Welcome

A warm welcome at the FUB. First lecture: FUB =Free University of Bozen – Bolzano / Freie Universität Bozen. But what is LUB? As we are trilingual, some languages need special treatment. In this case it is Italian and it means Libera Università di Bolzano. You will notice soon that this university is a melting pot of languages. But don’t worry; soon you will also speak the common language here: DITENGLISCH ;-). In order to help you survive the first weeks and months in the “Jungle” of the FUB, the Student Speakers created this new issue of the “Chaospilot”. This booklet for rookies gives you all the necessary information you need. As the name already tells, “Chaospilot” means that we would like to guide you through these first – probably chaotic – days. Beginning with your student card and password you receive on the first day – the official things – right up to how to hunt your food in the mensa (Canteen would be the appropriate English word but in DITENGLISCH mensa is correct)– the really important things. It may be hard at first to figure out what kind of Associations and Services the University offers and what their functions are. We want to give you an overview on the purpose and activity each Association and Service pursues and present it in a simple way. However, an important restriction: this Chaospilot is only a supplement to the official information provided by the university, for example the study manifestos of every course.

Due to the fact that this university is very young and in a continuous process of growth, some given information might be valid only for a few months, for example room numbers could be changed. The same goes for the information about the student portal, which is being redesigned currently. You can also find important news regarding students on our website, www.speakers.bz, such as the annotated version of the Student Charta which covers the rights but also the duties for a good relation between students, professors and administration. At the end of the Chaospilot we provide important facts about your specific faculties. Most of the booklet is in English as it is the common language at the sites of Bolzano and Brunico. Infos fßr Brixen gibt’s auf Deutsch. Per Bressanone ci sono anche le informazioni in Italiano.

We know that the Chaospilot is not able to cover all topics but: We hope this will help you. And if any question remains: JUST ASK! FRAG EINFACH! CHIEDI PURE!

Maximilian Schnabel Student Speaker and Chaospilot responsible

Factsheet

Student card Your student card is the key to many services that you will need almost every day. The card is handed out when you enroll. You can use it for the following: • to pay for food and drinks in the Mensa, Unibar (only Bolzano) and at vending machines at Bolzano and Bressanone • to borrow and return books from the library • to make photocopies and prints • to enter the university buildings from the back entrance of the buildings C and F (in Bolzano) • to access rooms reserved for your faculty

The card is also proof of identity!!! In most faculties you have to bring it to exams. It’s valid only for one semester and has to be renewed after the payment of the study fees. The machines to renew the card are located in the library and the student secretariat. The machines to recharge the card with cash can be found in Bolzano on the left of the Mensa entrance, in Bressanone next to the reception desk and in Brunico in the entrance hall.

Lost your student card? In order to prevent other people from using it, you should lock the card immediately. This can be done online in the Intranet area under Report Card Payment/Lock Card. A new card costs 20 € and needs to be requested at the Student Secretariat.

Computer Rooms / e-mail / account / WLAN In Bolzano you can find the computers in the library. In Bressanone you can find computers in the library and also in the Missionshaus, but we wouldn’t recommend using them. The computers in the PC room on the third floor are faster, trust us. You receive your login information (username, password) from the student secretariat at the time you enroll. At your first login you have to change the password. With this account you are able to use university computers, access your university e-mails and use Intranet services and the wireless network (WLAN). E-mail inbox and intranet services can also be accessed outside the university. E-mail (OutlookWebAccess): https://webmail.unibz.it Intranet area: Homepage, Students, ICT Services

On the university computers you can also access e-mails by using Outlook, which is already configured. You can store in your online email account up to 100 MB. Once you reach an amount of 80 MB, you’ll be informed via e-mail that you have to delete something. Note that also e-mails in the folders “Sent ltems” and “Deleted Items” are counting. Be warned that you’ll be receiving a lot of e-mails from the university (some useful, some not so much) – especially those with big attachments can stuff your inbox pretty quickly! Also, if you don’t want to miss anything, be sure to check your e-mails regularly. Very important information (regarding exams for example) will be communicated by the administration, faculty and professors via this channel.

7

If you get an email complaining that your “Storage Quota” is 112% of the available space, the problem is not the emails. You have to decrease your used space by deleting files because you have saved/ stored too much data on the network location, so on the “computer” itself. You have to go to Start -> Computer -> students (E:) and navigate to your name to delete some files there.

For any kind of trouble you should contact the I&CT by writing a ticket. This can be done at: https://support.unibz.it. Note that this is the preferred way to contact the I&CT department. Once you “open” a ticket, you’ll be able to track its process and see the person’s name working on it. When the problem is solved, you may also rate the staff’s work.

For printing in the University you choose the printer “CPS Generic Postscript”, now the document is available for printing at all printers in the university buildings. Just go to a printer of your choice and put your student card onto the nearby card reader. Once you have presented your card, you can see all your documents ready for printing. Choose one and it will get printed.

If you are also using a personal notebook at the university: you can establish a connection to access the wireless network (Scientific Network South Tyrol) more or less in all parts of the building. It will allow you to connect to printers, your files on the server and surf the web. There are also detailed manuals which illustrate how to setup the WLAN etc. They can be found at the website of the I&CT department (www.unibz.it/ict ).

Intranet Services Some essential services for students can be accessed from the university website (Homepage, Students, ICT Services). There you can enroll to exams, plan your studies e.g. select optional courses and create an individual timetable. The enrolment for exams on time is a condition in order to be allowed to sit the exam. The enrollment period starts a few weeks before the first exam. The deadline is different across faculties, but your Faculty Secretariat will let you know the necessary things in time. You will always receive an automatic e-mail from the student secretariat with the confirmation of enrolment. In the Study Career you can find all exams on your degree course, the grades of already passed exams and even your grade point average. The timetable of your lectures can be found on the website of your faculty. Additionally, an individual timetable is provided that can be personalized based on individual preferences and needs.

Reserve Collections On the website of the Library you can find the link to the Reserve Collection. This Reserve Collection is used by many professors and lecturers to publish their teaching related material, e.g. slides, handouts, homework, student grades, and text books.

Mensa The Unimensa (by the way, the British term for it would be canteen, but as some words differ in British English, American English and Opening hours: Australian English, “Bolzanian English” is no exception) has three different price categoBolzano, Mo-Fr 11:45 – 14:00 ries for students: the small, the Sa 12:00 – 14:00 medium and the full menu. Mo-Fr 18:30 – 20:30 You may ask, how it is so cheap? Well, one of the advantages of Bressanone,Mo-Sa 12:00 – 14:00 studying in South Tyrol is that Fr 18:00 – 19:45 the Autonomous Province of Bolzano is very generous and pays part of your food expenses Brunico, Mo-Fr 11:30 – 13:30 in the Unimensa, depending on your choice of menu. You are only allowed to pay with your student card and not in cash. An exception is the canteen of Brunico. There you can only pay in cash. A microwave is provided should you want to heat up your food. The Unibar in Bolzano accepts both cash payment and Student Card (with a 20% discount!). Detailed information on the menu and the prices can be found at the bottom of the following website: http://www.unibz.it/en/students/life/accommodation/default.html

Foreigners Specific information for students not from Italy is provided by the Advisory Service. In Bolzano you’ll find many brochures at the Info Point but also in front of it; in Bressanone you can find them in their office. In any case, you can always contact them directly.

Remember that you are allowed to pay for only two meals a day with your student card! From the third on you will be charged the full price (without the Province’s subsidy). So if you want to offer a lunch to a friend of yours, you may be better off having dinner somewhere else.

11

• the Social Club is a place where you can meet friends. It can be found in Bolzano in the F-Building on the 6th floor. Check out the terrace with its wonderful view over the city. On this floor there are also the offices of the student representatives and the student associations such as kikero, S.C.U.B., and the Alumni Club. Another office which is used for student projects (ex. Flyer, Aiesec, Uniparty) is quite close: C4.04. In Bressanone you find the office of the student representatives, S.C.U.B and Kikero on the 2nd floor (2.12)

• on the black notice-boards of the university you can find job and housing offers, but also via the university website there exists a blog for accommodation offers (http://accommodationunibz.blogspot.com) or you can use www.housinganywhere.com

• the library reminds you via E-mail or SMS one day before you have to return a book (for SMS you have to activate the service in the student portal)

• printers, copy machines, CD writers, scanners are available in the Library and in Brunico also in the “Students’ Study Area”, in Bressanone in the lounge on the second floor and in Bolzano in the corridors spread over the university building

• in the Intranet area of the university website you will find a list of all your purchases made with your Student Card (-> “Report Card Payment”)

Things to know

13

• lockers in the library are without charge and you can get the keys at the Library Information desk. They can be rented only for one day. There are also lockers outside the library, in the A- and E-Building that can be rented for one semester (Bolzano). The price is 10 Euro per semester.

• books from the library can be borrowed and returned either by using the self-check machine or directly talk to the librarian. Just follow the instructions on the display. Late returns are fined (make it your habit to return books before the last day, 7 p.m.). With the online catalogue (OPAC) you have the possibility to search for all media, check their status and read their description. If too many search results are returned you should use the advanced search function

• if the PC or printer is not working, the toner is finished or no paper is available. Inform the corresponding department via https://support.unibz.it

• lost something? Ask in Bressanone and Brunico the technical service (maintenance) and in Bolzano the doorman at the entrance

• at the end of each course there is an evaluation of the professor: this is very important, please take it seriously! These evaluations results, among other things, determine if the contract of the professor gets renewed or not

• to put a classified advertisement on the notice-board, the doorman first has to stamp it

• press cuttings and Uni-news appear on the university homepage

• never forget to enroll to exams on time!

• professors are also human and most of them are quite happy to receive some feedback presented in a respectful way. Don’t hesitate to ask for things that might assist you in your learning process!

• as we are a small university, most professors are open to discussing problems via e-mail or also to meet outside of regular lectures or office hours

• all teaching staff has “Office Hours” where you can get further explanation or feedback for your homework. Use the office hours for questions or clarifications, especially when the course language is not your mother tongue. The more prepared you are (e.g. with a catalogue of questions) the more effective the result will be. Don’t be shy: Only those who don’t ask, don’t know! Some professors, especially in Bressanone, might prefer to arrange a date and time before hand via e-mail

Tips from students for students

• studying is not always that easy. At a certain time you might find yourself in a crisis and you might feel like talking to a professional. Coaching can support students in difficult situations so that students get successfully through their studies. Don’t worry and make an appointment with the psychologist Nadia Resch (ps@asus.sh). The appointments are free of charge for students

• throughout the whole year, service offices like the Library, the Career Advisory Service or also Kikero offer a wide variety of seminars, trainings sessions or other events that might contribute to your academic but also general education

• exchange programs give you the opportunity to study abroad

• a student job, also known as 150 hour job, is your possibility to work up to 150 hours in different areas of the university’s administration. The payment is 8 Euro per hour. Unfortunately this possibility works currently for Bachelor students only from second year

• it’s always good to check the timetable on a regular basis because there might be some changes

Bike It’s the most efficient and fastest way to move from one place to another. If you don’t have a bike and still would like to cycle around you can also rent one. They can be rented between April and October at a price of 1 Euro for six hours or 3 Euro for a whole day (deposit 10 Euro). The place to pick them up and return them is Viale della Stazione, which is next to Piazza Walther. Cycling lanes are provided inside as well as outside the city; it’s advisable to use them. Note: your bike must be equipped with a light if you are using it at night.

Car To park in the blue parking slots you have to pay. The white ones are reserved for people living in that area. You can also park in the industrial area. You can apply for a parking permit at the town council office. They are not issued to people living in halls of residence or without a residence permit. Cars should not be left too long unattended. When the street cleaning happens, they remind you only three days before by putting signs on the streets. Cars parked on the street during the cleaning period are towed away and you have to pay around 150 Euro to reclaim them.

Bus Using the orange city buses (SASA) you pay 1.50 € for one ride. The price is the same for the entire city area (there are no zones) except if you are using

Line 2 which goes outside the city. The tickets can be bought on the bus (coins of € .10, .20, .50, 1 and 2). It’s cheaper to buy a ticket for 3 € (Tagesticket Stadtbereich/biglietto giornaliero urbano) if you want to take the bus more than twice a day. You can also buy a Wertkarte/carta valore for 10/25/50 Euro where you pay 12 cents per kilometer. Those tickets can be also used for buses that go outside the city (SAD). Buses that go to ski resorts have ski For further information about equipment holds. SAD:

website for public transport To use the train in the region (outside city) - http://www.sad.it of South Tyrol you can use the same ticket as for the buses (carta valore / Wertkarte) which is cheaper than buying the ticket at the train station. It’s not possible to buy tickets on the train. Also very important: don’t forget to punch the tickets (otherwise they are not valid and you have to pay a fine!).

19

ABO+ The travel pass ABO+ by the province costs 150 € and allows students under the age of 26 to use all buses in South Tyrol, trains between Brenner and Trento and some cable cars for a whole academic year. The intercity trains of Trenitalia or “EC DB/ÖBB” cannot be used with the ABO+. The application form can be filled in at the bus station.

Communication The phone prefix of Italy is +39 (or 0039). To make calls outside Italy you have to dial the prefix of the country you are calling. For example, if you are calling from here to Germany you have to add the prefix 0049. If you call numbers in Italy keep in mind that you need always the prefix of the city/mobile network, even if you are calling numbers in the same city from where you are calling! In South Tyrol there are four prefixes, 0471 is for the areas around and southern of Bolzano, 0472 covers Bressanone and the north, 0473 covers the west area of South Tyrol including Merano and the surrounding areas and 0474 the east part with Brunico.

Mobile phones It’s common to use a prepaid card. The most used providers are Tim, Vodafone, Wind and Tre. All of them have small variations in the price. Have a careful look at the different tariffs of providers and choose one that fits best for you. To recharge your phone credit you don’t have to pay an extra fee. You can do that in some Tabacchi directly or buy a recharging card almost everywhere.

Representation in councils Working groups and active participation in university organization Mediators: Students – Professors – Administration Forwarding your ideas Help & Advice in any way

First of all, we representatives are normal students and have

Student Speakers: who are they?

It doesn’t matter whether it’s about course content, examination dates, the meals provided by the canteen or discrimination of any kind you are facing – we are your advocate for transparency, politician, consultant and partner at the same time. In all the cases above and a lot more, getting in touch with us, the student representatives, is worthwhile.

Are you having any kind of problems with a lecturer or the administration? Do you have suggestions for improvements at the university? You don’t want to accept everything others decide upon?

Student Speakers – once again: what are they good for?

Representation of students? Why shouldn’t I represent myself? In which cases would I need somebody else speaking up for me? We have the administrative and teaching staff to support us – isn’t that enough?! Well, as you might soon find out yourself, theory is one thing, practice is another…

Courses in nine languages Counselling: support for “autonomous” language learners from professional language advise Testing: mandatory exams of the FUB and international language certifications (Cambridge, Autonomous learning: on- and offline learning material available

The Language Centre has a variety of functions for prospective students and students of all degree courses. Although the university is relatively small we offer courses in nine languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Ladin, Russian, and Spanish). Our optional language courses try to cover all levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (from beginners’ level to A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 which is near-native-speaker level). We offer our courses throughout the whole academic year. The summer intensive courses are of particular importance because it is the season for pre-enrolment and the selection of new students. During the summer courses the prospective students become familiar with their new environment and get a good idea of what studying in three languages really means. Therefore, every prospective student and every freshman and –woman should take a few points into account:

Language Centre

chlernberater LI, TestDaF)

Language learning is a highly individualized cognitive process and there is a whole variety of types of learners and learning-styles. This is the reason why the Language Centre also offers a language counselling service. Try it out!

The language requirements of the Free University of Bolzano have a well-defined function and that is to provide students with the necessary language skills in order to be able to attend and understand lectures in all three languages. A B2 in two languages is not an end in itself but the starting point for the understanding of academic discourse (spoken and written). Getting to this level of competence requires a lot of work in class and at home. In other words: you will need from 500 to 600 hours of work in order to get from a beginners’ level to B2! Therefore our basic advice is to start as soon as possible to learn and improve all three languages of our university and this especially applies to beginners in German, Italian or English.

Your Student Card is pretty flexible, and one of the things it does is double up as your Library Card.

And now some more questions that we can answer for you: So how do I use the Library?

Well, we have one huge advantage over Google- the Library has people: we have our hardworking, expert librarians behind the scenes who do all the precision work so that you can use all our services. They purchase, organize, inform, mediate… they are friendly and most importantly, they have a face. And they certainly won’t leave you to drown in 65,600,000 search results!

We are a library in the 21st century, which means we can hear you asking the following question: so what’s the point of a library now that there’s the internet and basically everything anyone needs to know can be found by inserting a couple of words into Google?

And of course, if you’ve got any more questions, come in and have a chat or send us an email. Who needs Google?

And how do I return the stuff I’ve borrowed? You can return your items to any of the three libraries in Bolzano, Bressanone or Brunico. In Bressanone and Bolzano you can use the Self Check in the Library or you can go to the librarian at the desk, who will check them back in for you. And if the Library’s closed, or you don’t want to go in, outside the building there is the Book Drop (in Bolzano, Bressanone and Brunico) where you can put your items 24/7.

So how can I borrow stuff? To borrow media you need your Student Card. In Bolzano and Bressanone you can use the Self -Check to take out books on your own. In Brunico you can borrow books from the University Library that’s in the same building as the Town Library. You can borrow up to 40 items (books, journals, DVDs, …) at the same time.

An important aim that the Free University of Bozen/ Bolzano takes very seriously is to encourage students to make contacts with the world of work; first and foremost through teaching, which doesn’t just concentrate on theory: as well as lectures there are also seminars, work placement programmes and practical work that allow students to put their skills into practice. What is also important is the experience that students gain through undertaking work placements, which can be both compulsory and optional depending on the degree course.

Faculty of Design and Arts FACULTY AND FACULTY SECRETARIAT

The faculty is located in the C and F sections of the SER building. All the workshops (Carpentry, plastic, modeling, photography and video, printing, book binding, metalworks and free workspaces) have recently moved into the -1 and -2 floor of the F section. They are open from 9.00 - 12.00 and 13.00 - 17.00 Monday to Friday. The material office is situated in C2.05 . It is open only from Monday to Wednesday. To be allowed to use the workshops you have to attend workshop courses, which are held during the semester breaks (and WUP).

All workshops as well as the MacPool, Print Shop (C 3.01) and the CAD Pool (C section 1st floor) can only be entered with your Student Card.

LECTURE ROOMS

All lectures are held in the C and F section. RESOURCES

Additionally to the Reserve Collection, do not forget to visit the faculty homepage http://www.unibz.it/design-art/). The faculty blog (http://www.freeunibz.net ) is a valuable source for local events, free rooms and flats as well

as news of the design world. We encourage all design students to contribute to freeunibz. Within the university building you can access the file exchange and your project folder which are used to distribute data between students and professors.

School of Economics and Management First of all the Faculty Administration and we student representatives are always available for all matters concerning the School in particular. For related issues in the library you can ask our subject specialist who is currently J端rgen Kirchler. FACULTY ADMINISTRATION

E-Building, 4th floor on the left side PC POOLS

We have an own pc room just for our faculty, also with special software installed (like SPSS) that might become useful during your studies. You find this room A5.18 on the 5th floor of building A, but you can only use it when there are no other classes at the same time. OPTIONAL COURSES

Please decide at the beginning of each academic year which optional courses you are going to take - otherwise it might happen that some get deactivated due to a too low number of interested students. For your optional courses, there are several possibilities: First of all you can add courses from the other undergraduate programmes at our school (but only if they are not

53

already in your study plan!). Additionally the School organizes a so called “summer school” (each week in the summer another course worth 2.5 credit points). This is also a popular way of doing an optional outside of the regular study time. Furthermore it is also possible to take courses from other faculties or even other universities - for both get in contact with the Faculty Administration early. EXAMS

You are allowed to sit the same exam a maximum of two times per academic year (the enrollment to the exam counts). Always bring your student card as identification to the exam and keep in mind that any kind of copying and plagiarism will be penalized in the appropriate way – no jokes about that! You can ask for copies of your exams which you will receive then via e-mail as pdf files. The administration will inform you when and how the request can be made. BRUNICO

Please remember the advantages of keeping up with an average of 30 credit points per semester (e.g. for competitions) on the other hand you won’t please anyone if you ask too much of yourself.

First we want to inform all you that we student representatives in Brunico will always be at your disposal if you need us or if you have some problems concerning the university. PC POOLS

We do not have any pc room in Brunico, but every floor has at least one pc. There are also no problems printing or photocopying something

and the prices for doing it are very economic. Anyway, almost everybody has got laptops and we do have a multimedia room where you can sit with your laptop and use the wireless LAN connection of the university.

PROFESSOREN | I PROFESSORI

Die meisten Professoren haben ihre Arbeitszimmer im 3. Stock.

The computer room, where you will usually do your exercises for several courses, is the E2.31 and it is at your disposal if there are no classes. On the computers special software is installed, like “Inventor” (Autodesk product for computer industrial design). If the computer room is occupied you can use the computer room A5.18 (obviously if not busy with classes). EXAMS

Enrollment for exams must be done through the webpage of the Free University of Bolzano (http:// www.unibz.it). For this you can use either an external computer or the computers at the university. On the right side of the homepage in the ICT-Services section please click on the menu “… for students”, and you will see a list of possible useful services such as: Webmail OWA, Student Portal, Enrollment for courses, Reserve Collection, … choose the “Student Portal” and then proceed and enter your "User name" and your personal password. Once you are on the students’ page, click on „Enrolment for courses“ on the left hand side, and you will be able to view the exams for which you can enroll. You are allowed to sit the same exam a maximum of two times per academic year (the enrollment to the exam counts). Always bring your student card as identification to the exam and keep in mind that any kind of

copying and plagiarism will be penalized in the appropriate way – no jokes about that! All the instructions for the enrollment to the exams are provided by the faculty which sends you an email containing all the useful information. Please note: you must enroll at least 5 working days before the exam date and any change to your enrollment must be done within this time!! The enrollment or un-cancellation procedure can be considered concluded only if you have received this confirmation e-mail. OPTIONAL COURSES

Please decide at the beginning of each academic year which optional courses you are going to take – otherwise it might happen that some get deactivated due to a too low number of interested students. You can choose the optional courses you would like to attend by choosing them on the Student Portal were they will be visible during the “enrollment window” that will be communicated by the Faculty Administration. Attention! To enroll to the exam the optional must figure in your studyplan. These courses will not be offered every year, therefore you have to do the exam within the academic year. Additionally the Faculty organizes "summer schools" at the end of July. This is also a popular way of doing an optional outside of the regular study time. Furthermore it is also possible to take courses from other faculties or even other universities – for both get in contact with the Faculty Administration early.
