New Year, Renewed Opportunities for Health & Wellness

The beginning of a new year is a great time to make healthy lifestyle changes, give up bad habits, and improve your well-being. It’s no wonder that many people celebrate the New Year by resolving to get healthier. The most popular New Year’s resolutions include getting more mindfulness, exercise, losing weight, and eating a healthier diet.

Developing a realistic plan this year will enable you to strengthen your physical and mental health. Here are some steps you can take to get healthier in the year ahead and achieve your health goals:

1Lose weight and keep it off

A resolution to lose weight is one of the most important steps you can take toward better health. According to Steven Santiago, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, “Losing just five to ten percent of your body weight can help lower your risk of chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.”

If you haven’t exercised for a while, going to a gym every day may not be a realistic goal. Making a resolution to simply add more physical activity into your daily life is more attainable. Park farther away from the entrance to the grocery store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and exercise while you watch TV.

2Eat a healthy diet

Healthy eating involves both what you eat and how you eat it. Getting your recommended servings of fruits and vegetables each day is important because fruits and veggies are low in calories and fat, high in fiber, and rich sources of vitamins and minerals. Foods that contain fiber keep you feeling full, which helps you lose weight.

also adds that, “Eating too fast can cause you to overeat, so slow down and chew each bite carefully. Turn off the TV, put your phone away, and enjoy the textures and flavors of the meal. As you eat, it can take your brain up to 20 minutes to get the message from your stomach that you’re no longer hungry, so stop eating before you feel full.”

3Schedule an annual checkup

Seeing your primary care doctor each year and taking advantage of your preventive care benefits can help you stay healthy. Regular checkups and preventive screenings allow your doctor to identify minor health issues before they become bigger problems.

Let’s keep our eyes on the year ahead. Integrating exercise and nutritious food is a preventative health practice that protects our hearts and minds. With the support provided by Care Resource’s medical providers, our community can rest assured that they will attain their New Year’s resolutions.

4Take steps to reduce stress

Learning how to manage stress is an important part of taking care of yourself and maintaining good overall mental and physical health. If your stress is getting out of control, simple activities like practicing breathing exercises, going for a walk, or listening to music can help restore calm to your life.

5Get more sleep

Good quality sleep boosts your immune system and promotes emotional wellness by giving your mind time to rest and recharge. Establishing a relaxing bedtime

Don Clerveaux, a 5th-grade Science and Social Studies teacher at Phyllis Ruth Miller Elementary has been named the 2024 Francisco R. Walker Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year at a ceremony held this evening at the DoubleTree by Hilton Miami Airport & Convention Center. Clerveaux is inspired by his students, past and present. He connects with their vulnerability and concerns to conquer challenges. As a science instructor, he engages students in hands-on experiences in the Royal Palm Everglades, allowing students to see classroom assignments come to life. These visits motivated his fellow teachers to become certified to take their students to the Everglades.

Since bringing his extensive teaching experience to Miami-Dade County Public Schools nine years ago, Clerveaux has continued to task his students with being

the generation that saves our planet for future generations and is confident that his classroom lessons will encourage them to do just that.

The runner-up is Monique Bryant Clayton, COPE Center North.

The top rookie teachers were also recognized at the event. The 2023 Rookie Teacher of the Year is Franquiana Williams a second-year teacher at Frederick Douglass Elementary School. She teaches 4th- and 5th-grade Reading and Language Arts.

A proud graduate of Miami Northwestern Senior High, Williams upholds the values of citizenship and community by cultivating an environment where students can be their authentic selves and celebrate their diverse cultures.

Williams engages parents in meaningful conversations to strengthen the teacher-parent bond for the benefit of her students. She also personally ensures students receive additional support and tutoring to continuously promote their progress.

The supporting sponsor is Univision 23 and the signature sponsors include EdFed, Office Depot, United Way of Miami-Dade and Kendall Toyota, which will present the Teacher of the Year winner with the keys to a new car. The event is made possible through partnerships with the Dade Association of School Administrators, the Miami-Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs and United Teachers of Dade (UTD).

6 Ways to Protect Dinnertime as a Single Mom

Source: Family First

When I moved in with my parents after my divorce, I knew my boys were going to eat like kings. My mom has a passion for cooking, so making a healthy dinner for her grandsons was like serving love on a plate. My younger son tried salmon, quinoa, and lamb while he was still in diapers and it was all thanks to her.

When we moved into our new house, I knew the importance of family dinner, so that time was something I wanted to keep as a priority. It was hard at first because I didn’t inherit my mom’s skills in the kitchen. We definitely used the microwave more than the grill, but preserving that time around the table was one of the best decisions I made. If you think you’re too busy or pulled in too many directions to eat dinner with your kids, here are 6 ways to make it happen.

1Don’t lose sight of the big picture. When you’re in the thick of single parenthood, it might feel easier to grab food and go your separate ways. So stay focused on the importance of family

dinner and these facts: Kids who grow up having family dinners have lower rates of obesity. And regular family dinners are associated with lower rates of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders, and with higher self-esteem.

If that’s not enough, according to Anne Fishel, the executive director of the Family Dinner Project, research shows teenagers rank family dinner pretty high on a list of things they like to do, and 80% of teenagers say family dinner is the time of day they’re most likely to talk to their parents. In other words, family dinners are hard, but they’re well worth it.

2Plan your meals

Hopefully, you’re convinced, so now let’s talk practical ideas. Meal planning is more work in advance, but it’s better for your budget and your brain come 5 p.m. After a long day at work and a pile of homework and housework, you’ll be grateful you can look at your meal chart and say, “Tonight is spaghetti and meatballs with a side salad. Who wants to make the salad?”

3Use leftovers to your advantage. Leftovers don’t have to happen by accident. On Taco Tuesday, if I buy two pounds of ground beef, I know we’ll have leftovers that can become a taco salad for lunch on Wednesday. When dinner doubles as lunch prep, you’re more likely to stick to the routine. Buy thermoses for your kids and put last night’s spaghetti in them. They’ll be grateful not to eat school lunch and you’ll be glad to have lunch packing checked off your list.

4Embrace repetition.

I remember my pediatrician putting my mind at ease when I said I was concerned that my toddler didn’t have enough variety in his diet. She said, “Think about what you eat. You repeat a lot of the same meals, too.” So hear these words: You are not a bad mom because you feed your kids the same foods most nights. Repetition makes meal planning, shopping, and cooking easier. If your family has five to 10 meals everyone likes, put them on a rotation and embrace the routine.

Find the ten differences

5Use shortcuts and cook smarter, not harder.

There’s no shame in minute rice and bagged salad! Yes, those things might be more expensive than cooking from scratch, but if using shortcuts here and there makes family dinners more doable, they’re worth the cost. My other favorite shortcut is batch cooking. You start with the same basic ingredients then separate them into two pans. From there you add different flavors to create two different meals. One goes in the fridge or freezer and the other goes on the dinner table.

6Outsource!

You might be a single mom, but you don’t have to do it all on your own. If you have family in town, designate a night to eat together. Just offer to provide part of the meal or chip in on the cost. If you have a friend from church or down the block who wants family around the table, make it a standing date—every other Thursday, we go to Ms. Wilson’s house.

And don’t forget that you don’t have to prepare and clean up a meal all by yourself. Little kids can set the table. Big kids can help cook. Everybody can help clean up. You’re doing your children a favor by giving them the chance to help make dinner happen.

What else can you do to preserve family dinner? k

Get Ready to Roar in Ultimate Dinosaurs: Meet a New Breed of Beast

Dig into this special exhibition at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

Step into the shoes of a paleontologist and uncover some of the most significant dinosaur discoveries from the Southern Hemisphere over the last two decades in Ultimate Dinosaurs: Meet a New Breed of Beast, now open at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami.

This is not your ordinary dinosaur exhibition! Ultimate Dinosaurs reveals a new breed of dinosaurs that evolved in isolation in South America, Africa, and Madagascar — dinosaurs unfamiliar to popular imagination. You’ll feel the exciting and intimidating presence of these exotic creatures as you wander amongst the 13 life–size casts, in addition to authentic dinosaur fossils and touchable fossilized dinosaur specimens. Cutting-edge technology and augmented reality interactives put a new twist on bringing these prehistoric creatures to life in the 21st century. From the tiny Eoraptor to the massive Giganotosaurus (T. rex’s bigger, badder cousin), Ultimate Dinosaurs is a fascinating study of species you have not met before.

The exhibition tells the story of the break-up of the supercontinent Pangaea into the continents that we know today and the ways that continental drift affected the evolution of dinosaurs

during the Mesozoic Era, 250-65 million years ago. As Pangaea divided first into Laurasia in the north and Gondwana in the south, and later into the many continents we know today, dinosaurs were passengers on these drifting land masses. You’ll discover that an amazing diversity of species evolved because of this phenomenon. Dinosaurs imposed geographic location helped promote their evolution into an incredible array

of unusual forms that dominated wherever they lived. The exhibition seeks to answer the question: why are southern dinosaurs so unique and bizarre, and why are they so different from their North American counterparts?

Don’t miss your chance to see Ultimate Dinosaurs before it closes on Sunday, April 23, 2023. Admission is included with all museum admission tickets. k

Top 7 Reasons to Start Planning an Unforgettable Summer

Overall, summer camp can be a valuable and enjoyable experience for children. Both day and overnight camps help them to grow and develop in a fun and supportive environment.

What about the cost of camp? Camps vary in cost, and some are completely free! Look into organizations, local places of worship, or parks and recreation offices. For other camps, ask camp directors and owners about scholarship opportunities or financial aid. Around 93 percent of ACA-accredited camps offer financial assistance.

start thinking about summer camp. Why? Registration is opening at summer camps across the country right now!

Summer camps provide children and youth with a variety of benefits and opportunities for personal growth.

“The camp experience is essential to child and youth development,” said Tom Rosenberg, president/CEO of the American Camp Association (ACA). “Camp provides children with a safe environment in which they can take risks, try new things, and find community.”

Research shows that the socialemotional skills learned and practiced at camp support kids year-round. As kids build friendships and social connections, they form key skills that bolster academic performance and are at the core of college and career readiness.

The benefits of summer camp are endless, but here are seven key reasons why summer camp provides a unique and delightful experience:

2Many summer camps offer a range of outdoor activities, such as swimming, hiking, and sports, which can help kids stay active and healthy.

3Personal development and independence: Spending time away from home at summer camp can help children learn how to be more independent, resilient, and self-sufficient.

4

Education and exploration: Many summer camps offer educational programs or workshops focused on topics such as science, technology, art, or music, that support children’s overall development and broaden their interests.

When considering camps, be sure to look for ACA Accreditation. For parents and families, this means that your camp undergoes a thorough peer review of its operations — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving agencies to ensure that current practices at your child’s camp reflect the most up-todate, research-based standards in camp operation. All of this means growth and fun in an environment committed to safety.

Start your summer camp search! Find more information at www.find.ACAcamps.org today. k

5

New experiences: Summer camp can be a chance for children to try new things, build resilience, and learn skills that they might not have access to at home.

6Time away from technology: Most summer camps provide the opportunity to completely unplug and explore opportunities to be fully present.

About the American Camp Association

1

Socialization and friendship building: Summer camp is a great place for children to build new friendships and learn how to interact and communicate in a group setting.

7Healthy identity building: Summer camp uniquely provides kids with opportunities to develop social-emotional learning to support success in the classroom when kids go back to school.

The American Camp Association® (ACA) is a national organization serving the more than 15,000 year-round and summer camps in the US who annually serve 26 million campers. ACA is committed to collaborating with those who believe in quality camp and outdoor experiences for children, youth, and adults. For more information, visit www.ACAcamps.org

NDonation to Enhance Pediatric Care for Children in Florida and Beyond for Generations to Come

icklaus Children’s Hospital officials announced one of the largest single donations in the hospital’s 72-year history. The $25 million gift from Citadel founder and CEO Kenneth C. The new surgical facility, featuring robotics, virtual and augmented reality, and intraoperative monitoring, as well as expansive surgical suites and improved pre- and post-surgical care spaces, will allow the hospital to provide world-class care in a high-tech, family-friendly environment for decades to come.

“Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is a world leader in healthcare,” said Ken Griffin. “We are so blessed to have such a talented team dedicated to providing the best care to every child. I am honored to support this mission.”

“It warms our hearts when others share our passion for helping children,” said

support to provide every child with the best treatment available.

In partnership with the hospital’s foundation, Nicklaus Children’s is embarking on the next phase of its story with a campaign to support the tower and the development of its institutes.

Improving Oral Hygiene, Enhancing Smiles, and Ensuring Comfort

healthy mouth is more than just a nice smile. It helps one to eat, drink, talk and smile. Since oral health and overall health are connected, having a healthy smile can help keep the rest of one’s body healthy, too.

Dental care is integrated as part of Care Resource’s primary care program. Their team is committed to improving the overall quality of life of South Florida diverse communities in need. Care Resource’s dental services are available at their Midtown Miami, Oakland Park, and Little Havana health centers.

Services include dental exams and radiographs, preventive services (cleanings), restorative (fillings) –composite (white) and amalgam (silver), night guards and bleaching, crown and bridge, removable prosthetics (partials

and dentures), minor oral surgery, or selected root canal therapy.

Most of the dental services at their health centers are provided on a sliding-fee scale that reduces the fees for those with lower incomes, lack of dental insurance or the inability to pay.

According to Manuel Casas, DMD, Dental Clinical Director, “At Care Resource, our dental office was designed with our p atients in mind. By combining a calm atmosphere with the latest technology, we have created a place where patients receive the level of dental care they need and deserve. We understand that many people feel anxious about visiting the dentist, but you can be assured that your comfort is our top priority.”

The key to maintaining dental health is prevention. Brushing twice a day, flossing

daily, eating properly, and regular dental check-ups are essential to preventing dental problems. However, one should still schedule their dental appointments once or twice a year for a routine examination and cleanings, where dental issues can be found early and are usually simpler and more affordable to treat. In fact, more than 1 in 4 U.S. adults — 26 percent — have untreated dental cavities, according to oral health data gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For more information, please call 305.576.1234 or visit careresource.org. Existing patients are encouraged to schedule an appointment, renew medications, and more through the health center’s patient portal.
