor

• Verbal

• Cognitive WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PREP AND KINDERGARTEN?

The difference between Prep and Kindergarten is in how those skills are

taught. Prep classes are more structured, and the whole class follows the same curriculum. Kindergarten classes are more play-based, and educators take their cues from a child’s interest to nurture their skills beyond the kindy curriculum. So, if a child shows a particular interest in letters or numbers, the teacher will encourage them to take it further … but will not push it beyond their level of interest and enjoyment.

WHO SHOULD I TURN TO FOR ADVICE?

You will know your child’s personality, temperament and habits better than anyone else. Many parents have a gut feeling when their children lack the emotional maturity to start school. However, the best authority on your child’s readiness for school will be their Kindy teachers. These qualified educators will have observed how your child behaves in class, responds to teaching and co-operates with other children. They will also be able to identify any developmental ‘red flags’, such as problems with speech development or gross motor skills, which may require intervention from a paediatrician or child therapist.

Who has the final say on whether your child is ready for Prep?

All schools have their own enrolment policies.  A few are happy to accept your child, providing they meet the standard age requirements. Most will interview the child and parents. Some will require your child to undergo a ‘school readiness assessment’—a series of exercises and observations, usually carried out away from the parents.  These will include activities such as building with blocks, identifying colours, shapes or parts of the body, using a pencil, cutting with scissors and answering some questions about themselves.

Depending on a school’s enrolment process, child interviews and assessments may occur almost 12 months before your child commences. It is important to remember that a child will make a lot of progress in a year. If a school is unsure about your child’s maturity or considers them borderline, they might ask you to re-interview in six months’ time to see how your child is advancing.

RAISING READERS BY BONDING THROUGH BOOKS

We all know the first five years of a child’s literacy journey are critical, and parents are the most influential teachers during those early years. However, that role doesn’t end when a child goes to school. Parents still play a vital part in their child’s literacy development throughout the primary years, and reading out loud to a child is a significant part of that.

PREPPIES TO YEAR 2

These littlest learners need daily support from their parents to support their early literacy.

Prep kids who can’t yet read still need picture books to be read to them, songs to be sung, and conversations about their day. As children start to bring home beginner readers, parents have a critical role in spending time with them to help them read books.

Rather than rush through each reader, stop and chat about what’s happening with the story. Ask questions and see if they understand the narrative.

If a home reader’s story is a little dull, it’s the parent’s role to keep it fun! Use funny voices, act out the story, make up alternative endings … anything to make the time spent on home readers enjoyable. It fosters a love for books.

Once children start to read picture books by themselves, it doesn’t mean Mum or Dad should stop enjoying books with their children! Sharing a book every evening is a cherished time for both parent and

child, particularly when your child might be exhausted after a long day at school. Snuggling up with your child and reading a story to them will be exactly what they need.

YEARS 3 TO 6

Though children in the mid- and seniorprimary years can read independently, parents continue to play a major role in their children’s literacy.

Older grades still need to be read to. Read books slightly above their reading level to expose them to new words and expand their vocabulary. Always stop and explain the meaning of words they might not know. Chat about the story; ask questions about what is happening.

Children in Years 3 to 6 also need lengthy conversations about their day, so always find time to ask them what they’ve been up to. The journey to and from school or activities is often the perfect time for a chat.

USE THE LIBRARY!

One of the best resources available to parents is the local library. And it’s free!

Beginner readers are invaluable to literacy development, and while each school has its own specific set, the library has a huge range to supplement. With readers on all sorts of interests and the latest popular characters— Paw Patrol, Thomas the Tank Engine, Frozen, Moana—there is a reader to spark interest in every child.

As their reading skills develop, the library is the perfect place for a child to try out different genres. Not enjoying picture books? Try a non-fiction about their favourite sport. Obsessed with unicorns? Junior Fiction is bursting with stories about unicorns, dragons, ninjas and more.

Make sure you get them their own library card so they can document and track their books. Yes, this little process helps with their early literacy, too!

OPEN DAYS

Getting the most out of OPEN DAYS

It’s school Open Day season! It’s when many schools roll out the welcome mat for prospective students and their parents. Here are some tips on cutting through each school’s highlight reel and getting a true sense of whether the school is right for your family.

As the name suggests, an Open Day is when you can meet with the school team and ask questions. It’s when teachers showcase their classrooms, and senior students act as guides. As a prospective family, you get to go ‘behind the scenes’. Open days can be incredibly valuable in that they provide you and your child with an idea of what the school looks and feels like. You can gather information on what is available to you and your child academically, athletically and more.

School Open Days can be exciting. But let’s face it, they can also be daunting for parents new to this ‘choosing a school’ thing. It’s essential to do a bit of preparation before you attend.

First, consider what’s most important to you when choosing a school for your child. Is it academic achievement, behaviour management, the overall feel of the school, the teachers, or the facilities and resources? It might be a combination of all these things.

COME ARMED WITH QUESTIONS

Write down all the things you hope your potential school can deliver. Use these things as a starting point for any essential questions you need answered.

Every school provides a handbook covering the essentials of school life. This gives you a good overview of the school and its approach. However, you may have more questions about the school’s teaching philosophy, approach to discipline and what life is like outside the classroom for its students.

LOOK AROUND YOU

Another way to gauge whether the school is right for your family is to look around. Do the students appear happy? Do the teachers seem approachable and friendly? Can you picture yourself and your family here?

Sometimes, these observations can carry the most weight, and even if your questions have been answered well, it may not be the school for you if any of these things don’t seem right.

TALK TO OTHER FAMILIES

Chat with other families and children at some of the schools you’re considering. They can give you insider knowledge and share what they like best about the school. However, always come back to your first list of what’s most important to you, as this can vary from family to family. Make sure you choose based on your own needs and values and not what is considered a ‘good school’.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT AN OPEN DAY

• What is the school’s academic philosophy and curriculum approach?

• How does the school support students with diverse learning styles or special needs?

• What are the average class sizes and teacher-to-student ratio?

• Does the school offer arts programs like music, theatre, or visual arts?

• What extracurricular activities and clubs does the school offer?

• How does the school foster a sense of community and belonging?

• Does the school offer opportunities for leadership development and student involvement?

• What is the school’s culture like?

• What is the transition process like for new students?

• How does the school handle student discipline?

• What is the level of parental involvement encouraged by the school?

• How does the school support professional development for teachers?

• What academic and social-emotional support services are available to students?

• What technology resources are available to students?

IT’S A GOAL!

Why your child needs football in their life

As parents, we all want our children to be healthy and happy and develop valuable life skills. Football (aka soccer) has held the top spot as the most popular sport for kids in Australia for many years, and its ability to tick all the boxes in childhood development is why. This fantastic sport offers a winning combination of physical activity, teamwork, and fun, making it a perfect choice for kids of all ages. And with great preschool programs available today, kids can be kicking a ball as soon as they can run.

Andy Nairn, from Little Kickers Caboolture & surrounds, explains:

“There are many reasons football is a great sport for kids. It teaches valuable lessons about teamwork, communication, and collaboration, which can be important both on and off the field.”

“Football is a wonderful tool for kids to develop crucial social skills such as making new friends, and learning to collaborate.”

Indeed, teamwork is a cornerstone of football. Kids learn to work together towards a common goal, strategise with teammates, and communicate effectively on the pitch. These collaborative skills translate beautifully into the classroom and other aspects of their lives, fostering a sense of cooperation and shared responsibility.

But football isn't just about teamwork. It's also a fantastic way to boost physical health.

“Football is a great way for kids to stay active and improve their physical health,” says Andy. “It helps with coordination, strength, and overall fitness.”

Running, jumping, and kicking the ball all contribute to a strong cardiovascular system, improved coordination, and overall physical development.

Football is not just a game, it's a platform for social development. Playing alongside peers fosters lasting friendships, teaches kids valuable social skills, and helps them learn to handle both victories and losses with grace. As Andy points out, “Football is a wonderful tool for kids to develop crucial social skills such as making new friends, learning to collaborate, and dealing with the ups and downs of life.”

Most importantly, football is simply fun! The thrill of scoring goals, the excitement of dribbling past opponents, and the joy of healthy competition all contribute to a positive experience. “Above all, football is a sport that brings immense joy and fun to many children,” says Andy. “It's a great way for them to channel their energy, feel a sense of accomplishment, and have a blast with their peers.”

But what Andy loves most is seeing the all-around growth that football can bring to the little ones.

“What truly warms my heart is witnessing children's growth in our program. It's not just about their football skills but also their blossoming

confidence. Seeing a once-shy child break out of their shell and enjoy scoring goals with their newfound friends is a sight that fills me with immense pride and joy!”

“In my opinion, there is no better feeling in the world than scoring a goal and listening to the roar of the crowd afterwards.”

Imagine the roar of your child's laughter and the pride of watching them blossom on the field!

Dingoes may look like cute domestic dogs, but they are wild animals and must be treated as such.

34 WINTER 2024

BE DINGO-SAFE ON K’GARI

BE DINGO-SAFE ON K’GARI

K’gari (Fraser Island) is an Australian gem right on our doorstep. This World Heritage island boasts stunning scenery, crystal-clear lakes, and exciting adventures. But K’gari is also home to dingoes, so it’s critical to know how to be dingo-safe before you go.

Dingoes are the apex predators in the ecosystem of K’gari. As such, these pack hunters must be treated with respect and safety in mind.

The K’gari dingo plays a vital role in the island’s ecosystem, so it’s essential for them to maintain their natural hunting skills and remain wary of people.

“K’gari is one of our most iconic and beloved tourism destinations,” said Leanne Linard, Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef and Minister for Science and Innovation. “However, the pristine natural environment that attracts so many families also presents challenges, particularly with the dingo population. Dingoes may look like cute domestic dogs, but they are wild animals and must be treated as such,” said Leanne.

“We want to ensure that visitors to K’gari can enjoy it safely while helping to keep the island’s precious dingo population wild.”

“Dingoes are wild animals, and we need everyone to be aware of the dangers of potential interactions.”

KNOW YOUR DINGO DO’S AND DON’TS BEFORE YOU VISIT K’GARI

Do keep kids within arm’s reach Dingoes may be closer than you think, and they move quickly. Children cannot be relied upon to know or remember what to do if threatened by dingoes. Stay very close—within arm’s reach—of your children and teenagers to reduce your risk of a dingo testing their dominance with your family.

Do carry a safety stick

Always carry a safety stick (such as an umbrella, hiking pole, or something similar) to deter dingoes from coming too close.

Do keep your distance from dingoes

Stay at least four car lengths (20 metres) away from dingoes.

Do camp in fenced areas

Particularly if travelling with children.

Do dispose of rubbish correctly

Keep rubbish in a locked, airtight container or in your car, and use fenced waste transfer stations to dispose of it. Alternatively, take it home when you leave. K’gari is a World Heritage Area, and taking your rubbish with you will not only keep the dingoes wild but also help to protect K’gari’s pristine wildlife.

Don’t run

Running or jogging can attract a dingo’s attention and trigger their instinct to chase. People running on K’gari have been threatened and bitten by dingoes. Always walk to reduce your risk of a negative interaction.

Don’t be alone

Dingoes are natural hunters and can stalk people. Walking or sitting alone whenever you’re outside a fenced area on K’gari increases your chance of being threatened by a dingo. Always walk in groups to reduce your risk.

Don’t feed or interact with dingoes

It’s an offence to feed or make food available to a dingo, including intentionally attracting or disturbing a dingo anywhere on K’gari. Keep food, cooking, cleaning, and fishing items locked up or in your car. Dingoes are attracted to anything with a scent. Secure your storage and iceboxes with heavy-duty straps. Never store food items in your tent.

Don’t bring food or have picnics on the lake shore or beach

This puts you at the dingo’s level and can encourage them to steal your food. Fines apply if you break the rules.

IF APPROACHED BY A DINGO:

1

BE BIG AND BRAVE

Make yourself look large and dominant. Use your safety stick to keep the distance between you and the dingo. If a dingo acts aggressively, tap the stick on the ground or flick sand at it until it leaves.

2

FACE THE DINGO—NEVER TURN YOUR BACK

Keep your arms close to your body. If you’re next to someone, stand backto-back.

3

YELL ‘HELP’ AND ‘DIN-GO AWAY!’ BE LOUD

Be confident and call for help. Yelling ‘Dingo!’ will alert others in the area so they know how to respond appropriately.

4 5

CALMLY BACK AWAY

Move to your car or a fenced area. If there is no safe space to back away to, stand your ground and continue calling for help. Dominance testing can go on for a long time.

TELL A RANGER

Report your interaction to a ranger by calling (07) 4127 9150 or email dingo.ranger@des.qld.gov.au

Transformational adventures for families FIND YOURSELF… TOGETHER

Transform your family’s holiday right here on the Sunshine Coast this September.

Transformational travel is a new tourism trend focused on personal growth, self-improvement, and wellness. According to Jake Haupert, the founder of the Global Transformational Travel Council, “Transformational travel is any travel experience that empowers people to make meaningful, lasting changes in their lives.”

Meeting this rising trend, Earth Lodge Australia has launched a transformational holiday camp for all ages in Kenilworth, Sunshine Coast. The camp offers uniquely tailored programs divided into three lodges: Kids Lodge, Teens Lodge, and Adults Lodge. Each lodge program is designed with thoughtful attention to the preferences and needs of different age groups.

Kids Lodge is a magical wonderland that sparks imagination and encourages learning through play. Teens Lodge is a dynamic haven that directs youthful exuberance into opportunities for selfdiscovery and independence.

of physical activity,” Laura-Doe from Earth Lodge Australia explains.

Designed for children aged 4 to 12, Kids Lodge offers a variety of nature-inspired activities, including treasure hunts, bush crafts, storytelling, creative games and magical journeys.

“Your child will have a fantastic time and develop a deeper appreciation for nature and its wonders.”

Adults Lodge, on the other hand, is a serene sanctuary that offers tranquillity and nurturing while providing engaging and impactful teachings from visiting educators.

“Children are natural explorers and learners. That’s why we’ve shaped Kids Lodge as an adventure playground that unleashes creativity and joy and encourages plenty

“At Kids Lodge, your children will have a fantastic time developing a deeper appreciation for themselves and their connection with nature.”

Teens lodge is designed for ages 13 to 18, offering activities that are not only thrilling but empowering. With experiences like raft-making, fire-building, mountain biking and wilderness survival skills teens can challenge themselves and venture out of their comfort zones.

“We understand that the teenage years are filled with exploration, self-discovery, and the quest for independence. That’s why we’ve dedicated Teens Lodge to fostering key life skills. Through meaningful activities, they

will develop resilience, problem-solving, and a sense of independence. In Teens Lodge, your teenagers will discover more about themselves, their capabilities, and their connection to the world around them. It’s not just about adventure—it’s about growth,” explains Laura-Doe.

Parents are catered for too, with Adults Lodge—designed to be a haven for relaxation, reflection and evolution. “As adults, we also need time to unwind, rejuvenate, and reconnect. Whether you’re a parent looking for some respite from your responsibilities or an individual seeking a place to reconnect with nature and your inner self, Adult’s Lodge is the place for you,” says Laura-Doe.

This magical family camp adventure promises to create unforgettable memories, foster stronger connections among family members, and nurture your spirit. It is not just any ordinary vacation—it is a unique opportunity to transform your lives and experience personal growth while enjoying quality time with your loved ones in the great outdoors. Are you ready for this life-changing adventure?

Empowering TEENS TO COOK

A new cookbook, The Shared Apron, created and co-tested by a local mum-son duo, is empowering teenagers to develop their cooking skills, with a focus on healthy and delicious meals using simple ingredients.

The Shared Apron – Everyday

Cooking for Teens features over 65 easy-to-follow recipes, including breakfasts, snacks, meals and sweet treats. The cookbook is packed with creative recipes for everything from one-pot butter chicken to Mexican black bean burgers, rustic apple pie, and passionfruit cheesecakes. Filled with techniques to teach the basics, with lots of tips along the way, these foolproof recipes using fresh produce and simple ingredients are ideal for teens, their families and friends.

Julie Jansen, a home economist and recipe writer, has created The Shared Apron cookbook with her son Ethan Jansen, a passionate 15-year-old cook. Ethan is now confident with a chef's knife, adept at preparing family meals, whipping up snacks for friends, and inventing innovative recipes.

"Encouraging teens to cook has many benefits. As well as promoting good nutrition to support their growing bodies, skills in the kitchen will boost confidence and help teens and their families reconnect,” says Julie.

“Time spent cooking can strengthen relationships and makes fun memories ... and who doesn’t love eating good food too?”

This book is sure to become your teens’ new kitchen go-to and is available for purchase at thesharedapron.com.au
