“fall rattler”cruise

The day came and went and it was time to head home, memories and experiences that would make any car lover jealous. Car culture is a thing of beauty, people from all over with different back grounds, occupations and age, meeting for one common purpose, driving pleasure! One quick final drive thorough Bala and we were on our way, but not before we made one final pass, through the Rattler!

2011

|

After a quick stop at a local baseball diamond for the annual group shot of all the MINI’s we made our way to Bala for the Cranberry festival. As we entered the main road that leads us through town, we were greeted by hundreds of people pointing and snapping some pictures of the rare MINI Coupé. After driving up and down a few times in search of parking, we finally found a spot and parked the Coupé. It didn’t take long for a crowd to form around the MINI and see the impact that the car had. As we observed the MINI from across the street, we were able to overhear pedestrians uttering “hey look at that MINI!” and “what kind of MINI is that?” as they walked by, again, huge grin on my face.

www.localiez.com

We departed Budds’ MINI Oakville at 8:15am after we had our official unveiling of the new Coupé along with a handful of our MINI clients. We formed a convoy of MINI’s as we traveled East on the QEW tuning many heads, getting waves and horn honks. As we merged onto the 400 North we quickly spotted a few other MINI’s who were clearly heading to the first checkpoint and meeting area (Webers). Our convoy quickly grew in numbers and instantly gave us all a felling of joy and excitement as the timehonoured car club sensation set in. Our group was one of the first to arrive but the MINI presence in the parking lot soon exploded and a sea of bright colors, strips and checker flags soon flooded the entire parking area. Instantly, strangers became friends over a common passion and everyone was taking pictures and sharing their stories and experiences with their MINI. After some delicious Webers hamburgers, at 11am we departed and began our 42km cruise to Bala, the part of the trip we were all excited for.

After a short drive north on the 400, we ditched the dull boring highway for some fun country back road driving where the MINI Coupé came alive. Sport mode engaged, upgraded black 18” JCW wheels further enhanced this connection with the road and a huge grin on my face could be seen by all. The lowered stance and streamline shape of the Coupé offers an improved sensation of handling and control. I can honestly say I now truly understand what adoring MINI owners mean by “Go-Cart-Feeling”. The Coupé handled superbly, the steering was precise and the car was predictable, all that made for sheer driving enjoyment.

| localiez |

L

ast month we had the great pleasure of driving the all new 2012 MINI Cooper Coupé S on what we believe are roads that were meant for this car. Budds’ MINI Oakville participated in the annual “Fall Rattler” cruise organised by the Southern Ontario MINI Club (SOMC) from the famous Webers Hamburgers on highway 11 in Orillia, all the way up to Bala Bay in Muskoka for the annual Cranberry festival. The road stretched for 42km and offered an array of driving excitement for all levels of experience, from tight twists and turns to challenging switch backs and to long swooping banks, they call this pass the Rattler for a reason. The all new MINI Coupé was really at home here and we had an out of this world opportunity to set the Coupé through its paces.

T

he driving fun sewn into the fabric of every MINI can now be enjoyed with the roof up or down in the brand’s first convertible model designed strictly for two people. The MINI Roadster is the sixth model in the MINI product lineup, and will give the small car segment in Canada another innovative shot in the arm. Following hot on the heels of the MINI Coupé, the Roadster will launch in Canada on February 25th, 2012, just in time for the spring selling season. Final Canadian specifications and pricing will be provided closer to market launch. The MINI Roadster is a cutting-edge, typically MINI interpretation of the compact, two-seater sports car concept. It provides a faithful reproduction of the MINI design language within the proportions

of a roadster, with a clear focus on two-seat design and the open-air driving experience. Unmistakable design features such as the short overhangs, a powerful over-the-wheel stance and high waistline typical of MINI underline the car’s brand identity. The MINI Roadster will come to Canada with three familiar, powerful yet efficient engine variants, each of which provide that full-blooded go-kart feeling that we know and love: MINI John Cooper Works Roadster Featuring a 4-Cylinder engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology, 208hp, a 0-100km/h time of 6.6 seconds and standard John Cooper Works aerodynamic kit.

MINI

This holds true whether the roof of the Roadster is open or closed. The standard manually-operated soft-top allows the driver to usher in his next dose of open-top driving pleasure without a second thought. It is opened by turning the release level on the windscreen frame by 130 degrees, and swivelling the soft-top back in a single movement behind the seats, where it locks into place. The process for closing the roof again is triggered by pressing a button positioned between the roll-over bars, which allows the roof to extend back out of its anchorage points assisted by gas-pressured springs. It can then be pulled forward with the help of the release lever and fixed in place again against the windscreen frame.

2011

With the MINI Coupé and Roadster launching in time to have a real impact on 2012, there is no question we all have a lot to be excited about for next year. And the best part is…there is still more to come! ... BE MINI

|

While the dimensions of the MINI Roadster largely mirror those of the Convertible, the Roadster is differentiated in one very important way as it stands 20mm lower than the Convertible and therefore features a lower centre of gravity. Furthermore, the new two-seater cuts a distinctive, sleeker figure with a windscreen frame that is raked by an additional 13 degrees compared to the Convertible. Further differentiating the Roadster from the Convertible is an active spoiler – as featured on the recently launched MINI Coupé – that extends automatically when the speedo crosses 80km/h, and retracts again when the speed drops to below 50 km/h. Despite these differences, the design of the MINI Roadster faithfully reflects the principles of MINI design language.

MINI Canada has launched the MINI Roadster Closed Room on MINI.ca, providing registrants exclusive content, including an outstanding 360 degree interior image. Please feel free to direct any interested customers to the site, and check it out yourselves at http://www.mini.ca/en/closedroom/index.html

MINI Cooper Roadster Featuring a 4-Cylinder engine with fully variable valve management based on BMWs Valvetronic, 121hp and a 0-100km/h time of 9.4s.

Of course, the MINI Roadster provides all the premium features that we are accustomed to from the other models. The equipment profiles for the Roadster will be derived from those of the MINI Coupé, and full optional equipment and packaging details will be provided closer to market launch.

editors’ notes

A

s the winter draws nearer and temperatures drop from enjoyable to intensely despised, it is this time of year that reminds me of just how much I have in my life to be thankful for. I have food, supportive friends and family, warm clothes and shelter (all of which I am so grateful to have), however some people unfortunately are not blessed with these necessities. Some have none at all. With the winter season filled with opportunities to spend countless dollars on gifting, meals and other miscellaneous and often unexpected items, this season does not encourage those with empty pockets, or hungry tummies. Rather it loads on the pressure. This holiday season try to make an effort to help support others who may be less fortunate within your community. Make a donation of food or warm clothing to one of the many food banks and organizations accepting donations across the country and beyond. Below you will find some helpful links that can guide you in your choice to give back, making this winter a bit warmer and brighter for someone who truly needs it. And remember, it doesn’t have to be a solo mission. Invite family, friends, and co-workers to join in and participate with a gift of giving. Email me at kas@localiez.com to share any experiences you may have about how you gave back this season. May the warmth be with you! Kas. Foodbanks

e might think of eyeglasses as something nerdy. Remember... “four eyes”? It was the most common bullying phrase among children when I was growing up. Back then, eyeglasses consisted of pieces of hard plastic or metal attached to glass. They typically sat very awkward at the end of our noses, and more likely than not, got in the way of looking down because they were not properly fitted. At the Oliver Peoples Trunk Show inside of “All Eyes On Me Optical” in Milton, Ontario, Localiez Magazine

had a chance to find out that eyeglasses can feel good and look good, putting that nerdy/”four eyes” claim to rest! Along with its beautiful, modern, and chic overall style, this high-end optical boutique is full of the finest international brands in eyewear. We were fortunate enough to view their top of the line eyewear personally brought in by Anushka, one of the Oliver Peoples’ representatives. n partnership with the Town of Milton, the Milton Stags Basketball Club held their grand opening ceremonies on Sunday November 27, 2011. This kick-off event was held to officially unveil the new gymnasium facility located inside the newly expanded Milton Sports Center. The support was outstanding as each of the Milton Stags basketball teams paraded inside the new gymasiums. It was inspiring to watch the young Staglets, ranging between 4 and 7 years of age, leading the parade. The house league teams followed directly behind the young ones, and they were followed by various Rep teams. The crowd was enthusiastic as Mayor Kranz alongside Coach Mike Borlongan shared their visions and hopes for the future of basketball in Milton, Ontario. The day continued with many of the teams playing games in the new facility. Keep your eyes open for the Milton Stags! For more information check out their website at www.stagsbasketball.com .

hen it comes to video games, new or old, modern or classic, Toyratt Retro Games-Toys-Vinyl in Milton, Ontario has the supply every gamer craves. Milton residents are proud of their locally-owned games store. According to store owner Ivano Petrilli, “they get first crack at everything that comes into the store; my key to success is keeping it local.”

every item that comes into the store was bought or traded by fellow game enthusiasts and collectors. This allows Petrilli to stock some special items which are unavailable almost anywhere else. “I’ve had 80s boom boxes, a complete Star Wars set from 1977, rare comic books from the 60s and 70s and lots of vintage audio equipment like turn-tables and record players.”

Stocking games, controllers and consoles of every video game era has allowed Toyratt to tap into the hearts of true gamers. From classic Nintendo and Atari consoles to sleek modern Xbox 360s and Playstaion 3s, Toyratt has everything covered. Although the most modern titles are available, Petrilli says that “it’s the classics that are the key to true gamers’ hearts.”

When it comes to Christmas shopping for the family gamer, why not offer the pleasant surprise of an original classic video game console? People tired of hearing the bullets and blood of popular modern games will be thrilled to see and play a classic game from their childhood. Younger gamers can discover the addicting pleasure of the original Nintendo or Atari classics. “People always go back to the original classics...the grand-daddys,” Petrilli has observed. “They’re just good old fun!”

If video games aren’t your thing, Toyratt also boasts an incredible variety of vintage vinyl records, always a favourite for music enthusiasts looking for buried treasures. “We have everything from classic rock, jazz, soul, motown, etc. We have about four thousand records in stock, all of which are original pressings, no re-releases,” Petrilli says of his massive record selection. Of course no real games shop can be complete without the namesake of the operation - toys. Toyratt has everything from vintage and modern Transformers, GI Joe, Star Wars characters, A-Team, Lego, etc. Items that can really bring fans back to their fond memories. “Our toys are for fans, people who want to relive part of their childhood.” What makes Toyratt’s inventory so interesting and unique is that

You can find Toyratt Retro Games–Toys-Vinyl at 781 Main Street east in Milton, Ontario. Check out some of their inventory on their Facebook page, where you can find updates about new and exciting items coming into the store, follow Toyratt on Twitter or just check out some of the cool demos available on YouTube. Be sure to stay informed about their Deal-of-the-Day offers and discounts when buying multiple games. Online shopping and shipping is not available, but for good reason because even if you walk into Toyratt with one specific item in mind, there’s no telling what you might walk out with. It’s the Toyratt in-store experience which keeps people coming back time and time again. Samuel Off, Localiez Magazine

the who’s who guide:

industry leaders you need to know

A

nyone in the entertainment industry will tell you, success is not gifted to anyone, whether you are a model, actor, actress or recording artist everyone needs to put their nose to the grind, in order to be successful. However it’s how you go about grinding out your success that matters the most. Attaining success in your career doesn’t always have to be difficult or cost an arm and a leg, especially if you have the right team backing you. Now with P.I.N.K Publicity, artist development can be cost effective and extremely beneficial. So beneficial that we thought we would share a little bit about them with you. Welcome to the Who’s Who mini guide, introducing P.I.N.K Publicity.

{

| localiez |

www.localiez.com

|

2011

What is P.I.N.K Publicity about and how do you plan on making deep impact in the entertainment industry?

16

P.I.N.K is an acronym that stands for Promotion Image Network Knowledge. Our company focuses on artist development incorporating the above-mentioned attributes. We incorporate all elements of a complete plan for an artist’s development from demographic analysis and imaging to product development. A lot of artists believe they record a record, take a few photos and then become stars or the next Internet success story. Our company breaks down the process to show clients that there is a thought process to everything. Every color is carefully selected, every stage movement and signature move is developed and perfected and every interview is rehearsed or well trained for. P.I.N.K provides the team necessary to execute a specific plan for our clients.

{

Why do emerging artist’s benefit from artist development programs that you offer?

What does P.I.N.K bring to the table that differentiates you from other agencies? Artists feel like they need a million dollar budget to succeed when all they really need is a game plan and the right team. Of course there needs to be an investment on your part, however it is crucial to have a plan and the right attitude. The chemistry of our team and contractors has been in development for several years. Through previous trial and error we have learned what it takes to produce results and understand how to come together as a team. We pride ourselves in unity and helping each other succeed. The only way to achieve success is through supporting your industry. Our company is predominantly females with a few strong men behind us; some of the women we work with are irreplaceable and are the roots of our success. Tina Alleyne from Doo or Dye studios is always there to ensure that we (Connie Amartey and Lisa Persaud) always look our best. At every event we put on or host, you will see Mellycakes as well. Her desserts add that special touch to every event, after party and single

{

P.I.N.K has now expanded to New York and the islands, which has opened up the potential for international discovery. Not only for emerging artists but also established Canadian artists looking to cross over to international territory. We have hired some of the best that the entertainment industry has to offer; from stylists from BET and film to celebrity vocal coaches. We have incorporated the latest and greatest technology into our programs to leverage exposure and content marketing for our clients. From interactive chat boards to videos being sent via Bluetooth to your phone, we are always looking for the latest greatest thing.

release! Lori Petteplace is a rock that reminds us that people are selfless.

{

What is one piece of advice you would share with any aspiring artist, actor, model wishing to be successful in the industry? Invest in yourself and do not expect things to happen for you overnight. Do not feel entitled to success, because you have to work

for it and train. Always appreciate the people around you who devote their time and energy into you, as you never know what they can do for you in the future. Always be prepared for opportunity and do not blame anyone else if you are not ready. Love what you do first and the hard work doesn’t feel like work and don’t forget to always say thank you, it goes a long way.

he rising star of Canadian RnB Jay Vado describes the recent success of his single Breathe and Shake, which has been given plenty of spins on Much Vibe. Initially known for collaborating with Harvey Stripes on Stripes’ smash hit Material Girl in 2009, Vado has since been working steadily on his own musical career. “Harvey is from the same city as me, he is one of the hardest workers and grinders in the city,” Vado says of his fellow Ottawa-born musician. The combination of Stripes’ pounding lyrics, and the velvet smooth hook sung by Vado proved to be a winning formula. “I was gettin’ calls from Miami, [producer] Beat Merchant asking me what the hell I did with that song.” As the wave of Material Girl gained momentum, Jay Vado began to turn a lot of heads in the music industry. “That song helped me gain a lot of fans from all over the world, it surprised me, but I always knew it was going to be a hit”.

22

Born to a Venezuelan father who was a DJ and a Lebanese mother who sang choir, music is in Jay Vado’s blood. “On Sunday mornings there was always lots of Latin music being played in the house,” Vado remembers of his childhood. However, it was Vado’s older sister, who truly inspired him to musically perform. “My sister was a professional dancer and choreographer, she raised me and brought me to concerts left and right. Seeing performances all the time, I knew that I wanted to do that.” Once he started performing he found he just couldn’t stop. When it comes to Vado’s music today, fans and critics alike have described it as smooth vocals, catchy hooks and beats that get you on the dance floor, period. “Where I am today I discovered myself,” Vado says of his unique styling. “Everything I’ve applied myself to I came across and developed myself ”. The massive successes of Material Girl and Breathe and Shake have left fans anxiously anticipating jay Vado’s first full-length album Lendemain, set

to release early 2012. Lendemain, which is the French word for “the next day” or “the morning after” has been awhile in the making. “I was getting a lot of offers [from producers and fellow musicians] but I wanted to make sure that whatever I do is gold.” Showcasing his versatility, Vado has offered a sneak-peek of his title track Lendemain, which he performs in French. “I was born in Ottawa but moved to Quebec when I was three years old and learned French,” says Vado. He wants to be able to write and perform hit songs in both official languages of his country.

When asked what his expectations are for the release of Lendemain, Vado replies that “hopefully I will be more internationally known, I want to go global with it.” Being able to reach new demographics all over the world is the goal for Vado. Be sure to keep an ear out for Lendemain’s release early 2012, fans are already anticipating the albums second single entitled Higher. Excitement is building. -Samuel Off, Localiez Magazine

don’t ever stop: an interview with

sara wilkinson

After a year performing at a dinner theatre in Moncton, Sara is now living in Toronto and passionately pursuing a career in music with her voice as her instrument. Sara cites classic influences such as Judy Garland and Joni Mitchell, but also contemporaries like KT Tunstall. Instead of being discouraged by turning on the radio, hearing hits that only vaguely resemble music just pushes Sara more.

She refers to the songs as stories that should be shared, every one of which is different. Although musical style isn’t easy to define, Sara describes herself as “a combination of folk and jazz and rock and soul” and a lyricist more than anything. Her songs are slow but still filled with emotion as Sara writes how she feels, and can’t hide the affect music has had in her life. “Music has given me so much strength… it keeps me going. It says don’t stop, don’t ever stop.”

| localiez |

Sara is intensely busy. She works two musical jobs outside Toronto,

|

is constantly writing, recording frequently, is trying to get her music on iTunes, plays gigs whenever she can and is also writing a one-woman show called the Living Room. The show is an excellent promotion tool for Sara’s talent, as she says that it is very difficult as a solo act “because you are it… you are the everything.” The Living Room is a showcase for the vast collection of songs that Sara has written over the past 15 years.

eing anything other than a vocal artist was never an option for Sara Wilkinson. Born to a violinist father and piano-teaching mother, Sara was raised on melody. In her house, “music was always a second language… sometimes even the first.” Although born in Toronto, Sara grew up in Brampton and attended Mayfield Secondary School for the arts in Caldeon. Sara continued her artistic education by studying at St. Lawrence College in Brockville.

London was touristy and crowded at most of the well known landmarks: Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. In places like these you are made to stand in long line ups and pay fairly hefty admission fees (Westminster Abbey cost about $75.00 CDN for three of us). What appealed to me most were the nontouristy things we experienced.

When he noticed Julian’s long wispy hair during the fitting he told us about one of his other musician clients, Brian May, the guitarist of Queen. “Brian May has extraordinary hair!” I’m afraid I’ve run out of space, so I will fill you in on the Netherlands and, in particular, Amsterdam in the next issue of Localiez Magazine.

Unfortunately, the woman in the shop told us the hat maker was away but she would try to get him on his cell phone and we should come back in ten minutes. We came back in about twenty Liverpool was our first destination, which is minutes and what we learned was that the hat clean and pleasant and not as run down and maker was on his way to a funeral and he had industrial as you might expect a working class come back to see us. His wife was with him too city to be. The purpose of visiting Liverpool of and she wore a hat with black mesh covering course was to see the hometown of the Beatles, her face. We apologized profusely about the and one of the best ways of doing that is to situation but the hatter seemed very pleased to take the Magical Mystery Tour by bus. Our meet us and be of service. He put a strange guide took us to Strawberry Field, the boyhood measuring device on Julian’s head and turned homes of each Beatle and, the highlight for me, some screws to record the correct fit. The hat Penny Lane, a longer than I imagined road filled would have to be stretched for a few days and with landmarks mentioned in the famous song. monogramed with Julians initials in Helvetica And you know what, I don’t even like that song! and then mailed back to Canada for him.

I decided to take two of my kids to Europe this summer, letting them each choose a country. My daughter Genny chose England and my son Julian chose the Netherlands. Since we wanted to experience Europe at our own pace, we booked the air, hotel and just a few excursions to maximize our flexible time. The tricky part was traveling within the different parts of Europe once we landed there. Should we go by bus, rail, ferry and should we book one-way tickets or a long term pass? Our travel agent Banerji at Marlin Travel helped us make the best choices, did all the booking and then organized all our tickets and itinerary in an easy to follow folder we carried with us. Still keeping our trip flexible enough to make it truly OUR adventure.

Julian, an aspiring musician, came up with the idea that now would be a good time to purchase a top hat he had always wanted. We went to many posh department stores in London, including the famous Harrods, in search of this hat but none them sold them anymore. Finally, Julian tracked down Hetherington Hats on the internet and we traveled to find this shop. Unfortunately, the street the shop was listed at had only rows of townhouses and no shops. Just as we were about to give up a young man we met on the sidewalk told us the hat maker worked out of the lower level of his townhouse and he pointed out which house. Sure enough we made our way down some stairs and found a crowded and eccentric shop filled floor to ceiling with top hats and bowlers.

very one that loves the Olympics may tune in and watch the worlds greatest athletes attempt to attain the true spirit of sportsmanship, as they participate in the Winter or Summer Olympics. Since 776 B.C the Olympics has been the most prominent sporting event reaching millions of spectators around the globe. In 1996 Canadians witnessed a piece of their very own Olympic history when track and field star Donovan Bailey sprinted out a world record and gold medal in the 100-meter dash. The

outcome of these games offered Canadians a much-needed boost of inspiration in regards to our presence in the realm of athletics. Having reached such success in his early 20s, Localiez Magazine was curious as to what the former worlds fastest man was up to. Nearly a decade and a half post track, Bailey is still pushing to achieve more. Having accomplished what some would never dream of doing, most would assume that Bailey had reached success, but he feels differently. “I don’t think that I have reached it yet. I think that there’s something I was placed here to do that I haven’t accomplished. Therefore with education, exposure, travel and being around the right people

at some point I will get to that and when I get to that defining moment I’ll let you know.” IEZ: What do you consider success? How do you define your successes and failures? DB: I think success is having the ability to have a great night sleep because it simply means that you daily goals are met. And if your daily goals are met, it means that your short and long term goals will be met. IEZ: Since leaving the realm of track and field, what causes & organizations have you funneled your passion into? DB: Well I am doing a lot of charity work with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and with ParticipACTION… I started with Big Brothers actually when I was a teenager in Oakville, my

brothers and I volunteered as Big Brothers. I sit on the board of Brothers and Sisters of Canada. I’m also the spokesperson for ParticipACTION. I am doing some contract work to prepare for the 2012 Olympic games… consulting the team and I just recently just did a PSA for the Canadian Lung Association. IEZ: Describe your strongest and weakest characteristic? And how do you apply them in your current life. DB: I think my strongest and my weakest is the exact same thing. It’s massive impatience and intolerance. I think that what I did for a living being intolerant and not being patient was good. I was someone who wanted to get in, get things done and leave, but clearly that doesn’t always work. Working with people

sometimes you have to have the ability to take a deep breath, listen and understand what others are trying to say to you. IEZ: Who are your mentors and what have you learned from them? DB: Biggest mentor is my dad because he just taught me structure, discipline, and also to finish what I’ve started. He lived that and he taught that. I have had various business mentors throughout the world and I continue to be a student of them. What I’ve learned from track & field is that you find the very best coach. And in business as in fatherhood as in life I try to associate myself with those people who are incredible in all of those categories. Seeking out new challenges in life. Bailey expressed he’s not quite finished showing us what he’s got, and there is no room for coming up short. “My biggest fear is failure, and so that’s something I [rarely] speak

book clubs and beach bums Special Holiday Edition ... By Shannon White

I

n addition to books, shopping is my specialty! With the holiday season so rapidly approaching, I thought that I’d help you play Santa to those people in your life “bookworm style”. Instead of the usual recommendations based on genre, let’s go out of the box and provide some recommendations based on personality quirks. For the Nosy… Come on, you can admit it. Everyone has a friend that they adore despite the fact that they are always keen to know all the latest gossip. For those nosy parker types, why not select a biography – the latest juice on those celebrities that you love or even love to hate! Selecting a biography can be more difficult than it seems though. Many biographies can be extremely detailed and of a technical nature. Personally, I prefer those that read more like a novel and keep you engaged. Bossypants by Tina Fey is sure to have your side splitting and pages turning! It is a gossipers dream – little anecdotes of the hilarious life of Tina Fey. A definite holiday delight!

For the Engineer or Handy Man…

38

Everybody has that special someone on their shopping list who is continually tinkering in the garage or supercharging your lawnmower. Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam Jr will not disappoint -- A must!!!! This is one of my favourite books of all time despite the fact that I am neither an engineer nor a handy man. It is a truly inspirational story about the life of a young boy growing up in a coal mining town during the space race of the 60’s. Homer Hickam grew up as the son of the mine’s top boss. Seen almost as a disappointment to his father with a mediocre aptitude for school, Homer forges his own path in life. He sets the lofty goal of working for NASA one day -- something many boys growing up in the 60’s aspired to do. The difference between Homer and all those boys is the fact that he succeeded. He and his posse form the BCMA (Big Creek Missile Agency) set about launching and engineering their own rockets. The town rallies behind them and follows their journey through their adolescence as they come of age. You’ll really appreciate what the boys achieve by setting their goals and relentlessly pursuing them. Homer’s determination, drive, and focus are contagious and sure to inspire you to find your inner superstar. For the Avid Traveler… Have you climbed Mount Kilimanjaro? Been to the Majestic Machu Picchu? Perhaps you’ve just loafed around drinking margaritas on the white sands beaches of Cuba? If travel is your bag, you should check out Little Princes by Conor Grennan. Conor, fresh out of school with little direction, decides that telling the ladies he encounters that he is going to volunteer in an orphanage in Nepal would be a good way to pick up. He has no clue what he is getting into! Despite

his somewhat creepy motivation, Conor quickly warms to the entirely new world awaiting him. The book is rich with charming characters that will capture your heart. It will have even the toughest personalities shedding a few tears and laughing along the journey. It’s a wonderfully inspiring story for the holiday season and suitable for every type of reader. For the Eccentric… Shopping for the black sheep of the family? Someone who bravely dares to be different and bucks the status quo? If so, I have just the book for you.... Of Bees and Mist by Erick Setiawan. The tale is lush with the supernatural and rich with images for wild imaginations. Meridia, one of three women in this tale, experiences a lonesome childhood and is anxious to start a new life on her own with her love, Daniel. Meridia’s life quickly becomes something unrecognizable to that which she had envisioned as her mother-in-law reveals her true nature. Quickly the atmosphere turns electric with hidden secrets, witchcraft and demons, and shifting alliances. The imaginative reader will find this a memorable read and hard to rival in terms of originality. For the Hopeless Romantic… For those ladies (and perhaps the rare gentlemen) who thrive on sappy movies and dream of being whisked off their feet in a whirlwind romance, the choice seems obvious – a romance novel. Romance novels come in all flavours and are readily available but no Harlequins please!!! So why not try one that is a little off-beat? For those sappy friends on your list, I recommend Hothouse Flower & the Nine Plants of Desire by Margot Berwin. This romantic adventure story centers on Lila Nova. Lila’s life, in the midst of a heart-breaking divorce, becomes up-ended when she meets David Exley, an exotic plant seller. Lila becomes entranced in a psychedelic world of rare plants that promise fame, fortune, immortality, and last but not least - passion! Lila finds herself on a journey of a love and self-discovery in far away lands. You’ll be sure to become wrapped up in this wild adventure in no time at all. For those that I missed... If I didn’t manage to get to that special personality type that you’re shopping for, feel free to post on the Localiez facebook page for personalized recommendations. Be sure to read some great books by the fire as you enjoy your holiday season. Cheers! Stayed tuned for the next issue revealing more exciting reads from Simon & Schuster including some spring release previews!

utumn is a time of changing colours and falling leaves. It also marks the beginning of the holiday season. However, sometimes during this time of change, it is difficult to find time for yourself. The Nectar of Niagara Treatment Package by Total Skin and Body helped me unwind and indulge in a much needed escape. Total Skin

and Body is an established Salon and Spa that has been situated in Milton’s downtown core for over 20 years. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by the owner, Jill. Without delay, I was whisked away to the downstairs haven. I was led into one of the many treatment rooms where Jill discussed the body wrap and facial with me. In the steam room, I was immersed into a world of tranquility infused with the

spectacular facial that had a unique fruit enzyme process to naturally nourish my skin. By design, it also stimulated my skin cells. This intensive lifting and firming treatment was the perfect choice to restructure, replenish and rejuvenate my skin. Thank You Total Skin and Body for the remarkable experience. alternative therapies Does your dog just “think” it’s working?

O

ver the last year, we have started taking our dogs to see a chiropractor on a regular basis. They lead active lives, compete in performance sports such as Frisbee and they need to maintain proper alignment to feel their best. After and before a competition, they go in to see their chiropractor and it’s evident by their excitement to see her that they love what she does. Our interest in chiropractic and acupuncture for dogs started four years ago, when our young dog, Dizzy, tore her caudal ligament, required surgery and bed rest to heal. While some people may have stopped there, but for us her recovery also involved an underwater treadmill, chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture. The underwater treadmill was to help build muscle without putting weight on the joint, the acupuncture helped with pain and the chiropractic adjustments made sure that the rest of her body was not suffering due to her favoring her injured leg. Many people scoffed at these extensive efforts. However, before and after treatments, our dog’s mobility and ease of movement was like night and day. That’s the beauty of dogs, they don’t lie.

To me, it’s amazing when you see these therapies in action on animals. They are not going to fake feeling better or feel better because they think they should. They feel better only when they actually do. Since that experience with Dizzy where we were able to see direct results from these therapies, we’ve had no questions that alternative therapies work. Dizzy was never told she would feel better after the treatments, she just did. Now that we’ve made this part of ours dog’s regular care regime not only do the dogs feel better, but we have piece of mind, we are able to catch potential problems before they do more damage and we know the dogs are truly in the best condition they can be in – whether it be for a long hike in the forest or a Frisbee competition.

When we took her for her first chiropractic adjustment, she wiggled happily into this new person’s arms. That morning, I had noticed some limping on her morning stroll. I was really concerned and was happy to be with someone who may be able to help. Dizzy licked the Chiropractor’s face while she did adjustments. After she was done, Dizzy stretched out, shook off and took her first few steps that day without a limp. The chiropractor said she’d just been out of alignment from laying in the crate and her leg was still healing just fine. It was a big relief to not only me, but Dizzy who gave the Chiropractor several thank you kisses and was on her way.

www.localiez.com

Once she was well enough to begin more therapies we started acupuncture and chiropractic. So here is this extremely busy, five month old Australian Shepherd on a harness and strict orders of no strenuous exercise. We arrive at the Holistic Vet’s for her first acupuncture treatment with her spinning at the end of her leash with excitement because she’s finally out of her crate. At this point, I am imagining Dizzy running down the hallways bouncing off the wall resembling something like a pin-cushion. In my mind, there was no way she would stay still. We got into the treatment room and Dizzy just needed to sit for the first few needles that were inserted into areas to create calmness. Sure enough, busy Dizzy relaxed like someone had slipped her something in the lobby. I watched in awe as Dizzy lay on her side while the vet inserted the needles and waited, then removed them. She never once moved. I have no idea what

she thought was going on, but there was no question it worked. She was not only more relaxed, but she got up and stretched out and her freedom of movement in her injured leg was obviously better.

| localiez |

In human practice, the benefits from alternative therapies can sometimes get blamed on “the placebo effect”. The placebo effect has been shown in many studies where people who think they are being a treatment that will help their ailment, often feel better just by the power of suggestion. In dogs, you can’t tell them that an acupuncture treatment will make them feel better. The treatment either does or it doesn’t. Our first sign that some of these therapies helped was very early on in Dizzy’s recovery. The vet had forbidden any homeopathic treatments. We, being stubborn believers, snuck them into the hospital in the days after her surgery in her food – as they had agreed to let us bring her raw food. It’s the best way to administer homeopathic, but it would have to do, since they were being so closed minded about it. We snuck her homeopathic remedies that helped with inflammation, one of helping repair tissue, one for reducing the affects of the anesthetic and some for reducing stress. Sure enough to the Vet’s astonishment Dizzy was feeling better in remarkable time and on her first check up a week later Dizzy’s progress astounded him. We knew why. Dizzy didn’t know why, but she sure felt better.

holiday gift ideas for him and her

I

t’s that time of year again when each of us needs to find time to get our holiday shopping done. Whether you have already started or you are a last minute shopper, these holiday gift ideas are great for that special someone who has everything!

For Her First and foremost, get her a gift that she will enjoy. This means that unless she has requested a household goodie, don’t get her one as her main gift! The exception to the rule? If your lady loves her hot bevvies, consider picking up a Tassimo or Keurig coffee maker. Not only will she be able to have a guilt-free specialty drink each day, but she will also benefit from saving time and money! Below are 5 other holiday gifts that are sure to impress her. 1. African dwarf frogs. These hassle-free cuties will provide hours of entertainment and require no more attention than a gold fish. The frogs generally come in pairs in a “mini ecosystem”. The aquarium itself is just a little larger than a short 3-wick candle. The friendly frogs are a perfect addition to a small shelf or a desk to help her pass time during slow days at work. 2. Despite the inability for many women to admit that they actually need winding down time to relax, they do! Set up a day of pampering at a swanky spa to put a much needed pep back in her step. If you really want to earn bonus points, arrange for a friend she doesn’t get to see very often to join her as an extra surprise!

3. Sexy lingerie can make any woman feel sexxxy! The time where men cower away from “women’s stores” is a thing of the past. Do some research to find out her current bra and underwear size and go nuts! This gives you the chance to pick up something that she may not splurge on for herself. Not to mention that if you pair her saucy surprise with a tub of edible massage oil or chocolate paint, you too are in for quite a treat!

4. iPhones & androids all around! Does your lady insist that she doesn’t need a new phone because her 90s style flip phone “is working just fine”? If so, you may need to use this holiday season to bring her up to technological speed. She may not need a data plan for her day-to-day communication, but surely once she has the internet at her fingertips, you will not hear a complaint! Don’t forget to pick her up a pair of touch screen capable winter gloves to ensure she stays warm while she plays this winter. 5. Jewelry! ‘Nuff said! There are few women out there that will be upset with an addition to her jewelry collection. However, gentlemen, as well as being wary of overspending, please ensure any diamonds come with paper work stating they are conflictfree!

For Him Ladies, although it is tempting, this time of year is not for revamping your guy’s wardrobe. I know that it hurts, but you will have to deal with the crinkled, ratty, white tees for a little longer. Think outside the box during this holiday season. The following 5 ideas are sure to impress your guy and leave him looking for special ways to say thank you (wink, wink).

Imad Qahwash July/August Issue Localiez Magazine

1. Gadgets that keep him wondering. For many men, the holiday season means an overload of family time, likely your family and his own. Find him something to keep him occupied during your family’s gibbering rather than playing games on his Smartphone. Check out “Aaron’s Super Magnetic Thinking Putty”. This is sure to have all the men trying to figure out how magnetic poles make this stuff work. 2. Is your guy a sports buff ? If so, arrange to send him to a game with his best friend. Hopefully you like his best friend, because to be the ultimate girlfriend plan for him and his buddy to stay over after the game so they are able to either celebrate the win at a local bar or drink away the sad loss. If he is a football fan you must pass some money along to his buddy to cover his beer and food during the day long tailgate. Check out a Bills game for one of the greatest tailgating experiences around! 3. Plan an extreme outing with your guy. Look for something fun and exhilarating that will catch your guy’s interest, like skydiving or flying lessons. Afraid of heights? What about planning an afternoon at the gun range? Think outside the box with this one. You two will never forget that rush that you got from sharing the wild experience, and why not be the amazing girlfriend that helps him lose his virginity to a new extreme sport?

Until next time…Your girl, Alexis

5. Photography extraordinaire? All too often we take thousands of great pictures then forget about them and leave them to sit on a memory card. Help your guy out by bringing some of his masterpieces to life. Use your artistic side (or ask a friend to help if needed) and help your guy decorate his place with memories that don’t scream “Hallmark” or “relationship shrine”. If time permits, take a stroll together beforehand and take some great candid pictures to use in your artwork.

4. If your guy enjoys his top shelf liquor, now is the time to spoil him. Do your research and find out about his favourite scotch or brandy. This is also your chance to show him that you listen when he goes on his rants about the quality that comes from finely aging the alcohol in the appropriate cask. Complete this gift with a set of two nice glasses so the two of you can enjoy the posh treat.

ebecca Black, Epic Meal Time, and Justin Bieber. What do these three have in common? Youtube, and millions of views which helped them launch their careers. The term ‘going viral’ is now a common expression that pertains to internet videos receiving overnight popularity.

According to Aaron Brindle, a Youtube representative, the top five Youtube channels have the same audience as the top five cable networks. “Movie premiers and interviews with the US President were once events for the red carpet or prime time television. But the landscape is shifting,” said Brindle. “Youtube is shifting how we consume media.” It’s also changing the way we connect with each other. Videos of laughing babies and silly animals are dominating the world wide web. The now infamous video of baby Rachel who stops crying only at the sound of Notorious B.I.G hit the net, and in less than a week had 1.6 million hits. “I’m looking at this video around the world. I’m going on Google Japan and I’m typing in ‘Notorious B.I.G and seeing it show up in

Japan is crazy,” said David, baby Rachel’s father. Videos like this connect not only everyday people, but celebrities and professional athletes, making that veil between the elusive world of the famous and the world of the everyday person thinner and thinner. “The things that made this video really go crazy in the last couple of days is that LeBron James tweeted it, and Justin Bieber tweeted it,” explained David. “I think it’s interesting that he paid attention to something like this because that’s how he became popular.” Launching the career of someone like Justin Bieber is not an uncommon story. Youtube has also helped aspiring actors, musicians, directors, and others put their work out there to show the world what they can do. “The media landscape is shifting and broadening, to accommodate a much larger talent pool,” said Brindle. The cost of entry is virtually zero meaning amateur film makers, musicians comedians can try their hand at turning their passions to professions through Youtube.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7_0SOTQLIQ&sns=fb
