Visitors who want to enjoy a season of frolicking in the snow in the Wenatchee River Valley are limited only by their imagination. With an average snowfall of 150 inches in the Leavenworth area, you don’t have to travel far for a day full of winter activities. The many ski resorts, sno-parks, recreational forests and designated private lands provide invigorating challenges to those who enjoy spending a morning, afternoon or evening in the crisp winter air under the backdrop of the majestic Cascade Mountain Range.
Stevens Pass
SKIING
Stevens Pass is located on the crest of the Cascade Range. Stevens receives approximately 450 inches of snow annually, covering 1,125 acres of skiable terrain including 37 major runs, numerous bowls, glades and faces. The ski resort provides a variety of challenges for every age and skill level. Normal hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, conditions permitting. Spring operations begin in mid-March with operating hours changing to 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Three lodges with a host of restaurants offer a break from the cold to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, or tantalize your taste buds with a fare from tacos and pizza to a complete sit down pub. A Nordic skiing area with miles of quiet secluded trails for cross country and snowshoeing are also available at Stevens Pass for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the alpine and snowboard area. Leavenworth Ski Hill
Whether it’s tubing, cross-country skiing on groomed trails, downhill skiing, ski jumping and snowshoeing, the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club provides winter recreation for all ages and abilities. The Lt. Michael Adams Tubing Park and lift is a source of recreation providing fun for the entire family. The ski hill also provides downhill skiing accessible by two rope tows, ski jumping facilities and a historic lodge with food service. The 26 kilometers of beautifully groomed cross-country trails in and around the town of Leavenworth offer a variety of terrain for the beginner to the expert, classic or skate skier. Mission Ridge Ski and Snowboard Resort in Wenatchee is Washington state's most distinctive winter playground for skiing and snowboarding. Starlight Lantern Parade
A prelude to Christkindlmarkt, the Starlight Lantern Parade has gained popularity for the past 15 years. Children and adults can make a lantern at the Festhalle, decorating it however they want. Icefest
A fun day for old and young, Icefest includes an ice cube hunt, snow sculpture contest, dog sledding and sleigh rides. Perhaps the most popular event of Icefest is the “smooshing” contest, in which individuals or teams race each other with 2 by 4 strapped to their feet. Wineries: A Grape Experience Washington’s wine industry is booming with over 500 wineries generating over a half a billion dollars in sales. And while Washington remains second to California in total production, Washington vineyards enjoy an average of two more hours of sunshine per day resulting in a higher production of premium wines. Beyond the dozen wineries operating in the Lake Chelan Valley American Viticulture Area, clusters of wineries can be found in Leavenworth, Oroville and Wenatchee. And the magnificent scenery and four seasons recreation, makes a visit to North Central Washington wine country a truly world class experience. Most of the region’s wineries are small family-run operations. These
smaller wineries produce a few hundred cases annually making the visit to these boutique wineries a truly intimate experience. And there’s plenty more to wine production than what happens at each winery. “Wine is not made – wine is grown,” explains Dr. Bob Jankelson, owner of Tsillan Cellars on Lake Chelan’s south shore. To support the burgeoning wine industry, acres upon acres of what were once fruit orchards have converted to vineyards. The unique combination at each vineyard – amount of daily sunlight, soil composition, slope face and agricultural practices – gives each a unique product that’s reflected in the broad range of wines that keep bringing awards home year after year.
It’s a new face to a region historically known for its apple, pear and tree fruit crops. The region’s fall freezes allow winemakers to produce a sweet, rich, ice wine that few regions can accommodate. So, after a hard day on the slopes, fishing for steelhead or just shopping, drop by one of the local tasting rooms or order a bottle of local wine and sit by a cozy fire. It could just be a perfect end to a perfect day in North Central Washington. WINTERFEST Lake Chelan Winterfest - It’s one of the valley’s most popular winter events and come this January, it becomes two weekends of fun-filled events. The first weekend, January 6-8 will feature ice carving, visitors and residents join in the fun every year to show off their artistic skills, snow stomping for the snow sculptures, snow sculpting, cross country ski lessons, skiing, tubing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The second weekend, Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend January 13-15, will feature sleigh rides, soupfest, ice sculpting, ice lounge, ice sculpture tour, live music, wine walk, snowflake land for kids, snowmobile drag races, Echo-Loppet, artisan alley, fire and ice parade, Polar Bear Splash and fireworks. Businesses stay open later offering specials, and the Torchlight Parade on Saturday, Jan. 14, from downtown Chelan to Don Morse Park leads to a symbolic end to the holiday season with a Christmas tree bonfire on the beach. While the fire is raging, hardy souls dash into the frigid waters of Lake Chelan for the traditional Polar Bear Splash. Call them crazy with heart - Polar Bear participants take pledges and raise money for charity. The evening will be capped off by a fireworks display. At Mill Bay Casino in Manson the Lake Chelan Snowmobile Club will host the 10th annual Wally Peterson Memorial Snowmobile Drag Races and Radar Runs. DOWNHILL SKIING Echo Valley Winter Sports Center is a favorite for snow-filled fun for tourists and locals alike. It’s a unique family location with three available rope tows, a 1,400-foot Poma lift, and a 4-lane tubing hill. Small children can play in the lodge while older siblings ski or go tubing. Located just nine miles from Chelan, Echo Valley offers 70 acres of skiable terrain, and snowboarders are welcome. A wide base area makes it a prime location for instruction. Classes are offered to children as young as 3 years old. Echo Valley operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays, December through late February. Daily lift tickets are $20. A day of tubing including tube rental is $8. Children 5 and under can play for free. If a full day on the slopes sounds like a bit much the center also offers half-day ski passes for $15 and half day tubing passes for $5 starting at 1 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING A series of improvements over the past several years has turned Echo Ridge from a rural crosscountry ski facility into a world-class destination. The system of more than 25 miles of groomed trail consists of
a series of loop routes for all types of cross country skiers, plus over 2.4 miles of trails for snow shoeing. On some trails man’s best friend is allowed, but check with the Ranger District to see when and where your dog can roam. The trails include a 12-mile area that has been groomed to accommodate both skate-skiers and classic skiers. This trail gets special grooming throughout the season. Classic skiers can enjoy the full 24 miles of trails. One of the most popular easy trails is called Lollipop. It provides a spectacular view of more than 180 degrees of vista that includes Pyramid Mountain, Stormy Mountain, the Enchantments and Mount Stuart. The series of loop trails wrap around ridge tops for a constantly changing view in different directions. The Lake Chelan Nordic Ski Club has added a yurt for skiers near the kiosk at the upper ridge trailhead. Children 17 and younger ski free, while adults 18 and older pay $10 per day. A season pass costs $70 and is available at the Ranger

Uplake from Manson and Chelan visitors to the Lake Chelan Valley can find an abundance of outdoor activities in the Holden, Lucerne and Stehekin areas. Access to the northern parts of Lake Chelan is only by boat or airplane. Adventurous cross-country skiers can find some excellent backcountry skiing in the Railroad Creek drainage out of Lucerne and Holden. Holden Village takes overnight visitors, and reservations can be made by writing to Holden Village, HCOO - Stop 2, Chelan, WA 98816 or by visiting their Website at www.holdenvillage.org to reserve your space online. The Stehekin Valley, known as a place to “get away from it all,” is a narrow and remote valley at the far end of Lake Chelan. The village of

Stehekin cannot be accessed by car, and cell phones and televisions don’t work there. Getting there is as simple as taking the ferry or float plane from Chelan. The Lake Chelan Boat Company operates the Lady of the Lake, a boat service to uplake destinations from Chelan. SNOWMOBILING Lake Chelan has been recognized as the best snowmobiling area in the state and one of the top 15 in the western U.S. by SnoWest magazine. The U.S. Forest Service maintains 170 miles of groomed trails - mainly Forest Service roads - in three major valleys. The areas have become so popular that the Forest Service recently intensified its grooming regimen. Snowmobilers access the trails from six local sno-parks: the Entiat Valley, 25 Mile Creek on the south shore of Lake Chelan, Antilon Lake and Echo Valley on the north shore, and Black Canyon and Gold Creek in the Methow Valley.
At Antilon Lake, a trail system spanning 100 miles, facilities are available along the trails. There are also snow shelters and scenic view points throughout. At Echo Ridge, just 10 miles west of Chelan, find 100 miles of trails spanning to 2,640 feet in elevation; sanitary facilities are available. South of Chelan at 25 Mile Creek riders have 63 miles worth of trails to ride reaching 2,000 feet in elevation. The Entiat River system includes 63 miles of trails with sanitary facilities, shelter and scenic view points. At the South Fork Gold Creek trail system in the Methow Valley riders have 100 miles to enjoy reaching an elevation of 2,140 feet. Sanitary facilities and snow shelters are available at the site. At the Black Canyon trail system riders can enjoy 100 miles of trails reaching an elevation of 1,360 feet. Sanitary facilities are available. Passes are required to use the sno-parks during the winter months. They are available at the Chelan Ranger District 509-682-4900 and the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce 800-4CHELAN. Over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in Manson the Lake Chelan Snowmobiling Club hosts its Wally Peterson Memorial Drag Races. The Okanogan Valley also offers downhill and cross-country skiing on both sides of the border, as well as opportunities for snowmobiling and snowshoeing under sunny skies. There is a dogsled race and outhouse races held in Conconully each year.
CROSS COUNTRY & DOWNHILL SKIING
For those who enjoy downhill skiing or snowboarding, Loup Loup Ski Bowl has both. Loup Loup has a rope tow, a Poma lift and a quad chair accessing 10 runs that cover 1,240 vertical feet. The season typically runs from mid-December to April 1. The slopes are open Wednesday, Friday and weekends, and every day during Christmas break. Children’s programs, ski and snowboarding lessons and a service rental shop round out the services at Loup Loup. The day lodge is complete with a cafeteria and a spacious view of the mountain base. A new administration building with new bathrooms was completed last December.

SNOWMOBILING
For a modern-day adventure, try snowmobiling on 400 miles of groomed trails in the Methow. The trails are completely separate from the Nordic trails, and there are several trail heads and sno-parks in the valley. Bring your own sled or rent one, along with all the accessories you’ll need. Call (509) 9962497 for information. Pateros is at the entrance to the Methow Valley where two nearby snoparks, Black Canyon and Gold Creek, provide access to hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails. The Town of Conconully is one of the few in the state that allows snowmobiling right into town. So after a fun day of riding your snow machine on miles and miles of snow you can ride right into town for food and refreshment or to spend the night in one of the town’s many resorts and lodges.
