introduction
At the SECC we recognise our responsibilities in promoting best practice amongst clients, contractors, staff and suppliers when it comes to environmental issues and protecting the environment. We therefore consult with our business partners, government agencies and industry associations to develop and adopt more environmentally friendly policies. As a minimum, the SECC will comply, whilst aiming to surpass, the relevant legal requirements with the objective of gaining formal accreditation.
As the UK’s largest integrated exhibition and conference centre, as well as Scotland’s largest indoor entertainment venue this document discusses ways in which we are working to make the world a better place for us all to enjoy.

waste
Following the procurement of a baler and minimiser in November 2007, the SECC now has capability to reduce many waste streams which include cans, glass, paper, plastic polythene and wood. Having recently undertaken to recycle event carpeting through one of our many contractors, the SECC has made a significant change to reducing waste to landfill sites.This huge achievement and success story could not have been realised without our cleaning contractor Mitie (www.mitie.co.uk) who has made a huge effort in assisting us with our recycling requirements.

In line with our environmental policy, the SECC has made a commitment to purchase 100% of our electricity at the green rate. This represents a premium price paid to ensure that all the SECC electrical power demands are met from green sources.

Travel
SECC VISITORS We actively promote various modes of public transport which services the venue well. In working with transport providers, promotional schemes are cross marketed via online and where appropriate, in print. SECC STAFF SECC offers all employees the opportunity to buy a bicycle and related cyclist’s safety equipment at a reduced cost through the Company’s cycle to work scheme.
The scheme can be joined even if it is impractical to cycle to work on a daily basis because of excessive journey distances, as the SECC recognises the benefits gained through increased levels of physical activity. Employees participation in the scheme has a number of personal benefits such as reducing costs, improving fitness and general well being and of course, environmental benefits of reducing carbon emissions by avoiding driving to work. SECC is ideally placed on a cycle route adjacent to the River Clyde, which extends to Loch Lomond and beyond for the more adventurous amongst us.

NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE - THE TREES FOR LIFE PROJECT
The SECC is the charity’s largest regular corporate supporter. To date, the SECC has donated over £20,000 to Trees for Life, The SECC is delighted to be sponsoring 39 acres of the supporting the “Trees for Life” Dundreggan estate through conservation charity dedicated events held. Leith’s is the catering partner onsite at the SECC. The Leith’s Herb Garden at the SECC was started one year ago. The idea came from a Leith’s management meeting to discuss new ideas regarding the environment and various things that might interest clients who visit our site.
There are a good range of herbs such as parsley, chives and rosemary which are used as garnishes in the meals prepared in the SECC Restaurants. We hope to add to the range by planting slightly more exotic herbs, once we know they can cope with the Scottish weather.
The SECC has three separate concrete gardens at the back of the Clyde Auditorium. The SECC gardeners planted them in spring and look after them on our behalf.
