Building, growth and development in and around Kernersville remains steady as the economy continues to make gains. This special publication highlights most of that progress. Over the course of the last
year, Kernersville has seen its industrial, commercial and retail development remain steady, while residential development has begun to increase, said Community Development Director Jeff Hatling as he talked recently about growth trends the town’s planning department

planning department just recently issued permits for Friarwood, an 80-unit apartment complex at the end of Chaucer Manor Lane. “The biggest impact of this development is that we’re more on track with our pre-recession pace,” said Hatling. Hatling said that industrial, commercial and retail development in Kernersville was least affected by the economic downturn and has remained at a relatively steady pace for a number of years. “We’re constantly seeing new businesses on South Main Street, which is an area that remains a vibrant place for commercial investors to be attracted,” Hatling said. “We have a similar situation on N.C. 66 as far as commercial development.” Triad Business Park has seen its number of tenants increase over the last year.
Major anchor FedEx Ground completed an expansion, and the park added vaccine manufacturer FFF Enterprises and Columbiana Hi Tech, a company that makes storage containers for used nuclear fuel. “FFF Enterprises has completed construction and moved in,” said Hatling. “Columbiana is building a 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility.” Pope Companies is another Kernersville business that continues to see growth inside its business parks. “Pope Companies has two new buildings, each at 56,000 square feet, in South Park with several new tenants and upfits,” Hatling detailed. He continued. “We’re seeing all kinds of new businesses open up around town. Our commercial and office and industrial
growth and development has remained fairly consistent despite the recession. It’s residential that’s really charging along.” In other development news, Kernersville VA Health Care Center, which expects to open in the spring of 2016. Herbalife celebrated its grand opening last year, while property around the Caterpillar manufacturing facility off Union Cross Road is attracting development attention. Just a few miles from Kernersville’s town limits, Ralph Lauren Corp. is constructing a new 500,000 square foot facility along N.C. 66, just north of Hwy. 311, and medcial facilities such as Novant Health, Cone Health and Cornerstone Healthcare continue to add services to the citizens wbo call Kernersville home.
