eing a MINI Cooper S owner since 2008 I must be honest to say I really didn’t like the MINI’s big Brother on steroids. I thought he was more like that relative that you have to put up with during the Holidays but are glad when he’s on his way. Little did I know that his big boy ways would become endearing to me. It takes me back to last spring for our drive challenge event. Here we were teamed up with professional drivers that put us through challenges that most of us would never dream of putting our own MINI through. We did emergency stopping, high speed cornering around orange cones, avoidance lane changes and off road style obstacles. Well I can say that this BIGGY sized MINI got under my skin and into my heart. You could say my Countryman heart grew as big as the challenges of that day. The Countryman is perfect for those that need 4 doors, larger luggage area and adult size seating front and back. As of 2012 MINI has added a bench seat so it can seat 5. It is MINI’s only 4 door and is available in my preference the Cooper S turbo model in ALL4 drive. For those snow boarders and skiers it

makes for a safe ride up to the slopes. For the rest of us if comes in handy for our Winter wonderland even though we are living in the banana belt of Ontario. So if you are still young at heart but life got in the way and now you have a Family to transport don’t do the boring lunchbox van thing. Laugh at life and add some needed FUN that’s MINI. Let’s talk mood lighting, bonnet stripes, different roof and side mirror covers, MINI clothing, and having the coolest car to drop the kids off at school. Have a MINI and you’ll also get great gas mileage, top safety, performance, motor of the year award winning design, and you will actually enjoy your commute. MINI is all about being different let your rebel ways shout by your choice of wheels come in to Budds’ MINI for an up close and personal introduction. Karin Germain Sales and Leasing Professional

editors’ notes

T

hrough out my adolescence I had the opportunity to participate in various athletic clubs from soccer to competitive cheerleading. You name it. If it was a sport, I played it! Although, I never quite got a chance to play hockey, something I find so strange growing up in hockey town-Milton. Through these experiences I learned so many skills and life lessons that are invaluable today. Qualities and attributes that I believe stemmed solely from my involvement in organized and recreational sport. These life lessons only empowered me to be who I truly wanted to be. Which is why this issue focuses largely on youth and initiatives taken to help them be successful. Anyone who dedicated their time to shaping the lives of youth & young adults deserves the recognition. The benefits of participating in organized sport are far too great to pass up. Don’t be afraid to enroll your kids or yourself in an activity, chances are you will learn things about yourself you never had the pleasure of knowing before.

s soon as you get off the exit ramp from the Gardiner and are officially in downtown Toronto, you know there’s something different about it. The city pulses with excitement, and looking around you can’t quite take everything in. There is always something to do for every area of interest. You’ll find shopping, restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs… the list goes on and on. Enter some of the city’s finest nightlife enhancers, Kleen Media. Headed by Sergio Senatore and Mark Holland, Kleen Media offers the people of Toronto and surrounding areas a vast spectrum of entertaining events at various hotspots around the city. “In a nutshell, we are Toronto’s leader in marketing, advertising, event planning, and cutting edge nightlife,” explains Senatore. Born in Toronto, Holland and Senatore know the city backwards and forwards, inside and out. It’s their years of experience that allow

them to put together the hottest events at the hottest nightclubs. Using influences from around the world these guys know how to throw one hell of a party. What separates Kleen Media from other agencies? Definitely exposure and experience. I’ve had the luxury of visiting some of the best venues in NYC, London and Paris and making friends in all those cities. Being exposed to their nightlife is a different experience in so many ways. Many of our clients are wealthy and have access to the most exclusive spots in the world. It’s what I call “the international language of cool” You mention words like “Hotel Marques des Riscal”, “Romera Restaurant”, “Sketch Bar”. I get it, they get it...we have the same mentality. I think understanding “what works” there and mixing it with Toronto’s nightlife culture elevates the night for our clients and separates us from the rest.

What makes Toronto a top party destination? Toronto without question is an international mecca for fashion, music, art, design and nightlife. When a city has that kind of reputation it’s bound to attract some hip people. You get the right

We love to have fun and throw a good party. But there’s also very strong business acumen when it comes to Kleen Media. Running our own successful company, we know what it takes to build a successful brand. Many of the brands we work with such as Extreme Fitness, Beauty Bar, Audi, Nike Canada, we are clients of ourselves, and therefore we get their client. We won’t work with just any brand, we have to be selective. Working with a product that motivates and excites us brings great results. We do our homework and then place the right people in the right space with the right brand and everyone is happy.

What do you think it truly takes to run a successful media company? You have to be in touch with the city and a metropolitan lifestyle. Aside from that a strong business sense helps. Understanding the ins and outs of the nightlife industry. But most importantly…you gotta have an aura that people want to be around you and do business with you.

Curb Appeal. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, says the old saying. That’s why it’s essential to “wow” potential buyers from the moment they first lay eyes on your home. It doesn’t take much to get curb appeal. Make sure the leaves are

raked and shrubs are trimmed; your porch is tidy; and the house is freshly painted. Good landscaping and a new coat of paint can not only generate buyer interest but can also increase the value of purchase offers. Update, but within reason. Some buyers know that they are going to renovate when they purchase a home; others look for a “turnkey” property that is move-in ready. If your house needs updating, consider doing some improvements. Cosmetic improvements, such as paint and wallpaper, help a house show better and are often inexpensive. Repair all

appliances to make sure they are in working order. And consider lowpriced facelifts to kitchen and baths such as repainting cabinets and replacing lighting fixtures and faucets. Staging. Staging can help a home sell faster. Move-or remove-furniture to make rooms look bigger. Elimi nate clutter and knick-knacks. Warm up rooms by bringing in pillows and fabrics. And don’t overlook outdoor living spaces when staging your home. If you’re considering selling your home, give me a call. I can help you get your home in top-notch shape to attract buyers.

hat does it take to go from playing music with friends in a garage to selling out stadiums of screaming fans? Aside from the obvious hard work and determination an artist needs to be great, according to Jake Gold who is a legend in the Canadian Music Industry. “I work with real artists who write and record and who are interested in being real artists because that’s what’s going to last,” said Gold. “I don’t really care how many friends you have on Facebook or any of that stuff. You have to be good. Not only that, you have to be great.” It was Gold along with associate Allan Greg who discovered and signed one of Canada’s favourite bands, The Tragically Hip, in 1986. After hearing a demo, Greg and Gold set up a showcase and instantly knew that they had come across a rarity. The Hip was signed on the spot. In 2003, the ‘Idol’ phenomenon came to Canada and Gold used his knowledge of the music biz as a judge on the show. Canadian Idol, which only aired for six seasons, helped launch the careers of such Canadian artists as Kalan Porter and Melissa O’Neil.

“I look for a whole number of things,” said Gold. “And I need to

see that special something.” The acts Gold works with now definitely have that special something. Gold and his business partner Shelley Stertz head The Management Trust which represents some of the biggest names in music. This includes Adam Cohen, Crash Karma, and fellow Canadian Idol judge Sass Jordan. “You have to believe in the artists you are working with,” said Gold. As well as lending a hand to the careers of talented musicians, Gold gives back to the community by engaging in a variety of charities. Gold produced the War Child concert in Winnipeg which raised over $400,000 for the organization. “It’s really important all the time to give back. I try and do as much as I can for that kind of work,” said Gold. “You have to give back, it’s your duty.” Gold is the Vice-Chairman of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) as well as a member of the JUNO Awards Television Talent Committee. He also continues to help bring talented musicians on to the music scene.

europe part ii (amsterdam)

24

T

his is the second of a two part series on traveling in Europe by Localiez photographer Grant Rushton.

The final destination with my children in Europe was Amsterdam. To cross from England to Holland we boarded an overnight Superferry run by StenaLine. The Line runs two of its ships at this crossing, each with over 500 cabins, large dining areas, a cinema, stores and more. Early in the morning, after a buffet breakfast, we arrived in the south of Holland. I wished the crossing had lasted longer. Leaving the ship we took a one hour train ride north to Amsterdam. When you arrive at the Amsterdam Central Train Station you are pretty much in the thick of Amsterdam; that is, everything is pretty much within walking distance from there.

Amsterdam, as you can imagine, is a beautiful old European city. When I think of this city I think of canals, bikes, museums and nightlife. The roads and walkways in the centre of the city are built around the canal system in a web pattern. Confusing at first, but the layout becomes understandable after a couple of days. Bikes and trams far outnumber cars and the chance of crossing the path of a bike commuter is probably the most dangerous thing about the city. You will find every museum imaginable here, even a sex museum and a torture museum. The main museums, and hence the most crowded, are the Rijksmuseum (state museum) and the Van Gogh museum (Van Gogh is pronounced Van Ho, with a lot of phlegm). The Heineken factory tour is also popular, especially since drinking their product is part of the tour.

One of the contrasts I enjoyed about Amsterdam were the hoards of people at night and then no people at all the following morning. My friend Charlie, a Canadian who now lives in Germany, drove in to hang out with us for a day. Now a seasoned European, he said he had never experienced such a crowded city. In the morning, by contrast, chairs are neatly stacked at a cafe, a worker hoses down cobblestone, and the odd pretty blond woman wooshes by me on her bike. Ah, the city at rest until another evening of fun!

At night the centre core of the city is full of tourists from other European countries, allowing Dutch businesses here to earn a very good income. Outdoor pubs, the Red Light District, and “Coffee Shops, where cannabis can be smoked openly, all sound like ingredients for a dangerous, out of control environment. The Dutch themselves are a people of moderation and look down on these things, but tolerate them (for now). The tourists here without

exception behaved themselves and we always felt safe walking the streets.

| localiez |

Useful tip: At the Anne Frank House we noticed a line up that stretched all the way around the block, with nearly a thousand people crammed between two lines of stanchions. But we found out we could purchase Skip The Line tickets through our hotel and we avoided the line up all together.

here is something about moving to a feel-good beat that lightens the heart and energizes the body. Music demands a physical response that originates from the depths of our beings, a feeling which draws many people to explore movement through the performing arts. Dance is a universal language whether dancing professionally in front of an audience, getting down with friends enjoying the weekend, or carrying out sacred ceremonial traditions. This is a language that technically trained dancer, choreographer, and actress Tré Armstrong has been speaking long before even being born. Often referred to as ‘Sexy Mummy’ Tré’s mother is her mentor. “ The world of dance chose me when I was in my mom’s womb, I have been bumping to Michael Jackson since I was negative 1 years old and I’ve never stopped.” Since beginning dance at the age of five, Tré has transformed into an amazing artistic and creative talent, now participating in various aspects of the industry from philanthropic projects to judging televised dance competitions. Tré has worked with industry giants like Missy Elliot and Jay-Z to name only a few, and is spreading her love for dance as far as she can reach.

A New Dance Academy for the Entertainment Industry is A New DAEI for aspiring dancers. Headed by Tré and her talented team of instructors, this new project is geared towards getting dancers industry-ready. And since Tré has crossed those lines herself, who better to be an example

Though acting as a permanent judge on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, Tré does far more than preside over dance competitions, or choreograph for clients. In the spirit of giving back to her community, the Trè Armstrong Give Back Foundation was formed, a notfor-profit project aimed at youth. The foundation hopes to “expand artistic expression and creative expression across Canada” while assisting youth to create their own initiative. Tré often shares with her students the importance of going for goals. “It’s never good to play with a gun, but if you are launching something, it better be: Ready. Fire. Aim. Don’t get caught up aiming at what you are going to do, just fire it off.”

to young guys and gals trying to do the same thing? Though it’s not only about the dance moves. “ You do a lot of self-actualization, there is a lot of innate leadership skills that are developed while you are a dancer because you’re learning how to create your own routines, your own moves, which means when you create something there is either an automatic… resistance towards what you have created or an automatic approval and when you learn to approve yourself and

28

give yourself permission you learn to build your self-confidence and self esteem” she says. Tré has dedicated her time and efforts to empowering youth and “building capacity” in the lives of at-risk youth and she doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. As a dancer herself, I wondered if Tré ever felt pressure from the industry to be thin or look a certain way, and what kind of advice she offers to others who are working through

Tré would like to thank the Black History Month Gala Committee and her Excellency the Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean for acknowledging her initiative within the artistic and cultural sectors of the creative arts industry. Congratulations Tré!

“…The saying that always governs me proper is, in life given the right to choose, always choose not to lose. Sometimes things are taken from us and we don’t have the right to choose, but when you are given that option to make a choice… look at that obstacle in the eye and say ‘this is about me, what is the best decision for me’ and become what I call, positively selfish.”

f you see that a person starts to put the foundation on your face to test it, it’s not the best first sign. A foundation needs to respect the neck area more than the face. The best place to test your foundation is between the jaw line and the neck. Place maybe two or three shades…a stripe of each, and you’ll see right away, let it sit on your skin for a few minutes, and you will see which foundation matches best, it has to match the neck first, than the face.” Visit http://arabellatrasca.tumblr.com/ for more beauty tips and advice from Arabella. Just like new shoes can give you that extra pep in your step, or your favorite jeans solidify your sultry swag, setting aside a few extra you minutes each morning can be more beneficial than you thought. With so many misconceptions surrounding makeup and its application, Localiez set out to uncover some truths. Over coffee at a busy java hut downtown Toronto, Arabella Trasca; Professional Make Artist and I sit down to chat about just what those truths might be. Arabella starts off by assuring me, and every woman who has ever given up on beautifying

themselves, that makeup application can be easy. “It honestly is not as hard as [women] imagine it to be. And I always say this, with practice, makeup becomes like brushing your teeth. If you practice everyday it does come to the point where you’re so comfortable when you put it on”. After attending Makeup Techniques and Management at Sheridan College, Arabella worked her way up in the retail chain to land a coveted position at MAC cosmetics as a trend specialist. “I deal with a lot of trends on my blog... I will say that I am not a huge trend believer… After 4 years studying trend I have noticed trend stays very, very similar with a few minor adjustments. What I can say is … if you are going to pay attention to trends, you should [follow] timeless trends.” If you’re a sucker for new bells and whistles when it comes to your beauty products, you have been duped. Consider yourself warned. Arabella says gimmicky products like vibrating mascara are just that - gimmicks. And when a product’s claims sound to good to be true they normally are. So beware of marketing ploys. Wearing red lipstick, or

applying a crisp clean liquid eye-liner, are classic trends that are always in style. Feeling good comes before looking good, something Arabella understands all too well. “There is something that gives me a bit of a high or a thrill when I see… (and this has happened a lot, as I teach make-up as well) that a woman won’t be able to even look in the mirror, or she’s not comfortable with her appearance , and then after a make-up lesson or application you see her sneaking around in the bathroom looking in the mirror. That feeling goes beyond just applying make-up on a woman, it just really does something for me, and I can’t imagine picking any other canvas than a face.” Admitting her love of painting, Arabella easily transfers her artistic talents onto the faces of many. She urges women to embrace a makeup routine that suits them personally, and to have fun in the process. A small amount of effort can provide big results. “Make that little bit of time for yourself because it goes a long way ... If you spend a few extra minutes in the morning you will feel different the rest of the day.”

f you ask any contemporary artist what the most difficult aspect of the art game is, they will say the whole nine yards. Although a few difficult tasks seem to come up on top such as the ability to reach a large audience and securing gallery space.

I

to gaze upon. Special projects by featured artists and the newly added Open Space sculpture and installation garden really adds new texture and excitement to the show as these pieces normally could not be accommodated in a smaller venue.

So what can painters and artists do to help resolve these common issues? Here’s where Art Toronto comes in to play. This show is possibly the best friend an emerging artist or gallery could have as thousands of art enthusiasts attend the fair. Coupled with the worlds’ most prominent curators and art organizations, the fair is a networking and artist representative’s dream.

Now touching on the real heart of the show - the artists. “The Art Game”, an installation created by Canadian artist Kent Monkman, brings the ‘trials and tribulations’ of an artist’s journey out in the open for those of us who are unsure of what it takes to make it in the art world. A realistic and in-your-face representation always does the trick.

The Toronto International Art Fair is one of Canada’s largest art events bringing together artists, galleries and curators to meet and mingle. It’s T.I.A.F’s goal to offer opportunities for all who are in the art game. The organization does this by providing the stage for exploration, discussion and, best of all, recognition of contemporary art both nationally and internationally.

With RBC hosting the Canadian Painting Competition in partnership with T.I.A.F., artists can submit a painting for a chance to have their work bought for $25,000 a price that can really help emerging artists. All in all the Toronto International Art Fair is a great medium for emerging galleries and artists to present their hard-laboured works.

Walking into the 12th Annual T.I.A.F as a first timer I couldn’t have asked for more from an art fair; it was a visual treat. The ability to meet artists and establish personal relationships with them is something special that separates this fair from others.

Take a look at some of the work from RBC C.P.C semi-finalists Tristram Lansdowne and Julie Trudel. Their works should be shared, so here are my favorites. Enjoy!

I had the pleasure of speaking with some artists and gained valuable insight into their works. This is something a consumer rarely gets - a personalized explanation of what your eyes have come

Have any artwork of your own you want to share? Send us an email at localiez@localiez.com and your artwork could be showcased in the next issue!

Don’t miss; Albe Back, Blaqstarr, RayRay, Key Mace and this new American artist based in Japan called Roro.” Having defined quality sound engineering for so many other successful artists means that the albums released by these artists are sure to be red hot. His name is Irko and the mark he leaves on the music industry will not be soon forgotten. -Samuel Off, The IEZ.

Leisure time is a newfound concept for the ever-busy engineer; “It just started happening about two years ago, before that I just didn’t have any leisure time at all” laughs Irko. Family is his number one passion when not at the studio, “family is the first thing, spending more time with them”. He has also recently been able to return to his true roots as a music lover; “when I was working twelve hours away [at the studio] the last thing that I wanted to do when I got home was play music” however now that his success has allowed him more time for himself, he has rediscovered why he got into the industry in the first place; his passion for quality music and sound.

|

Irko began to focus on the audio-engineering aspect of the music industry and his career began to blow up. “It was the Jay-Z album that I did” describes Irko “I just flew in from Venice to New York without knowing anyone” Jay-Z’s album Kingdom Come was a massive commercial success and achieved multi-platinum status. Irko has worked with many other platinum selling artists since then but has always remained humble and relied on the quality of his work to speak for itself. “Every time I’m in a new studio, with a new artist and a new production team it’s always a new milestone in my career.”

Irko currently enjoys a busy life travelling between his main residence in his adopted homelands’ capital and various studios throughout the world. “I’m all over the place. Mostly Washington D.C and Baltimore but also New York, New Jersey and of course, Italy.” Describes the high-in-demand engineer. Irko has yet to visit our city of Toronto, but promises to visit in the future; “I’ll consider this my formal invitation.”

Maurizio Sera, better known to his fans as Irko began his career in the music industry as a young man growing up in Venice, Italy. “In the beginning I was DJ’in and remixing, working with a lot of local artists” Irko remembers his first forays into beat-making and producing, “I was a producer initially, and I would bring my artists to the studio, but I was just never completely happy with the engineering.” In Venice, Irko became fascinated with the early work of then-unknown producer Timbaland. “He changed the music industry, at first he wasn’t well known and I knew that he was doing something no one else was.” Timbaland was a great inspiration for the young Irko.

Irko’s audio engineering career began to soar and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. “It certainly opened a lot of doors for me” smiles Irko.

ave you heard a song audio-engineered by Irko? If you listened to the crystal clear and razor sharp notes in songs done by artists like Jay-Z, JLo, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Talib Kweli or Kid Cudi, then chances are you’ve heard Irko and the quality sound he puts into every song he works on. “All of those who have their own sound, their own character” muses the Venice-born audioengineer when asked which artists he prefers to work with.

It was a sunny morning in August 2005 when Troy Newton opened the doors to his Main Street diner for the first time. Armed with a couple of frying pans and supported by his closest friends and family, he could never have guessed what was to begin that day or that his restaurant would grow into one of the most popular in the GTA.

Troy’s homestyle cooking, down to earth menu and courteous and friendly staff will make your visit an enjoyable one with a desire to return. Valentine’s Day will soon be here so in honour of that holiday that so many of you love or loathe, let’s take a look at some books exploring different types of love. From childhood sweethearts, to spurned lovers, to parental love...we’ll cover them all! Book Clubs The World As We Know It by Joseph Monninger his novel begins with Ed and Allard, two brothers, whose goal is to skate to Canada. The brothers place themselves in jeopardy in order to rescue Sarah and a lifetime friendship is born. As the years progress, the brothers grow up with Sarah as an integral part of their lives. Over time the bonds of friendship form a sound basis for a romantic relationship. Don’t worry, I won’t include a spoiler alert....if you want to know who wins Sarah’s heart, you’ll have to read the book!

life choices. Jack and Eden’s friendship blooms as their connection deepens throughout the journey. The story’s oscillation between the hopeful present and the past does a delightful job of lightening up serious subject matter. The charm of the present will help readers to grow towards acceptance of the past and keep engaged along the way. Book clubs can expect to experience some great dialogues about the differing philosophies and treatments of those with mental illnesses.

As their relationship develops tragedy strikes. In order to cope with their monumental grief, their life-long friendship is suspended. Will their flame be re-kindled? Again, you’ll have to read it to find out. Book clubs and solo readers will find this story captivating. The tale weaves themes of friendship and nature throughout. Monninger adds some surprising twists to separate this tale from your typical childhood sweetheart novel. Those who love the wilderness will especially enjoy following Ed, Allard, and Sarah over the North American landscapes. Outside the Lines by Amy Hatvany (available for sale 2/7/12) Outside the Lines is a fantastic book club choice. Guaranteed to foster some heated discussions and engage your club long enough to finish off those excellent bottles of wine that you ordered at the start of your evening!

Beach Bums Sweet Misfortune by Kevin Alan Milne Are you one of those jaded people dreading another passing of cupid’s holiday? I bet that you didn’t know that there were various Christian martyrs named Valentine. Doesn’t seem so romantic now, does it? If you’re feeling a little pessimistic in the romance department, you should meet Sophie Jones, the protagonist of Sweet Misfortune by Kevin Alan Milne. Sophie Jones has a lot of baggage but she doesn’t sit around and mope about it. She turns that energy into creative energy. As a chocolatier, her star product is misfortune cookies. The cookies don’t sit very well in your mouth....they’re bitter (like someone we know) but the topper is the fortune that they contain - it’s a misfortune. Examples include “You will soon fall in love. Caution: when people fall, something usually breaks.” Customers flock to her shop to torture themselves with the latest dire predictions. So why is Sophie so bitter? Many reasons but the main one has to do with Garrett Black, her ex-fiancé. When he suddenly walks back into her shop wanting to reconcile their differences, Sophie lays down what she thinks is an unattainable challenge for him. She suggests that he take out a classified ad seeking lasting happiness. If Garrett can gather 100 acceptable responses, Sophie will go out with him. Is he successful? Pick it up and read for yourself!!!! Happy Reading! Stayed tuned for the next issue revealing more exciting reads from Simon & Schuster!

P

om-poms, cheering, and bouncing girls has been the image people synonymously associate with professional cheerleading. This public misconception has been deep rooted in the NFL/CFL imagery seen on TV. However, as Natalie Vonlanthen from Power Cheer Toronto indicated, Professional Cheerleading has far more to offer than bouncing up and down and shaking pom poms.

Currently, the PCT family has grown to over 500 competitive, pre-competitive, class and school team athletes training on a weekly basis. Participants start as young as 4 years of age on the Mini PreCompetitive team. The majority of their team members are 8 -18 years of age. PCT also offers two teams for athletes over 18 -these are high level skill teams that compete at the World Championships of Cheerleading (placing Top 10 in 2011).

Power Cheer Toronto (PCT) first opened its doors in the spring of 2004 when owners Nicole, CJ and Natalie decided that this was the perfect time to start a new Cheer club. Their premier year started out with thirty-three athletes subdivied into three different teams. Today, Power Cheerleading continues to evolve into a sport as more and more athletes are attracted to the unique combination of gymnastics, acrobatics, and dance.

Power Cheerleading is an excellent choice because it provides athletes with a REP level experience without the 20 hours per week commitment. PCT’s All Star Cheer Teams compete successfully on an international scale and dominate in Canada. Interestingly, when PCT cheerleaders compete at the World Championships, they compete against other Power Cheerleaders from China, Germany, Finland, Norway, Japan, Korea, Slovinia and beyond, and in all of

As a former cheerleader, I can attest that the number one benefit of being part of a Power Cheerleading team is not the trophies, but rather the life lessons and the friendships made along the way. click does the trick

To train without the fear and punishment you have to find a trainer who uses reward-based training, preferably someone who can show you how to Clicker Train your dog. Clicker Training is a positive training technique which uses the unique sound of a clicker paired with a reward to indicate to your dog that he/she has done something correct. Clicker training produces thinking dogs. They learn to solve puzzles and they learn that their behaviour earns rewards or does not. The best thing about Clicker Training is the bond that it develops between handler and dog – it allows you to train without punishment and without damaging your dog’s fun-loving attitude.

Take that excited puppy that we talked about earlier and go back in time to when he was just excited to see the oncoming dog. This time his person is armed with a clicker and really yummy rewards. His person sees an oncoming dog approaching and gets Puppy’s attention. When Puppy looks at his person, they click and give the reward. Puppy is now torn between the oncoming dog and his person, but every time Puppy looks at his person, he hears a click and gets a reward. So Puppy continues to look at his person. When they are a couple feet from the other dog, Puppy’s person says “okay” and Puppy gets to happily greet and interact with the other dog. Soon Puppy learns that he will get to see the oncoming dog, but if he watches his person when a dog is approaching, he can earn rewards and still get to play – the best reward!

| localiez |

Many punishment-based trainers will tell clients that you do not need treats to get a behaviour, you just need to be “dominant”. These trainers use corrections such as a jerk of the leash when the dog does something wrong. In this style of training, the dog is not motivated by just wanting to please you; it is trying to avoid the correction. The problem with this type of training is that, while punishment may decrease the frequency of an unwanted behaviour, research shows it also can produce other unwanted behaviour. The outcome of a punishment can be unpredictable. Take for example a puppy that excitedly and playfully pulls toward new dogs. When his person yanks the leash to “correct” that behaviour, Puppy begins to see oncoming dogs as a predictor of the “correction”. Out of anxiety Puppy begins to bark at oncoming dogs and so the “corrections” become more severe. Puppy begins to associate oncoming dogs with the “corrections” and out of fear and anxiety his barking turns into growling, snarling and lunging at the end of his leash.

2012

op media has begun to highlight dog training, to show what is possible with even a little effort. Unfortunately, the featured trainers often use punishment-based training, so often the audience associates dog training with jerks of the leash, yelling and very little reward.

valentine secrets for every relationship status

T

he time has come, yet again, to celebrate one of the most loved and hated calendar holidays of the year. Whether you place great importance on the day or think it is a sham, check out the secrets to surviving V-Day whether you’re single or in a relationship.

Locked Down?

| localiez |

www.localiez.com

|

2012

They say Valentine’s Day is a waste of time and money and is not worth celebrating when you’re in a relationship!

44

of your VDay celebration, be sure that you take the time to show your love that you care and they are appreciated! Single and Sexy?

The Truth…Valentine’s Day is indeed one of the most overcommercialized calendar holidays in the year! However, whether you have been dating for weeks or years it is important to acknowledge this day. You are far better off to spend a fragment of time and your paycheck to show your partner you care, versus spending the next 12 months trying to make up for a catastrophic Valentine’s Day.

Before you remove VDay from your calendar, or have a pity party about your single status, pump the breaks and re-think your outlook! VDay isn’t only about romance; it is about love, and who better to show love than yourself ?

They say…Valentine’s Day should be no different than any other day, if you’re doing your job and showing your partner that you love him/her all year long.

Use VDay as an excuse to spoil yourself with some good old pampering and goodies. This could be an over the top outing to a local spa or a “mini-shopping spree-all-for-me” excursion. On a tight budget? Remember, love don’t have to cost a thing! After work on the 14th, consciously slow your evening down and take time to do some of the indulging that doesn’t usually lend well to weeknights-- or weekends for that matter. How about making a chocolate fondue for dessert or your favourite dish? Give yourself a full mani/pedi including a paraffin wax peel for the ultimate spa experience. Whatever form of spoiling you choose, be sure it is for your own enjoyment and not to make up for any spoiling you feel you’re missing out on.

The Truth for HER: This should be true, but on a day when ladies around the world are being spoiled by their men (or women); do you really want to be the one who did nothing for her? Also, remember the disappointment wouldn’t just end with her, the death glares from her friends and family would likely match those of a firing squad until you make it up to her. The Truth for HIM: Not many men out there would admit to losing sleep if their girlfriend skipped VDay. However, men are only human and also need to feel loved and appreciated. Surprise your man with a thoughtful gift that he can enjoy – maybe even one that can be enjoyed together? He may not call all his buddies to brag, but I am sure he won’t forget a meaningful gift anytime soon! They say…You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. The truth…People in relationships normally do know what they’ve got, except they forget how much effort is truly needed for their relationship to work. Regardless of the simplicity or elaborate nature

Indulge yourself !

Spread the love Often times singles feel that they need to “stick together” on VDay. Spending time “helping” single friends feel cared for is an admirable job, but choose wisely! Spend your evening with others trying to “spread the love” to avoid turning a fancy and fun night into a night of ex-bashing or hating on the opposite sex. On a tight budget? Rather than going out for a meal, deliver Valentine’s cards

2012

In the end, VDay is only one day out of the year. Although it may be a dim reminder of your singleton status, it will pass. Remember to keep your head up and focus on having fun and enjoying the single life while you can! And if all else fails, remind yourself that all those
