BIRDS OF PREY THAT DOMINATE THE SKIES

Afew months ago, the Kentucky Medical Association received some promising health news.

The Commonwealth – long one of the nation’s poorest-performing states on health benchmarks such as obesity, diabetes and respiratory disease – had

made a big jump in the number of its residents seeking lung health screenings, lifting Kentucky to where it now ranks second in the nation.

The news, said Pat Padgett, CEO of the Kentucky Medical Association, offered encouraging evidence that public health initiatives aimed at get-

ting quality information into the hands of Kentuckians could have a sizeable impact on improving their health habits and quality of life.

And a lot of the success of Kentucky’s improved ranking, Padgett said, could be credited to KET, which had produced Fighting to Breathe:

Lung Disease in Kentucky, a threepart health series from 2022 that sought to raise awareness on lung health issues, such as cancer screenings, radon testing and mitigation, and smoking and vaping prevention.

“KET played an extraordinary role in getting that message out to the people of the Commonwealth,” Padgett said. “The greatest challenge in getting information out to the public is that there are so many different outlets that people use for information. But thankfully we have KET, which I think is one of the best resources Kentuckians have for learning how they can maintain and improve their health.”

Everybody in Kentucky, he added, has access to KET, both over the airwaves and online. And having a trusted source for health information, he said, is key for communities to address some of the larger health issues that might hinder a region’s quality of life.

As an example, he pointed to the strides Kentucky has made in reducing its number of smokers.

“We as a state have come a long way,” Padgett said. “We still have too many smokers, but far fewer people today smoke than they did 30 years ago. And I think that’s because of the work of organizations like KET, that have put in a lot of time

and effort to educate people about making health choices today that will have a great impact on your health tomorrow.”

KET’s health-related programming, such as Kentucky Health and KET Forums, runs the gamut, covering a wide variety of healthcare issues facing Kentuckians and provides the latest information on advancements in treatment and science, which in turn help people make more informed decisions, he said.

“Many of the health conditions that Kentucky unfortunately is a leader in, such as obesity, smoking and others, are largely attributable to lifestyle,” he said. “But whether you’re in your 20s, 50s or 60s, you can make lifestyle choices that really impact whether you will age well. And KET does a great job of providing the resources that tell people it’s never too late. You can make the changes that will help you enjoy the aging process.”

KET has launched a new initiative focused on the issues facing Kentucky’s aging population and their loved ones (see page 22). Additionally, KET’s three-part series Fighting to Breathe: Lung Disease in Kentucky may be viewed at KET.org/LungHealth.

TODAY’S KET

After raising families and working for many years, we’d like to think our golden years would be stressfree with more time to spend with family and friends, to perhaps travel or to enjoy activities and hobbies, and of course to reflect on a well-lived life.

Hopefully that’s the case, but the reality is that as we get older, there are often unexpected challenges; and for many, questions and concerns come while helping and caring for aging parents and loved ones.

Recognizing the myriad issues related to aging – dementia, heart disease, mobility, Medicare, Social Security, wills and estate planning – KET is launching an initiative called The Next Chapter to explore these and more.

Through this effort, we will be producing several programs dedicated to aging-related topics, beginning with this month’s forum on caregiving. In the coming months, additional subjects will be explored in forums and in episodes of Kentucky Health and Kentucky Edition

This four-part series tells the story of one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history. When money started to seemingly disappear from its local branches, the government-owned Post Office wrongly blamed its own managers. For more than a decade, hundreds were accused of theft and fraud, and many were even sent to prison – leaving lives, marriages and reputations in ruins. But the issue was, in fact, caused by errors in the Post Office’s own computer system –something it denied for years. In the third episode, Hill makes a stop in Hindman, Kentucky, to visit with the founder of a program that assists opioid addicts by teaching them to make stringed instruments.

Art Happens Here with John Lithgow

In this one-hour special, actor John Lithgow shares his passion for arts education by diving into four arts disciplines: dance, ceramics, silk-screen printing and vocal jazz ensemble. He tries his hand at singing, dancing, printmaking and pottery, working alongside and learning from young people whose lives are being transformed by their work in the arts.

February Fanfare celebrates Hollywood’s golden age of filmmaking

Hosted by KET’s Greater Louisville Regional Fund Board, the 25th anniversary Louisville fundraising gala February Fanfare took guests back to the glamour of the golden age of Hollywood. Celebrating KET’s impact in Louisville and the philanthropic work of Honorary Chairs Paul and Pamela Thompson (left), over 300 attendees enjoyed dinner and a record-breaking silent auction and danced the night away to the tunes of The Crashers.

‘Kentucky Tonight’ talks with primary election candidates

‘Becoming bell hooks’ screenings in Lexington and Louisville

KET recently hosted screenings in Louisville and Lexington of Becoming bell hooks, a new KET production that tells the story of Gloria Jean Watkins of Hopkinsville, who wrote under the pen name bell hooks and later returned to Kentucky to establish The bell hooks center at Berea College. Several of hooks’ family members, including her sister Gwenda Motley (left), were in attendance.

‘News Quiz’ teaches students about solar eclipse

News Quiz, KET’s weekly current events program designed for students, produced a special episode all about solar eclipses to help children prepare for the total solar eclipse happening April 8. ‘KET Forum’ discusses caring for the aging

More and more Kentuckians will face the challenges of caregiving as the state’s population grows older. As part of KET’s initiative that focuses on aging issues, Dr. Wayne Tuckson and a panel of experts will discuss the rewarding and challenging experience of caring for the aging. They will discuss options for providing in-home and out-of-home care, the skill levels required to render care at home, respite services and supports for caregivers, and other issues related to caregiving.
