Regardless,studentshadafuntimewithallthefestivities. RunbyEnglishandCreativeWritingteacherJohnPenola,FeedbackClubgivesstudents,rangingfromwritersandauthors tomusicians,theperfectopportunitytosharetheircreativework Thiscanbeintheformofdrawings,differenttypesof writing,orotherpiecesofartforms Uponsharingtheseworks,studentsreceivefeedbackfrompeers,hencethename The clubprovidesasafespaceforsharingcreativeideasandpiecesofworkthatstudentsarehopingtoimproveon.

Duringthecollegeadmissionsprocess,raceisever presentin themindsofbothapplicantsandadmissionsofficers.On CommonApp,CollegeBoard,andotherwebsitesutilizedfor collegeadmissions,thereisalwaysaquestionpertainingto race.Asanefforttowardamorediversestudentbody,top institutionshave,attimes,givenhistoricallydisadvantaged racesloweredstandardsforadmission.Now,withthe practicedisenfranchisingdeservingapplicantsfrom“over represented”racialbackgrounds,manyquestiontheextent towhichcollegestakeraceintoaccountwhendecidingwho toadmitandwhotodeny.
Overrecentyears,collegeadmissionshavebecomemore intenseattopschools.Despitethis,morestudentsthanever continuetoapplytotheseschools AccordingtoForbes, “highlyselective”members(admitratesbelow50%)sawa 25%increaseinapplicationssince2019 20;“moreselective” institutions(admitratesof50 74%)sawanincreaseof11%.
Itisevidentthatmoreschoolsaretryingtoincorporatea morediversecommunity Basedondifferentareasofthe application,schoolscangetagrasponhowuniquean individualis.AccordingtojournalistKirstenCourault,inthe CommonApplication,andapplicationsforseveralother colleges,somemainessaypromptsaskabouthowyour background,identity,orexperiencehasaffectedyou.
SchoolcounselorMarleneGoudreausays,“Collegesprofess tonotfactorraceorethnicityinbecausethatisillegal,butI dothinkthatcollegeswanttohavestudentsfromdifferent walksoflife.”
AttheUniversityofNorthCarolinaatChapelHill,oneoftheirshort essaysasksstudentsto“describeanaspectofyouridentity(for example,yourreligion,culture,race,sexualorgenderidentity, affinitygroup,etc.).Howhasthisaspectofyouridentityshaped yourlifeexperiencesthusfar?”Somestudentsbelievethisishelpful towardcertaingroupsofpeopleorminorities,whileothersdonot
SeniorAlannaGallaghersays,“Ithinktheyconsiderraceabig amount.IknowatDartmouth,about50%oftheirstudentsare minorities.Differentcollegesclassifyminoritiesdifferently.Iknow somecollegesconsiderAsiansasminorities,somedon't.Butyou havetoimagineabiggerpartofthatisAfricanAmericansor indigenouspeople”
First,collegeswillalwayslookatyouracademicsandthelevelof classesyouhavetaken.SeniorAndrewGarciasays,“Thefirstthing collegeslookatisdefinitelyyourGPAandtherigorofyourclasses.I wenttotheGovernor'sSchoolinthescienceslastsummer;it's prettyselective WhatInoticedwiththepeopleselected,theyhad somesortofspike.Somethingdifferentaboutthemthathelped themstandout.”
Similarly,Goudreausays,“Theylookforstudentswhoaregoingto besuccessfulontheircampusandalsostudentswhoaregoingtobe fullmembersofthecampusandbeinvolvedincampusactivities Theyarelookingforpeopletofitintoadiversecommunityof studentlife.”

Whileracemayfactorintoone’schancesofgettingintoa college,socioeconomicstatusshouldbeconsideredtoa furtherextent.Goudreausays,“Forexample,Icouldsee thatstudentswhocomefrombackgroundswherethey didn’thavethesameopportunitiesasstudentslikeinour school”
Bigginsstatesthattherearetwodifferenttypesof colleges:need blindandneed aware.
“Need blind means they assess you 100% based on your academic caliber not on the needs of the student. Then there are need aware, there are some colleges that evaluate the student based on their financial caliber and there is a lot of hesitation whether that is really fair assessing a student on if they can afford going there.”
Garciaagrees,saying,“Youcan'tchooseyourstatus,whereyou comefrom,orwhatyoulooklike.Yet,throughcolleges compensatingbyallowingastudentwhomaybehaslower numbersbutgivingthemtheopportunitiesattheirschool, thoughtheystartedofflower,theystilldeserveit.”
Historically,differentracesperformdifferentlyonstandardized tests,aswellasthoseofdifferenteconomicbackgrounds.
AccordingtoCollegeBoard,studentswhocomefromfamilies withanincomeoflessthan$20,000,haveanaverageSATscore of970.Incomparison,thosewithanincomeofover$200,000, haveanaverageSATscoreof1230.
Thatbeingsaid,incomeseemstobeabetterindicatorof academicsuccessthanminoritystatus;therefore,affirmative actionpoliciesshouldfocusonincomedisparities.Thesepolicies wouldstilllikelybenefitminoritiesbecausetheyarehistorically morepoor,butitisunfairforthosegiventhesameopportunities tobegivenalegupsimplybecauseoftheirrace.
Studentsapplyingtocollegesshouldbeawarethattheirgender, race,ethnicity,financialstatus,andacademicsarealltakeninto accountbyadmissionofficers.Thoughsomecollegesareneed blind,allaspectsofone’sapplicationcanshowcasehowunique anindividualis,regardlessoftheirraceorsocioeconomicstatus.
Thecollegeadmissionsprocessattemptstoturneverystudent intoaplethoraoffactorstobecomparedwithothersintheir graduatingclass.Thefactorsthatstudentscontrolcandominate thelivesofmanyhighschoolersattemptingtooptimizetheir applicationtogetintotheirdreamschool.Thismakesit frustratingformanystudentswheninalterablefactorsthatcut acrosseconomiclinesmayhindertheirchances,anditisonthe affectedstudentstodrivechange.IntheupcomingSupreme Courtterm,theyarehearingcasesagainsttheUniversityofNorth CarolinaatChapelHillandHarvardfordiscriminatingagainst AsianAmericanstudents.Ifthesecasesruleagainstthe establishedpolicyoffactoringinrace,thenamoremeritocratic societymaybeinsight

AccordingtohistoryteacherDanielleElia,whentheUS gainedindependencefromGreatBritain,“peoplesaw thatasachange,becauseofthedifferentrightsthatwe haveinourConstitution,andhowmorefreedomsare allowed.”Beitforemploymentopportunities,escaping fromviolentconflicts,education,orenvironmental factors,theUnitedStatesbecameabeaconforabetter futureforthoseabroad
Americancitiestodayoftenhavesectionsheavily influencedbyforeigncultures,asimmigrantsstrivedto maketheirnewhomesmorefamiliarthanthelivesthey leftbehind.“Thepointofthatisnotnecessarilytochange whattheUnitedStateswasstandingfor,butalsobring thatsenseofhomeandwhatpeopleknowwiththem,” saidElia.
Overtheyears,immigrantfamiliesstillholdontotheir culturalidentities Theirreligion,food,clothing, language,music,andtraditionalvaluesareallthingsthat getpasseddownthroughgenerations.
Livingincommunitieswithpeopleofsimilarethnic backgroundsisalsohelpfultoconnectwithyourheritage andtalkwithfamilythatmayliveinothercountries.“I grewuponlyspeakingRussian,andthenIwentto preschoolanddaycarewithallRussian speaking teachers,”saidsophomoreMarieLevi,whoisRussianand Israeli.
Thisreporteralsoexperiencesthestrugglesofafirst generationAmerican.BothofmyparentsarefromIndia, whileIwasbornandraisedintheU.S.Theytaughtme Hindi,ourculture,andsentmetoSundaySchoolsince firstgrade SinceIwasakid,I’vetraveledtoIndiaalmost everyyearandvisitedmyfamily Beforeunderstanding
Hindi,talkingtorelativeswasdifficult.Itwasdisheartening nottobepartofthefamilythesamewaymycousinswere.
ButbackintheU.S,myclassmatesandteacherstreatedme likearepresentativeofIndia.Translatingwhateverwordsthey wantmetosay,askingmewhatlifewaslikethere;itwas completelydifferentfromhowIfeltwithmyrelatives.Ina roomfullofwhitekids,Iwastheoutlier.
“I’mmostlyfromAmerica,andspeakingadifferentlanguage herecangetyouintrouble,”sayssophomoreFairoozKabir, who’sBangladeshi.Eventhoughsomenative borncitizens havelivedintheU.S.theirwholelives,xenophobia,or prejudiceagainstpeoplefromothercountries,isoften targetedatthosewithnoticeableforeignfeatures,likeskin color.
AtKHS,18.9%ofstudentsareminorities,accordingtoUS News.Duetothelargeculturaldiversityinthestate,functions, andeventscanbecelebratedwiththecommunity.
“WedocelebratesomeJewishholidays,andthenathome,we onlyspeakRussianandeatmostlyRussianfood,”saidLevi. “Andoverthesummerandduringtheyear,wegoto gatheringsorfestivals,orplaceswherealotofRussianpeople gosomyparentscankeepupwiththecultureandmusic.”
NotonlydoesKabirattendgatheringsandfunctionswithher family,butshealsopracticestraditionalartformsfromher country.“IdidculturalKathakandBharatanatyamdances[...] Iusedtodoperformancesatreallybigpartiesbecausethey usedtomakebigfestivalsandfunctions.”

THE KINNELON FOOD PANTRY PROVIDES A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF SUPPORT TO THOSE IN NEED

Hungerisanationwideepidemicthat doesnotappeartobegoingaway,no matterhowdevelopedthecountry becomes.TheUSDAestimatesthat89.5% ofU.S.householdswerefoodsecure throughout2019 that’s116.0million people.Morethan650,000inNewJersey facehungereveryday Approximately 175,000ofthemarechildren InMorris County,thefoodinsecurityrateis58%, whichis28,610people
Forthosewhoexperiencefoodinsecurity, foodpantriesandfoodbanksarelife changing;theKinnelonFoodPantryis gratefultobeoneofthoseorganizations. Theyprovideastigma freelocation whereparticipantscanreceivefoodand supplieswithoutthefearofbeingseenor judgedbyfriendsorneighbors,asthey resideatthelocalChurchoftheNazarene inButler,NJ.
Therecentspiralofinflationandincreased pricesforgrocerieshasmadeaccesstothe foodpantryimportantforall.MayorJames Fredasays,“WealwaysjokeaboutKinnelon beingaveryaffluenttown,butthere'sstill peoplehavingtroublemakingendsmeet It couldbeanexecutiveofacorporationandthey downsizeandlosetheirjob,oritcouldbean elderlycoupleintown,sothere'sawholemix ofpeopleinKinnelonwhousethefood pantry.”
JacquieSheane,directorofthefoodpantry since2018,hascountlessreasonsforwhythe foodpantryissovaluableandtheimportance ofsupportingthoseinneed Shesays,“When someonecomesintheycanbevery embarrassed;theycouldbecrying,maybelost theirjob,ortheirspousepassedaway,andit’s asadsituationsowedoitdelicatelyandwe interviewthem.It’sveryheart wrenchingat times”

Pre Covid,thepantrywasservicing450people; nowthatnumberhasreachedover4,000. PastorChuckCorradinosaid,“It[Covid]was reallyquiteaninterestingtime,wewere deliveringtohousesbuteveryonecame togetheranditworked.”

Teambondingisreallyimportantinordertofeelcomfortablewithyourteamandimproveteamwork.Byconnecting outsideofthesportitself,itallowstheteamtoconnectmoreduringthegameandplaythebestthattheycan.
